RE:
I'm looking at going with the new DLE35RA, with rear exhaust port, rear carb, and rear-facing plug. Troy Built has 'em for $349 shipped. I had a chance to examine the fiberglass cowl from Fiberglass Specialties (nice!), and it looks like the DLE35RA will fit nicely, with the exception of the exposed cylinder head, but that's actually a good thing for keeping the engine cool.

Scaleman, Congrats on your 108 build. That was fast. So, hey, let's not steal this SR9 thread I'll be looking for your pics on a fresh thread in this forum, and I'll post some of mine there, too. Can't wait to hear how you like it after the first flights! dg.

Finally rear carb AND rear exhaust!
Well, it seems the manufacturers of small two-stroke gassers have heard our pleas, and now even DLE is offering their popular engines with a rear carb/rear exhaust configuration. They even have the spark plug facing aft. Yeah, baby!! Now we can squeeze these powerful little powerplants into the narrowest of cowls, without having half it it stick out the sides. http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/DLE35RENGINE.html http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/DLE55RENGINE.html Now if we can just get them to come up with a box mount so we can get rid of those flimsy extensions that tend to crack the mounting lugs...

RE:
I just scored a copy of the Santich Knight Twister plans from Air Age, with their Fourth of July half-off sale, and now I have a scan of the construction article, from poster "BPS" (thanks, Jerry!). Now to snag a cowl and wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialties. Hoping to start on this project when the rains return in the fall. I'm thinking of a DLE55 as a possibility, but this may be too much engine for the tapered nose of the Knight Twister. Would a DLE30 be enough go for this airframe? How about an Evo 40GT? Savvy opinions solicited.

RE: Black Horse Pitts
Jeb, I still have my NIB kit waiting in the wings. A brand-new DLE20 is ready to mount up, and I have all servos, etc. Should be up on the boards as soon as I finish my Giant Aeromaster build. I guess this kit is no longer available, eh? Makes me glad I snagged this one at the $199 sale price at HP, before they ran out. One of the few astute things I have done in my life.

RE: How do you fly your planes?
Anyone ever tried doing aerobatics to music, with headphones? Pick a nice, sweeping sound track with full orchestration and lots of strings, and you will soon discover a whole new way of flying. I learned this trick with a .40-size GP P51 that I used to like to throw around the sky in a most unscale-like fashion. Then, one day a guy turned me on to flying to music, and suddenly my maneuvers were breathtakingly graceful. The loops ate up most of the sky, rolls were slow and surprisingly axial, and even my hang maneuvers had an aspect of transcendental grace to them. I didn't even realize I was doing it, until after I got back to the pits, and my buddy said "Man, I didn't know that Mustang could fly so SCALE!!" Changed my whole outlook on flying that plane.

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Mike, I fly my H9 Cub with the Saito 125, and I'd say it is just about as perfect a match as you will find. I was going to mount my DLE20 in there, but I prefer the four-stroke sound for something as regal as a big yellow Cub. The DLE20 will go in my BH Pitts. I'm running a 16x8APC prop on mine seems to do the job with no complaints. Fun, fun plane. You're going to enjoy it......! ;)

RE: New E-Flite Cessna 150 Aerobat
I used to own a 1969 J-model Cessna 150. Wonderful airplane. Took it to Oshkosh, Grand Canyon, Northern Rockies, etc. It was reliable, cheap, and plenty roomy for one guy plus gear. The day will come when the little "One-Fifty" will be regarded with the same affectionate esteem as the Piper Cub enjoys today, and the idea of a small two-place airport-hopper made of all sheet metal and rivets will seem as much an anachronism to those in the future as fabric and wood does now. I may pick up one of these E-flite versions, if I don't build my Guillow's 150 first.

RE: BH Pitts
ORIGINAL: ColeTrane Flycatch, Im running .5*+ bottom wing, 1.5+ top wing, 6*DT and 2*RT.
ColeTrane, I've read some of your other posts on this topic. What is "DT" and "RT", please? Okay, never mind. I assume you mean down thrust and right thrust. OP from Flycatch: What you are describing sounds like a classic case of nose-heavy to me. At slow speeds, the decalage is taking care of things, but at higher speeds (your three-quarter throttle setting), the decalage becomes more pronounced, and you then have to correct by reducing it with some down elevator trim. The fact that you need to carry a lot of down elevator in inverted flight substantiates this suspicion, as that is also an indicator of a nose-heavy condition. Running out of elevator in the flare clinches it for me. You need to move your CG back. And yes, I agree with others here that you need to know how much decalage you have, and how much incidence you have in each wing.

RE: Can you identify this glider
Dunno what this glider is, but I like it! Kinda reminds me of a plan I have in my collection, a 90" Italian design from 1942 called the MA-2. This ain't it, though, but it is similar.

RE: Herr J-3 First kit w/ pic
Scotty, I have this kit NIB, waiting its turn on the building boards, and I gotta agree with Flyingagin. What the box says (21oz) is what you would need to come in at in order to fly this Cub with the particular engine this kit was designed for, which was the Thunder Tiger GP07. I have one of those engines, and a powerhouse it is not. They run great, idle great, good transition, excellent service life, but they don't pull very hard, so a lightweight airframe is important. Whether anyone has ever built one to 21oz is a good question, though. When I build my Herr Cub, I will be powering it with one of my OS10FP engines. I'm hoping to come in at around 30oz or so, I will be happy, and will expect to have a small Cub that I can fly at the local ball field with no problems. As a point of reference for you, my Pilot 1 Piper PA-12, at 52 inches, weighs 40oz, and my TT GP15 hauls it around just fine.

RE: New Great Planes Shoestring
Everybody still flying theirs? Mine goes like snot on a OS46FX. Good for scaring the junkyard dog, and small children. Whadda screamer. I've started getting used to landing long when there's no wind. The Shoestring comes in flat, and bleeds off excess speed very slowly. If you get it right, it will land and roll to a stop before the midfield turn-off. If you get it wrong, it will just keep on scooting by, right down through the frog hair at the far end of the runway. Man, what a slippery plane! My favorite maneuver is big giant loops, with a nice, crisp snap roll on top, leave it hanging for a half-second before pulling on through to finish the loop. Fun stuff!

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Great idea, Casey! What a hoot! I also need to look into a sound system, so it will play "Tequila" as I do low passes over the runway.... and maybe some dingleballs in the side windows, and a Virgen de Guadalupe on the dash... ay, caramba!

RE: Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Piper Cub ARF???
Just flew my new H9 quarter-scale Cub last week absolutely love it! Saito 125 hauls it around in fine fashion, well concealed with no overheating problems. Man, does it look SCALE on the wing, though! Cheech and Chong are doing the driving, got the pilots off the internet for a mere $40 for both, and they are proportional to the plane, and pretty light. Loops and rolls, hammerheads and avalanches, and tons of touch-n-goes in both directions are all part of the repertoire. Cubs are SO very cool.

RE: Please, please...somebody tell me they've made a goof like this!!
One of my very first builds was a Guillow's 16" P-40 Warhawk, back in the '60s, when I was a lad. I glued all the ribs on backwards, between the leading edge and trailing edge. Ack. I finally caught my mistake, before the covering stage, but what a lot of surgery to get those ribs turned around!!
ORIGINAL: Wyoming Cowboy I don't think I will ever understand why foam wheels are included with a scale airplane...
1/5th scale foam wheels six bucks 1/5th scale Cub-style wheels 25 bucks Some guys just don't care what kind of wheels they hide inside the wheelpants, so as a manufacturer, which would you provide in the kit? I'm with you, though, Cowboy. I think wheels that look good and hold up to time on a nice scalie that deserves the extra touch are well worth the extra dollars. I have a whole bunch of cheap foamie wheels on hand. They'll find a home someday, on junky stuff that I don't have any love for.

RE: Worst Production Aircraft Of All Time
Though not a factory production aircraft, many were built from plans during the pre-war years, and several fatalities resulted. Who would think to put the forward wing just slightly above and forward of the lower wing, and NOT have problems with the interactive airflow of the two surfaces at higher speeds? One vote for the Pou-du-Ciel French homebuilt from the 1920's.

Here's my muffler support bracket installation. I'd heard these 90-degree fittings can break, if you don't support the weight of the muffler. (Cable tie was temporary, replaced with a hose clamp for in-service). ...and I'm using a 15x8 APC prop on my Saito 125, as well.

RE: NEW H9 P51 Mustang 60 ARF
Honor 50, Now you know the difference between "horizontal stabilizer" and "elevator", and you will impress all your friends with your ability to distinguish the two. You should thank me. (Yes, I'm chuckling here. No offense intended or taken. I get corrected all the time in these forums, and I've been at this for forty years now.) As for the small gap, if the epoxy filled it, it's too small to worry about. The carbon joiner rods take most of the bending loads. Fly and have fun!

RE: NEW H9 P51 Mustang 60 ARF
Honor 50, First of all a nomenclature correction. That's the horizontal stab you are addressing here, not the elevator. I would fill the gap with microballoons and epoxy, and cover it with strips of covering material to hide it. Should be good to go for strength.
