RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Ok, guys, I just finished my Extra, about 15 years after my dad built two of them. Back then he wouldn't let me fly them, but I was gracious enough to let him fly mine today. It is still the amazing plane I remember, and it weighs 9.5 lbs with a YS 120 SF in front and fiberglass cowling. We flew the other ones in Bogota, a 8300 feet, and now I live in abu dhabi. It is amazing the unlimited vertical I got with a 15x7 3-blade. I hope you guys like...

Ive flown a DC gyro in bogota, colombia, at 8300 ft, no problem, except I used a .40 OS instead of the .25 recommended. It flyes great, but it takes a bit to get it spinning. Here's a video of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgPj6gkLp0o&feature=g-upl

RE: BVM Jets Photo and RC Plane Bomber
What makes me laugh is that you guys think that the FBI and every other intelligence and security department in Every country in the planet hasn't assesed the threat of r/c. It really doesn't matter what you think or what you say here, if model airplanes posed a real threat they would be banned or controlled like explosives or radioactive materials. Period. Saudi Arabia has done just that because some paranoid sheik or the king think like that morron with the Sabre. Thats why uav's are regulated and not r/c, not because of our prudence in this forum or BV's lobbying. Oh, and yes, BV is probably the second rudest person in the world, after my exboss.

RE: gorilla glue vs. epoxy
Yes, I haven't found a solvent to clean up either, I just remove as much as I can with a paper towel, then justwait for it to dry and peel it off my hands, easy but hardly ideal. As for the expanded glue out of the joint, it sands as easily as balsa when completely dry so no problem there

RE: gorilla glue vs. epoxy
ORIGINAL: Warbirdguy Not long ago, I posted on the forums that I tried GG and was shocked at how bad it turned out. Since then, I have actually followed the directions and followed others advise on how to use it correctly. I would not use anything else to glue on wing skins now. Ive used it in framing, firewalls, sheeting. Some places I would probably still use epoxy. But for the most part. I am converted to GG. You just have to learn to use it SPARINGLY lol. Thats my two cents and Im not that smart :P wbg
Yet you very rudely told us not to say anything to try to convince you otherwise when you irrationally tried it at reinforcing joints from the outside, not thinking of reading the instructions first. As I said then, it's the best to glue skins to foam cores as it expands and greatly increases the area, specially on the weaker and porous foam. Yep, I agree with your last statement[>:] You wrote: "The wing was already glued up with carpenters wood glue, Im not a beginer I just put some around the joints in the corners and on one section of sheeting I used it between the ribs and sheeting. Once again, I am not a beginer, just first and last time GG will be used for anything in my shop. My choice. does not mean you guys didnt have good luck with it. I just dont like it and not anything that can be said about it pertaining to RC will convince me otherwise. So save all yoru comments on how I did it wrong to yourself." Then, "Uh, I have skinned a fair share of wings in my life. Been building for 30 years. Never had an issue with it till I posted here The small area I did try the GG you could not get a card into. As far as "if it looks wet, to much glue, and if it looks dry, you need more???? WTH LOL. What if it looks...damp? LMAO Too complicated and I still see no benefits. I think the OP got his answer. Seems Gorrilla Glue sales reps or investers have hijacked this thread now. Im not using the stuff on any of my planes. You can write your long, foggy, unclear, responses till you pass away of old age. Not going to change my mind As far as Im concerned, anything wrote about GG and foam wings is just Blah Blah Blah Blah Epoxy is the way, unless you dont know how to use it properly. If you did, you would not be looking for another glue that would require no intellegence to use."

RE: Lipo Fires Are Real![Fantastic Advice!] Can I ask for further help?
Just to be clear, IATA and UN have two different classes of dangerous goods assigned to batteries: items such as cellphone, laptop, electric razors, etc, use excempted LI ION batteries, that due to the low risk associated can be carried on a passenger aircraft. They have to be declared if carried as cargo, but need no special procedures or packaging. On the other hand, LIPOs ARE regulated, can not be carried onboard passenger aircraft as cargo or personal baggage, and require special packaging and labelling to be able to fly even on freighter planes. Even with all the safety procedures in place, a DC 8 and a B747 both UPS have been totally destroyed by fire believed to have been caused by lithium fires. The last one crashed near a populated ared in Dubai a couple of years ago. A LIPO fire will burn hottest for some 20 seconds, at temps of 800 degrees celsius. Sand needs more than 1000 to melt and so does terracota, so the famous pot half filled with sand is the safest way, although no very comfortable to carry in the car, hehe. I always carry my batteries in the famous metal ammo box, but I put each individual in a ziplock bag just to make sure they won't short or touch each other, though how they could beats me, really.

RE: When LiPo's Attack!!!
Guys, lipos ARE dangerous goods, and at least 2 freighter planes (747 and DC 8) have been destroyed by lithium batteries they were carrying. Im a pilot and the treat is very real. So much that many passenger companies refuse to carry batteries as cargo (off course, people's electronics are accepted) You can't garantee that the soldering machine did the job perfectly 100% of the time, and thus, among thousands of perfectly safe batteries there is a faulty one about to go bad. I love them and use them, but always carry them in an ammo box and charge them far away from my car. Don't believe youtube, but people have lost their lives in these accidents and they are well documented. Also, making fun of the guy's mom, wether it's his fault or not is not cool

RE: Do I have enough Power for my plane??
The reason for the long, low pitch prop to be better on static is that it behaves as a car on 1st gear. The short one with the huge pitch (18x16 and so on) are like 5th. So, as we don't have variable pitch like most full scale planes, we have to compromise and get the equivalent of 2nd or 3rd gear. Something that will accelerate you enough for takeoff and go-around, but that will also give you enough speed for "cruise". I would find the prop that gives the best static thrust, then try one with 2 or 3 more inches of pitch, and as smaller as needed to maintain about 80% of the max recommended rpm's. Remember it will rev up as it speeds up. That's what I would use for the first flight, or taxi test, whatever you prefer. By the way, I've always hated Taxi trials, as the ground is normally what you hit, and it is so close then. I find much safer to just speed up, and if the plane wants to fly, just let it. Off course, not MAKE IT by pulling on the elevator any more than reasonably expected. Good luck

RE: Need some ideas on putting balsa on foam wings.
It will not strengthen any joints if it's not BETWEEN them. I'm affraid you did nothing to your frame. Trust me, make a dummy foam core and sandwich it with some balsa, thats where you'll see the result. Better yet, use gorilla on one side and epoxy on the other and test them! You wont be disappointed

RE: Need some ideas on putting balsa on foam wings.
WBG, I hope you bought the small bottle. After opened, the shelf life of the monkey (lol, good one) glue is about 1 month and it'll start hardening. You can still use it for a while but it will get thicker. You will find that it can be cut easily with any knife after dry and is just as easy to sand as balsa. One more thing, dont try to clean up with alcohol, it doesn't dissolve it. I love it, good luck with it

RE: Need some ideas on putting balsa on foam wings.
Girls, stop fighting, I am sure you are both real studs, with your toy airplanes and all. JAJAJAJAJA Now seriously, I've seen rc planes built out of beer cans, PVC pipes, steel wool, broomsticks, and covered with every kind of film and textile imaginable, including old fruit of the loom t-shirts. That means that at our scale we are so grossly over-structured that almost anything will do. That is with the obvious exception of stress points like wing joiners and firewalls and REALLY calculated high performance aircraft which I'm sure none of us make. That being said, I believe you both have had good results with your techniques, which do not seem unlikely to me at all. The hairspray is sure to weaken the adhesion of the resin and the balsa, but bear in mind that on the other side it's sticking to foam!! The only reason it doesn't separate is that it transfers the stress throughout the whole area of the wing. If little squares of glue do the trick, good for them!! The fact that no one in ALL Tenn. uses it does not mean it can't work. I also believe that injecting epoxy into the delaminated wing will stick it back together, but I happen to believe that Gorilla will penetrate deeper and make a stronger bond, even though it's a lot weaker than Epoxy. If no one has tried it in Tenn. well, too bad. Malcolm, sawari cap!! Gorilla is a glue that foams up when in contact with air moisture, which makes it grow and penetrate into porous materials. I don't know of any substitute for it, sorry. In your first post you said you didn't want to lift the skin and glue it again, so that's what I meant, by lifting the sheeting carefully you will be able to sand the inside, which is surely stiff with epoxy, and make a better bond. I think CA is out of the question, though, first because it will harden too fast for you to be able to apply it to more than one place, and because the joint with old epoxy will be too brittle.

RE: Need some ideas on putting balsa on foam wings.
I don't live in the States, but as my wings re very thin I just went for the regular light foam in the local stationery store. For a thicker wing I would consider using thicker foam, or better yet, use the same lightweight one and add a shear web (vertical grain) along the span. Also, if you're using a joiner tube, get the sleeve to be between balsa with the vertical grain that go straight to the skin. That way you transfer all the force to the balsa instead of the foam. For the servos i just used a sharp xacto knife to cut the boxes and was careful not to apply amy glue to the balsa where that box was. A little expanded Gorilla got in there but it was easily sanded off. I did use the hot wire to make a groove for the wires, leaving only a thin crack on the surface (where the wire enters and leaves). I did cover this with masking tape to keep the glue outside

Help with MAC for sailplane wing
Hi all, I bought this pretty plane from ebay a couple of years ago and it flew great the first time. Obviously, Chinese + Ebay means crap, so the stabilator was screwed to balsa and it worked loose in flight. I managed to land it and inserted some plywood to the base, but when I tried it again I set the stabilator insidence wrong and it flew straight to the ground. I had to make new wings, cockpit, etc. but it is finally comming out really nice. My question is, the instructions didn't mention CG or the neutral incidence for the stabilator. The first flight was a success due to pure luck as it was almost perfectly trimmed. Can somebody please help me find the MAC according to the plan I'm attaching so I can at least balance it properly? I'll set the CG at 30 % initially, based on the MAC I get. The dimensions are in millimeters. The TE is straight and at 90 deg to the fuse, and the double taper is on the LE only. I'm thinking about setting the incidence of the wing as the fuse shape produces, which is about 2 deg UP, and the stabilator at 0 deg for the first flight. What do you think? Thanks a lot, Mariano
