RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Great! Thanks, Doug... Curt
ORIGINAL: Doug Andre Curt, The Aluminum doors are very strong and need no stiffeners.  The  Robart legs are threaded for two 4-40 bolts.  No other mounts are employed.  Regards, Doug
RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Doug... Thanks for the info and photos. Do you still just use the two 4-40 machine screws to mount the door, or do you have other attachment points or reinforcement? Do you still need to add the stiffiner strip? Thanks again... Curt

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Doug... I think I will follow your suggestion and make new doors out of aluminum. It seems the way to go for durability. Can you give some more detail about their construction? What is the thickness of the sheet aluminum you used? How did you attach the doors? Etc. Any chance you could snap a photo or two? many thanks... Curt
ORIGINAL: Doug Andre Ron, We gently curved our doors for a good fit into the wells. We matched the airfoil shape.    I gave a lot of thought to the material failure and first wondered if a small amount of Loctite could have affected the strength of the plastic where it may have wicked onto the door.    I used the blue version which was supposed to be plastic safe.    There was no evidence of Loctite anywhere on the door.    Could I have overtightened the screws crushing the door at the attachment point?   The door on my ship was folded with as much force as I could apply with my hand. I had no idea that the airstream could do so much damage.   We just went straight to the Aluminum since it would hold the airfoil shape, could not be crushed by the mounting bolts and would not ever be affected by any type of thread locker.   The Aluminum took paint and rivet detail very well so I am satisfied. RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hi Nick... Thanks for the tips! I actually hadn't added the plastic shims but just now experimented with two #6 washers under each of the retract mount's outer mounting holes and it now seats nice and flush with the wing. What size Robart wheels are you using? I was thinking of ordering a set of 5" aluminum wheels myself. Here's a couple of pics:
ORIGINAL: njmheli Hi Curt. Trying to see exactly what the fit problem is............I didn't have any problems : When you cut away the wing rib..........can you rotate the wheel in the ''well'' in the retracted position...? ( don't forget you have to add the ''clear-plastic'' spacers at the two outermost bolts on the Robart chassis, these will tilt the whole oleo downwards into the well a bit more). My wheels, and I'm using the Robart 8 spoke ali-wheels,rotate in the well in the retracted position. Also ensure that the oleo / whell alignment is not too much toe-in or toe-out..........this will also affect the seating of the wheel on that ''rib'' you have partly cut-away...... Your length on the oleo to the main door looks about right, looks as if you havn't ''drilled the holes as yet to mount the main door...? Also ensure that the oleo is firmly seated in the ''retract-pivot block''.........Robart only give that end a ''quick scuff'' to remove the gray primer there....... I'll try to take some photo's of my gear-well etc to show you.........( just about finished the instal on the Stbd wing ). Cheers..............Nick (UK).
Shimming worked! I used 2 #4 washers under each of the retract's outboard mounting holes and that did the trick. Pics show a nice, flush mount! Curt

RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
Ron... Thanks for that. i think I'm going to try shimming the outboard ends of the retracts and see if that will make the unit retract farther into the wheel well. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue. I wonder how John Redman got his to fit so well? Curt
ORIGINAL: Ron101 My doors were way worse than that... I'd say the doors and the worst thing in the kit. The rest is great... I used heat and bent the doors to fit.... I did it over a few nights. When I was done for the day I would extend the gear and heat with an Iron at 325 with a sock.... I'd bend them the best I could then put the door down and heat it more and tape it over night....took a few trys but it's pretty good now little jinky on the gear doors... there kind of filmsy too
RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Hey guys... I'm installing my electric Robart retracts and am having an issue with the fit of the main gear door. I have removed some of the wing rib as instructed to by the manual but I can't seem to get the middle of the gear door to fit flush and was wondering if any of you had the same problem? Iv'e included a couple of pics... #1 shows the problem. The area over the axle is about 1/8 inch high. #2 shows the inner door which fits perfectly. Thanks for any help! Curt

RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
Hi Ron... I have a couple of questions for you! I am working on my retracts at the moment (Robart electrics) and was wondering how much (if any) of the wing rib you had to remove to get the main gear door to sit flush into the wheel well? The wheel seems to be retracted fully into the wing (I shaved off a little of the rib) but the door is high in the center where it rests on the axle. Also. did you have any trouble with installing your flaps? I have one working (left wing) but can't seem to get the same centering and movement on the right panel. I am moving ahead with the rest of the build as I don't want to get bogged down with one issue. I tend to get frustrated and won't get anything done if I do! Thanks in advance for any help... Curt

RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
Ron... I had considered the Hacker A-80 as I had one on a TF giant scale P-47 and it worked great, but lots more $$ than the Rimfire. But, unquestionably, a better motor! I plan to use Hyperion 35c 5500 6S (x2). I am just getting into the build now as I've been dinking around with other projects first. My only real concern with the Rimfire motor is how I'm going to be able to use a Tru Turn hub as they are all drilled for 10-32 bolts and the Rimfire shaft is solid. At least the Eflite motor's shaft uses a 12mm adapter and they are pre-drilled for a 10-32 bolt, so it would work fine. I just ordered the Rimfire, so I'll give it a good look over and see what can be done about the hub as the Jug has to have one! If I can't find a solution, I'll return it and just settle on the Eflite motor for now, even though I'll have to add dead weight. Hope to hear a maiden report soon! Curt

RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
Hey Ron... I don't like dead weight either and was planning on the Power 160 but after hearing about the weight needed, I may go with a Rimfire 50cc which weighs 44 oz and has a Kv of 230. Plus it puts out nearly 5000 watts continuous, so with 12S, I may be able to swing a Solo Prop 4 blade, although I will initially fly it with a two blade. What do you think of the Rimfire 50? http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXJW5&P=7 Curt

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Thanks, John... that's what I ended up doing as well. Just as a quick aside it turns out that both Ron101 and I are short an electric motor mount for our models. Seeing that some more have arrived is there any chance you could ring customer support for us and make sure we get one? I called them last week and was supposed to get a return call but never did. Both Ron and I received the battery tray parts but not the motor mount parts. Thanks! Curtis Hughes
ORIGINAL: John Redman I ended cutting into a couple of the mount blocks. When you cut the cowl slits, just have a steady hand with the Dremel.....When I was cutting mine,I forgot about the mountings....luckily,I only just caught one with the disc!!! RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Post (question) for John Redman... Hi John... I am attempting to duplicate your detail work on the cowl by cutting the cowl flap slits out as you described in your post. How did you keep from cutting into the cowl mounting blocks glued into the cowl when you did this? I noticed that several of the blocks are aligned with the cowl slits and I don't want to damage them. Thanks for your great build thread! Curt
ORIGINAL: John Redman Next I wanted to add a few little details to help bring the model to life. Nothing crazy just simple stuff. First was the cowl flaps. They need to be better defined. So using a Dremel 409 cutoff wheel I cut the edges of the cowl flaps . One done I then ran some 220 grit sandpaper between them to clean up the edges. I also cut the cowl flaps in the top of the cowl that were not molded into the model. Simple and easy this helps bring the front of the model to life. pic #1 shows cutting each cowl flap side with the Dremel tool and cutoff wheel. pic #2 shows cleaning up the edges with some 220 grit sandpaper. pic #3 shows the cowl flaps all cut loose and the more scale effect that has come to life because of it. Hi Dave... I intend to use a sequencer from Oregon Scale Aviation called the "MicroGear Ultra" and is very well built, right here in the USA. The instruction manual can be downloaded so you can see exactly how it operates and is a very simple unit to use. It supports up to 4 servos (mains, staggered gear, doors and tailwheel) through your retract switch. RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
My motor mount/battery tray backorder arrived last Wednesday and when I opened the package I was surprised to see a sealed bag with the lite ply parts for the battery tray but no motor mount! I called Horizon on Wednesday and spoke to a customer service gal and she said she would check with product support and see if there was anything that could be done as the kit is once again back ordered and not expected to be in stock until November. She said she would call me back the next day but, we'll I guess she forgot. Mr. Redman... if you're not using that motor mount box for the Power 160 that is in one of the video segments, I'd sure like to have it so I can fly this season. [:D] Curtis Hughes

Looking good, Ron... I decided (mostly because the Robart electric retracts were in stock at Horizon again) to send the WS retracts back for a refund. I received them a couple of days ago and they are a true drop-in unit. The WS retracts looked very good though but I just got a feeling to stick with a brand I knew. I am currently taking my time and ironing the Ultracote down as John Redman suggests and plan to add a few details to the dummy radial and get started on her next week. Keep the posts coming... Curt

RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
Hey Ron... I don't think you would be disappointed but I know what you mean about Robart. Plus, the price includes free shipping. I think the best description I can think of for these retracts is, "E-flites on steroids". Personally, I've had it with air retracts. It's only a matter of time before an air leak occurs and then it's Sherlock Holmes time trying to figure out where the problem is! Each main retract weighs exactly 8.0 oz and the tail retract unit is 5.7 oz. Not too shabby! Hope this helps... Curt
ORIGINAL: Ron101 Shoot Curt, those look pretty dam good Not bad at all for $539.95 for the whole set... there $100 bucks cheaper than the E-Robarts The Robart air are $464 + a $20 servo for air valve - $484 so you save $75 bucks.... but may have an air leak Can you throw them on a scale when you get a chance.... I might be down for a set of these. I'm pretty die hard Robart, but I have electric retracts in my Habu 32 and just love plugging in and flying. Thank for sharing your info
RE: New Hanger 9 P-47 30cc and electric friendly
Well, my Wingspan retracts arrived in today's mail and I thought I'd post a few pics, especially for Ron101. Overall, my initial impression is that they seem to be of good quality, all nicely machined pars and the cycling is *very* quiet! They are also lighter than I expected but with 1/2 inch struts, they should look and perform nicely. I have not seen the Robart electric retracts so I cannot compare them "apples to apples". I will say the the Robart tailwheel, with it's shock absorbing piston shown in John Redman's build thread may have the edge on these, however this isn't a really heavy model so it may not be an issue. The Robart tailwheel is basically their heavy duty mechanism designed for very large warbirds with an electric actuator replacing the air cylinder. I will say they all appear at first look to be of good quality and at a reasonable price. I did notice that the retract housing is about 1/16 of an inch or so wider than the ply mount in the wing panel but other than that, the mains appear to be a drop-in fit. The strut length appears to be correct as well. I haven't had time to check the tailwheel fit yet but will report as I get started on the model. Hope this helps all those on the fence about these!
