RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
ORIGINAL: matfree What to do about the baffle???? Well i got the bottom baffle set up just fine. Now we go to the top cowl area for the baffle and I am having trouble trying to make somthing work so i can take the cowl off with the mufflers on. So are you guys just cutting around the muffler all the way to the back of the cowl so you can just slip it on strait? Some help would be great!
Why not make a 2-piece upper and/or lower baffles??? The rear half would be fastened to the firewall, in back of and around the mufflers, and the front half attached to the inside of the cowl.......................[;)]
ORIGINAL: aaxiss I also gotta believe that the DL 100 has more torque than a single 85cc as the engine fires every 180 degrees as opposed to every 360. any how I got the fuel proofing done. doesn't look as bad as I thought and I only used 2.2 oz and about 50% was alcohol that mostly will evaporate.
Isn't the DL-100 a simultaneous firing twin, like everything else out there?????? Seems to me that it would have really HORRIBLE vibration problems if it weren't..................................

RE: Lanier 94" Yak help
ORIGINAL: Bosshossv8
ORIGINAL: matfree Does anyone have a picture of the da-100 or dl-100 mounted on the firewall with the Cowl on. Trying to deside on 100cc or 85cc dont want to cut the cowl but would like to see what the 100cc's would look like and how they fly????? THanks Matt
I Don;t know how you guys with the twins are going to get enough air through the cowl to cool them. I know I will be gutting the bottom of mine, for sure. It may have to be braced with cf and overlayed glass , just for support. The only way I can see getting enough air through is opening the bottom completely, or fabbing a rear facing scoop. Some very delicate dremeling of the louvres may help , too...[:-][:-] Even baffled , where would the air go in a twin install? And have a larger exit than entrance is near impossible. I really think a healthy motor is going to need this cowl to be swiss cheese....um, Russian style[;)] I am just going attack mine with the dremel and Sharpie marker and see how it turns out. If the bottom, after being gutted, makes the cowl flimsy, I can lay cf rod around the perimeter of the hole and glass over it. Pain in the butt, but I can;t see another way.... Anyone?
Probably the best thing to do for cooling is make a baffle that covers the entire opening of the cowl, and just cut out openings in it for the cylinder head, fins, and crankcase of the engine that you're using. That cuts the inlet area way down, forces cooling air to only go through the fins, and reduces the size of the cutout you'll need for the air outlet. Finding a cosmetically appealing way of doing that is the challenge. I thought there was a company out there that made dummy radial engine plates for that purpose, but don't remember who...............................

NICE flying field, badfish, and NICE airframe [:D] !!!!! Looks like you're only using one aileron servo on each side (I was planning to do the same, as well as one rudder servo). I assume you're using Hitec 5955TG's or equivalent???? I suspect that a DA-85 probably is overkill on this size airframe........I have a 3W-75i that I'll put on mine. What is the AUW of your plane????

RE: Hitec 7955 ??
I think that the 7955's would be great to have, but the 5955TG's are essentially the same, and are available NOW. TBM has good prices on the 5955's, and I think that I would prefer them over the JR 8711's, ONLY because of the titanium geartrain (even though the JR's do have higher torque). Of course, if you really NEED 400 oz-in of torque, then the choice is obvious.........

Hey Bosshossv8, I just realized that you're not that far away from me (I'm in Milwaukee, WI, a bit due north from you). Would love to see your flying field and your (not so) POS Yak. RE: Lanier Extra 330 94" ARF
ORIGINAL: LearnedInUk I need to find a used ZDZ80 or a DA-85 for this baby and I will be good to start.
Lots of luck finding one of those. I think everything that was out there already got bought up, due to the Lanier buying frenzy. I managed to find an essentially new 3W-75i (it had only been run and setup by Catus Aviation), with smoke muffler. It's stamped as being a Cactus "Signature Series" engine, whatever that means. Should be plenty of power for this size aircraft................. I also ordered 10 of the HD Power servos from TBM (buy 5 get 5 free), and a buy-one-get-one-free prop. RE: Engine performance of 3W 75
ORIGINAL: yarom What is the price and weight (all included) comparison between the 3W 85CS and the DA-85? I show the 3W at 5.05 lbs. and $895 and the DA at 4.3 lbs. and $795... Not sure it includes muffler (9oz.) and ignition...
3W-85xi is $795 and rated at 9.2HP. 3W-85xiCS is $895 and rated 10.0HP. They're both listed at 5.05 lbs. RE: Engine performance of 3W 75
If LIGHT WEIGHT is one of the overriding concerns, then DA/DL/ZDZ are obviously the way to go (if they have the displacement you're looking for).......

RE: Engine performance of 3W 75
ORIGINAL: yarom For example, a 3W 50cc class engine has absolutely no advantage over a DA-50R, yet costs more. Same thing is true for 75 to 85cc class, 100cc class, etc. until 150cc. 3W Makes probably more sense when comparing in the higher sizes (until DA releases the 170) and certainly at 200cc and more (I think ZDZ has a large one). So in fact, you get less for the money for a 3W and the manufacturer and/or importer, have not adjusted pricing to be competitive in the American market.
As far as 50cc prices go, DA sells their 50cc for $595. Cactus Aviation sells the 3W-55i for $595. So it would seem that you get 10% MORE displacement for the SAME price, and a much more ruggedly built (although heavier) engine!!!!!!! It is rated at 5.5HP (vs DA's 5.0), and it comes with a 3-year warranty. OR, you can spend a little more ($715), and get the 3W-55iCS that's exactly the same weight, but rated at 6.5HP............................ Sorry if this is causing any controversy (Don't confuse me with the facts!!!!!!! [:D]).

RE: Engine performance of 3W 75
3W installs (3) bearings on the crankshaft, instead of (2) like DA/ZDZ use. It is supposed to provide much better crankshaft support, less vibration, and increased longevity. The dual counterbalance crankshaft also helps decrease vibration and resonance, vs. only a single counterbalance. The downside is a little more weight, but your airframe/radio equipment should last longer as well [sm=teeth_smile.gif] ............... They also come with a three year warranty - Does anyone else do that????
