RE: Hippo Tipo help!
Well, that is basically the same info that I've got. The only thing missing are the templates. Pretty easy to make up though.

RE: Hippo Tipo help!
Believe it or not, that plane will come out weighing less than the 60 size Tipo (at least in my case) - Depending on where you live, the Hanno should handle it. You can always put a BX 1.08 in it with a johnson side to rear adapter - that's what the throttle is for. I'm putting a YS91 in mine. Look at the top of this post, Paul was kind enough to post some build instructions there. The only real critical thing that you'll need is the firewall template - I'm still working on mine, I've got a cardboard template now - and hopefully will get one that I can install soon.

Thanks Paul, I"d appreciate that - I can probably deal with proofing issues - I suppose the other key thing would be the location of the firewall from the nose ring. Do you have any docs on that? ..AJ

RE: Hippo Tipo help!
Well, of course, planning on a complete outfitting. I was thinking of a YS91 for the power w/pipe + spring air on the retracts. I'll mount sideways with the pipe running the the pipe tunnel (like (I've done my my other Tipo - see my pics in my gallery). I've had the 91 sitting around for a while without a good home - this seems like a good home to me. Right now the airframe weighs all of around 3 pounds. So, I think the the 91 and all up it should come in at around 8 pounds or so. My 61 powered Tipo w/pipe - tips the scale at 8 lb/14 oz.

Hello Pitstop - Thanks, I'll post some pics - not much to see there, but an ugly half baked job on the Hippo - The wing and stab are sheeted and glassed (the paint job stinks - but I can fix that). The info that I'm needing would come from the documentation for the plane. To add to the list, I'm also needing mounting technique, dimensions, and positions for the wing mounts. RE: composite arf yak?
BaldEagle - your picture looks pretty much like what I saw in the manual, with the hole in the control arm located above the gap - but I don't believe that it is the right location. Shouldn't the 'hole' in the control arm be exactly perpendicular to the hinge rod - which in the Yak is quite a bit back from the gap)? Yours looks way forward of that point (this was the point I was trying to make).

RE: composite arf yak?
The issue that I'm seeing right now is two-fold. a) from the pictures in the CA manual - the hinges are way too far forward, that is, the centerline on the hinge point do not line up with the rotation point (ie. the rod). The manual is misleading on this. b) The second issue is the height - the manual indicates the following: "Trial fit one horn in the milled slot, so that the hole for the clevise is between 22 - 24mm from the bottom surface of the elevator, and exactly perpendicular to the hinge axis (the centre of the aluminum hinge tube). Adjust slots as needed...." Now, I didn't originally build the plane, but I sure wish CA would supply the templates for this!

RE: composite arf yak?
OK, all of you CA Yak experts. I have this previously owned 2.6m Yak and I don't think that the aileron/elevator horn locations are quite correct. Does anyone out there have templates for this? Comp-Arf certainly doesn't (I've asked). Also, from looking at the manual, it doesn't look like the rudder horn is position correctly either, as the horn is located over the 'gap' vs the rotation line (which is behind the rudder/fuse gap by quite a bit. Any help certainly appreciated.

RE: Monokote - not like it used to be
Bax, thanks for the reply (I truly do). I understand the party line, but I have to say with great respect that the new formulation is decidedly not "as good as it has ever been". I have been covering all kinds of models since the 1970's (at great risk of revealing my age), and I can assure you that this is not the product is used to be. As a consumer, I'm looking for solutions that work. Monokote was a known quantity to me and I have always gotten sparkling results in the past and I felt extremely comfortable using it. As I stated earlier, I have models from the 80's and 90's that I still fly where the Monokote has held up extremely well (and is still workable!) After a brief hiatus from the sport, I had - in recent years - done more work in Fiberglass models. Within the past 5 years or so, I returned to film covering. Within those years, I have tried Ultracoat with good results, but chose Monokote for my current project because of the colors that I needed - there in lies the rub. The difference in the new formulation and the old formulation is night and day. So with over, argh!, several decades of experience using Monokote I can say unequivocally that the new stuff does not yield the same result. Bax, honestly I have closeups of models that I can send you that is indistinguishable from a painted finish! and the Monokote would bend AND STICK around impossible corners. I've tried using the 'new and improved' formulation and I'll say again that it simply does not perform as well. Now if there is a new 'trick' to using this stuff, I'm all ears.

I've tried all temps (that are practical). The 12 rolls (that I got this past summer) I got is hard to work with. I've tried practice pieces - just doesn't like to stick or shrink for that matter.

Monokote - not like it used to be
I'm currently covering a 33% Extra330L with monokote in a Red Bull Scheme. I absolutely must say that Monokote isn't near as good as it used to be - what's up with that? I've spent literally hundreds of dollars on this stuff on my current project and am getting very poor results. I started using monokote since I was 9 and I have confidently gotten spotless finishes using it in the past, however his is the first covered plane that I've done in quite a while. I don't think this is a 'batch' issue, as I've gotten 12 rolls of brand spanking new Monokote (from various LHS's), and it is all crap. Symptoms: 1. Very Poor adhesion 2. Poor shrinkage - I am using metallics (Blue and Aluminum), but I almost need to shrink this stuff near the melting point in order to get this stuff to shrink. 3. Doesn't smell the same when finishing - perhaps not enough glue on the 'improved' stuff?? Now as a contrast - I happened to have an almost full roll from - get this - 1975. And the 'old less improved' stuff still shrinks perfectly and finishes the way I think it should. What in the world did Topflite do to this once great product - and what can I do to get some of the 'original formula' Monokote? I tried writing TopFlite well over a week ago - with absolutely no response from them - so I thought to try this forum. Anybody else observed this?

Trying to use ST Models TX with AFPD
Has anyone out there been able to use AFPD with an ST Models TX? I just tried and the adapter cable doesn't see to see the TX (can't see it in Game Controllers, although the Ikarus interface is seen). I think the problem is in the pinout from the ST TX. ST says that they are Futaba compatible, but I don't think so).

RE: Ultrasport 1000 - debugging help.
Thanks Jim, I forgot to mention that I do have a pipe on it now, so maybe there's more work to do - Yikes! How, exactly, can you tell whether or not "I'm on the pipe". On the CG, I remeasured the CG and it is further back than I thought originally (now at 6" vs the 5 3/4 that I thought). So, now on to your other suggestion about clipping the wings. On Clipping the wings. The aileron strips stop at 4" from the end. If I cut the 4" off - the aileron will be at the end of the wing - is this what you did? Or did you also cut back the aileron strip and fill in the void to duplicate the original profile? So, it sounds like I can try 1. A perry carb for this thing (anybody know of one for cheap?) 2. Clipping the wing (which you suggested at the outset) 3. Dialing in some spoileron on a mixing switch. ..AJ

Ultrasport 1000 - debugging help.
Hello US1000 drivers, The purpose of this post is to get my US1000 debugged and to the optimum configuration quicker than the trial and error method that I using. Sure, I'll get there, but it may cost millions of dollars and cost me hundreds of props. Therefore, I'm looking for the 'solution set' for my woes. The Setup: US1000, ST2500 w/pipe, and APC 16x8 prop ST2500 is setup 0-0, no other incident changes to any of the flying surfaces have been made. Exactly per plan. Fuel: 15% Coolpower Plug: Fox idle bar Taildragger configuration. AUW: 13 lbs 0 oz. ASL: 6500' at the field, 8100' at my current location. 1. Balance point - the plans state that the ideal CG should be 5 1/4", but a +/- 1/2" variance is allowed - mine is at 5 3/4" - the very aft end of the recommended CG. 2. Lateral balance - dead on. The Observations: 1. Knife edge transitions fine - I put in the recommended coupling and it tracks knife edges. 2. Roll to inverted flight seems fine too. 3. Seems overproped - but the 16x8 is what ST recommends. Rev's OK for a big Tigre, but doesn't seem have the gitty up that I'm wanting. I'm still experimenting with engine setup (with an ST - you have to sneak up on the right settings) - still running a bit rich at this point. 4. Even though the balance point is at the aft most position, on takeoff the US1000 tail comes on plane very early ... and quickly, resulting in a nose down attitude on TO - really weird. This has lead to me trying different prop diameters with the benefit of actually changing out the props. I know this sounds like an incidence issue - but I've double checked that many times. 5. In contrast and contradiction to issue#4, my US1000 seems to float forever! Downwind deadsticks are no issue - this thing penetrates extremely well and I can still wind up landing at the end of the runway on a downwind approach with no power. Maybe its the way I'm going about landing this thing (which I have not ruled out), but this behavior indicates a slightly nose heavy preference - again in contrast to #1 and #2 above. The Questions: 1. What prop/fuel combo are you guys using out there for this setup? 2. What CG are you using for this configuration? 3. What explanations are there for what I'm seeing in the flight behavior? I'm a little puzzled right now. Thanks Folks! I know one of you US1000 gurus has the answer.

RE: Ultrasport 1000 - debugging help.
Thanks for the posts guys. I was initially dejected by the comments to dump the motor - switching motors is something to consider, but I just got this thing together. That OS1.6 costs a fortune and the Moki isn't much better. Now, I've seen posts where people swear by (not at) the big Tigres, but they readily admit that the big ST's really don't come from the factory 'ready to go'. In fact, things like the spray bar being totally in the wrong position were common carb issues. Therefore, you have to make minute carb adjustments to get it just right - and after that, people reported that it would hold tune and perform very well. Decidedly not an instant gratification, cox-motor, 2 clicks to tune sort of thing. Since my original post, I've checked on Jimmy's suggestion on the wheels and he was right - there was very unexpected wheel drag, (it sure didn't start out that way), so I fixed that. Right now, I don't have engine out issues - in fact this motor hand starts on first flip (after warm), and idles/transitions well - I just don't believe that I've got enough top-end, and right now I don't know how to get it there. I started with a very rich setting on the carb and have been sneaking up (read leaning out) on a setting that will be adequate. I don't have any experience with the big Tigres and I know that it won't wind up to 13,000 like a 40 or 60 size motor. So, in part, I really don' t know if I really have everything this motor has to offer. I tached it at FT, using an APC 16x8, at 8900 RPM - and that was at 8100' AGL! I thought that was pretty good - but again, I'm not getting near enough motor for those verticals or even large loops. The motor doesn't sound any different (like it is richening or leaning out, etc). I'm sure that the OS and Moki's will pull this thing around too, but my gosh - for a motor that is supposed to put out 3.7HP, I would have thought that a measly 13 lb airplane would have been a piece of cake. So, based on the suggestions that I got so far that don't involve dumping the motor - here's what I got: 1. I'll change fuel to Omega 10% vs the CoolPower 15% 2. Stick with the 16x8 prop. 3. On the gliding forever part - I'll have to learn how to deal with this, The only other plane that I have that acts this way is my LA-1 pattern plane - but even it will slow down. I was simply amazed how much energy the US1000 maintained. I would cut power to low throttle when it passed me and fly it 200' out - make my turn - set up, land and would still roll out to almost the full length of our 700' runway! The first few times I tried to line up on a landing, I did my usual landing pattern - and It was going pretty fast about 10' off the deck when it passed me, and it just wasn't slowing down - swooshhhh! So, what about my remaining question concerning CG location?

RE: *** CLUB SUPER TIGRE ***
Hello Folks, still having ST2500 issues - this thing has a ton of potential, so I'm going through and trying to figure it all out. 1. Doesn't seem to develop full power, terrible vertical on a 13lb Ultrasport. I'm using an APC 16x8 prop and 15% coolpower - although I'll get 10% Omega (which everyone seems to think these Tigers like). 2. Midrange sucks - I read some threads about rotating the spray bar more towards the front to remedy. 3. I can't kill the motor when the carb is fully closed. Obviously it is sucking air and fuel from somewhere, any ideas? ..AJ
