RE: Flying the SIG Riser
Sig airplanes are just fantastic to build and fly! I had a Riser 100" way back (around 1992) when I was learning to fly. It was equipped with an Enya .15 engine on the nose and had an aluminum landing gear initially. This was a great way to learn powered flight (before moving on to a 4 channel Super stick). It allowed practice of many touch and goes, and if you happened into a thermal could power back to idle and soar with the birds. A while after that I converted it to a pure glider and it had many happy flight until I eventually sold it (not voluntarily, I moved countries). I plan on buying and building another kit in the future, mounting a brushless outrunner on the nose and putting a landing gear on. It is pure relaxation, and inspiring doing touch and goes all day! RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
That's real pretty Terry, I love the razorback version! Gonna follow this thread, I love watching birds go together (almost as good as building one myself!)
ORIGINAL: Terry Bolin I got a few flights on mine now and JUST LOVE IT! Great kit and great plane! Mine balanced out perfect with the Thunder Tiger 91 but it needed a little nose weight when I switched to the Magnum 91...Mine came out 9lbs 3 ounces and has no bad habits! youre gonna love it! Good luck T
RE: Four Star 60 dies on maiden day.
Interesting that the engine revved up and down Kmot. With some electric airplanes (equipped with speed controls) this is usually a sign that the battery voltage is getting low or close to the cut off point. Possibly that receiver has some built in circuitry to detect voltage and fluctuate the throttle as an indicator? If the battery was old and not cycled properly it could have gone below that point hence the brownout. Just a thought.... Nice that Sig have a fuse kit available, they are my favorite kit manufacturer! If you ever think of building another kit from them consider the Astro Hog (build with 1/2 dyhedral), its a sweet and relaxing flyer and fun to build! Dave
ORIGINAL: Kmot The engine actually revved up, went to idle, revved up again, went to idle again, and then the plane nosed down steeper and went into the ground. The Rx was blinking the next day, indicating a brown out. Could it be the battery voltage dipped low, came back up, dipped low, came back up, and then finally dipped low and stayed low? All within a second or two? We will never know the answer. As for the battery, I tested it with an Expanded Scale Voltmeter by Craft-Air, which is an old skool instrument that applies a 'typical' 4 servo load to the battery. While that was attached, I worked three servos back and forth to full travel for five minutes observing the voltage on my VOM and could not get the battery voltage to drop more than 1/10th volt. RE: Four Star 60 dies on maiden day.
Kmot, I noticed in one of your previous posts that you velcro'd the receiver in place but no mention of padding around it? If so then vibration could be the cause of the brownout .... Brand name does not necessarily assure a good receiver. I had a brand new multiplex 9CH receiver (72Mhz) which was on its 5th or so flight in my 50 size helicopter completely die (it was well padded and mounted) on me. Luckily I was hovering and it only fell a few feet but it was a bugger to cut the motor with the blades spinning fast just above arm and head (in hindsight should have just let it run out of gas). Tested the receiver afterwards with different battery etc and totally dead. Sent back to Hitec for replacement and never found out what failed internally. So far have had 0 problems with JR transmitter and Spektrum receivers, but mileage can vary with any technology/brand. I think the idea of testing any equipment in an old hobo airplane is great (or even a parkflyer) before using in a new one. Sorry about your crash, I followed your build thread and you did a great job on the build! Hopefully you will be up in the air again soon. Keep us updated. Oh, and I believe you are correct about the satellite receivers, they enhance the angle for the signal to be received and as far as I know do not extend the range. Dave

RE: *** Warbirds Over Texas 2011. RCU Onsite Coverage ***
Looks like a great show, wish I had heard about it sooner and I would have come up from Bedford to check it out! That B-26 looks amazing, love the weathering detailing. An RC airplane is a toy, but guess what, many of the planes we model after are also toys. Anything used for leisure can be considered a toy as it has no practicality or use beyond providing us enjoyment. Reno air races, toy airplanes. Can't wait to get my Tundra cub 'toy' someday :-) Or that toy Ferrari. Get my point, huh huh?? All in fun guys, not trying to argue or offend anybody. Congrats to the organizers, looks a worthy yearly event.

Rrr, why can't I delete this post!!!
Sorry guys, I posted something here but I found the answer. Now I can't delete this post. Could a moderator please do it for me, I think I had this problem a while back where RC universe wont let me delete posts. Thanks!

For you guys that have a Super Hots or Hots II, can you tell me if there is any right thrust or down thrust built into the firewall? Its been a while and can't remember if mine had any offset. Thanks!

RE: HOTS???
Started drawing up the fuse for the Hots-B (brushless) today. Just got the outline done, now I need to draw up all the bulkheads and figure out how much of the sides and panels to cutout for shedding some weight. I dont want to shave off too much weight as the original Hots was pretty heavy and had good inertia/wind penetration. I am not using this for 3D but want a good amount of power to weight ratio. This should be a nice, cheap project. Here are 2 pictures of progress (can you tell I am excited[:D]), 1 of the Yak wing which will be mated to the fuse in 2 pieces:

RE: HOTS???
Its really nice to see some Hots airplanes on here. I had a midwest Hots II in the 90's that I flew in Cape town South Africa. The thing was super fast (had a Super tiger 46 in it) and did lovely knife edges and rolls. Lost a good portion of it in a midair with a much larger airplane, it lost a third of the wing, sheared a good portion of the hoz stab and went into a flat spin. I managed to recover and land it, but I did not feel like rebuilding it so gave it away to a friend. Fast forward to this year and I have some 40" Yak 54 wings that I am going to mate to a scratch built Hots fuse/tail. I am probably going to stretch it to give a longer tail moment and a more patternship design and possibly a see-through cockpit instead of a black decal. I will be designing it around an Axi 2808/24 with 3 cell Lipo. Will get started on the plans once I finish final exams next week. Will post pics on here once I have something substantial. Dave

What are JR thinking? That thing is hideous, looks like a Futaba with all the cheap silver and big blue light. Talk about going gimicky ... I will stick with the 9303

RE: White Monokote and Sig
You are not the only one with Ultracote problems. I have had two ARF's (Taylorcraft 450/Funtana 40) with it on and the stuff just naturally wrinkles very badly. I apply the rec temps for stretching, and the next day new wrinkles appear. I admit that I have not used Monokote for a few years but it always treated me well and only occasionally needed to be tightened up. Hmmm, maybe its time to go back to the good ole days of silk and dope[:D]
ORIGINAL: davidgeorge212
ORIGINAL: tony0707 HI I THINK the ONE guy who is complaining about ULTRA COAT must be working for MONOCOAT
LOL, no I dont work for monokote! I am not one usually to raise complaints about products if they are bad but no other type of covering has given me the kind of fits ultracote has. If you want to hear more specific complaints I had with using ultracote just ask I can list quite a few more. I only wish I knew where you guys were buying your ultacote because maybe it was only bad at my local hobby shop. David
