RE: How to seal a wooden boat? (many pinholes)
Are you asking me Corazzata ? If yes. The answer is , yes. Try it a few simple times on different types of scrap wood to get very good. ........Remember ALMOST ANY type of crack & hole filler will PROBABLY take a DIFFERENT darkness thann the bare wood. Trial & error for each type. That is why I have become MUCH better at hand fitting any odd shaped outer wood skins into place. Rich

RE: How to seal a wooden boat? (many pinholes)
I use Ultra light weight wall spackle from H D or Lowes. .............ONLY...............If it is not a edge that will be banged or bumped a lot. It WILL SAND JUST LIKE BALSA. It is softer than ALL woods. Leaves NO raised hard spots like glues or Epoxy. Are your pinholes from construction pins ? If yes. You can sometimes completly close them completly with steam from a clothes iron. I CAREFULLY try the iron on delibertly pinholed wood of the same type to get the FEEL. I have also just put a tiny drop of water on a few holes. lots of holes received a wipe down with a wet cloth & then the steam iron. PRACTICE these types on SCRAP woods FIRST. Rich

RE: EDF reversing for air brakes
[:D][:D][:D] Way to think it out FIRST on paper. I still think popping a chute & having the tail fly off COULD be exciting ?? Stay with the FAILSAFE in foward relays idea. Trouble shooting will be a no brainer that way. My best wishes to you & the " BUFF ". [;)] Try to mount the relays with the moving contacts in the vertical position. That way a hard landing will PROBABLY NOT cause a split second shift in the contacts. If the relays are deenergized in FWD & the FWD contacts are all on the very bottom. OK..........If the unclosed REV contacts are the highest up. OK. A hard landing WILL NOT cause a momentary shift to REV at full speeds. Either way will work on a hard landing. DEFINATELY put a STEEL tail skid on her. Rich

RE: Pirate Ships
Jhalfen. The Pirate ship you said had a poor rating could be a real winner !!.........Why ? Because other people are telling you what is wrong with it. You can correct the leak problems as you build it. Leaks in a plastic boat are solved by LIGHTY sanding ANY seams that are to be glued together. Lighty wipe All hull gluing surfaces on the inside & along the seam lines with a CLEAN cloth or paper towel & Alcohol. Glue together & then use cheap blue masking tape from Home Depot or any other place to hold the seams SNUGLY together. After the main seams of the hull have COMPLETLY dried. 1 or 2 days. Then we REALLY waterproof the seams.................With a tube of GE ...Silicone rubber...... Wipe the seams AGAIN with Alcohol and LIGHTLY smear the rubber over the seams. About a 1" wide. 2 more days. I gaurantee it is waterproof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Done for over 40 plastics. The screws pulling out is doable with scraps of Pine wood & the Rubber again. Worst case if room is not available. We LIGHTLY run the screw threads in some THICK grease, wipe of the excess so just aVERY THIN FILM is on them. Mix up some 5 minute EPOXY and put a blob ON TOP OF & INTO THE THREADS in the holes. Run the greasy screws in the wet EPOXY holes.........Be back supper

RE: waxing hull...or sanding?
Here is my 4 cents.................WW II ELCO 70' PTB Standard speed was 42 knots with a 33 ton boat . They installed 6 steps to the bottom & sides. Speed jumped to 56 knots and cornered better................Very large dimples?? Boats travel fastest when completly in air. Only the prop & rudder need to be in the water to qualify as a " real boat ".

RE: Engel Submarine Kit Builder
Hi AQUASUB. Is there a large difference between the seal failure rates of my sub that I have adjusted to run as a dynamic diver. It runs at most, 2' to 3' deep. Compared to hardcore diving depths ? What depths are done ? Is it a " Kamakasi " dive, due to the loss of signal as depth increases ? Thanks Rich

RE: Engel Submarine Kit Builder
The good thing about our model shaft bearing areas is how...... small of a area........... is actually being in danger of deforming . On my 1/4" diameter shafts only about .030" to .060"of the circular seal face is in a "" bendable area "". The rest is pressed in place by a SS ring and much thicker. Bearing seal faces come in all weird face shapes. Some help & others make a leak occur faster. We just have to check with the bearing mfgr. to find out. BIG phone bills for a little detail. [:'(] Still, the bearing tube & shaft with a few thousandths of clearence works very well. I put Vasaline in the 1st one I did to a few thousandths. 6" long & the size 280 motor could bearly turn it at room temperatures. Would have flamed the motor easily in the water..........Oil is all that should be used in close fitting shafts & tubes.

RE: Engel Submarine Kit Builder
I could not remember the depth versus pressure changes. Pressure increase @ 33' down is 1 atmosphere. 14.7 # increase more than surface air pressure. So we have a worst case of the seal at 33' resisting the difference of 15#. A problem may occur in the water being able and wanting to push itself into the WTC due to the compression of the 14.7#of PSI air in the chamber. That problem in our subs is handled by a VERY VERY close fit of the shaft diameter & the stuffing tube inside diameter. I run a few thousandths at MOST. I spin the driveshaft with a electric drill in a vise & constantly hand sand down the shaft till the shaft just slips in for the entire length. Oil works fine on 3" & longer. At 6" long & longer I switch to SS Sealed ball & thrust bearings to reduce needless shaft drag. Rich

RE: Engel Submarine Kit Builder
Well all surface boats have a .......submerged prop, bearings, stuffing tube and a set of bearings near the motor. So the water pressure 4" down is the same for both sub & surface boats. That is the depth where all types of boats shaft seals spend 99 % of their time. My Gato has no leaks at 2' down running for 2 minutes. True, I do use SS sealed bearings in all boats. The change in water pressure is very little from 4" to 5'. I can look up the pressure change fom 4" to 5' if that would help. A sealed bearing with a low friction neoprene seal actually squeezes the shaft tighter as the outside pressure builds upon the shaft and seal face. At least mine do.

Aquasub. Putting grease in it center section will just increase shaft drag. The real sealing is at the sintered bushings. I like the design.

I just use SS bearings / shafts & brass tube coated on the inside with a VERY thin grease. 8' PTB has run for years with no maintaince. Same setup for the rudder. Fine also. I did sand down the shaft for about a .003" to .005" fit. Important to any grease / oil fit & seal.
