Magnum Timing
I have a 1.20 Magnum and after dismantling for recondition can't find any timing marks or info on the cam timing. Does any one have any info on how to set up the cam timing.

UBEC'S
I have been using Turnigy UBEC's with 2c Lipos and have not had a problem with 2.4gig. I would like to know if anyone has had a failure using UBEC's as some brands of radios don't recommend them. I am concidering using two in parallel just for safety sake. If anyone has had a failure,I would like to know.

RE: Catalina retracts
AmishWarlord I will get some photos together and post them of my progress. I think the USA colours are good but I have to paint mine in Quantas colours or Coastal Command as I am an Aussie and the more visable the better. I like the well used look with oil stains and paint chipping off as the look more realistic. I have seen a Black Cat flying and visabilty is terrible! I think the mod they do on the nose spoils the shape so mine has the gun turret. Thanks for the info, I am determined to build my own retracts and do not want to reinvent the wheel.

Catalina retracts
I have built a 106" span PBY and need some help to make a simple, semiscale retract for the mains. I have the full size drawings but this is not practicle as the original has a hydraulic cylinder and at this scale does not work. Some one has solved this problem before I am sure, so any ideas are welcome.[:o]

RE: Sopwith Dove Plan
Thanks for info KDC , the magazine I got the plan out of is Radio Control Scale Aircraft Aug/Sept 1994, argus ASP publications page 53 and has a Vickers Vimy on the front cover. I can't find a 3-view even to get some scale for the undercarriage,so I might use a PUP 3-View.C,ofG you stated is at middle of fusealage I guess as wings are swept back. The link to the MAG152 is the plan thanks.

Sopwith Dove Plan
I started a Sopwith Dove from an enlarged plan in Scale Aircraft 4 years ago and have decided to finish it. Problem is that I can't find the plan. I have the magazine and the article but no plan to enlarge. Would anyone have this plan that I could copy and I am happy to supply a copy of the enlarged one as well if I can get a loan of it. The structure is 90% complete but I need undercarriage, cowel, C of G , and struts etc to complete.

RE: Modifying Crank Pin SC 1.20
Thanks for the reply pe reivers, I am open to suggestions so if you think it would be fine with the bronze bush I will give it a go. A lot less work to do the conversion if I use the original bush. Would 20:1 mineral oil be safe? I noticed you said mineral or caster oil and not a modern synthetic 2-stroke oil. Is this because of cost or do the minerals burn with the combustion?

Modifying Crank Pin SC 1.20
I am converting a SC 1.20 to gas and because there is not enough material in the rod for a needle roller of 8 dia I am fitting a 6 dia bearing and pressing in a dowel pin into the counterweight as a crank pin. My sticking point is how to press in the pin and make sure it is square to the crank shaft. Maybe some one has done this in the past and could reveal their secret method. I would like to change to a needle roller and run 40:1 oil as my ryobi's use 40:1 and plug fowling could be a problem at 20:1 with the plain bearing. Although I have noticed the new Saito 20 runs 20:1 with spark ignition and bronze bush on big end! I would be interested to know how long the plugs last or if the plug fowls up.

RE: Hopper Tank
I am having trouble with a motor going lean during the flight.I start the flight four stroking and 5 min later it comes on strong then gets leaner and stops.I thought a hopper tank at the engine would give better mixture control.Any suggestions welcome. Motor is a OS 108 tank set at half way to needle valve.

Ryobi engine mount
I have had great success with my Ryobi (XYZ) ignition ,swings a 20 x 10 and idles at 1000 RPM. I am interested to find out how many engines are mounted solid to the firewall and how many are rubber mounted. My motor has rubber cushions on the stand off's but I have been recently told this reduces the power of the engine when compared to a hard mounted engines. Any comments on this?

RE: Ryobi vibration
I have my Ryobi running great now and working on a second one, I love it . It is so reliable and now smooth running as well. I think the motor was detonating on the coleman fuel as the compression has improved with time. I am now using 95 octane petrol and a 20 x 10 master prop with plenty of weight in it to smooth the pulses out. At peak rpm the vibration is minimal and with a electronic ignition it starts second flick once primed. Opening up the thrttle from about half produces no further increase in power though so I think it it over proped but I don't need the power . Thanks for the replys and help. I have a 2 long shafts and 1 short but they all have the good reed valve!

RE: Ryobi vibration
Curiosity got the better of me and I stripped down a ryobi 32cc and weighed piston conrod etc and applied it to a formula 1/2 reciprocating weight + the rotating weight on the crankn pin. It works out to 38gm which I hung on the crank pin and it balanced perfectly! I will look at the prop etc now thanks for the comments and reasurance.

Ryobi vibration
I converted a 31cc Ryobi for CDI ignition fitted a balanced prop and ran it on a test stand. I was disappointed with the vibration at idle and at high rpm. I also have a mag fitted ryobi and find this vibrates at idle but not to bad at higher rpm. I rebalanced the flywheel of the mag fitted motor and the vibration was worse than before. I have therefore concluded that the ryobi does rely on a out of balanced flywheel for dynamic balance. What suprises me is that the converted motors with CDI ignition and no fly wheel to balance them must be out of balance . Do the successful Ryobi motors use an out of balanced prop to smooth them out. Has any one been able to convert a sweet running ryobi and what is the secret to balancing these motors.

RE: How can I calculate the Amps
Thanks for the calcs Dr Kiwi. I only have the motor on for 30 sec or so and by your figures it should unload in the air and be about 17 amp. I don't want to cook the speed controller and the BEC so I will keep the otor runs short and get a 30 A controller. Last thing I expected was a reply form a Kiwi in Chattanooga. I beleive they are restoring the train station there but the rail line is no longer running ,what a shame.

How can I calculate the Amps
I have a geared brushless in a glider and I want to check the amps incase I blow the speed controller and BEC. Can any one estimate the amps from these results so I can be sure a 18A speed controller will be O/K.

Ryobi conversion vibration
I have a Ryobi 31 cc installed and flying and I am very happy with the reliability power and economy of the engine. I am not so happy with the vibration during high and low speed though and if I could figure out how to balance the motor I would convert another and build a 'Spirit of St Louis' with a Ryobi for power. Does anyone know how to balance these engines as I know the flywheel is not balanced as per other weed wackers, but balanced with the crank as an assembly. When I machined the flywheel I balanced it back to the out of balance of the stock flywheel, but the motor is not as smooth as it should be. Are there any tricks to smoothing out the vibrations?

glow gas 4 -stroke radial
Has anyone tried glow gas on a 4-stroke? A friend is making a 9 cylinder radial 4-stroke and is using a walbro carby. It would be simpler to run without ignition so I thought glow gas might be the answer. The motor is a whirlwind and it will go into a Ryan, spirit of st louis eventually, it has needle rollers on the master rod and separate oil tank for cam shaft .Would glow gas work with a four stroke plug.

corona receivers
Test flew a small spitfire today 700mm wing span but it crashed after receiverl lost range. Tested ok on ground with brushless motor runnung but I lost it at about 100 metres when the alerons deflected full and it spun in and crashed. I left the transmitter on in the pound and when I picked it up the alerons were still fully deflected. I was using a corona RP421 40mgz synthesised receiver and I am not that impressed as I have never lost an electric before even with my old futaba 29 meg AM set. Any one had any experience with these receivers before.Receiver was well away from speed controller and brushless motor up the front well away. Does anyone have any ideas
