RE: Goldberg Tiger Club
I would like to join. Just got back home and have mine going on the bench now. I doubt i will get to fly it this summer, but gives me something to tinker with. I'll probably have to put my skis or floats on it by the time i'm ready for takeoff. I still have to epoxy on the tail, hinge everything and figure out a cowl for it. I was planning to carve/sand one, but i may just mold something and glass one. Pretty close to complete after that. Just linkages and covering. Oh yeah, .40 size kit, O.S. 40FX with bisson pitts. I'm looking at transparent green monkeykote for the color right now.

RE: What green is this?
the transparent is definitely cooler looking for seeing the framing underneath it. Seamus, every time i see your kadet, i want to build one. thanks. maybe someday. really nice though. it just screams nostalgia at me for some reason.

RE: What green is this?
i'm pretty sure precision aerobatics uses ultrakote for their covering and it does look like the apple green. it's not transparent, it's the sun light shining through the covering and the shadows of the structure you're seeing through it. most other lighter colors will do the same thing, as they're not very opaque. i would be careful with the neon colors. i haven't tried ultrakote a lot, but the monokote neons have a bad tendancy to bleed away from the film leaving poor results. just my experience. i do like the colors though. just never good luck with them.

RE: GP .60 Extra 300s Build
so i read in the beginning of the thread about the sanding and painting of the landing gear, but does anyone know where i can get a set of carbon fiber or some sort of composite gear for this machine? the aluminium gear that came with it looks like someone took a scrap chunk of strip metal and shaped it around something. not that i can't do anything with it, but sanding, dressing and painting are a must if i'm to use it. after flying it a couple of times to get the feel of her, i would like the look of the composite gear better than something painted up. not a must, but a want... maybe another kit or BARF that has the same size stance.

RE: going snow skiing
So my snow turned into the ice storm of the century. Just getting power back on after a wek of black out. Needless to say, i didn't get to get out and play. We had downed trees all over the place, plenty of snow, but no way of charging things up enough to go flying. Now things are thawed and the snow and ice age gone and back to wet grass. Guess i'll have to try the wet grass with the skis.

RE: How to stop worrying about hinge failure
How to stop worrying about hinge failure? realize you bought something that was probably made by some chinese kid. did you install the hinges? what type are they? how did you install them? hinges on an ARF, if you installed them and did them correctly, should be the least of your worries. be sure to check all the glue joints in the fuselage that you can get to and add more glue if you see any gaps. make sure the firewall is securely EPOXIED to the fuselage, not just glued, seal the in and out of the firewall if using gas or nitro, and shake it a little after assembling it to get all the grimlins out. you can seal the hinge lines if you like, but contrary to popular belief, a slight gap isn't going to be detrimental to flight. i seal most of the gaps on my planes just to keep the edges of the covering from coming loose in flight after a while, but not for holding the feathers to the surface. i flex the feather down, put a strip of 'magic' scotch tape along the hinge line then flex the feather up and do the same to the bottom side. monkeykote would work too, but then you have to bust out the iron and trim the access away. the tape disappears after you put it on. there are techniques for 'pinning' hinges that will most certainly elliminate them from ever seperating. not a difficult task. what's your experience level with building planes? i'm guessing pretty new with BARF's?

RE: plans from RCM still aviable?
i've ordered from them a few times over the past few months, and it usually takes about 3 weeks to get them, but yes, they are still available. if they don't have what you are looking for, check airagestore.com as well. they are plans from model airplane news magazine. be careful using plans that are not CAD drawn. i got a set and had to lay templates over other parts of the plan to re-measure and re-draw them a little so they actually line up. a set of T-Craft plans almost had to be completely re-done because the templates for the ribs didn't go with the wing, formers and firewall were too big for the front of the fuselage, wing halves were different lengths... lots of problems. i was pretty upset, but after a few hours and some heartache, i think i got everything ready to cut out templates. thankfully, 90% of the fuse and all the tail surfaces are stick built.

Amish, the ISBN number is 0-911295-13-5. both amazon and flee-bay have them right now available. amazon, just type that into the search under books. not sure about flee-bay. i came across it there looking under model airplane news. quite a few pages to look through there. have some other books available too. thanks for the landing gear link too. i'll be checking them out.

going snow skiing
please post any pics, videos, or all out fun stuff you guys have been through with skis on your planes. i know it's a little late in the season for some of you lucky(???) folks that got snow earlier in the year, but we JUST now started getting ours, and i'm off the next 3 days. i took the deminsions from the dubro skis and laminated some ply and basswood and scratch made myself a pair of skis. i'll post photos this evening. thing is i had a question about how MUCH snow is really needed for using them. we only have about 1/2 to 3/4 inch on the roads and parking lots, but the grass is a couple inches thick and ALMOST, but not quite, covered. i've never used skis on my plane, so is this still not enough? it's pretty powdery too. not really packed down or frozen good. the news goons are saying we may get upwards of 6-12 more inches over the next couple of days.

RE: what's up with spinners?
the ones you said you've seen frag out... are they the dubro or great planes type? those nylon kind of ones? i'd be surprised. i've never heard of it. those are the ones i'm looking for in a 4". i checked out the mecoa website and hobby people, but those are stil too expensive for what i'm using it for. the cheapest i saw was a replacement cone, just the cone piece-not the back plate, and it was still 15 bucks. not terrible. i may get one of those and epoxy it to a round piece of light ply with a hole in the backside or shoot longer screws through the original holes in the spinner, for mounting it to the motor. i would put tape on the aluminium one, but i do get carried away sometimes. i hate sanding and have a little more than little patience for it if i get really hard wood. (that's what she said) the blocks that came with the kit do seem to be pretty dense, so... i think i can part with the 15 bucks for another 'tool'.

RE: what's up with spinners?
thanks guys i'll check out these places mentioned. i'm not concerned with running the plastic one on the motor, i just want something i can put on the motor and use as a guide for sanding/shaping the balsa blocks used for the top of the 'would be' cowl. i plan on using the aluminium spinner for flying. even though it may look odd, i'm probably not going to paint it red, as it should be, according to the plane i'm modelling it after. i may use a plastic one if i can find one that's actually pretty close to the color, but it's only going on an o.s. .75ax. nothing too big that i think torque is going to be a factor with slipping on the thrust bearing.

what's up with spinners?
i'm curious if any of y'all know where i can get a cheap plastic spinner larger and 3.5 inches. i'm looking for a 4 inch. i want it to help shape the nose of my P-51, and then whatever other planes instead of using my perty brand new shiny aluminium one. i know i could put tape over the spinner and MAYBE not scratch through the tape, but how come nobody makes them in bigger sizes in plastic? then another thing that irritates me. why would i enjoy spending 40-50 some-odd bucks OR MORE on a perty shiny aluminium spinner for a scale plane that i'm going to turn around and paint for it to match what it's supposed to? then there's the option of laminating some 1x6's and sacrificing a finger on a lathe trying to get one turned. is that what it's coming down to?

RE: WarbirdColors Paint
hey M&M, i live just down the road from you in orting. i just sprayed a cub in the garage with an HVLP gun and glidden 2K exterior latex paint a couple weeks ago (50 something degrees), and had no problems at all with any of the temp/hummidity questions you asked. i think the temp for painting is actually better a little lower so you don't have a problem with the paint drying before it actually contacts the surface. thus, of course, you want the paint to be wet on all parts of the application. the 'wet' step of your application refers to a little thicker spray/coat of your paint. the first couple of coats are going to be thin just to get some color down in an even application. the wet coat will be a little thicker because it's going to flow out on it's own as it dries and cures, getting rid of the brush marks or spray spittle. but the temp and humidity is actually better here for painting than say in a dryer/warmer climate. take into account i used latex paint and the WBC paint is different, but you will have to play with each type/brand/color of paint every time something in the mix changes, until you figure it out. just go easy...i know that stuff is expensive. let me know how it works for you and how you like them, too. i'm looking at their paint and nelson hobby paints for my P-51. WBC is having issues with manufacturers right now.

RE: spray paint
go somewhere that sells appliance spray paint and pick up some white. it's epoxy paint and will look nice AND protect the inside from any fuel spill/leak mishaps. only thing with it is, it's high gloss from the reason of painting appliances. not sure if you want a glossy interior. but, the stuff is almost bulletproof. after it cures for a week or two, you can take some steel wool, 000 or 00, and scrub the shine down a little, if you like that. the paint comes in white, black, off white, and a metallic/brushed kind of color. i guess like stainless steel.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
sonny, you're welcome. i stumbled across the site while researching for my P-51. imagine that... both my favorite warbirds holed up together. i'm currently not with a club right now. just out of a football field here in town at the high school on the weekends time and weather permitting. i used to fly out at the mount rainier rc society club a few years ago, but deployed a lot over the years, and dropped the membership. i'm working on my AMA application right now and will soon be going back out there. it's a nice place. there should be a club meeting sometime in a few days to drop an application off with those guys and pay the dues. that's something that's going to take some getting used to again. the football field is free. but, i've been buried in balsa more than not lately, retiring a plane and getting another ready. i've got 4 planes in various stages of completion right now, but am concentrating on another trainer with skis, hoping for a little snow this weekend or middle of the week. where are you tearing holes in the sky?

RE: paint/clear coat vs. glow fuel
well... the raw fuel did a number on the clear coat stuff. it didn't go all the way through to the paint, but attacked it after just a few seconds on it. it started with more of a discoloration, or fog look, i guess, but made the finish very tacky. that was with the 10% nitro just poured in a small size puddle straight on the finish. wiping off the fuel doesn't look it really did much, as well as rubbing the fuel around into it with a micro-fiber cloth. after sitting for a few hours after doing this, the finish just appears to be more dull than the surrounding area. ram-bro, when you use the lustrekote clear over the model masters, did it attack the paint and crackle or blister it? i'm assuming you put on a very thin coat for the beginning? i think my next test is going to be fuel on Poly-C, though i'm expecting about the same. i figured the laquer stuff would be about the same as lustrekote, since it's a laquer base also, but... then will be lustrekote over exterior latex paint. Glidden 2K, from home depot. since i'm using that for the cub, may as well find something to protect it.

RE: its building time
i'm forever finishing a sig Smith Mini-plane. most of that is stick built, but i did get a little irritated while building the fuselage sides up and got the part of mounting the cowl. it didn't fit at all around the bottom of the fuse and i had to cut and shave a lot of the wood away from the bottom corners of the fuselage to get it to fit. i was told they knew of the problem, but nothing has been changed in the plans to compensate for it, or a modification to the cowl. 'seriously...' i asked. 'i'm sorry sir' was the response. some kits just leave a little to be desired. i think it's a conspiracy to make people buy a different kit/same brand to see if things are any better than the other. i guess i've been pretty lucky with the GP kits. never any problem with things not fitting, just poor wood sometimes, and one issue i had with one plane building 2 left wings. not sure how that one happened. i'm getting ready to start a TF P-51 gold edition. we'll see how that one turns out. i have heard the SSE's are great flyers, though. and a lot of fun. enjoy it.

i'm curious about using the talc powder. how much would you put in the dope or poly-c? i've never used it before. isn't baby powder basically the same, or should i buy the talc? i know baby powder HAS talc in it, but not sure if the other stuff in it would react differently. i work crash recovery, and all of our airbags are covered in talc before folding, so kind of easy to come

RE: problems painting koverall
guys, realizing i'm not the best person for koverall and painting, i'm about finished with my cub, and this was my first time using koverall, minwax Poly-C for filling the weave, and glidden primer-in-paint 2K (whatever you want to call it from home depot) and used an HVLP gun to paint it, and it's turning out great. here is a link to the threads with my process and results. i hope it helps, the Poly-C and paint can either be sprayed or brushed on. i brushed the Poly-C with a 2" foam brush. 3 coats pretty thin and it was sealed. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10857617/tm.htm http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10771252/tm.htm i'll be following to see if anyone comes up with other better ideas, but this worked great for me. and like i said, this was first time going this way. i'm just sick of trying to get a nice finish with monkeykote or ultrakote. some people swear by solartex and other 'tex' fabrics, also, but i haven't tried them yet.
