RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
I posted pix of my 4 star 120 Sunday flyer on page 3. Have read all the posts. So, this...I would love to have a hobby store today like I frequented back in 1960. As I delivered newspapers after school, I mindlessly dreamed of the rows and shelves of kit boxes. RC days came for me in 1970, I was buyin' and buildin' as fast as my poor college budget could handle. I was good for at least 6 crashes and new planes a year. Thats when I got introduced to a sweet stick. Well that pattern of crashing 6 a year went on for years....Until I got my first real flight system. Suddenly I wasn't crashing anymore. Just filling the attic and garage with planes. Dozens. One day I sat down and figured that at my current crash rate ( in about 1996) I had enough for a lifetime. I quit buying kits. Saved a few bridi, Sig, and four Aeromasters for later. I am 63 now, and still have too many planes. 1 dirty birdy 60, 5 sig planes, sundancer, sometin' extra, 4 star 1.20, 60 kadet, and the Aeromasters. Those are my comfort food planes, that make me feel so good. But what I fly most are the Quick Build ARF's, from Japan and China ....and my upgraded Real Flight on the computer. I'd rather fly than build anymore. Sig is/was the best....but those days are gone. I don't think sig can catch up via the new generation of pilots I don't see flocking to the hobby stores to buy a kit.

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
I love Sig. First plane I ever landed over 100 times was a Kavalier. Since then sevveral Somethin' extra kits, Still have one, Hog Bipe, Hog, 3 Four Stars. AND I still have a Sundancer 50cc in a box. The only sig I have crashed was a Hog. Since then I build 'em, enjoy 'em fly 'em overpowered, and then I sell 'em. I am going to try to attach some pictures of my best Sunday flier...a Sig 1.20 arf, Saito 1.80, wings clipped 1 bay. Don't quit! Get the computer simulator, and then a NICE trainer and a helper from a club. I used to fly with a guy who was 83 at the time (three years ago) and there were only two things he liked to talk about. One of 'em was airplanes.

RE: AMA Dues Increase[b/]
When I started to snow ski, an all-day lift ticket was 8 bucks. The best ski bindings were about $30. Accidents, attorneys, litigation and insurance now make an all day lift ticket over $120., and ski bindings ( which get a lot of blame) are over $500. My point is that there is a dynamic evolution in most everything we choose as a hobby. The AMA is the best friend we have in these times. I love this sport/hobby. AMA is fairly priced, and the rate increase will be well accounted for. AMA 51111

RE: Craziest thing you have done in this hobby
Nearly kilt the governor of Colorado. Flying a joss stick with a saito 1.50...seems I stepped on the end of my antenna wire as I throttled up on take-off. Flying at the Cherry Creek Reservoir DRC Eagles field. Started to do a procedure turn, and realized I had no radio. Chopped the throttle. Plane flew straight out towards the reservoir in a shallow dive. The plane flew over the heads of about 120 Boy Scouts at the water's edge who were doing an Earth Day project, with, then Governor, Bill Owens. The airplane flew about 15 feet above their heads, and finally crashed into the bushes and mud about 100 feet beyond the group. My son and I raced down there ( about a half mile) hoping no one was injured. There was the Governor and his video crew. My son grabbed the airplane, and I dug the engine out of the mud. No body hurt. We stood together with the Governor and smiled for some video, then tried to slip away fast before they all figured out that it was not part of the day's activities. Park Ranger grabbed us. We showed our AMA cards and said we were sorry for the poor performance of our airplane. Then I laid low, not flying at that field for a couple of months.

RE: All the hot women in this hobby ...
Honey, please bend over here and help me tweak this carb.... I remember a guy stomping another guy's aeromaster to pieces on a flight line in about 1973, because the aeromaster owner had taken the other guys wife ( who came to the field a lot) on a ski weekend. If it is colorful, goes up in the air, costs lotsa money, burns fuel, makes noise, includes the potential for danger and does not interest my wife I am all over it. That's one reason I love RC.

RE: heat index
well, it's hot. no global warming, but it's hot. Air is bumpy, winds are shifty, and my engines are cryin'. It's a good time to "self" thin the fleet at the field. If you've got your eyes on some new planes and such, this could be exactly what you have been looking for! Crash a couple and get your wife on board about your losses and needs. I have seen big softness on prices on the "Buy and Sell" forums, it's time to stick a few planes in the ground , get the model aircraft industry busy, and keep Japan and China from shuttin'er down. This heat presents a great opportunity for somethin' to dream about and spend money on! No, I don't have a hobby shop, just a fried brain dealing with my love for model aviation, and my frustration with thinking this is fun in triple digit heat.

RE: suggestions for a biplane kit
Giant Aeromaster if you can find a kit or ARF on RCU, E-Bay, or some other auction /sales site. They are out of production. Fly like trainers. Will do the works if you put enough power to them. Why they stopped producing this kit is beyong me Another great choice and out of production is the big Sig Sundancer. Smooth flyer, pretty in the air. Again, look on auctions etc.

RE: Kadet Senior
I have a SIG kadet Senior Red which I am shortly going to recover in Neon Pink and white underneath, so it is easier to see for trainees. I set it up as a tail dragger because I have trained about two dozen people on it. I don't like the mess of nose gears, or students wanging them up on landings. Eight of the students were under 14 years old so it works for kids. The elevator configuration makes the tail dragger assembly require a little thought about how it is installed. Power is an O.S. .61. Prop APC 12x6.

RE: Annoying people at the field.
The only guy I try to impress at the field is the safety officer. I want him to know who I am, and I want to be on his good side. I have good planes, and good electornics. Never talk price or lie about how I fly. I like to show up at a field, prep out and be in the air in 15 minutes, fly a good first flight and land. Then I will chat around a bit, look over who and what is there. Make a note of who I don't want to be in the air with. I never fly someone else's mistakes, and give very little advice. I am a happy flier. I never want my club to become my church too....and I prefer to stay away from boasters. On my second flight for the day I usually do some things that let "posers" and braggers know that I am a good pilot with a little zip. And I don't swear, blame others for my mistakes, crashes, or the fact that I just have a lot of fun in my own flight world.

RE: cheap equipment
First and foremost, I like to keep a local hobby store in business....just incase I need a screw and can't wait five days for mail. Second, I like to be able to talk to someone who knows something about what I am buying. I have had experiences where even the people I called at Horizon or Tower, didn't have a clue about a question. I would hate to have to call china for help. Last, I look a lot at build threads and pictures on the internet to see what others use and how they answer their problems.

RE: Wow, some of you are very bitter toward the AMA
well, lessee. When I was a kid in the 50's just reading about the AMA made my interest in the sport/hobby legitimate. For years I was out of the hobby with other family interests. Then we started an annual trip to the Indy 500. Decided to drop by AMA and see the place in Muncie. Joined back up, picked my number, AMA51111. Felt good...liked what I saw. Yeah, I wish AMA was located in Denver, so I could fly off their lawn, but that's about my only gripe. Seems they survived the wallstreet bailout over the subprime stuff, and none of the folks back there went to jail with Madoff. Also seems they have done a bit of talking to Washington since the 9/11 event , and we can still fly some pretty big and fast planes & jets capable of delivering a frozen turkey over a bridge or building. I like the AMA. I sleep better knowing my little old sixty bucks has someone else keeping my favorite hobby/sport alive and well.

RE: Lost interest in a build
When I am building I usually build three or four planes at a time and do similar assemblies on each one at the same time. Keeps me from being bored with one plane, and if i catch fire and have a vision on a particular one I move it up and work it faster than the others, but I keep the others moving. Some steps like installing linkages are tedious for me and so I will set aside a particular day and do nothing but cut pushrods, solder, and do basic servo adjustments. I build my planes to about 95% complete and then hang 'em up so that if I crash something or sell it or just retire a plane, I am never more than an overnight away from having something else in the air. I have also found that the best thing to help me want to build is to fly, and fly and fly. A good weather day where I am forced to build or repair, is a bummer. I choose bad weather and cold days here in Denver for building.

RE: Best RC airplane ever owned.
I have enjoyed many planes over the years but I would like to mention three that really turned corners for me in my ability and how I really got hooked into the sport/hobby. My Sig Kavalier was the first plane I landed over 100 times. That was such a learning benchmark for me that I retired it at 114 and signed the wing. Second was my Dirty Birdy 40. And third was my first bi-plane, a Lou Andrews Aeromaster. Since then I have flown bigger, faster, lighter and fancier, but those three were most remembered. If I were recommending a plane for anyone today as THE ONE to really get into fixed wing RC fun I would say Ultra Stick .60.

RE: What do you like more, building or flying?
Hinging. Hate Hinging. Whenever I stick build I look forward to hinging like a trip to the dentist. I have been building for 50 years. Flying time is precious. A good day wasted on construction hurts. I turned 60 this year and have dozens of airplanes swingin' in my hangar. I just hope I live long enough to get them all enjoyed. My crash rate over the past five years has been 1 a year, and my acquisition rate over the same time frame has been about three per year. Therefore I either need to keep flying till I am 92, or I will be selling some very nice planes on RCU in the future. Flyday is always the best day!
