RE: Used AutoCad
Hi I have just downloaded DraftSight and indeed it seems to run very similar to AutoCAD. Just one problem (so far) I am running on Windows XP and was warned during the installation process that the graphics driver (6-14-10-4943) was unstable. The program has indeed crashed twice both times while zooming. Anybody got any suggestions?

RE: Used AutoCad
I used autoCAD about ten years ago at work, and loved it. I would love to have it at home but can't justify the expense, about $1000.00 for acad lite. I have heard that DraftSite is good and is functionally similar to AutoCAD but last time I heard there was a problem with printing out, anyone heard anything about this?

RE: Painting with rustoleum
I had been told that Rustoleum was fuel proof, and I believe most of them are. However I painted a plane with "silver Rustoleum" and it went gummy on me first time I got fuel on it. I'd say be careful with metalic colors.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
A while ago I started to build a 1/6 scale spitfire which I intended to finish like the prototype K 5054. To accomplish this I have an almost complete set of Vickers-Supermarine plans of an actual Mk I spitfire. I have been somewhat discouraged however by people who have told me that a Mk I model will not fly well because of its short nose and small tailplane (horizontal stab) area. It has been suggested that I lengthen the nose and increase the tailplane area, but then of course its not scale any more. Does anyone have any input (solution) on this?

RE: Minimum power for a 9# plane
I recently assembled a "Great Planes Giant Big Stick" and the comment in there instruction manual is that it is better to have the plane slightly overpowered than under powered (you don't have to have the throttle wide open). I mention this as it slightly surprised me usually manufacturers recommend a slightly smaller engine I believe.

RE: Starter for gas engine
I too am a newbi to gas engines and I was recently advised that a gas engine will start by hand with the throttle set at idle. I tried and indeed it does. I was also told that reving the engine with the plane only restrained by the tail was dangerous as the more powerful gas engines were capable of pulling the tail right off the plane. Another nearby modeler confirmed that this had indeed happened to him only a couple of weeks earlier and he had only been saved from injury by the push rods holding the plane back. The engine I have by the way is a DLE30.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
I am just starting a 1/6 scale (72" WS) spit. I am building from scratch using some drawings of an actual Mk I spit I got from a guy in N.Z. I plan on finishing it per the K 5054 prototype. I have a DLE 30 I intend using but I may change my mind as the build progresses. I am building as close to exact scale as I possibly can, does anyone see any problem with this as I notice a lot of "scale" spits have the moment arm and tailplane area increased.

RE: Brian Taylor Spitfire Build MK1a - BUild Thread
Hi. Did either of you two gents (or anyone else) follow up on the Brian Taylor Spit. Mk 1a any further? I am thinking of building a model of the prototype K 5054 and this would be a good start I think. As the earlier marks were shorter in the nose would this result in a lot of up front ballast?

RE: RCGF Engines
I'm not sure if this is the place for this question, but I'll ask it anyway and hope I don't upset anyone. I am considering buying a 63" WS P47 which has a RCGF engine in it, from the picture it appears to be a 20. I understand they came in side carb and rear carb versions, what are the pros and cons of each? also did they all come with electronic ignition? Plus anything else I should be looking for. The person selling this knows nothing of our hobby as she is just disposing of her grandfather's estate. I live close enough to the seller to pick it up so I will not be purchasing sight unseen. I wish to be fair to this person particularly with regard to her loss, but at the same time I don't want to buy a pig in a poke. Thank you.

RE: What would a gas engine be compared to a glow
I just assembled a Great Planes Giant Big Stick, it calls for an OS 180 2 stroke, I installed a DLE 30, it seems to be about right. Based on that I'd say that an OS 120 2 stroke was about equivalent to a DLE 20 and an OS 180 2 stroke equivalent to a DLE 30. Hope this helps.

Piper Pawnee
I have just bought a N.I.B. Hanger 9 Piper Pawnee from someone who was moving. The plane is 80" wingspan and calls for a 40-52 size engine. This seems somewhat inadequate to me, has anybody any experience with this plane? I have available an OS 46, an OS 55ax, and an Evolution 61. Which should I use?

RE: NEW DLE30!
I bought a couple of 18x10 McMaster props they seemed to work fine and the man at McMaster didn't have a problem with my drilling for the four bolt pattern. However I was advised by some more experienced members at the field that a prop strike with a plastic prop was likely to do internal damage to a gas engine. So I switched to wood props from VVRC (which they kindly drill at no charge) which also work fine but of course are prone to breaking in the event of a prop strike, hence a $14 landing, so I am focusing on improving my landing skills. Has anyone else heard of plastic props causing damage to gas engine crankshafts?

I'm with J.D.T. on this one. The one driving is the one responsible and those levelling the fine should have to prove who it is. It probably is the the registered owner but not necesarily, it could be the au par from Paris. Everyone should have a right to their day in court.

DLE 30 & Plastic Props
I am a nubie to gas engines and have a DLE 30 on which I have mounted a glass filled Master Airscrew propellor. I have been told by an experienced club member that plastic prop not good on a gas engine as it could transfer shock load to the crankshaft in the event of a rough landing that could be damaging. While I respect the advise of the member who gave me this information I am curious to hear of other views on this subject.

RE: Favorite Beer.
If you want a lager type try Stella Airtoir (spelling?) I think its from Belgim. For an ale go to UK and get a draught bitter it don't travel so its not available outside the country. I agree with the one person's comment about Budweiser, it's undrinkable. However I have to say that since the introduction of the so called micro brewerys in, I believe the early eightys there are some pretty decent American beers these days.

RE: Best and Worst Nitro Engine Powered RC Airplanes for Beginners in the Market
I am a relative beginner and learned to solo with a good instructor on an LT 40. No complaints up to soloing but I wasn't progressing very well beyond that. If I had it to do again I would probably go with an Avistar as you can progress into basic aerobatics. I also have a Tiger 60 and I like it, I wouldn't have thought of it as a basic trainer though because of its low wing but, with a good instructor I bet it would be fine.

You'r right I saw it on TV last night. Mustang was rated best fighter (but not until it borrowed the Spitfire's engine though) and the Spitfire number 2. If it's on TV we all know it must be true.

RE: Metric System
I get the impression that in U.K. they are officially on the metric system but the populace is hanging on to the old system. I was over there some years ago and whilst gas (petrol) was sold in litres a local gas station put up the price outside in gallons, his sales imediately doubled, so every gas station in the locality followed suit.

Metric System
Years ago when I was an enginering student the professors bemoaned the English system of pounds force lbf and pounds mass with I believe it was slugs and poundals as the corresponding mass and force units. We were told that once we embraced the metric system all this nonsense would disapear and Killograms would be the unit of mass and Newtons would be the unit of force. But I repeatedly see Killograms used as a unit of force. What do they use in the traditional metric countries, i.e. continental Europe and of late the U.K.?

RE: DLE Engine Pricing
I have a question concerning pricing of RC products. (or any products for that matter) How is it that for the most part items have the same price regardless of the vendor. I thought price fixing was against the law. My own brief research came up with the following. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890 prohibits vertical price fixing. The Miller-Tyndale Act 1935 and the McGuire Act 1952 exempts state fair-trade laws from the Sherman Act. The Consumer Goods Pricing Act 1975 (backed by President Ford) puts state fair trade laws back under the Sherman Act. It would appear to me that price fixing is against the law, am I missing something?

RE: MythBuster TV Show (Jetcat P-60SE project)
It will move in the direction the jet is pushing but slowly. Newton's law is in effect but the turbine thrust is partially cancelled out by the air hitting the sail, again Newton's law. If 100% of the energy of the air hitting the sail was converted into thrust the thing would stand still. However there will be losses so it will move in the durection the jet is pushing but more slowly.
