RE: need cg help
The worst flying quickie I ever flew had a positive wing and negative tail.. It didn't matter what I did I couldn't get it to fly right.. It wasn't mine but the guy that owned it told me to take it and fix it or trash it.. I cut off the tail and reset the wing making sure everything was at zero.. Set the CG and it flew pretty well.. Then, promptly midaired with the guy who gave it to me the week before.. Carma I guess.. [;)]

RE: need cg help
I guess I would start looking at the incidence on the firewall, wing and tail.. The center line of the engine doesn't have to be the center line of the fuse as long as it's straight.. Assuming the firewall is only 2.25" square, it can't be that far off anyway..

Not sure about the Johnson's but I'll probably pick some up and try it on the stab mold.. PVA for sure though.

RE: AR-6 Wing mold construction
Not being one to go back on my word, I am sorry to say I am once again attacking a FG wing mold for the AR-6. After learning that my foam core wing construction skills leave much to be desired, I figure a CNC plug and FG mold are the only solution. As Kevin posted above, he did some really top notch CNC plugs out of MDF that I will be finishing and make the mold from. This will ensure a straight and true finished product. Because the steps used are no different than what I've previously posted, I will not bore you all with the filling, sanding, priming, sanding etc and will just show the finished product. Hopefully, without bullet holes this time [8|]

RE: Quick Repair before the Nats !!
Minor correction to my previous post.. The tips are designed at 0 degrees.. However, this wing is at -0.5 degrees. I don't think my thumbs will notice but I thought I better set the record straight.

RE: Quick Repair before the Nats !!
Well, thanks for all the suggestions.. I ended up using Randy's version with a couple mods.. After a couple beers and finally a F**K it attitude I started hacking away. I started by blocking up the wing and making sure where I was at.. I had 2+ degrees of wash in on the left tip.. I also had about .5 of wash in on the right tip.. I figured since I was cutting I might as well fix them both.. Using my zona saw, I cut a diagonal line from the hinge opening on the bottom out to the LE of the wing tip. I then twisted it to where I wanted it and wicked in some foam safe thin CA.. After the smoke cleared, I put in some thick CA and kicked it.. This locked everything in place.. Other than looking like shit I now have both wing tips at .5 degrees of washout, like the original design has.. A little spot putty, some primer and a shot of paint and it's done.. I did end up heating the ailerons and twisting them to line up on the outboard side but they seem to be staying put. Thanks again.. See you in Muncie..

Thanks Barry.. Like I said, it flies pretty good once it's trimmed but I'm trying to make it a respectable showing for this model as I plan on selling some in the future..

Quick Repair before the Nats !!
I posted this on the NMPRA site but thought I might as well post it here too. Ok, so all this work I've been doing on my AR-6 has the prototype ready for next weeks Nats(if you are going, please do not look at the paint job, it might be my worst ever, yes, it's that bad).. However, I have a severe warp in the left side that I can not get straightened out.. I've used the old Lyle trick with the heat gun and for some reason the wing will not set in the new/straight position.. I thought I would solicit any advice from the guys that used to, or still do, run foam core wings.. I had never attempted a Q40 foam wing before and won't again.. Molds are coming soon. If all else fails, I'll fly it with the 1/8" of aileron trim it requires but it would be nice to not have that as it will surely add to the normal crappy times I get in Muncie [8|] The only positive is that I've got a pretty good engine on it and once it's trimmed it seems to groove pretty well. I've got 2 days (including today) to make this repair.. If you've got something quick and dirty, that would be great. Thanks in advance..

I may take it on once I get the AR-6 wing mold done.. I'm doing another fuse mold for the AR-6 this winter to ease the manufacturing.. Other than that I will be without a project and we can't have that..

Instruction will come, just not high on the priority list at the moment. I won't be doing any more until after the nats.. They aren't perfect yet but this was only the 5th one I've done. After the Nats I will finish the wing and tail molds and be offering a full composite kit. Please PM me with any questions regarding the "builder" version. Thanks Scott, can't wait to see how it goes.

That's not far from the truth CP.. When I'm flying a Q40 at the local field everyone asks "how can you fly that?".. I try telling them that they fly great and only go where you point them.. As long as you don't point them at the ground you're ok..[;)]

RE: Battery use info
ORIGINAL: luv to race I have put 17 flights on a Q40.. using the Team Orion 600mah LiFe pack.. ALL ''high voltage'' JR 3711 digital servos, 4 in total.. Maybe 4 or 5 minutes per flight with the radio on, that's a guess of course.. Charged the pack.. Only put about 285mah in the pack. So that was about 16.5mah per flight.. Technically you could fly many more flights.. But that was about my limit [:D] Randy Bridge
Wow, I probably don't get 17 Q40 flights in a year.. If I do, it's not much more than that. I suppose if they would fly with skis on them I could do better [;)] I'm still old school, 1000mAh NiMh packs I build my self.. After a day at the Nat's last year I think I put in about 90-100 mah back in depending on set flights and that sort of think. 9650's on everything but the fuel shut-off.

First of all Gary, I'm a very good shot, it's just that the mold didn't do much with the 9mm, even with 13 rounds thru it.. That's why the 12 gauge came out [;)] Scott, if I have them CNC cut I would have the female cut.. No more mold making for me, well, not wings at least..Probably...maybe.. Let me win Randy? RE: AR-6 Wing mold construction
Well, it's final.. I guess I'm going to find someone with a CNC to cut some molds.. The bottom half of the wing mold is unrepairable.. Especially now.. I had to yell at my dog for trying to retrieve it before I was finished with it.. Yes, I'm a yankee redneck.. I'm still not sure what happened to cause the issues.. Possibly the paint wasn't cured and the solvents broke down the wax.. I guess we'll never know. [link]http://youtu.be/FqY97FZ42AQ[/link]

I was used Part-All on this then some Flex 2.0 release agent I've been using on my fuse layups.. It worked really well on that, not sure what the issue was here.. I think I can make it work, at least well enough to get a plug done.

RE: AR-6 Wing mold construction
Thanks Scott.. The parting board is fine, it's sitting on the workbench in the garage.. However, I may have been a little hasty with my conclusion.. I was able to clean up the top half of the mold and it looks usable, and actually turned out pretty good.. The bottom half is worse off but I may be able to make use of it if I can get it cleaned up. The thing I can't figure out is that I can see the wax under the paint from the plug when I was scraping it off with a old credit card.. I'm still not sure why it stuck so bad.. I may try and dissolve the paint with some lacquer or acetone.. It shouldn't hurt the mold surface other than stripping any of the wax that's left on there.. When I get home from work tonight I'll try that on a small area. Even if I can get it fixed up it's going to take a while to get it ready for use..

RE: AR-6 Wing mold construction
Got up early this morning to pop the mold apart.. The flange area came apart nicely followed by the plug coming apart just as nicely.. The skins of the plug are more glued to the inside of the mold than the foam core they were originally glued to.. That's right, it's all junk.. Hundreds of dollars and countless hours and I haven't got a f'ing thing to show for it.. Sorry to everyone who wasted their time following this thread. I'm not sure what happened just yet.. It was waxed numerous times and I PVA'd what I thought would be the difficult areas and even some of those stuck.. I may try and clean it up but I'm guessing that's a waste of time..[:o]
