Here's a few pics of one. This is on a Saito 1.80. Many guys just use the fuel line to support them, and get them as close to the carb as possible. David

RE: Hangar 9 Funtana 40
Glad to hear you have it sorted out. Just dont move the CG that much at one time. There is a sweet spot for you in the 5.5"-6.5" range. Move it up a 1/4" at a time till you find it. Landing these things with a aft CG is a controlled crash. Move the CG until it lands better and fly it there. David

Good job Tom!!! I am going to miss this thread. Not that I need to tell you, but there are others reading this. Don't rely on the glide ability if she ever goes dead stick. It wont tip stall in, but will pancake with a 45 degree glide path. I am equally impressed with my 1.20AX. It will start with a back flip, idle all day long, and makes tons of smooth power. I am running a 17x6APC on mine. You might try one when you get to hovering it. Looking forward to some video. David

The Funtana is pretty light. Try entering the flat spin from a blender. This will tell you if it's an inertia issue or a set up issue. David

RE: Good looking covering scheme
These are profile ARFs I recovered. I like straight lines that are easy to see. Both of these are easy to tell top from bottom and look good in the air. Both of these are a mix of Ultra and Mono cote. Since the lines are straight and there are no big overlaps the windex method was not needed. Mixing the transparent yellow with the solid yellow was a little tricky. The transparent shrinks faster. The checkerboard is also a pain. Getting the lines straight from one half to the other is tough. David
ORIGINAL: ChuckW I wonder why GP shows plans for the .40 and .60 kit but not the .90? I had the plans and wood for the .90/1.20 and planned to built it but never got around to it. I ended up giving the stuff away.
Could be because the 90/120 is so different. The 40-60 and even the 20 are all built about the same. The 90/120 is the same in the wing, but the tail feathers and both decks are totally different. I could build two 60s in the time it takes to build a 90/120. David

Of those two props, I would use the shorter one. The throttle response should be better for 3D. I would personally not use either one and go to a 15x4W. But that may just be me. david

RE: Super Sportster .60
It would be a good build for him to help on. There is a LOT of sanding to be done on the nose area. This would keep the little man busy for quite some time. My only concerne is, it's a lot like the Four Star. It looks and flys a lot the same. Maybe you should think about a Tiger 60. It also an easy build and would be a little different. Don't get me wrong. the SS is one of my favorite all time planes. I hade one for years with a COMO 60. I still have a 90/120 size SS with a 90. The tiger would just be different. David

RE: Goldberg Ultimate Build 60 size by twn
Tom, I cant give you the measurement in inches. I start them about 3" and work it back. I never check the CG again. I just tinker with it back and forth until I hit the happy median. There are three things I look for when it gets to tail heavy. One is the pull in KE flight I already mentioned. I think it is toward the belly but I really cant recall as I sit here. Second thing I try is a fast aile roll. When they start to get tail heavy the roll will not instantly stop. It will waffle around a little when you let off the aile. An Ult ,as you know, should stop the instant the aile throw is released. Third thing is a flat spin. I go up and do a stall turn, as soon as the tail gets higher than the nose I push full down and opposite aile. It should go into a flat attitude in 1 spin, and stay there. When they get tail heavy the nose will pitch up and the spin will start to wobble, if that makes sense. As far as it slowing down more. Not that I have seen. They all drop with out power and should be landed a tick or two over idle. I should also mention. Even a perfectly balanced GB will pull a little in KE flight. I mix it out on my radio using the low rate rudder switch. It's not much though, I think 5% one way and 3% the other. The aile mix is a little less. 2 or 3% one way or the other. I can be flown in easy enough, but for those long low KE passes it is a little smoother. David

Sachs 4.2 Prop?
Helping a friend with a 1/3 scale Cub. He has a 4.2 Sachs that has electronic ignition. He was told this would be marginal power on the big Cub (book calls for 80cc and up) and given a big range of recomendations on props. Anywhere from a 26x8 to a 22x10. So what do we need to try first? The field is 2,000' ASL and most of the flying will be in the summer. We do have 10-15 mph winds most of the time. David

RE: Goldberg Ultimate Build 60 size by twn
I would fly it at 3-1/8" no problem. the plane is not real CG sensitive. If it pulls hard in a knife edge you may want to ease it forward. I balance mine inverted with my fingers on the top of the bottom wing. This gets it close and that is all that is needed on a GB Ult. If you want to know exactly where it is, get a plumb bob and do the pendulum method. BTW, I have flown 20 or so GB Ult's over the years. Most of them trim out with a little up elev in them. Can't tell you why, they just do. David

Tom, to be clear with you. I do drill out the clunk on some, but the drilling I mentioned in the earlier post was to drill out the stopper. Then buy the next size up brass tube to go through the stopper. I only drill the carb side and leave the stock size in the pressure side. David

I put a zip tie on the clunk end and on the carb. On the copper line, I put the tip of a small screwdriver in the end and work it around in a circle pattern. This will put just a little flare on the end of the copper. May be over kill, I like to think of it as piece of mind. David

Tom, my 120AX will go vertical all day long. I am however using the stock muffler with 90 degree adapter. I have also been hovering it some. Comparing it to my other planes, the hovering is more likely to cause a lean run than the full throttle vertical. Either way the 120 has not given me any trouble. If you are worried, go up a size on your fuel tubing. You can drill out your tank stopper and go up one size on the brass. This will not increase the pressure but increase the volume. This is almost required on big 2 strokes like a ST 3250. just a thought, David

RE: elevator setup
I always start level and then trim it in flight. If you start with up and the plane needs down, it just take longer to get right. Besides, if a plane needs quit a bit of up to fly straight and level I am going to change the CG or the thrust to fix it anyway. david

RE: Breakin of my new Saito 125
The vibration is from the rich setting. It will get better after a long break in on the airframe and some leaner settings ,in time. The castor is turning the mufflers black. Using full synthetic will stop this. But at what cost? I think the castor helps with engine life. Some will disagree, but I would rather have the black muffler. David

I have to back Tom on the cabane issue. At least partially, I have only twisted the alum once, but have ripped them out of the mounts a few times doing a blender. Water falls and Walls my put a lot of Gs on the airframe, but a Blender with an Ult is a blurr. The plane twists around so fast you can't tell what it is doing. I rarely do them now with an Ult for this reason. When I do one on request I keep the airspeed down and use low rate rudder. David

RE: Sig SU-31 Sukhoi ARF
I use a lot of 3305s. These are metal gear,99oz on 4.8/130oz on 6.0v and cost about $35. These are not real precise and the gear set cost $5 less than a new servo. But I really like them. They center well are very strong and have only lost one out of 20 in the last several years. They do get a litle slop in them, but I think all metal gear servos get more play than the plastic. David

RE: Sig SU-31 Sukhoi ARF
I have not done it for smoke. This is my first smoke system. I have done it for fuel. The tanks are plumbed in series. For glow fuel, the exhaust line goes to tank one. The carb line from tank one goes to the exhaust line for tank two. Then the carb line from tank two goes to the carb. It should work the same for a smoke system. The vent line would be the only difference. I think this way I can use two shorter tanks for clearence. I have not really gotten into it that deep, but that's the plan. david
