RE: L-19 Bird Dog?
I have built and flown both the 1/4 and 1/5 scale L-19's from Vailly aviation and can highly recomend them. PCK has a full kit for either and the build is very easy, especially if you purchase the photo pack that shows some of the difficult parts of construction.

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
Time for an update, Have approx 100 batteries through the XS (modified) and she's holding up fairly well. I am on my second set of drive cups (yanked from XS #1) and finally broke one yesterday. In a rush to replace it I scoured the HPI parts at work and found A549 axle that could work with some finessing. In order to use the A549 axles you need to drill the drive hexes out with a .196" drill bit or #9 and use the stock drive pin. While it was apart I changed the bearings to Traxxas #5116 sealed bearings. coop
ORIGINAL: Wheelnut Can the guys that have already opened the diff cases tell me if they are they filled with grease or heavy oil or dry?
The diff case has the same thick grease used in the housing to lube the ring and pinion. I put 50,000w diff fluid in the rear diff case when I had mine apart and it now accelerates in a straight line and has better traction in the dirt. I am tempted to put some in the front diff to help with the steering, maybe 25,000w would do it. cooper

You need to update the card to allow it to work with the XS speed control. You will need the Castle Link program on your computer and when you first plug in the card, the program will tell you there is an update for it, install it and it will work perfectly after that, cooper

Thanks used photobucket and updated my previous post. Sure wish I had a 24 tooth to try out but the 26 will do for now, all I need is a clear day to try her out but we are expecting rain through tuesday I did make a template of the plate and will probably make a new one with a slot so I can experiment with different pinions coop

Boredom struck today and pulled the tranny out to try and install a 26 tooth pinion. All went well after I found where to modify the stock plate, top right hole opened up here it is installed, just a little work with a dremel was all I needed and enough space was left to allow proper mesh coop

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
Ok just got back from running two packs through my newest XS at the field and came home broken! or so I thought. It started running different and noticed I had no rear power so I thought I blew the rear end, after examination I noticed the pinion drive cup was sticking out quite a bit so I pulled the rear out and found no shims under the pinion gear allowing the drive cup shaft to back out enough where the drive pin disengaged! Now I know why there were shims in the parts bag! After shimming the pinion and slapping it back together the truck is actually quieter now, may just pull the front diff and check that one too! As a warning to those of you who purchased one recently, check your spare parts bag and look for several small shims, they belong on that shaft! This truck is very easy to work on, 15 minutes to pull the rear and replace! coop almost forgot, motor temps 170~180, esc 95~110, all on 20c and 25c 2s packs

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
Got XS #2 today and ran a few 2s 25c packs through it. ESC is just hot enough not to be able to keep your finger on it more than a few seconds but motor is way too hot to touch (same with XS #1). Battery is dead in temp gauge but I'll post actual temps tomorrow when I run her. I am going to keep running #2 until it dies and use the first for spares. From what I can tell the esc definitely works better on 2s and the truck is fast enough for me. I did adjust the punch control on the esc with the castle link and those nasty back flips are tamed down but now the motor seems to cog more when first starting so I plan to do some more experimenting with settings and hope the option spur gear shows up soon so I can run a smaller pinion. After a lousy start with the XS's I am starting to like it more and more. Tomorrow its out to the dirt field and some serious abuse! might as well finish trashing the stock body! OOPS almost forgot, checked with HPI and the only reason they recommend 25c or better is so the battery can handle the amp draw, my 3s 20c pack never got hot (just warm). coop

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
HPI support finally sent me a new esc and motor as well as a new body to fix my current XS (have #2 coming on Thursday). Parts look like take offs from built vehicles so they are probably from the same batch. Someone mentioned the battery could be at fault since it was a 20c pack but these have been working in my Flux HP for the last few month's without a problem, don't see how a difference of 5 could really make that much of a difference in performance. Looks like I will be going to a 2s pack for the new one and I'll have to wait till HPI releases their option tranny gear(105809 page 26 of manual) to allow a 26 tooth pinion to be used then I'll go back to the 3s coop

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
four packs through and it flamed up! was running 3s Venom 5000 20c pack and motor and esc were getting very hot. Talked with the guys at the lhs and they suggested gearing down but did not have a smaller pinion at the time. My guess is HPI geared it to run 65mph so it could claim the top speed and would try to correct issues as they surfaced. Unfortunately we suffer as guinea pigs while they get their act together, which I am sure they will. Anyone know of a reliable esc I can use while I wait for a replacement? Will the Sidewinder Sv2 be good enough? coop

Sure would like to see BVM produce the Gill Panther, I have a soft spot for Panthers ever since seeing Ziroli fly his original many years ago. I think the Panther is probably one of the nicest flying early jets and you don't need gobs of power or speed to make them fly scale. Ok BV, the challenge has been trown down, when are we going to see the Gill Panther produced? cooper998

RE: balsa usa EINDECKER , info
I've built and flown the 40 size Eindecker from BalsaUSA and it definitely flies very scale like with the proper power. Mine was electric and all the radio gear was all up front in order to balance the plane. My only suggestion is to strengthen the stab. BUSA uses flat sheet stabs and in a hard loop it will break (happened to me), but flown in a scale manner there are no problems. cooper998

RE: ROSS POWER, .60 twin?
Nice little motor, its one of the last models made as noted by the screw in crank stud and vertical carb. Though not a valuable as the inline twins or flat fours Ross made, its still a collectible motor. I suggest looking at modern motors to replace it, probably cheaper than sourcing a second Ross. cooper998
