RE: Norvel .074 on a tuned pipe
Not sure this is Relevant or merely a Rant :-) Years ago (early/mid 70's) in my misspent youth I fielded factory race bikes for Yamaha. Genuine world beaters back then :-) Rebuilt, modified and redesigned a 'few' Exp chambers in process.. Still remember a bit about them. These were invented as Sonic devices. Material resonance is Critical ! Ali and Carbon fibre are erm Useless at that. Ever seen any musical instruments of either material? Also Millimeters were critical. There is NO 'good enough' .. it's either Exact or Crap. Chamber design involves long PITA calculations and/ or a V pricey Program and still depends on Micrometer measurements Toy airplane fitments are IMO a sad joke. They ONLY look like chambers. Yet some dullards persist in paying large for looks alone. PT Barnum would be proud. A tested/developed /tuned length of ...straight ex tube ...will work 'at least ' as well .. true. Don't Believe? spend the few weeks testing and reinventing the wheel firsthand As an oddity factoid ; only recently was I made aware (had eyes opened) that toy 2 strokes were actually Orders of Magnitude.. less.. sophisticated and powerful than even "street' 2 stroke engines... cc vs cc despite the total lack of nitro in the gasoline fueled moto versions to add insult to injury. I had always assumed the reverse .. In complete error. Pretty well a moot point given that only a few serious 2 stroke Bike engines currently exist especially so with the recent demise of Moto2 GP... $250K.. 250 cc race only engines tho.

RE: Shaft driven props
Dunno IF this applies: But Electric Motors when fitted with driveshafts for Air propellers, be they solid, tube or even CF tube, develop Serious Vibration / resonance issues... Airframe damaging typically. Band aid finally found was have a flexi coupling at the engine end; Rubber Tube.. Spring etc? But the real 'fix' was to gimbal mount the engine itself (yup 2 axis) so the generated harmonics have nowhere to go Sounds odd indeed, But having seen it in action.. it's a V effective solution.

Those crappy Zinc lead(?) alloy backplates would often deform and even break under the screws. Discovered as a Kid (with No spare $) that Solder stuck to the backplates as if they were of copper :-) IMO JB weld is surprisingly lo grade epoxy... the power of advertising in action.

Doesn't seem that heavy.. for an old skool 1/2 a If that's a correct weight. Built a few House of Balsa' 1/2 A's' that were more weight than that and they flew OK on a TD 051. But better on an 09 though.

Interesting model. But frankly the constant use of telephoto and zoom. Really messes up my ability to deduce/perceive the true speed of the thing. Based on the video alone she seems a bit sloow. Hopefully that's just the videoing problem?

RE: Monokote that 1/2A
Nice covering work.. If I might suggest ? Try one of the 'other' films, aqs these are typically far more user friendly. IMO Monokote is The hardest covering to apply well... as you have done. Also the heaviest covering with the possible exception of that Coverite fabric 'stuff' and It shatters on impact, not great when experienced. Goalposts have moved quite a long ways since monokote was the first available covering film..

RE: any body have the kit of 1/2a hobby shack sst?
Ooops sorry didn't know the pedigree of the silly thing. I just bought the kit, presumably like everybody else, because it was too cheap to pass up. A friend, who builds stunters (to perfection) CNC cuts his foam cores, mostly hollowed, on the machine and uses balsa sheeting and capstrips, then carefully removes the foam in the bays between the cap strips. He claims there is still a slight weight gain over a built up wing, with the advantage being a worthwhile increase in rigidity. A compromise he deems worth the effort. All one needs is a CNC foam machine and the skills to use it :-) My view remains steadfast : the 1/2A SST should stay a forgotten footnote, it really wasn't a memorable item.

RE: any body have the kit of 1/2a hobby shack sst?
that's funny... $11 for a copied 'plan' .. the kit cost me less than $10 bux direct from Hobby shack.. back when. Model is mediocre to crappy. Still have it though stored in the rafters Too cheap to bin it ..basically. The wing is the only neat thing about it being foam with sheeted leading edges and cap strips.. Tooooo heavy though The fuse splits almost instantly, the engine mount setup guarantees fuel foaming on a TD... Not good. The elevator is too small to be effective. There IS reason it was a Very Cheap kit.

RE: INSTANT CURE TO WINTER BLUES! ONLY $235!!
ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace How many rpm do you get with that set up with the Cyclone? I have several of that size fan, and the electrics get them easily over 40,000. That just looks like too much load to me for an IC engine of that size. Maybe a .15? I would like to see and hear that thing spin!
Absolutely agreed! I have $12 !! hobby king motors that hit 40,000 rpms on a wemotec 70mm fan, which incidentally, is of 'higher' spec than the one that pore lil Cyclon is lumbered with. You are running it for the Sound of a wee 2 stroke burning itself out. Not for the performance derived. Horses for Courses Kids.

RE: Joy Stick
I still have mine ;-0 also built a longer span wing with ailerons.. after a short while as the plan wing wasn't great. flies fine and far 'better' with the extra 6'' span and especially with the ailerons. Never even bothered making / fitting the wheels .. what for? Build one ? it's a fast build.. do suggest building it lighter, as there's no need whatsoever for the 1/8" fuse, although mine did survive a 80/100' power dive, Stuka style, early on, onto a currogated steel roof , largely unscathed because of the overbuilt construction.

RE: AME 061 Needle valve which one?
Thanks Gents.. Clearly .. at least now :-) I'm going to give the remote valve a try. No NV breakage issues and No fingers in the prop problems.. welll almost :-) 100% reversible and transferable, as bonus. Have a few KK TD NV gizmos, never occured to retrofit one of those onto the norvel. Yer a far more determined man than I mr CP :-) I have a VA mk1, fitted with a very tight to the venturi, large nubbly brass wheel that makes even the Cyclon one look 'far away'. Sure it's less exposed, but scary to use.. maybe I just need a plastic glue on longer thumbnail ? otherwise, ain't no free lunch, as always. But I'm.. not... dismantling working setups to make this one work, this is a standalone exercise.

AME 061 Needle valve which one?
Just finished an old (1992) 1/2A combat kit. Lovely arrow shaft / ribs wing, state of the art in ...90 :-) I'm fitting a new Norvel 061 big mig (prerevlite but not the higher spec AME version) to it. Even have a hoarded new (original style) rubber ducky 5 x 3 on it. Plane is set up for bladder, Motor isn't. I have 2 choices of fine needle valves : Texas Timer OR Kitting it. The TTimer looks to need JB welding in place the Kitting one needs Venturi redrilling. Presumably, both are good product ? Hopefully installed with a minimum of long term damages? OR I could try a remote NV assembly maybe something cobbled to gether from bits from an RC car shoppe... Still need a fine NV tho. A remote would at least save the NV when I Dork the thing.. inevitable imo.. as my reflexes have not improved with age. Thoughts/ advise on this gentlemen ?

A sorta short Goss wing? :-) I've had No darn luck with those wee sullivan snake/cables.. ever. They always added so much drag that the servo was struggling or the control was just plain sloppy, usually both happened. A 5 gram servo next to the aileron surfaces could be good? certainly be no issues with creaky /sloppy linkages :-).

RE: Herr Engineering Pitts Special 24
Thank You! that will be used :-) Nice models that you have built there The Tunnan with the yellow & chrome on it.. is it a ducted fan.. I have to ask as I can't see any propeller. But then the inlet /ex are scale like.. so I'm not sure, either way :-). Foam & brown paper is a Fine technique. I find it tricky to get on just enough white glue to permanently stick the paper to the foam. A few models suffered from delamination after a summer's season until I realised i needed to up the glue/ water mix ratio. I just paint my paper skins with acrylics though. Hey! I also have a couple of Conquest radios, that still work just fine .
