RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
I have used TH for many years now. In fact, I just received the orde i submitted last Thursday Sept 6. No issues at all. I have however, had issues with wrong parts and broken parts, a phone call took care of everything and it did not cost me an additional cent. I am very satisfied with Tower Hobbies. Orlando

That looks good Vince. Should be pretty visible in the air. The combination of colors I find to be visible are dark blue, red, cub yellow and white. Nice job, can't wait to see it. Orlando

RE: Brush cleaners from resins
I have used the alcohol technique but does not work very well. So now I have been using a little lacquer thinner straight from the can, drop the brushes inside fro a few minutes then hand clean. Works great. Been re-using my brushes many times over. Works on laminating resin, epoxy, fiber glass polyester. Orlando

Repair stinger on carbon fiber muffler
The stinger on my carbon fiber muffler is hanging on by a small amount; it has side to side movement along with up and down movement. I have tried to repair it but without success. I have used epoxy with carbon fiber strips attached to the stinger. But the heat of the exhaust coming from the YS engine softens the epoxy. I have also tried laminating resin, same result. I have also tried JB weld with the same results. My latest attempt was to use Form-a-gasket, which stated it could sustain 600 degrees F, but the adhesive liquified. It was also suppose to be resistant to solvents. I had used this in the past on auto engine repairs and it did work. I am in need of some help along the lines of suggetions for a repair other than buying a new muffler. Thanks in advance. Orlando

RE: My Wood & Foam Bridi UFO Build
I have been using "Min-Wax" brushing lacquer to apply the silkspan. Goes on just like dope, smells like dope. First two coats applied full strength. Then sand between coats to top of tissue. Third coat thinned to 75%, then sand, last coat thinned to 50% and sand again. The surface is hard and smooth. You don't even need primer. But I take brushing lacquer, thin it a little and add talcum powder and brush it on. Fills in the most minute imperfections and sands great. It is then ready for paint. The result is a light weight finish. For paint I use Urethane enamel auto paint. Orlando

Looks good. Try a "T-Canalizer behind the canopy about 5" tall with horizontal surface. Will change the flying characteristics quite a bit especially in slow rolls and knife edge.

RE: Phoenix 6 - Start # 2
I have been looking at that Duplicolor (I saw them at Pep Boys automotive) and they seemed very interesting. I have an old pattern airplane (15 years old) with an epoxy paint finish that needs refinishing. And I was considering Duplicolor as the refinishing agent. What caught my interest, they have ready mixed colors in spray can, no hardner, no reducer etc required; sort of just point and shoot and you are done. No cleanup mess to play with. Orlando

RE: Tangerine Pattern Contest Dec 3. 3, 2011
Well, the Tangerine Pattern Contest is now in the history books. The weather was great, comfortable temperatures, the wind, well, it was challenging at times and kept things interesting. In summary, the Classic portion only 4 people showed up and we decided to have a practice day for AMA turn-around pattern. Attached are the results. I am going out of town until January 2, 2012 and will try to post pictures while I am away. If I cannot, I will post them when I get back. There were 21 pilots and only one mishap. Mike Plummer had a radio problem and his new Vanquish went in. It was recovered and apparently the problem was within his receiver. There was a good battle in Sportsman with Cody Powell edging out Zachery and George Gordon. Another battle was in Intermediate with Gary Freeman Jr edging out Neil Rivera. In Advanced, Mike Constantine held off the charge from Victor Diaz and Houston Schweitzer. In Masters, Humberto Pomales took top honors, Steve Homenda placed second, with Dave Stoddard edged out Gary Kirby in the last round. More to come later. Have a happy Holidays. Orlando

RE: Tangerine Pattern Contest Dec 3. 3, 2011
It's only 2 weeks away. Hope you guys have been practicing, because I haven't. I am repairing my Black Magic due to a mishap (hit a clump of grass on landing). Anyhow, here is an update to the contest. Friday December 2, 2011 will be flying Classic airplanes using the same schedule as last year. Look for one of my previous posts and it tells what schedules are being flown. Saturday and Sunday Dec 3,4, 2011 will fly AMA 401-404 and AMA 406 schedule P-13 only. Meal tickets will be given out at registration. And speaking about registration: If you fly only Classic Pattern on Friday, fee is $20.00. If you fly AMA, Saturday and Sunday, fee is $30.00. If you fly both Classic and AMA (that is all the events Friday, Sat and Sun), the fee is $40.00 Registration will start on Friday 8:00 A.M. with first flight at approximately 9:30, weather permitting. Saturday Registration starts at 8:00 A.M. In addition the field will be open before Friday. So if you see me there you can also register. I would like to know how many of you are planning on flying Classic. Please let me know via this forum. Hope to see many of you at the contest. I'm planning on flying Classic if I can get my Escape finished. Orlando

RE: Tangerine Pattern Contest Dec 3. 3, 2011
CORRECTIONS CORRECTIONS CORRECTION! I have been notified of a couple of discrepancies in my last post. 1) Classic Pattern will be flown December 2, 2011 AND NOT December 3rd as stated. Please note this correction. AMA pattern will be flown December 3, 4, 2011. 2) Also, FAI WILL NOT fly the F-13 schedule only the P-13 schedule, contrary to the previous posting. Please make these notations, and I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused. Orlando

RE: Tangerine Pattern Contest Dec 3. 3, 2011
OK guys, more information on Tangerine Pattern contest. As you know, Friday Dec 3 will fly the Classic pattern planes. SPA, BPA are legal which includes tuned pipes, retracts. We will fly the current schedule as per Classic Pattern Association which is the same as we flew last year. Attached is a copy of the schedules to be flown which are Novice, Sportsman, Advanced and Masters. We will fly one line as I do not expect too many pilots to fly Classic. We will start flying as early as possible depending on the weather and the sun. I am planning to fly four rounds, so it should be an easy and relaxing day. Contestant judging will be the norm. In addition, AMA turn-around pattern is to be flown on Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully we can get six rounds in and leave somewhat early on Sunday. The schedules are as they are listed on the NSRCA website ans are the current schedules being flown. The only exception is FAI which will fly the P-13 schedule. F-13 schedule will be flown due to the unfamiliarity among the pilots and may cause judging problems. Besides, the P-13 schedule is sufficiently challenging. Therefore, we will try to get as many rounds as possible for FAI. Lunch is furnished (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and refreshments), one meal ticket per pilot registration will be furnished upon registration. Start practicing as this is the first contest for the 2012 season. I am getting my Black Magic trimmed out with the help of Jason. Hopefully I can be ready for the contest. Is there a schedule that is easier than the Sportsman?????? If you have any questions, e-mail to ojfrets@att.net or you can contact Larry Odom or Chris Odom or Jason Shulman and also Victor Diaz. Attachment for CPA schedules as follows:

RE: Tangerine Pattern Contest Dec 3. 3, 2011
Hi Dave: The decision to make the event an AMA Pattern (turn around) only came about considering that CPA would be one day and AMA pattern would be two days. After the difficulties I had last year with running 3 days of CPA and AMA, I decided that this year would be only AMA pattern. However, if there are sufficient number of pilots desiring a one CPA event, I may reconsider and only go for one day CPA event. Bear in mind, however, that the Friday Dec 2, would be the CPA event with Dec 3, 4 being reserved for the AMA pattern. This then would make practice day on a Thursday. I hope to see at Tangerine. Thanks for your inquiry. Orlando

RE: SF/RF tuning advice
Daave: Perhaps your low speed needle may be a bit tight (closed). Try closing the low speed needle, open the carb barrel to a point where normal idle would be; connect a piece of fuel line tubing to the spray bar and open the high speed needle maybe 3 or 4 turns to the open position. Then start blowing thru the fuel line tube connected and begin opening the low speed needle until you just begin to feel air flow thru. Then start engine and adjust high speed. Once it runs the set low speed. Continue until you have smooth transition. Hope this helps. Orlando

RE: Phoenix 6 - Start # 2
Hi Mike: As you may or may not know the Phoenix is a bird that would live for 100 years, then disappear and come back again, or something to that affect, I'm not too sure. Maybe the historians in this group can shed some light on the "Phoenix". Sometime ago I was chatting with Don and asked him how he got the Phoenix series started. He came upon the name Phoenix based on the story above. Don Lowe started the Phoenix series design wanting a jet style looking aircraft with sweptback wings. He tailored the first series P's along the F-86 Saberjet. If you look carefully at the P-1 thru P-3 and even the P-5 there is a resemblence to the F-86. I am looking to build a P-5 in the near future (once I can wrestle one away from Don). Don is currently flying a Hanger 9 P-7 with an Evolution 60 and E-flite electric retracts. He originally fle it with fixed gear and it flew great. Then he went and installed the electric retracts, Don says the plane flies very well either way, but he enjoys the retracts more. BTW, Don also is flying a Piper Cub, Clip the wings further, has a fairly large gasser up front, and does point rolls, inverted flight stall turns ans etc. On one of his flights I stated that I gave him a ZERO for every manuever,-he asked why?. I said Cub's don't fly that way. Orlando Orlando

RE: Phoenix 6 - Start # 2
Mike: That should be a nice event. Don Lowe is a great person to know. He really goes out and helps one when they have problems. Even will discuss design issues if you ask him. Really a great person. Therefore RCACF is holding the event in his honor. Should be great. Come on down and join the fun. Orlando
