RE: Gas engine equivalent to OS 160 2 stroke?
Racer, I think to get the comparable power, you need a light weight 35 to 40cc gaser. My rule of thumb is that the gaser should have about 50% more displacement then the glow engine. The Brison is on the heavy side with its Sach cylinder etc. Besides a cub has a short nose and liftinf air foil. Weight shouldn't be an issue, since it will be hanging on the prop most of the time. RE: What engine is this?
smooreace, Set the needles at about 1.5 to 1.75 turns open. First close them gently against the seats then open them, counting the turns. As long as the carb diaphram is in good shape and the fuel circuit isn't coughed, it should pump fuel. Dave

Foamcut, I haven't fooled with the engines for a while. Teh very long reach special spark would make it very difficult to make a 10mm adapter. I thing EI would be the best ignition solution for weight savings. It would fire the plug every time. You will get ignition everyother revolution. Dave

RE: What size conversion engine for a Dynaflite SE5a?
Jim, The clutch drum is held on by a screw going into the end of the crank stud. Stick a allen wrench in the end of the drum where the flex shaft is normally inserted. Remove the allen screw and the drum wll slip off. Then clamp the flywheel in a vise and turn off the clutch shoe assembly. I beleive that it is left hand thread. You can reduce the engine weight and size by converting it ti gas/glow ignition. This is discussed else where in the conversion forum. Good luck. Dave

RE: What size conversion engine for a Dynaflite SE5a?
Jim, Your plane would work well with a 25 to 32cc trimmer conversion, swinging a 16 to 18 inch prop. A Ryobi 31 would fit completly inside the cowl and use a 18" prop. A Homelite 25cc would be a good choice also, but the carb would stick out of the side of the cowl. This might make adjustment easier. The The four pound weight of a flywheel equiped engine would help balance the plane, since the nose is short. The Clark Y, flat bottomed airfoil will carry the extra weight fine. Dave

RE: Brison 5.8 best performance
8A36, Be sure that you baffle the cowl, so that all of the air is forced to go throuh the fins. Make sure that the cowl exit area is 1.5 times the inlet at the fins and the open cowl flaps should help draw out the air also. This should solve the overheating issues. Also as mentioned above, use a 24x12 or 26x10 prop and it should get close to 6,500 rpm. The flywheel action of the larger balanced prop sould help reduce vibration. Timing and mounting need to be good as well. Good luck. Dave PS: The typical carb has a spring on the throttle shaft which prevents vibration from allowing thr throttle to cruve the throttle bore. Check for this.

Spiffy, It is a needle bearing, reed valve engine, made between 1974 and 1984. It should run ok. It may need a thrust bearing added to the crank. I would start with an 18x8 prop. RE: 90* 77cc gasser
Paul, If you side mount the engine it will be OK. You should add somr lead the tip oppisite the cylinder. It won't take much to balance the plane. Just a small sinker or solder epoxied inside the tip. It will only take a small fraction of the weight of the cylinder. The idea of a elbow manifold will work, but many have found this to be difficult to get right. Post some pictures,if you can. What brand saw did it come out of? Dave

RE: Solo 4 Blade prop on a Brison 4.2?
Mustang, That sounds like way too much prop for a 69cc engine to me. You would have to deduce the pitch to 24x8 to get decent RPM. The Jug had a three bladed prop in the early years with less area. They went to the wide four bladed prop later to get improved climb with the heavy airframe. I think that a three blade 24x8 would be good. Good luck. Dave

Commander, The WT-499 is just a Walbro pumper with larger passages for glow fuel and has an 11mm venturi. You can use a standard Walbro 11mm carb for gas glow. The 499 may run a little rich if you can't close the needles enough. The 499 would be nice to have around for experimenting. Dave

RE: Need Help - Brison 3.2 Smoke Tap
Rich, It doesn't sound like you are very comfortable disasembling engines. If you do it yourself, you will have to do some disassembly. The fitting is usually installed in either the side or rear of the case. The cylinder must be pulled to do this, because you must place some material inside the case to catch the filings from drilling and tapping the hole. Ralph at RC Ignitions may be able to help. Give Ralph a call. Dave PS Give the engine another good look. Some Brisons come tapped for smoke from the factory. The hole would have a screw in it, maybe on the side under the exhust port.

RE: How to convert Glow engine to Ignition gas engine
Borna, This question should be on the engine conversion forum. It is doable, but you will need to use the same amount of oil that is used with a glow engine operation. This is because of the bronze rod bearings. Gas engines usually have needle bearing con rods. This allows lower oil content in the fuel. A weedeater size carb will be needed. These have about a 7mm venturi. the walbro versions have 20 cast into the carb inlet. For ignition you can use a electronic unit from any nuber of sources or run it on gas/glow fuel mix with a 4 stroke glow plug. 1/4x32 spark plugs cost about $16. All of this is found in the engine conversion forum with a simple search. Good luck. Dave http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_92/tt.htm

Tiny, If you bought the parts and did the assemble yourself, it will be much cheaper. If you have someone else do it, they will charge you for parts and time. Ken Lamert and Brillelli have done these in the past. Wacker engines also has all of the parts and kits for some. They are on the net also. Dave

RE: Alternative fuels for glow engines
y84, You can run glow engines on a mix of gas, methanol and oil. You will need to use the same oil content and install a Walbro type gas carb for best performance. Use a hot 4C plug for reliable idle. Spark ignition can be add also if desired. CH Ignitions has kits and parts fot the large Super Tiger engines. This is best done on the large engines where ful savings are greater and required oil content is lower. Here is the gas/glow link. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1267448/tm.htm Dave

RE: 100 cc plus engines?
Hi Charlie, I did some measuring of the Hawk and found that the distance is 7.5 inches from the back of the prop to the firewall on a quarter scale model or 30 inches on full scale. This is enough room for any of the big twins. You just have to use the correct lenght standoffs to position the prop properly. The only except is the big ZDZ rotary valve twins, which would require a large well or hole in the fire wall for the carb. Engine weight would be helpful, due to the short nose ahead of the CG. It should balance between the main axel and the back of the tire. Here is the ZDZ demension chart link. http://www.rcshowcase.com/html/dimensions.html The cowl diameter is around 17 inches which even will fit a ZDZ 210 at 15.5 inches wide and 7.6 inches long. Dave

RE: 6400 rpms on a homie
k18fr, The "28" Walbro has an 11mm venturi and usually has a 5/8ths inch throttle bore, which is larger then the stock 1/2' hole in the insulator. The next step after the 11mm carb would be to bore out the insulator to 5/8ths inch and add an external pulse hose to drive the carb pump. Dave
