RE: DX6 shut off in flight
Small update. The new DX6 has one model memory that wont bind. Also turns out the radio this thread was started for was his 2nd DX6. The first one lost throttle function. So after 3 bad ones I convinced him to upgrade. He bought a JR 9503 and could not be happier. The latest DX6 was sent in for repair as Horizon would not let him pay the difference on the upgrade. I know his DX6 issues are A-typical, but this is a terrible reflection on that product. When the 3rd one gets shipped back to him, you will see it in the marketplace or as a boat anchor. david

RE: smoke lines????
The smoke is not bad on it, but the heat is. It may melt at the muffler. I used it on a glow motor years ago, and had to make a 3" copper extension off of the muffler to keep the temp down. David

RE: Mounting Ailerons Servo
Once the brass is through the rubber, it will hold the rubber in place, Most common mistake guys make is putting the flange on the brass on top of the servo. The flange of the brass should be on the wooded mounting surface. david

RE: OS 120 AX Problem ?
I am using the stock OS muffler with the 90 degree adapter. Performance wise, it is great with no issues. Fitting it in a cowl is another story. It will hang down more than an aftermarket Pitts style muffler. The other two issues, the pressure nipple now points straight at the webbing of the motor mount with almost no clearance, and to tighten the thing I have to go through the cooling holes in the front of the cowl. The muffler and cowl have to be removed as a unit. Some planes will no doubt have more clearance. This is on a GB ULT and the lower cowl cuts back in a hurry. david

RE: need help picking a engine
It's not hard to make your own smoke muffler. Our good friend Minn Flyer left this behind. http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=455 David BTW, Have you thought about a DLE 20? gas engines have higher exhaust temps and smoke better.

RE: Propellers
I would make it out of wood also. Carbon Fibre might be lighter and stronger, but a nice wood prop will be safer and you could CNC it yourself. Do you know the engine that will be used? If so there are many guys here that have flown that engine and can steer you in the right direction. It is also possible on a wood prop to buy one that is bigger than you need and custom cut the tips to your specs. The hardest way would be to CNC a plug , use it to make a mold , than make your own CF version. This would also be the most dangerous way!!! It's no fun when a prop comes apart. David

RE: Twist 60 knife edge?
The Twist airframes are not good at knife edge. The tail is too short. An increase in rudder size will help, but KE is just not a Twist strong suit. I know someone is going to tell me I am wrong and their Twist will KE all day long. Good for you, but I stand by the above.[:)] david

RE: DLE 55-RA
I removed the 2 screws, reed and metal plate. Then layed a piece of 400 grit paper on a sheet of glass I keep on my workbench( anything perfectly flat would work). I hung the back part of the block over the edge of the glass then slowly slid the reed block back and forth on the sand paper. I took my time went easy, but honestly it was not hard to do. The matterial the reed block is made from is similar to what a MA prop is made from. Then just cleaned and reassembled. David

RE: DLE 55-RA
Mike, you might pull the carb and check the reed block. If the leaning does not work anyway. Below is a pic of the reed block from my DLE 30. You can see many air gaps around the reed. It was the same on both sides. My issue was with pulling fuel to start. But after I smoothed both sides of the block it did have more power. Sorry I don't have tach reading, but that was not my issue. David

RE: Are 2 Batteries worth it?
One better battery would be my suggestion. This one http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNRH6&P=ML is $20. You can get the 5 cell 6.0v for $25. david

RE: DX6 shut off in flight
The tech at Horizon said the issue was a faulty voltage regulator. They are sending him a new TX and gave him credit for the air frame. They would have replaced the plane, but it is not current. All in all great customer care. I would like to see him upgrade to a better unit with a battery pack, but it's not my money. david

RE: What is a Good Nighttime LED 3D flyer - Foamy or Balsa Extra 300 3D ?
Gizmo, you should look at the newer light kits. DWFoamies has some that go on the wing tips and shine toward the plane. Outlining the plane is not the best way to do it IMHO. I have his Juka with the SFG light kits. I have flown 2 Jukas but have not tried the lights as of yet. If you decide to go foam, he does make an Extra 300 and a Yak in several sizes. The LEDs I am talking about are light weight, use the same battery as the ESC, have two brightness settings, and are a snap to install. Might be worth a look for you. Are you wanting to night fly indoors or out? David

RE: Old school funtana 90
Mizm1220, Realize on the weight, no two planes are the same. Next time you are at the hobby shop. Pick up 5 sticks of the same size balsa. Even without a scale you will have an easy time picking out the lightest and heaviest of the 5. It's the same issue with CG. It's common to read about two guys with the same plane and same engine having much different result when balancing the plane. One plane will be dead on and the next be nose heavy. One plane can also go down a line with a a lot of glue, and the next be thin on glue. It's the nature of mass production. It should also be said, the lightest and straightest does not always fly the best.[:D] David

RE: Old school funtana 90
The very first versions of these had issues with AILE flutter. Look at your aile servo mount. Is there a rib next to each side of the mount? The 1st version had a rib on one side of the mount and 1/4" square stick running to the next rib which was about 3" over. If your wing is V1. I would open it up and reinforce the area a little. David

RE: DLE 55-RA
With out re hijacking this thread. It should be noted DA runs and tunes every engine before it is shipped. This cost money. The cosmetics of the engine are better. This cost money. The stock spark plug can be used for more than a paper weight. This cost money. Their service is second to none. This cost money. When I have to save for almost a year to put a big plane together a few hundred dollars more to buy the best is worth it. At least to me. Insecurity has nothing to do with it. David

RE: DLE 55-RA
As a DA-60 owner, I spent the extra money for a few reasons. 1) I knew the DA was going to be a quality piece and their warranty and service were excellent. 2) I have a hunch that 3,4 or 5 years from now the DA will still be going strong. The DLE might be also, but the odds have to be better with the DA. 3) I have heard that DLE has more failures in the ignition boxes. 4) I always wanted a DA engine on a AW airframe. My reasons may not hold water with everyone, but such is life. I can say without a doubt the DA is a power house. I am 14 flights into it. It's hard to hover the 17.5 pound Extra 300 because it wants to climb with every touch of the throttle. Sunday when I was flying it one of the guys commented it was still gaining speed going straight up @ about 500'. Don't know if that's true but verticle is VERY strong. So while I could have saved a few hundred with the DLE. I am glad I went with the DA. David

RE: DX6 shut off in flight
Talked to the owner of the LHS where the radio was bought. Horizon wants it back so we may never know what it was. If he gets a report back from them I will post it. I did not pull any of the AA cells, but they looked clean. I expected to see a battery pack when I opened the cover. The cells did day Spektrum on them, so I know he did not replace them with junk from the dollar store. I also found out there was a problem early in the day. Before the first flight, 2 of the channels had reversed themselves. He had to switch that before he could fly. Had it been me, I am not sure I would have flown with it. He did however get 3 good flights before it went in. Plus one flight on a different model using the same TX. So maybe time will tell. I will post info as I get it. Thanks guys, David

RE: DX6 shut off in flight
Jim, would that make it show over 5 volts when I turned it back on and then shut it's self off again? Maybe as soon as it started transmitting the load shut it down again?? There was some discussion at the field about the load on the TX, But the TX should be under the same load no matter the stick movement by my way of thinking. David

DX6 shut off in flight
Saw this happen to a friend yesterday. I've never had a spectum radio but have been flying 25+ years. The plane of course went straight in. He carried the radio over to me. I shut it off and turned it back on. It beeped twice and shut off. It was showing 5.2 volts. Any ideas?? This model uses 5 AA cells in the back of the TX and not a pack. Will the DX6 shut off like that if the batteries are weak? Please refrain from a radio brand debate. That wont help him decide what to do. Thanks, david

RE: Prop Mounting Bolts
I don't have anything that will measure inch/pounds. So I just snug them to the point they stay tight. If you crush the washer into the prop, that is too much. All they are doing is holding the prop to the washer. They are not keeping it from turning in the same way a single nut does. david

RE: 4 Stroke Throttle Linkage
I have not used the Du-bro. But it's pretty easy to screw and extra servo arm in the mount ahead of the throttle. Then run your rod to it, and a second rod back the carb. There is no flex in this set up either. David
