RE: JR1222 with A123, which batt is bad?
Hi Zeeb- Thanks for all your inputs.. Yeah, I know the chance of a failure is pretty remote, but I was stung by a dying 5 cell NiMh pack, and I really don't want to relive that little nightmare.. I was considering the 1100mAh A123 from Fromeco.. As mentioned my concern is that if I have a 'soft' pack, I could be pulling on just one pack for the first flight.. My fear is that I wouldn't know about this condition, and would then initiate a second flight, thus putting myself at risk.. At least in my mind, if I can't find a reasonable method of determining the status of both batteries between flights, I might as well go back to a single cell and put the extra cash towards a backup airframe.. I am leaning towards running 2 milliamp counters and no switches.. There will be some discharge between flights, but it should be incredibly small.. This would allow me to see that both packs are being pulled down at a similar rate.. Recharge cycles would determine the number of flights before a recharge is required.. I should easily get three 10 minute IMAC practice flights from this power system.. At the end of the session I need to disconnect my batteries either way to prevent discharging from the monitoring circuit in the 1222..

JR1222 with A123, which batt is bad?
I am considering the following setup on a 50CC plane.. Dual 1200 mAh A123 packs JR 1222 power safe receiver. 5 8611 servos.. So, here's the deal.. I want to use low capacity dual packs to keep the weight down.. I have enough capacity to finish a flight if I have a failure in flight. However, I am not sure how I can tell if a battery has failed during flight. Does the 1222 indicate anything other than basic "voltage is there" with the battery lights? I considered adding mAh counters to each pack to ensure they are being discharged evenly, but that then requires independent switches for each pack, which adds another hardware layer prone to failure, etc, etc.. Maybe 2 Fromeco soft switches, with 2 mAh counters is the only way to go?

RE: Control throws - 85" Yak
I am new to the QQ 85", so take it with a grain of salt.. I am using degrees instead of deflection.. High rates are +/- 55 deg on the ele, low is +/- 30 deg. It sounds like 10mm is a little on the low side.. As for landing, my plane was setup by an experienced IMAC pilot, with the CG aft of the range. I am landing with throttle only.. She just floats right in all by herself..

Programming 6 servo plane with 9C
I have a 4 servo wing, 1 servo per aileron (x 2 ailerons), and 1 servo per flap (x 2 flaps). I would like to setup the following features.. Full span ailerons snap flap- switch enabled crow - adjusted by VR-D, and switch enabled Camber/reflex - on VR-E, and switch enabled (also, it's a 2 servo V-tail, but that should be a seperate mix..) Any ideas how to pull this off? What model type should I try? (I am ready to try Heli modes!) I tried the standard setups from the web page, and they didn't help any. I also tried mixing it myself, and I almost got it.. Problem was that the rest of the Crow was out of whack, when I tried to slave it off of the VR-D or the flap, the center positions would get hosed on the ailerons and tail.

How far is too far? Radio range question
Normally the RC range is not so critical, as you loose sight/orientation long before you run out of range.. So not really sure how to answer your question. One thing you should watch for is interaction between your downlink and your RC equip. I lost one plane to it, and I still have not solved it. Not sure if it is from harmonics or the switching PS..

Astro 020 "Corona" Helicopter System
BWRX-- You want to use the fixed throttle setting, and adjust the end points on the TX to give you full range. For Example.... Adjust the low end travel so that the motor starts to turn when the throttle is one click above zero (and trim is at zero). Then adjust the top end travel so that the 100% throttle LED on the ESC comes on one click below full throttle. You definitely don't want auto sensing.

ANother month or so and you will see G10 and Cf crutches coming from Matt Schumaker hit the market. They are going into Beta testing any minute now.. Adding flaps and spoilers??
Try Spoilerons.. Build it with ailerons, use two servos, and mix it in with the throttle stick.. You will also need a little elevator (down?) to compensate for the pitching.. Set the spoilers to be full throw, adjusted with the throttle stick. They will allow you to come in high, and then bring up the spoilers.. Now you will be able to descend without gaining speed. If you look at flaperons (ailerons that work as flaps too), they can be a problem because they add a huge amount of camber to the wing tips, and make tip stalls likely to happen.. In any case, if you use seperate aileron servos, you can mix it either way and see what you like. Now if you really want to get fancy, set up another mix so that you can bring both ailerons up or down about 1/4". bringing them down helps you to float and stay in lift, bringing them up may speed you up quite a bit.. If you get bored, check out the Prodij at www.f3x.com nice molded plane with spoilerons :) good luck!

Smokin'
How far into the flight were you? I wonder if you reversed that cell. That would definately do it. My understanding.. one cell in the pack has lower capacity, for whatever reason. let's say cell #3 has only 2000 mAh cap. The rest of the cells have 3300mAh cap. So you are discharging the pack, after 2000mAh of power consumed, cell #3 is not flat broke, nothing left to give. It's voltage drops to 0.0V. You keep on going with the remaining cells. They have to push their power through poor old #3. Because #3 is dead, the polarity actually reverses as you continue to run. They really don't like this very much :) I think there are two things to prevent it. #1 watch the discharge voltage cutoff, make sure it doesn't allow the pack to go below 0.9V per cell. #2 slow charge the pack every "X" number of cycles, to condition it. We are trying to make sure each cell has the change to come up to full capacity. Hope that helps :) Oh Yeah, check out Red's site at www.rcbatteryclinic.com It is the encyclopedia of batts. If in doubt, read his bio, he knows what he's talking about !!

Corona 120 main rotor shaft
Yeah, Darth meant 5/32.. Oversize would be good too, but then you may be limited on some other things later on.. EDIT- umm, I am misinformed here.. The maker of the oversized MR shafts is working to prevent any incompatibilities, so this point is not valid.. DH I still believe if I can get them cheap (50 cents a piece), and they hold up relatively well, that's the path for me.. EDIT- A very good point was made to me.. It kinda depends on the conditions the heli is subject to. I am replacing them fairly often.. if I did not have a mill, and the time, tools, etc., to do this, then it would be a very different story. DH One more for ya, if you have a drill press, and an XY table, you can get a ball mill to make the Jesus bolt slot. Sure makes it a lot easier.. If not, I have been able to cut them in about 5 minutes with a Dremel and a cutoff wheel.. EDIT- Last point, I promise.. I have zero experience with the products offered by the gentlemen that is making the oversize MR shafts. I have been talking to him, and I am hoping to change this very quickly.. Maybe after I have tried them, I can give a better opinion! DH P.P.- Thanks for very carefully bringing this to my attention :)

LMH-110 sell or can it convert to elec/CP?
Well, the conversion to electric is relatively easy and cheap, not including gyro, motor, and ESC.. Also depends on if you have batts and charger.. LMH has a kit for going to the 120, I think it's about $80.. No real kits for going to CP, I think LMH squashed that deal. if you search here, and on "other" forums, you should be able to find some sites that tell you exactly how to do it. It's won't be 3D, but it will be CP..

Corona and 9c setting ?
You should also be able to select "null" at some point on the screen, but I would have to go look at mine to be sure. You can also set it to a particular switch, and then set both switch positions to the same value, like switch up is 100% and switch down is 100%. Then it wouldn't really matter if you hit the switch..

New to RC Helicopters, Which radio would you recommend buying?
Firefly- I think it depends a lot on YOU! Do you think you will be continuing with helis? Maybe airplanes, or gliders? Lots of questions.... I love the 9C. The competitors to it are the Eclipse, and the JR (not sure which one). I think the Futaba is a better unit for how it feels in your hand, the programming available, the ease of programming, the sliders, etc, and on, and on.. The Eclipse has two things over the Futaba, Shift selection and price.. The spectra module works in the Fut. also. It's an old long debate, and there are diehards for each brand. I would recommend getting to a hobby shop to check them out yourself. I actually made a list of features the radios, and then ranked the items of the list. I may have spent more for my 9C, but I run everything off of it, and love it..

T6XHs & Corona tips?
Knimrod- I run my cutoff at 4.0V, soft cutoff, as was recommended by someone else. Not sure if I have even hit the cutoff yet.. Seems there is not enough power to hover at the end anyway.. Someone mentioned that 4 seemed real low for an 8 cell pack, (about .5V per cell?). Anyway, I have not had an issue with early cutoffs, etc.. My radio lets me know when I hit 9 minutes, so I know that even if I am in FF, I need to start paying attention to the battery.. Spiro- I wish I could take credit for how to set the throttle range. Someone else helped me with that, just passing it along :) I think it was Hovertime...

T6XHs & Corona tips?
Knimrod- I noticed you and Spiro were discussing (among other things) the ESC settings.. One thing I like to do to the CC Phoenix controllers, is to place the throttle mode to Fixed (Also recommended by CC for heli use). If you are using Fixed throttle, you will need to setup the servo throw for the throttle channel (some call it ATV, or EPA). What was suggested to me, and seems wo work real well... Disconnect the motor from the drive train so it can spin, but not spin the blades.. Arm the ESC, and set the throttle stick one click above zero. Adjust the throttle ATV down until the motor begins to spin. Then adjust back up until it stops. Then put the stick one or two clicks below 100%, and adjust ATV until the LED on the ESC turns off. When you are done, the motor should start to spin with the first click off of zero, and full throttle will be 1 or 2 clicks below full stick.

Carona 120 throttle response
DrH- I think that should do it for you. I believe I am running at about 80% on the upper and lower ATV, so your description of 140% sounds like it would do as you described.. BTW- the small rotation in the opposite direction is normal. The hard startup is not. I can ramp mine up slowly without the tail moving at all.
