RE: Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
I took a look around and found this which might work: http://www.bhplans.com/ I appreciate all the information you are helping me with. It certainly is a different ball game working just off plans. I have wanted to do this for a long time, I just wish I would have started a long ago. Dan

RE: Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
Hi Mike, The outer skin calls for hard 3/32 balsa. I guess what I didn't get is that in looking at the firewall and bulkhead drawing those plans didn't show any of the stringers. I hope when I get to that point it may become more clear. My plan is to use a .60 - .70 size four stroke and I will need to make a different firewall that is much closer to the F bulkhead to make room for the larger size engine. Dan

RE: Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
Here are more questions. First photo shows the front 2 bulkheads labeled F & I. It shows 1/4" dowels being glued thru F and into I. On I, there is shadow lines of 1/4" spruce. On the side view of the fuselage it shows the 1/4" spruce sticks running all the way to the front bulkhead F. It looks to me after looking at the top view of the plans that I should cut the 1/4" spruce stick right in front of former 2 and then cut 1/4" spruce and glue in front of former 2 to the back of bulkhead I. It then looks like you are supposed to glue 1/4 balsa to the edge of bulkheads F & I to help give the 3/32 fuselage sheeting, or planking, support. If I am correct in my thoughts will this give enough support for the engine? Dan

RE: Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
Hi Mike, Thank you for that information. That helps very much. I really find this a challenge and I hope this all goes well. There is a lot more that I will probably need to ask before all is said and done. I think once completed, doing a build like this will be much more rewarding than a kit build. Dan

RE: Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
Mike, The plans show the gussets ......................lots of them. On the top sides of the fuselage the plans call for a bend near the wing and in the comments given in a separate piece of paper, the writer speaks of making the bend using a "crack method". I'm not familiar with that term but it sounds like you would actually be taking the 1/4" spruce stick and bending it until it brakes, or almost breaks, to make the bend. I had thought of just using a razor saw to cut nearly thru but not all the way and then make the bend?? Dan

RE: Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
The entire fuselage is essentially a stick build. I know the areas under the wing will definitely stay spruce, but a lot of that fuselage aft of the wing I can probably use balsa. The plans are okay but do leave a little to be desired in some areas. I have built other kits before and this is the first time building strictly off of plans. I've done several evenings of studying the plans and most of it makes sense. As I start to build this, I'm sure things will start to click. Should be fun and will certainly be a challenge. Dan

Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer question....
I just received the plans and cowl for a Vince Miller 1/5 scale Tri Pacer which has a 71" span. I have looked over the plans for the last couple of nights and have a question regarding using spruce for most of the framing on this plane. The plans show using 1/4" spruce for framing up the model and while I know it will be strong, is it necessary to use the spruce? I guess I shouldn't second guess the designer on this but I am curious. Also, on the plans they show the model using a Enya .45 2 stroke. I'm thinking I may want to use a Saito .72 or the OS FS-62V in this Tri Pacer. I have not found much info on this size of Tri Pacer when I searched so will welcome any information. Thank you, Dan

Farmerric, As far as the windshield for your DP Super Cub, give this company a try. He had some at one time, even though it is not listed on their website. The windshiled fit perfect as I have on on my DP Cub and I not long ago referred another DP Cub owner to Aerotech for a windshield as well. http://aerotechmodels.com/ Dan

RE: ECOMRC TigerMoth 1/4 Scale
Dbp7966, That Moth looks good so far, but there's no way I'd ever use a push nut to hold the aileron linkage to the servo arm. That set up just seem likes it's doomed for failure. Are you going to stay with that method? Dan

shd3920, I will give you another update tomorrow on this but I received a message on my cell phone from Mosquito Bite Planes today. I sent an email inquiry so know I know their email address works. I will be calling tomorrow and try to get kit availability, if any, when I call. Dan

RE: Wing SHeeting question......
Huck1199, Thank you for the help. I went back and took a look at things again after your reply and it finally sunk into my fat head. Got the sheeting on and I'm on to more building. I almost forgot how enjoyable building can be. SHD3920, As far as I know this kit hasn't been available for many years. I had it stashed away and finally decided to build it. Mosquito Bite Plane's website is still up but their phone number is not working and the last time I tried to get an email response from them I received no reply. It's a shame too because this kit is very nice and very straight with laser cut interlocking parts that does not require you to build over the plans. You only use the plans for reference. Dan

Wing SHeeting question......
After many ARFs I decided to build a Tri Pacer kit from Mosquito Bite Planes. It's been a long time since I have built a kit and maybe I'm not understanding the instructions for the wing sheeting. It reads to me that you don't glue the sheeting to the ribs, but only glueing to the top pf the main spar and then the leading edge of the wing. Would that be correct? Here is the instruction manual for reference, the wing sheeting is on page 13. http://mosquitobiteplanes.com/TRP_man_14_web.pdf Dan

84" QUAKER RE-FINISH PHOTOS
I have had this Quaker for many years and just put it away. I originally bought this one from a member of my club back around 1998 and who has built at least 20 of these. I stripped the covering off when I first brought it home and as things go, it sat around in the bones up until now. I finally got tired of looking at it recently and started to clean it up and make some improvements to the structure and that was mostly confined to the wing. After all the improvements were done, I cleaned up everything and started covering. I must admit that this is the first time I have used Monokote to completely cover a plane. I have always used Ultrcoat or fabric coverings and paint. I went with Monokote because I did not want to paint this time and they have several flat colors to pick from. I used olive drab flat and gray flat and I'm sure I'll get feedback on this, but I liked working with Monokote and I think the results came out well. I tried to create a scheme based on the Harley-Davidson WLA miltary motorcycle that was used in WWII. I contacted Callie Graphics to print/cut out all the graphics you see here and she does excellent work plus her pricing is fantastic. On the nose the E Award was awarded to H-D from the U.S. government for their excellent production during the war, the nose art is a girl sitting on top of a Flathead Harley engine that powered the WLA motorcycle, the 'FLYING is Next Best" on the fuselage side is the exact font style and wording from a WWII Harley-Davidson ad, and the Harley-Davidson graphics on the bottom of the wing were made from the font type from an original WWII Harley advertisement. The WLA motorcycle was nicknamed the Liberator and I chose to use that to create this whole idea. I will be using a Saito .65 for power, I just have not installed it permanently. That will happen this week. Radio gear is all in and I hope to take this one out to the field in the next week or two. I have another Quaker so I do know how they fly, I'm lookin' forward to getting another one in the air. Feel free to comment good or bad. Dan

RE: Balloon Tires
Tim, I looked around a bit and this is the only alternative I've come across: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD798&P=ML This is a little bigger than you are looking for but it's close: http://www.kavanrc.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/IndexText/F0097AE.html?E+Kav I've used the CUB wheels on other models, I just sand the hubcap down to eliminate the CUB letters and repaint the color I want. I heard my tag line while at a TOC competition in Las Vegas many, many years ago. Dan

RE: Bearings needed please
Scott, I looked up bearing sizes for a Magnum XLS61A and the sizes show 10X22X6 for the front and 17X35X8 for the rear. If you go to RCBearings website and use the search function there, entering these sizes, you should find what you're looking for. I've ordered several times from them and have been very pleased with the pricing and delivery time. Dan

Okay, maybe I'm seeing things and not thinking correct. Your tail wheel and rudder should move in the same direction, yes? no?. I'm watchin' the video you made of your control surface movment and either I'm backwards or the control setup for the tailwhell needs changing. Dan

RE: World Models Paulistinha P56
Sorry there are no pics of video but I ran the engine today to get it broke in and ready for the maiden. As this is first time for me with an RCV CD engine I wasn't sure what to expect and the end results are very good so far. The engine starts right away and I could sure tell it as new. After running the engine for 15 minutes at 1/4 throttle and very rich, I let it cool down. Re-started the engine, adjusted the high end and the idle needle and ran it for another 20 minutes. Seems like the engine puts out adequate power with an APC 11 x 7 prop, Powermaster 15% fuel. At the end of the last run I can get a very low idle out of it and still get smooth throttle transition to high end even after letting it sit at idle for long periods of time. So far I'm pleased with this engine choice but I can tell you this is one MESSY engine! I had read about this from other RCV CD owners and wasn't surprised. It sends a lot of oil out the crankcase breather and spits out a little form the front part of the engine which may be coming from behind the thrust washer. It's not a big deal but when your used to Saito's and OS engines, it will get your attention! With that out of the way, there's nothing to do now except ...........................FLY IT! Dan

World Models Paulistinha P56
I just finished assembling a World Models Paulistinha P56 and thought I'd share a few pics. I can't leave well enough alone and I usually make a few modifications. This is the first time I have assembled anything from World Models and I can say that the quality was fairly good. The plane goes together easily enough and when completed, I think looks good. I decided to use a RCV .58CD just because I had it available, it's compact and I think fits the plane well. I really liked the supplied clear cowl material that you use as a template for the cut outs you need to make for your engine install. I haven't run the engine yet, that will happen on Monday. The exhaust header thread size is 11 x .75 so I was able to use an O.S. 90 deg header and a 75 deg elbow from Performance Specialties to keep the muffler under the engine and exit out of the bottom of the cowl. I used a larger Sullivan 10 oz fuel tank that should give me longer flight times. I changed out the supplied wheels and install DuBro Cub Wheels, sanded the hub caps and painted them white. I also used a 2" Great Planes spinner that comes with a lightened aluminum backplate. I had never used these spinners before and I really like it! I changed out all of the metric hardware and used standard sizes. I used 2/56 wire pushrod for the elevator and rudder and instead of using the kit supplied captive, screw together method that holds the 2 pushrods of the elevator together, I decided to use Dave Brown pushrod material. I just felt better using what I am familiar with and like. I solder the clevis on the servo ends of all the pushrods with the exception of the throttle. I did use the control horns from the kit and I do like those very much. I replaced the kit supplied pilot which looked kind of out of place and a little on the small size with a 1/6 scale pilot from Horizon Hobby and I think looks better. CG came out spot on by moving my battery and receiver to the back of the cockpit. I did not bolt the struts down to the mounts on the fuselage when I took these pictures. Control throws are set up per the manual and I should be able to find out how this model flies this coming Wednesday.:)

RE: World Models Paulistinha P56
I have had quite a few different ARFs over the last few years and I did enjoy putting this one together more than some of the others and I very much want to get it in the air. I had read Geoff's review on this plane and hope mine flies as well. I have no experience with this RCV engine, but what I was able to read about from others who have one, it sounds like it will do well. I can't wait to show up to the field and have the guys come up and say, "Nice Cub!" :) Dan
