I believe that is correct, everyone seems to have their method. I normally line the notch up so that when you look it it at the front it is at 10:30 (on the clock) with the head being 12 Oclock with the motor at TDC.

RE: Weston Magnum/Nelson Q40 maidened today w/ video...176mph!!
OK, the case is definately an OLDER SS motor. They originally used 4/40 bolts for the muffler, but that changed at least 5 years ago to 5/40. Some may call me crazy, but be thankful it is a SS motor for what you are using it for. They are far more user friendly, shake less, and hold together MUCH longer before failure than the LS motors. All at only a few MPH difference. Not a big deal for sport flying, but 4 mph = losing a 10 lap race by nearly half a lap. Running a LS muffler with a SS case if better than running a SS muffler with a SS case so your in good shape there. Take care of it, run it a little rich, and it will last a long time.

Its been at least a year since I've ordered any, but here is the info I found: Buy from National Balsa, Code #1161048, 1/16X10X48 Blasa sheeting. Last cost was 5.45 sheet. This product is not on his web site, you have to ask for it in 2 oz weight.

RE: Weston Magnum/Nelson Q40 maidened today w/ video...176mph!!
The Nelson head shims come in .001 (the thin aluminum one) and the others are brass .003, .005, and .008. I would put both shims back in it, just how you had it and see if your head cleaning made a difference. Then play with your props, then look at possibly lowering compression, but my guess is that that probably will not help. Lowering the head has always been looked at as a way of increasing speed, but doing the opposite can work also. A higher head setting, set richer, with a light prop, CAN improve your unload in the air and go faster than a high pitch, low compressed motor. I have had success going both ways. Typicallly I like the heads tighter on the Quickies, and the heads higher on the q40 motors, but lots of people are doing different things successfully to go fast. As long as you are keeping it rich, and documenting your changes, you should get a feel for what your motor likes, they are all a little different. Does your muffler have LS scracthed into the side of it near where it bolts to the engine? If it does not, you most likely have a SS motor (my guess).

That should work fine, the green scrubby works well also. I use to use Mothers metal polish which worked well also, although someone in the racing circuit mentioned that it left a residue that was not good. Not exactly sure about that, as it always worked fine for me, but you know racing rumors. The Pitted "moon craters" in the head are definately effecting performance. You may want to consider a new head, they are reasonable.

RE: How Many Gallons of Glow Fuel Do you Burn Up in a Year?
Wow John, thats a lot of flying. I buy a case of Powermaster (6 gallons) most years, and that is normally plenty. I typically burn up about 2 gallons in late June / early July getting ready for the Nats, and fly about 3-5 times each Saturday, 5 1/4 oz at a time about 6 months of the year. I proabably burn up at least a gallon annually just breaking in motors.

RE: Weston Magnum/Nelson Q40 maidened today w/ video...176mph!!
Well, its been a few years since they have made a brass sleeve (they are all aluminum now), and the top of that sleeve definately looks brass to me. I typiclally will leave my sport (local) racing motors together most of a season and only do an annual cleaning, but my traveling motors get tore down after every race, cleaned and re-oiled. You have to be careful getting the sleeve perfectly aligned, I don't see a way of doing it with the muffler on, but I've seen people try. The motor really only needs a couple runs after cleaning to "set" back into place. Everyone use to like a nice "tight" motor, but the fit on these is extremely good and "tight" or cold compression does not necessarily insure a fast motor.

RE: Need speed proppeller,Patriot,O.S.95AX
I know were the extreme speed group, but a 12x6 on a .95 2 stroke?? That's a bit small for the AX motors which are designed for max power at lower RPM numbers. It may be ok for breakin, but don't think RPM is the only way to go fast. I'm betting you could put a pretty big load on that motor and get speed just as easily as letting it rip with a small prop.

RE: Weston Magnum/Nelson Q40 maidened today w/ video...176mph!!
If you take the glow plug out, you can clean the carbon out of the head with some 0000 steel wool, nothing rougher. Should shine up real nice. If you want, you can remove the backplate, slide the sleave out the top, and pull the piston off the crank. You can then clean the top of the piston with the steel wool also. Be carefull not to hit the edges of the piston, and do not use the steel wool on the sleeve. Once its all shiny, you need to either blow the steel wool residue off with air or with a can of carb cleaner. It sounds like the motor is running fine, so I wouldn't adjust any of the shims. These motors are pretty bullet proof as long as you don't run them lean. Over time they do start to slow up a tad, but still faster than any sport motor out there. Down the road, you may want to consider getting a new top end (Piston/sleeve/Head) and it will be like a new motor. For $150 it sounds like you got a good deal, the LS motors are only slightly faster.

looks to me like their is a brass shim on top of the sleeve. Also, that is pretty dark, that motor has had a few runs on it and some of them on the lean side. I'll add more when I get to work, need to get ready.

RE: Weston Magnum/Nelson Q40 maidened today w/ video...176mph!!
I just saw this, nice plane. Don't get too tied up with the pitch numbers on these APC Carbon props or any math in calculating theoretical speeds. Rather than going up in pitch, you may go faster by going down in pitch. The 7.4 x 7.6 prop tends to be the fastest on average for me with a q40. I NEVER had any luck with the 8.1 pitch prop, it was just too much prop and wouldn't unload as well as the lighter pitched props. Your RPM of 24 something in the air seems low to me. You should be turning over 23k ON the ground with plenty of pinch (500 rpm minimum). Which should put you in the 25K - 26k range in the air. Maybe I missed it, but do you know if this is a Short Stroke or Long Stroke Nelson?? To be honest, I would be surprised if it was a a long stroke, but ya never know. Also, where did the motor come from, and do you by chance know where the Sleeve and Head are in terms of measurements? lastly, I would suggest adding either a Tetra bubbless or Jett Bladder tank to the plane. It will help keep that motor from going lean at the end of the run and make it easier to make needle settings. As to some of those prop mods, I'm not sure I would suggest modifying the APC props. I've seen them throw blades without modification, they need that beef, I'd hate to be in the way of a blade at those rpms.

RE: Airlite/Herex C71 foam core??
Why is balsa a pain to glue? I've worked with Rohacell and you would dislike its gluing properties much worse than balsa. I found it dificult to work with, especially trying to glass to it. Its rough surface made it difficult to spready laminating resin to it with a roller or squeege. It is also quite porous so I used more resin than if I had used balsa.

The Snaker
I have been working on this for a long time, but finally got it ready to go. The Snaker is an Updated Seeker Fuselage that utilizes the Viper wing. The kits include all the wood needed to complete the fuse and tail, you will need to supply your own viper wing or I believe Super T has access to foam cores or even Balsa sheeted cores. A couple mods have been instituted to my fuse that make it a stiffer in front of the tail, less sanding on the Servo hatch, and the tail is now assembled similar to the Hurrikane with several pieces of balsa utilizing different wood grains for strength. We have 8 prototype fuse kits (available in two weeks) that I would like to offer at my cost $40/ea + shipping. These will be available first come first serve, orders need to be placed through Carole at Super T RC, they should be up on the website by this weekend. I would really like to get feedback on this initial run, so we can incorporate mods that make sense into future runs. Thanks as always for your support.

RE: Vertical stab, how do I attach to composite fuselage? HELP!
Ed, the original Larson Dago Red Q40 (roughly 2000 vintage) had a wood verticle that was flush glued to the fiberglass fuse. No pins, no plates, no nothing. The verticle is also not very wide 3/16" at widest, so not much area in contact other than Epoxy / micro balloon fillets I made. This Q40 has been used and abused for about 8 years and just got a fresh paint job (not the planes fault) this past winter. I have yet to have issue with the Vertical coming loose installed this way, and as you well know this plane exceeds 185 mph. I am quite confident that a flush mounted attachment would be more than sufficient to hold that Verticle on. You are correct, that I should not have assumed the wax/mold release was removed prior to gluing.

RE: Miss Martha's Speed ?
Most of the .46 AX motors I have seen will turn an APC 10x7 right around 14k peak. The good ones, closer to 14.5k on 15% nitro fuel, baffle and head gasket removed. Looks like a nice plane, but that wing thickness is really hurting your top speed. Should be right around a 100mph though I would bet. Try the APC 10x7 and see what you think, its a good prop for that motor.

Not familiar with the plane, but it looks like the thickness of the Vert is pretty meaty, I'd sand to shape and just glue it straight to the flat part.
