what material to build up fuse at firewall
Working on my neighbor's plane and wondered what to use on EPP foam where I have to add material to attach a firewall to. It's a Parkzone Super Cub and was thinking of using the spray urathane insulation but didn't know if it would attack the foam or not. What other material could I use? Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

repairing foam fuse??
Hey, not a beginner but am to foam. Have my nieghbors crashed plane to repair and have most done but wonder what I can use to fill in front of fuse under the firewall. It's a hobbyzone supercub with epp foam I believe. Was wondering if I can use that urathane spray foam insulation or will it eat up the foam on the plane? I need to fill in an area about 1/4 inch by 2 inch by 1/2 inch. Thanks for any help. Jim

RE: how to glue Polaris XL
got some ca for some of it and one polaris how to used gorilla glue for lots of it. The XL wing is in 4 pieces and has to be lined up for the four carbon fiber spars. There are two sections you can do by themselves but the others all have to be lined up good. Not sure which motor yet. Probably the smaller of the recomended for longer flight times. Thanks

how to glue Polaris XL
bought the kit and looked and looked and trying to figure out the best glue to use and which section of the wing to glue first. I guess 30 min. expoxy with microballoons since I have so many areas of the foam to glue and line up, tape, insert carbon fiber. etc. Anyone else out there built one and got any tips. Instructions I guess assume you know which glue and technique, etc. Thanks for any feedback. Jim

Duh... thanks Ernie I didn't even think about Bill's notes. I've looked through them before and know there's lots of great info there. Probably more than I'll ever need. And I had to even skip right over it to get to this thread! I'll go to it now and start reading while waiting on my bearings to arrive. Will check in later if I get stumped. Probably will, not quite an engineer but my brother is. I do like fiddling with things. Thanks again Ernie. Jim

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks w8ye, matter of fact I believe I took your advice on the bearings source. They are so cheap and if this goes as planned I'd think finding cheap old non-crash damaged engines might not be a bad thing. As long as not too old and parts still available. You can pick them up cheap at swap meets. I love getting an engine that is seized up. Lots don't know that the fuel is only gummed up. And don't worry, I plan to ask. Jim

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well I have ordered a set of bearings to replace them in my 65. She runs okay but you can hear the bad bearings so I'm sure they need replacing. If not then I'll learn how anyway. Been poking around looking for step by step instructions and think I know enough without damaging it. Biggest thing I'm concerned with is getting all back together properly. Bearings should be here in a few days so guess I'll dive right in. I was surprised there wasn't more on youtube or here on tutorials on Saitos but from what I've seen I can do it till hit a snag then ask here. You haven't failed me yet. Love those Saitos. Just bought a used 91 (my biggest yet) to go on a Thunderbolt and can't wait to get it hung and running. Wish me luck! Jim

RE: Need help w / 20+ yr old Goldberg Piper Cub
As far as power goes, I flew mine with floats with a 40 2 stroke and it did fine. I put on a 4 stroke also a 40 not realizing I was underpowering it and cept for the long take off roll it flies great. Probably more like the real thing. I had heard or read that the struts were functionalble on this plane but must not be true as I read where some don't use. It's a great flying plane and mine is probably around 20 years old too. I've had it for 10 or 11. I almost always take it to the field with me. With that 40 4 stroke I can stay up longer than almost anything else out there. Lots of fun to fly. Hope you have fun with yours. Good luck. Jim

I'll try to do that but it looks exactly like the TF 63" span kit but this one is 67". A friend is building the TF and I'm taking mine to compare to his to see if by chance it's the same with a longer wing. Kind of doubt it though. So have to get my son to help me post pics as I have only done that once before. Thanks, Jim

what kit is this P47?
Hey guys, I just picked up a nice P47 Razorback with a 67 inch span and I want to find out what kit it is to get the manual/specs on it. Have any idea? I've searched but so far can't find one with this wingspan. Thanks for any help you can give me. I first thought it was an ARF but really believe it is a really nice built kit. Thanks, Jim

RE: not really seaplane question but...
Well I couldn't get to the torque rod where it enters the aileron easily enough without getting glue everywhere so I just drilled a hole in both just below the leading edge of the ailerons down to the rods and filled them with CA, first thin then medium to fill the hole. That tighten them up so much there's almost no slop at all now. That was all that was needed. Thanks for the tips. I was about to cut out the hinges and start all over after just assembling. Thanks again for the input. Jim

RE: not really seaplane question but...
Sorry for the delay... been putting my father in assisted living...tough, anyway great tips guys, I'm going to get the wing now and address it. There is lots of slop inside the ailerons (top big of holes) and I should have realized and fixed them before gluing hinges and I believe they forgot the tubes in the trailing edge grooves and that's why there is some much space in there. I may do both to tighten it up. Maybe it was one of the last ARFs to be assembled and they didnt care or ran out of parts. Who knows. I'll report back on what I find and how I fix it. Thanks again for all the responses. Just when I think all is lost you guys come up with solutions I'd never dream of. Jim

not really seaplane question but...
My ailerons have some slop from a shoddy torque rod install (ARF) and wondering how much it will affect the plane. It's a Seamaster and one has an 1/8 inch of movement and the other has 3/16. Between the two it's quite a good bit. I know fludder is a concern but I don't usually fly flat out (might not matter) I just hate to have to cut out those hinges and redo after I just put it toghether. But I guess I should and epoxy the holes and redrill to get them tighter. Bad thing is that the torque rods also wiggle a good be where they stick out of the wing making me think they have too large a groove in the balsa trailing edge stock. Thoughts? Thanks, Jim

RE: Modeler or ARfer?
Both! You give a complex ARF to someone that is not a modler and well you know what will happen. As Harry Higley says in his book... they are not "Almost Ready to Fly". I've built a few kits and really love it but don't have shop space right now nor time. I hope to change both soon. I'm working on a couple of ARF's and love getting them that someone has either crashed or given up on and bring it back to life. Done that a few times. Best one was a $10 H9 80" Cub. I love them all. As far as awards for AFR's that really should be separate category to be fair. 20 hours vs. 200 not really the same thing. Jim

RE: Seamaster throttle servo size/attachement??
I was assuming it was due to the servo being attached directlly to the pylon which the motor mount is connected to which that much and that close vibration was what was killing my servos. At least one of them died I know but not sure about the first one. I really should have checked to be sure. They both happend on one flight. Now after getting a smaller servo I actaully have room to mount it on posts like you do on a plate in the wing for aileron serovs. So I could do that on rubber mounts. I guess the servo tape serves the same purpose and as well? I guess I'll try and see how it works this time and be ready for a dead stick. I know now they won't glide like a trainer and if on water I"ll have plenty of room to come in but at the field maybe not. Aint this stuff fun? Going to watch a new fiberglass 26 lb gas engine Zero take it's maiden today! 66 degrees outside! Jim

Seamaster throttle servo size/attachement??
I assume a small servo with the short pushrod connection is all that is needed on the Seamaster especially since it is being glued to the pylon? I've had maybe two go bad and cause a deadstick and a crash and I thought was due to vibration killing the servo. Is the best way to just use servo tape for the attachment of it? Or should you zip tie to foam somehow. Evidently most don't have that trouble like I have. I want to set it up the best that I can. Seems like I used two layers of tape last time and had no problem at least till the elevator servo went out and I lost it. I guess I need to stop using used stuff on my planes as things do wear out don't they. Thanks for any input. I'm ready to finish up the engine pod and have to decide on the servo. Thanks, Jim

RE: Seamaster perfect engine??
Mangum 46, that a 2 stroke? I had a 46 OS FX on my last one and flew great. Actually the engine pylon is still in tact (after the crash) and can be plugged right into the new one if I don't to finish up my new engine setup yet. For flight testing I suppose. Or maybe I should not in case the 4 stroke doesn't fly as well. Planning on an OS Surpass 52.

RE: PICA WACO YMF 1/5 Scale build help.
I have an old 1/6 scale Pica Waco I'm restoring, and was told an OS 70 Surpass would fly it okay. I wonder as I asume it will be an 8 or 9 lb plane. I'm using Sig Koverall and paint so is that heavier than Utracote? I think it was planned for a ST 75 and I got a brand new one with the plane but can't not go with a 4 stroke for this plane.
ORIGINAL: Lamoilleriver
ORIGINAL: scale only 4 me
ORIGINAL: Lamoilleriver Vast difference in performance when used strickly on water, have a OS .46FX in mine and felt it was pretty slow when using it from land and with wheels, wheels removed and less drag I'm happy with its flying. Think the OS .52 would be OK when strickly used from the water.
I'm guessing you fly from Grass [;)] I'm going to agree with MinnFlyer,, a 52 is going to be marginal,, All things considered, weight, small wing area, higher wing-loading,, you'll want more power than a flat bottom airfoil type plane like a Cub normally would need... I'd go with a 65-70 range engine myself good luck
In 30 years of RC'ing, never flown from a paved surface, closest I get is a frozen lake. Paved runways and taxiways is only for the guy's in the model magazines.[:D][:D][:D] Run an OS.52 in a Great Planes Cherokee 40, flies well, certainly no speed demon, would think it would run well in the Seamaster.
Thanks Lamo, That's what I was hoping. I have a Saito 56 in my GP Cherokee and at first flew pretty sluggish but after the proper prop flews great. I'm going to check the weight of that thing compared to the Seamaster if close I'll have to try the 52. If it doesn't work well I'll change it. I only have to change the mount to accept the bigger 70 if it's needed. Merry Christmas all! Jim

Look up the build thread by hookedonrc sp? and read through as much as you can stand as he and others contributed on all the changes and tips and I did and built a beautifully performing 7 pounder with a Saito 72. Flew great. Have another kit on the shelf I want to build another and just havent' gotten to it. It's in kit building by the way. Good luck, it's a great plane. After mine crashed and right away built an Astro Hog and it currently goes to the field with me almost every time. Also with a 72 Saito on it. Hoping to add floats to it soon and try if off the water. Jim

RE: Seamaster perfect engine??
ORIGINAL: MinnFlyer I also have to admit that one reason I prefer more power is that while I never use wheels on a Seamaster, I DO often fly them from grass. It's just a hoot to see them skidding along the ground!
I know what you mean Minn, I have a Sig Senorita that has Gee Bee plastic floats on it and I spray them with Pam and take off from grass myself. It slides around like its on ice. But I don't have any grass thats good enough for the Seamaster to take off from. Afraid it would damage the hull. Of course this is the ARF version. I'm thinking about the engines. My OS 46 FX was perfect, I sure don't want any less power than it or at least not much.

I'm definitely not a wring it out kind of guy and as long as it's adequate I'm good. Heck I fly a H9 80" span cub on wood floats with a Saito 56 and it's great. Takes a little skill to get it off the water but isn't that part of it, learning the skill? Once it's in the air it has more than enough power. That's nice looking plane by the way. Jim
