RE: Retrival Ideas
The coolest retrieval device I ever saw was a crossbow! This guy put putty on the tips of the quarrel and then some kind of sticky goo over the putty. The tip was soft and VERY sticky. He would tie a string/rope to the quarrel and then..Shoot! Kind of like BowFishing! Besides a fetcher boat (canoe, pirogue, dingy, or flatboat) I use a fishing pole with a tennis ball with a fishing weight on the top part. I can really put that thing far, easily over 100yrds!! But most of the time I take my RC boats on "fishing trips" in my big boat. I anchor the big boat in the middle of the Bayou and then use the kicker motor to troll to the stalled RC boat.

Clutch on R/C buggy
I've been into boats for years. I'm fairly new to cars. I've owned a few electric cars/trucks and one other nitro drift care besides the one I just got for father's day. It is a generic 4 whl dr buggy with a .15 car engine. I broke it in and for awhile she ran like a champ! I then took her to a park that had a lot of sand. It was so cool to see the car run in the sand. But after the engine wouldn't run. So I cleaned the car up with a rag and checked fuel to carb and glow plug. I check the head to ensure there was no sand in the cylinder. I set the HS needle on a rich setting and then also enriched the LS needle. I got the engine to run but now I have another problem with the clutchat least I'm pretty sure that it is the clutch. Like I said I've been into boats for years. For nitro boats usually the boat is direct driveThe prop spins as long as the motor is running. If you just place such a boat running in the water it will usually kill unless you have someone revving the engine for you. You usually give the boat a little throttle and then you toss it forward into the water and away she goes. Well I have to do that with this car. I have to bend low to the ground and toss the car to get it to keep running. If the car gets hung up by like tall grass or something it will kill. At first I thought it was my tuning. But when the car is bench running even at low idle the tires are spinning; hold 2 or more tires or place the car on the ground while holding it from going away (even if the idle is set very high), and it kills. I'm beginning to think that sand may be fouling the clutchmaking the clutch stick. If this is the case do I have to pull the engine to clean out the clutch? Does the clutch have springs that may pop out when I pull the clutch bell? Is blowing out the assembly with compressed air wise? Thanks for the help. The best thing about cars is, no need to go swimming or start up my big boat to go fetch them!! [:D]

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
Cool I just went out on my big boat today and of course my r/c went with me. It was a bad day for r/c'ing. It was very windy and the bayou was choppy. I found the calmest part I could and ran some of my FE's then I put the gator in the water. All was well, she screamed down the bayou. Then the wind and choppy water picked up some more. Since the addition of the 4-40 washers this was the first time I've unintentionally flipped the Gator. I drained it out and let it sit for a little while and ran my Dumas Windy, then some more FE's. I the fired the Gator up again and put her in the water, she flipped almost instantly. Then again,1 of the FE's flipped and so did the Windy. It was a terrible day to be r/c'ing; disgusted I went in. Oh yeah, and then to top it off my outboard wouldn't start at the launch to put the boat on the trailer. I got all wet puting the boat on the trailer w/o driving it up! I should've just stayed home![&o]

To wakebd and doby: these forums would be a whole lot better place w/o all the childish name calling. If you think someone has given bad advice just say that their advice is not recommended and why you think so. Backing up your statements with experience and/or established facts makes you seem more intelligent not making the other guy look less intelligent.

RE: KSJ Pacer airboat
Since my second r/c love is FE, I also have been considering a FE airboat. On the Speed electric forum there is a FE guide written by a fellow named Ryan. I've used it to help me with submerged prop FE's. His advice could also be used for airboats with a little out of the box thinking. He basically talks about battery to motor to esc to hull size/type to prop size/type. I've found his info invaluable. As for Lipo batts, I would definately recommend having them enclosed in some kind of water proofing. I'm currently working on coverting a 40" v-hull Nitro boat to FE and since it has an open deck I've water proofed the ESC with shrink wrap and liquid electrical tape and sealed all the wiring with liquid electrical tape. As for the 2 5000mAh 3s1p 30c - 60c burst LiPo's connected in series, I'll encase them in thick plastic or rubber bags with the open end pinched together with rubber bands. The motor will be open (ram) air and is water cooled with a water jacket. On an airboat, I'd probably go with a heat sink/aircooler instead so that the boat can be run on grass. Since both my airboats are nitro, I'd love to make an FE airboat. Since this current FE project is only awaiting a motor to flex coupler my next project is on the horizon; FE airboat. I'd like to make a scale one if I could find out where to get a cage. I hate brazing; I'm not too good at it.[:D]

RE: LiPo puffy
Well, after watching several videos on you tube of Lipo's catching fire and exploding I can say that their explosive power is maybe that of black powder a low explosive. It may not even be as powerful as black powder, but I wouldn't want one exploding in my hand! The main concern seems to be the very hot long burning fire that can happen with a faulty pack and it igniting other combustibles around it. Therefore I think the BBQ pit is a safe place for them for now; until I can dispose of them by imersion in salt water. Thanks for all the help! I greatly appreciate it. LiPo puffy
Question: When LiPo pacs puff out do they feel squishy? I have an older set of LiPo pacs that I've been running in my BJ 26. They are not hard case. They have been submerged in water a few times but I've drained them good and they have so far performed flawlessly. After being wet and then charging them they have slightly puffed out. They seem squishy not hard puffed. So are they just water logged or are they puffed out from too many cycles? After reading several articles about lipos catching fire and exploding i'm kind of leary of cutting off the shrink wrap before I know for sure they are damaged or water logged. I hope someone responds fast as these cells are now fully charged and in my house.

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
Well tomorrow I'm heading out on the Amite river to run my boats (full size and r/c). I'm running my 2 nitro airboats and a couple of FE's. I might do some crabbing too, I hear they are running good and are pretty fat; boiled crabs in Zatarans crab boil with some cayenne pepper and corn and red taters; C'est si bon!!!! I can't wait to run my Gator again on water, grass is just not the same. I also have a Dumas Windy that I put an OS .25fp on. She's not too fast on the front lawn but on the water....[;)] Since I'm going by myself I won't be doing any chasing r/c's with my big boat it will just be used as a platform and a fetcher...woooo hooo I'm excited, it'as been awhile. The only r/c'ing I've been doing lately is at my mom and dad's pond. I don't really push the boats there because if they stall or flip I have to go swimming or use a tube or something to fetch them. Man, I need to get a Pirogue. I've been wanting one for awhile. They are the best boats for fetching. In case your wondering a Pirogue (pronounced peerow or peerow' G ) is a Cajun flatbottomed canoe like boat built for shallow water (like the swamps in South La.). Since the bottom is flat they don't flip as easily as a canoe or kayak. We Cajuns often stand up in them and use a push pole or paddle for propulsion. There's a dude on e-bay that sells them (fiberglass pirogues for about $300-$400) and will ship, just query "pirogue" in the ebay search.

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
Living in South Louisiana we have alligators too. The difference is we Cajun's eat them before they eat us! [:D] Joke: This baby crawfish and momma crawfish are in the bottom of a pond swimming along. All of a sudden a shadow passes over them. The baby crawfish gets scared, but the momma crawfish says don't worry baby that's just a mullet and they don't eat crawfish. They then swam to the surface, another shadow appeared above them in the sky... The baby crawfish got scared again. The momma crawfish said don't worry baby that's just a sea gull and they don't eat crawfish either. They then swam to the shore line and then another shadow appeared above them... The momma crawfish screamed to her baby run quick..that's a Cajun and they eat anything!!![:D] I've never had a problem with my servos getting wet and before I zeroed the thrust angle my Gator flipped on a regular basis. I always did tape the box with electrical tape though.

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
I just take my r/c boats on my "fishing trips" in my bass boat. My poor fishing poles just gathering dust. [:D] I go out to this island off of the Amite River in Ascension Parrish, La. On the island you can swim, swing off of a rope swing and there is even a place to BBQ! It's about a 15min speed boat ride from the launch. It is also a great spot for r/c 'ing as the diversion canal has little to no big boat traffic and is very calm even on windy days. I use my trolling motor to fetch flipped r/c boats. Using my big boat is cool because it's a great platform on the water to r/c from. And, one of my favorite things to do is to use the big boat as a chase boat! Of couse you have to have another person to drive the big boat while you drive the r/c boats or vice versa. To stop your Gator from flipping try a zeroing the thrust angle of the prop with the addition of 2 #4 flat washers on the rear motor mounts. After this slight mod my Gator hardly ever flips anymore. I almost have to try to flip it. [8D]

RE: scale deep vee suggestions?
You might also want to check out Cen Racing, the Grey Thunder with the 775 motor stock is FAST. I traded a Grey thunder .16 Nitro for a Cen Baja w/ an extra 775 motor unmounted. The Baja had its original 550 motor in it. The boat was decently fast with its stock motor; about 20-25mph. I added the 775 with a Navy 60amp ESC, a LiPo saver voltage cutoff, a larger 36mm prop, and a 14.8v 25c 3000mAh 4s1p LiPo. The Baja really moves now; about 35-40mph. She's almost as fast as the BJ 26!!! I've dusted a guy with a .15 nitro motor on a generic v-hull with it. He didn't believe that it was a brushed motor until I showed it to him. The only problem with the boat now is it gets hot fast with the prop I have on it. I only get a 10min run time before the motor is HOT!!! Of course with the stock prop I don't get the performance that I do with the larger Prop I've added, I would get a longer run time. The added prop is a 36mm prop I got off of an old .18 Nitro hydro that got into a fight with an 18ft bass boat and lost; head on smackeroonie. I was lucky to recover what I did. [&o] The Villian is a good electric boat. I've seen one run at a pond that I frequent. I believe you won't be disappointed. I wonder what the Villian would do with added BL motors of 550 size??? It would probably need 2 14.8v lipos and 2 ESC's, but man it would fly!!! [:D]

RE: scale deep vee suggestions?
Black jack 26 by proboat; UL-1 by Aquacraft, SV 27 by Aquacraft all these are great with LiPo's and at most you'll spend about $600 max. BJ 26 $299; LiPos 2 @ approx $100ea; LiPo charger @ $100. I own a BJ 26 w/ 7.4v 25c 4000mAh 2s1p LiPo's; It really moves!!! The $600 can be brought down significantly by buying the LiPos and charger on E-bay. I've seen brand name LiPo's like Thunder Power for almost half the price you'll pay at a hobby store!! I paid $55 each for my batts and $65 for the charger on ebay. I've ran about 12-15 cycles through the batts and they are still running strong!!! If you want to build your own FE boat try: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_index.asp for motors. Get a good ESC (you don't want to skimp on the ESC). Good luck.

RE: 48' electric deep vee
Here you go: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_index.asp For LiPo's try E-bay. I've just built a 40" v-hull I used a 1200kv KB 45 with a 120amp ESC; octura x452 prop. HobbyKing (given above) sells a 700kv, while too much motor for my boat this motor should be perfect for you. You can get a good motor water cooling jacket for offshore electrics. As well as an ESC cooler from them. You probably need to go 10s on the LiPo batts. I'd suggest 2 5s 18.5v 25c or < 4000-5500mAh 5s1p or better LiPo packs connected in series. That will deliver 37v!!!

RE: Convert Nitro to LiPo boat
Check out the thread above you: "Choosing a appropriate FE setup..." The info there will help you greatly. Try out this site for cheap FE goodies: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_index.asp I'm currently in the final stages of converting a nitro boat to FE myself. I have a v-hull 40" nitro boat that had an OS max .65 vr-m in it. It now has a 580 size BL motor (KB 45) and an 120amp ESC. I'm considering 2 11.1v 30c 5000mah 3s1p LiPo packs in series for the boat. All I have left to do is pick a good radio; program the esc and buy the batts. For good LiPo's for the cheapest prices I've found ( I price shopped quite a bit) e-bay is it. I've seen brand name batt's like Thunder Power NIB for almost half the price you'll pay at the hobby store!!

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
It is a awesome model boat. It's my favorite. I liked mine so much that I got out of nitro marine boating in favor of airboats and FE. I also have a Dumas Windy. I put a .25 OS max FP on it; I had to mod the boat like crazy to fit this engine. The boat is rated for a .10! I'm considering changing the .34 Super tigre for the .46 MECOA swamp buggy/heli engine. I'm hoping that I won't have to mod the boat so that I can switch back to the Super Tigre as a B-up. I've also looked at the .50 OS Heli engine, its designed to fit in the space of a .30 size engine. Since I'm also into FE a brushless airboat is also being considered as one of my near future projects.

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
Go to your hobby store and get a fiberglass repair kit with patches and some grey model paint. Yes your plug is bad. My Gator goes through plugs pretty fast when I run it on grass. I maybe get 10-12 5min runs then I have to change plugs. I've tried running the boat as rich as possible w/o it stalling and it still eats plugs on grass. On water your plugs will last longer.

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
If the boat wants to flip on you put 2 #4 washers on the back 2 motor mounts to level the engine. Aquacraft factory sets the thrust angle at +6deg. Their thinking is to plant the aft end into the water to raise the bow making the boat go faster. While the top end will be a little faster with this method the problem is that on turns the airboat tends to want to flip over. Zeroing the thrust angle with the addition of the 2 washers will fix this. You want the washers to be on the motor mounts closest to the fuel tank. Do you own a brazing torch? You might need one. I got one at Lowes (and they have it a Home Depot) for $50. The brazing rods cost about $10. If you flip the boat on grass (and even on water) you may damage the cage. The joints will pop off. You can spend $50 over and over again replacing the cage or learn how to braze (if you don't already know how). It's more like soldering than welding. For all its headaches this is a really fun r/c boat. I've since gotten rid of all my Nitro marine engine boats, in favor of air powered boats and Fast Electrics. Brushless electric motors are faster than nitro engines!! But that's another story... [:D]

RE: AquaCraft Alligator RTR
Unfortunately the Gator really isn't a boat that is good for beginners. Get w/ your friend that knows about nitro engines you are probably going to need his help. Super Tigre engines have rough breakins some very rough. Mine had a cylinder head leakthe fix is to pull the engine then pull the head and there is a spur on the head shim that may need to be grinded slightly w/ fine sand paper. You have to grind just enough to stop the leak, any more will change the compression ratio of the engine and it won't run right. The manual said 4 turns out on the high speed needle, tech support told me 1.5 turns out, (to tune the engine you need to remember in is clockwise called leaning out=less fuel more air, and ccw is richening more fuel less air.) Try 3 turns out first, if it won't start try 2.5 or 2 then, 1.5, 1.25, 1.125, 1 until it starts (most manuals and books will tell you to change the HS needle in 1/8th increments (0.125)). You might want to read something about tuning nitro engines and nitro engine breakin; it wouldn't hurt. My Gator runs best at about 1.125 to 1.25 turns out but I live in south Louisiana it is very humid here (and below sea level). Some people have complained about Super Tigre engines on here, and I'll admit that they are some bad running engines until they are properly broken in, but once it is broken in you will see a difference. My Super Tigre starts up usually on the first spin and runs like a champ. If you are planning on running on grass, remember this: the best time to run it is right after you mow the lawn. Do not run the boat up hill and only run for about 5 mins as the engine will get hot!! Use the spit test, spit on the head, if the spit boils away immediately and rapidly the engine is too hot pinch the fuel line to shut it down immediately. If the spit sits there a bit then boils off not so rapidly then you are allright.

On the HobbyKing site some people are recommending drilling holes in the front and back of the motor to cool it. One guy says that it cooled his motor by almost 20deg C. I'm considering doing that also. My question is how do you pull the front and rear plates from the can w/o damaging the motor? I got a good jacket from OffShoreElectrics. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=kb-kb45-f580L fits perfectly!

RE: 32
Kv is the term for rpm per volt; for instance the motor is 2750kv so for that motor running a 4s (14.8v) LiPo 2750 x 14.8= 40700rpm if you increase to 6s (22.2v) 2750 x 22.2v=61050rpmat that high rpm the possibility of mechanical failure is high. Look at the motor, ESC, batt thread for FE's toward the top of this forum there is a lot of usuful info there.

RE: esc's and bec
A BEC is a Battery Eliminator Circuit. Some ESC's have internal BEC's some don't so you have to buy an external BEC to not have to use a reciever pack to power the reciever. If you're running a set up with large cell counts like more than 4s LiPo or 14s NiMH then you don't want to use a BEC (you could fry your reciever) and should use an external reciever pack to power your reciever.

RE: 580 Brushless KB45-08XL
I'm probably going to go to a machine shop to have it done professionally rather than use a drill (or Dremel tool) to do it myself. Bore a 5mm to 6mm that is not too drastic a change. Boring a 4mm to 6mm will probably weaken the structure of the coupler. Ask your machine shop guy he'll tell you if it can or can't be done.

I just bought the 1200Kv one from them. I asked the same question. The correct answer given to me on this forum was to bore a 5mm coupler to 6mm. That way if you mess up you only loose a cheap coupler rather than a motor shaft.

RE: Why Airboats
On the bayou, in the shallow waters of South Louisiana. You need either a pirogue or an airboat to get around to the good fishing holes. Most of my family are oyster fishermen or trawl for a living (fish shrimp). I learned how to drive a boat before I learned how to drive a car. I love the water and boats in general. So building a running r/c boats is a passion. I've been into r/c boating for about 4-5 yrs now. What has helped me in building r/c boats is my knowledge of fullscale boats. Neglecting the radio equipment, the only difference between a scale and an r/c boat is size. I was first introduced to airboats when my paw paw (grandfather) took me duck hunting. My great uncle had an airboat that we used to get to the blinds. Since then I've always thought airboats were awesome. Of r/c boating, airboats to me are the best. The most obvious advantage is the engines. There are more aero model engines than marine model engines so selection of a power plant is much easier for airboats. Also, a submerged prop (and rudder) can hit underwater obstacles that an airboat will just hop over with little or no difficulty (or damage to the boat). The best reason I like airboats is because I can run them on my lawn grass.[:D]

Check this website out: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_listCategoriesAndProducts.asp?idCategory=64&curPage=4&v=&sortlist= I've owned a few of these motors and they are awesome. The best thing about them is the price. Read the reviews on the site and see for yourself. They also sell ESC's and other accessories but I usually spend the extra money in the ESC dept. If you look at the top of this speed electric forum there is a guide on building BL electric setups. I've found the information invaluable. I'm currently building a FE 40" V-hull that had a .65 OS Max vr-m in it. After many head aches with nitro marine engines, I now only have Nitro aero engines for my airboats and FE boats. For Power go LiPo, check ebay, yes ebay! I bought several Lipo's of good quality on ebay. For my BJ 26 BL I bought 2 7.4v 25c burst 35c 4000mah 2s1p LiPo packs for $56 for the both of them!!! I've run over 10 charge / discharge cycles through them with no problems. Using my Big boat as a chase boat, the big boat's speed-o-meter said between 40 and 45 mph, dead center, so I estimate 43mph. Also for an old Cen Baja that I put a 775 in with brushed ESC and LiPo BL voltage cutoff device; I got a 14.8v 35c burst 40c 3000mah 4s1p LiPo pack for $60, again on ebay!!! So far I've run it through about 5 cycles with no trouble (sorry no speed data on this one as it hasn't been on a "fishing" trip with me yet ). Contrary to popular belief you don't have to spend a fortune to get good quality hobby grade R/C stuff. You just have to do good web searches and make sure you are dealing with reputable websites.

RE: Help with converting 40
Thanks Rick. I already have a water jacket for the motor that I got from Offshore Electrics. I was asking if it is advisable to leave the open deck on the boat or should I make a cover for it. The electronics ( r/x and steering servo will be in the radio box which is water proof. The ESC can't be placed in the radio box because of interference issues so I thought of shrink wrapping it and using liquid electrical tape to waterproof it. So the only things exposed to the open air (and splash water) would be the motor itself, power wiring / connectors, and the batt(s). Again thanks for you help I greatly appreciate it!!! Oh yeah, and the coupler idea is a good one I'll do that.
