Thanks everyone, but..... Remember what I said Before?
It's always been bad luck to name my boats during the build phase, but MEH....What the heck;
Guess what?
ORIGINAL: 2manytoyz Looking fantastic! Where did you source the plastic and how thick is it? Inquiring minds... [:D]
Thank you. 1/8" thick, smooth one side, textured on the other.
ORIGINAL: Mr Cajun Gator By the way what are you using to hold every thing together?
I use Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). (It's a strong solvent available at Ace Hardware) I take small scraps from the build process and make a homemade glue by melting the plastic in the MEK. It essentially "welds" the plastic together. To shine the boat up after sanding, I take a cloth soaked in MEK and wipe the boat. It removes the sanding marks and leaves the surface with a shine. Spent yet another day in the garage. Weight with top deck is 10Lbs. I have to wait for the aluminum to come in before I go any further.

Thanks for the compliment Rowboat. I did all the cutting with a band saw. The transom and the stringers are two pieces laminated together...the transom was laminated after the notches were cut.

Thanks for the break in instructions Hal. I'm going to try to stay under 20 Lbs, but as I said, the plastic is lots heavier than wood...more expensive too, I picked up another sheet today to the tune of $52 for a 4x8 sheet. [X(] The first two pics are showing the notching at the transom.

RE: Velocity..the newest addition to the fleet.
No CAD program used, I just jotted ideas down on paper and then drew the individual pieces. I stack rough cut pieces together then make all the final cuts stacked up so the parts turn out the same. I cut using a band saw. I do plan to draw it all out in CAD and offer the prints....if it turns out to be a good design. It should end up being 36" long, 20 wide. (14 wide on the bottom) and 4" thick. I'll know more on the finish RTR weight as the build progresses....it's going to be a tank, the plastic is lots heavier than wood. I would love to come to a race some year. What is the recommended break in on the CY? I got no paperwork with it at all. I'm assuming natural oil (not synthetic) should be used.

All the control cables are tight and the engine has VERY little play side to side. I have the EXP set to about 30% and the steering speed at 25%....

RE: OS 25 powered Minikaze
Way too much weight up front. Tail heavy is better. Where is the c/b? If you lift the boat by the prop at the hub, is the stern heavy or the bow....I'm bettin' bow heavy. It also sounds like you might be running the engine too lean. My.25 does the same thing if I try to run it too lean.

Hmmmm....I see the dipping of the sponsons and I tried to pause the video to see the shape of the bottom of the sponsons but I couldn't see them that well. It looks as though (from the side) that the sponsons aren't flat. Do they taper from front to middle then flatten out at the stern or is it a full taper from front to rear? how wide are the sponsons? Either way, there is enough displacement to get on plane, just not enough to hold the extra weight of the boat during a turn. Does it do the same thing at higher speeds?

The wrong prop is what the LHS guy said too. I just got my new Octura 440 2 blade this afternoon. I need to balance and sharpen it then go somewhere to test. I don't think that the carb is the right one either. I was going to replace the needle with a new one because it kind of turns easy. The one at the LHS looks nothing like the one on the carb.

RE: issues with brand new 3.3 motor PLEASE HELP!!!
If you have good throttle response off the line, turn the idle stop up. If it stumbles upon takeoff, then the lsn needs adjustment. Copied and pasted from another website:
Tuning Tips 1. If you have other hop ups, like a high performance pipe or air filter, hold of on installing them until you get the idea and practice of tuning down, any change you make to the motor will change how the mixtures are set, so get tuning down first, hop ups will follow. The Traxxas tuning guides and settings are based on stock motors, any change you make can and will affect the engine mixture settings. 2. Always tune with ½ a tank of fuel. The mixture progressively leans out as it nears empty, and tuning with ½ tank can help with overheating problems when the tank is near empty. 3. Tune in small increments. No more than 1/8 a turn at a time on the HSN (High Speed Needle), 1/16 a turn on the LSN (Low Speed Needle). 4. Use a fresh glow plug, especially after break in. Use a Traxxas 3231 or 3232 Super Duty plug. In the event that these are not available to you, the McCoy MC59, Megatech ‘Q’, OS LC3 (DuraTrax LR3) are known to work well. And always clean your motor good before trying to replace your glow plug, all it takes is 1 grain of sand to shorten your engine life. 5. Use fresh fuel, I prefer using 20-30% Nitro and if you are new to tuning Traxxas Top Fuel is formulated especially for Traxxas motors, if Top Fuel is not available consult your Local Hobby shop (LHS) for what they recommend. 6. Always tune with a warmed up motor. Always do a WOT (Wide open throttle) pass in between any adjustment no matter what needle you are dealing with, it help regulate the motor. 7. You have 2 mixture settings, Low and High speed. They work together. So you must tune them both in order to get good results. Many who post here don’t. Probably 90% of all tuning issues I have seen is because they do not touch the LSN. 8. Tune in this order. HSN, then LSN, set the idle, then HSN again, reset the idle if needed. 9. Use a handheld temp gauge at first as a reference. From there you tune by smoke trails and performance. You must have a visible smoke trail at top speed, if not - the HSN is too lean. Temp gauges are basically a tool for getting you in the ball park without frying your motor. Smoke trails and performance is used as a reference for the fine tuning part. Pinch test for setting your LSN 1. With the motor warmed up do a WOT pass then pinch the fuel line 1-2 away from the fuel inlet of the carb and count how many seconds it runs till it stalls out completely. 2. Less than 3 seconds it’s too lean, richen the LSN by turning the needle counter clockwise, if it is more than 4 seconds it’s too rich, lean the LSN by turning the needle clockwise (remember no more than 1/16 a turn at a time.) 3. Engine RPM’s should rise slightly before the engine stalls. If there is no rise is RPM, the LSN is too lean, if the RPMs rise a lot, the LSN is too rich.
RE: Is my engin dead/dying?
I had the same trouble a couple of years ago with that same engine. After going through looking for air leaks, using a cold glow plug and shimming the head as a last resort...I gave up and got the OS .18TM when it was still available. I think you have already wrecked the engine by overheating like I did. It's part the fault of the engine and mostly a noob tuning mistake. A good quality engine like the OS will take the occasional overheat cycle.

RE: RE:
I can turn over the engine using the prop, so I don't think the shaft is slipping, but if the new prop I ordered doesn't fix it, I will check it out. The aluminum prop that was on it had what I would consider to be small dings-or-nicks in the leading edge...I'm thinkin' that's my problem.
nice job on the resto by the way
Thanks...you have no idea the troubles I had though. After I sanded and primed the whole boat, I used some old (but still good) polyurethane fuel proof paint the guy at my LHS gave to me...he said it was too old to be sold. Anyway...I painted the boat and it looked great except for a couple of small runs. We can't have runs, so I waited a few hours then wet sanded the runs out and wet sanded the entire boat again so I could respray. Bad idea. The new layer of paint lifted the old layer. Kind of wrinkled it. I read the can AFTER I did this and it said: May be recoated within 15 minutes or after 7 days. LOL The solvent must be so strong in that paint it will wrinkle itself if not completely dry. I was thinking of putting stripes on it, but I think "plain Jane" looks OK too.
