RE: Club 40 Pylon Race at WAAM in Tuscaloosa Aug 4th, 2012
did someone ever state how many heats and rounds were flown during the tuscaloosa race. I didnt stick around to the end, so how many races did you end up flying?

Ya, I have a 30 but dont know if I could wait for another one. I would probably just go with a DA 50 or DA60.

well, at least a new thread didnt get started for this round of mono bashing. Its more like a continuation of an older one.[:)] I still think it would be great if they just made this one a sticky at the top of the page for easy access for the newcommers [:D][:)][:D]

I built mine as a mono plane though. I built mine like the original plans that had just one wing on the bottom. That is the prop I am using as well. A 16x6 master airscrew.

RE: Golden Era 60 Bipe
Hey glow start, What prop are you running on your saito 1.20? Do you know about how much your golden era weighs? I just finished mine which only has the bottom wing and I put a saito 1.25 on it. I had to add quite a bit of nose weight on top of that just to get it to balance. I was kind of surprised to find out that my golden era is not all that fast with a 1.25 on it. In fact it flies at a rather moderate speed considering how much it is "technically" overpowered. I have been keeping my stick at around 3/4 throttle for a cruise speed and full throttle for vertical. It isint underpowered by any means but it just doesnt seem like it is as fast as the way yours sounds. David

RE: Golden Era 60
Well, I guess its almost been a year ago since I last worked on my Golden Era .60. I have since just finished it up last weekend and flew it. I now have around 5 flights on it so far and I am loving it. My plane is probably a little heavier than most because I fabriced it and painted it. I ended up using my Saito 1.25 for power. I was a little surprised to find out the saito 125 didnt pull it as fast as I was originally thinking. I thought this plane would be super fast but in reality it flies at a rather moderate speed around 3/4 throttle. I am running a 16x6 master airscrew for my prop. I did take a few pictures of it but I will have to post them later. David

I built a hammer .20 not too long ago and put a saito .40 four stroke on it. It still is a really good flying little plane. David

RE: Scaling up a plane to fit a specific motor size?
well, maybe I should keep the scale where its at and just go with something in the 50cc engine range. Im not real particular about what size it is or what motor I put on it. I just thought it might be neat to build a larger version of this plane.

RE: Scaling up a plane to fit a specific motor size?
I was sort of comparing wing areas with my stick which is how I came up with my span. My big stik has a wing area of about 1600 square inches. The plans that I sized and are working from have about a 1400 square inch wing area. I might try to resize the plans and get the area a little closer to 1600 sq in. thanks, David

RE: Scaling up a plane to fit a specific motor size?
I was sort of going by area which is how I was getting my wingspan. My stik is about 1600 square inches and the the plans that I sized would put my Skylarks wing area at around 1400 square inches. Should I try and increase the scale just a little more? Thanks, David

RE: Scaling up a plane to fit a specific motor size?
I imported the original plans into autocad and I have sorta been trying to scale them to what I think will work for a 30cc. I have been copying a lot of the original design but I am also emplementing some different design and construction features for a larger scale model. The wingspan I measured is about 87" in this drawing. This is only from one night of working on this drawing, I imagine it will get quite a few more refinements in the days to come. David

Scaling up a plane to fit a specific motor size?
I had a skylark 56 and have a skylark 70. I started thinking it might be neat to build a little bit larger version of this plane. Right now I am thinking about going up to the 30cc range. One of my questions is, Is there any kind of formula to scale up a plane to fit a specific engine range? The skylark 70 has around a 70.5" wingspan and I have an O.S. .75 ax on it. I have been messing around in autocad with scaling the plans. I currently have the plans scaled up to approximately an 88" wingspan. The chord is about 16". The wing area would be about 1400 square inches. I dont know if this scale is good or not for a 30cc. I was just comparing it to my great planes giant stik specs which are right in the same area as well. What are your thoughts? David
ORIGINAL: Oldbob So, the race starts on the back side of the course going right to left! Then the pylon on the left is “pylon one and the one on the right is “pylon two? Also the race ends on the back side of the course going right to left? Our races start and end on the front side of the race course going left to right. This will be a little bigger learning curve then I expected but no big deal; with August 4 two months away this should be enough time for us Long-Hones to practice and learn this format. Looks like fun. Bob
I at one time started drawing a diagram of our field and how we do the flying starts. I am trying to find the better drawing I did but for now here is this one.

That is completely normal. The last DA engine I bought was a 100L directly from Desert Aircraft. They shipped it in a generic white box and it was just plastic wrapped on the inside. No name brand manufacturers packaging at all.

wow, I didnt think our newsletter traveled much further outside our club but I guess it did. I was the one who took that first picture. I just got back from Joe Nall a day ago. I tell you what, the cnc machining and finish work on this engine was absolutely gorgeous. It almost didnt even matter not getting to hear it run, I was just loving the way this engine looked and felt. Dont get me wrong, I still would have loved to hear it run. David

RE: Plans coversion from dwg to pdf
Do you have autocad or do you just have your plans in .dwg format? If you do have autocad, you can convert your plans using that program just by plottining it to a file instead of your printer. Other than that, I would say check with a local print shop. I have a local store that will convert any type of file into whatever format I want.
