Hey Guys, That flight was scary to us imagine what he was going through! I am envious of that flying field, WOW! I fly off a 600' paved strip with water at both ends and many times I used 602' I used clear tape on my gear leg fairings and have no problems at all. Use the good 3M flexible type.

RE: King's K70x owner thread
Guys, I have the k-80e in the X-treme jets BD-5j and have had great luck with so far, (30 flights). The only problem I have had is, every once and a while I will get a glow plug overload reading and it won't start. I cycle it a couple times and it works fine. I have tried a few different plugs with the same results. Other than that the engine has performed above my expectations. I get 8 min. flights with a 90 oz tank. And it pushes the 24lb BD-5 great, in the 160-170mph range. If anyone knows what is causing the overload problem please post. Jim

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
Hey Del, Things are going good. The Dr1 is holding up well, it has been trouble free flying with the exception of the DLE 111. That engine came apart twice and that was enough for me. TBM was great, they gave me a store credit for the full purchase price. I am now flying it with a 3W 75ius. Probably the best running motor I have ever owned and the power is a perfect match to the plane. I have 110+ flights on it with not so much as a loose screw. I have noticed that it can bite you on landing if there is even the slightest cross wind. The wing skids (axe handles) have been put through the test. I put smoke in the DR and it really adds to it. Especially in a spin. Jim

RichardGee, Thanks for the kind words, but mastered? Not even close. Every landing still takes total concentration and they are not all pretty. I have tried different flying wire tensions and prefer them a little on the tight side. When the wires make noise, that is vibration and vibration is an airplanes enemy. I have mine set so that at full throttle they just start to sing. Jim

Hey Richo, Welcome. What are you engine plans? I have the DA 150 and am very happy with the performance, I may go to the 170 when the 150 gets tired. Right now I have well over 200 flights on it and is still going strong. Jim

Hey Guys, I use Pennzoil for air cooled engines for break in. I have used it for 20+ years in countless number of engines and have had great luck. I have nothing against DLE engines, other than the quality control. Finding metal shavings in a new motor is pathetic. And the fact that one cylinder runs lean and the other rich, that is an issue that needs to be addressed before this engine can be a success. Jim

RE: WOW!! New DL 111cc and 55cc !
Hey Guys, The first problem I had with my DLE 111 was taken care of by TBM. When I got the motor back it ran ok for about 5 flights and then it seized, to the point were you could not even turn it over by hand. When I looked in the exhaust port there was massive amounts of debris. Once again I sent it back to TBM, this time I asked if they could just give me a store credit. After they checked the motor out they agreed to a credit. I think the DLE engines are just to new and I have a few thousand dollars and a few hundred hours of labor in my Triplane and its just not worth the risk to save a few bucks. Jim

I thoroughly rinsed it out and oiled it good, but because they are "warrentied" engines, taking it apart could have given them an excuse not to honor it. Jim

RE: WOW!! New DL 111cc and 55cc !
It is hard to tell where the piece may have come from that caused this because there is so many pits in the ports. If you look at the piston close you can see a number of smaller scratches. When I first recieved the motor I could see a few bits of metal inside the cylinder so I pulled them out with a q-tip and then flushed out the cylinders. The other side looks good with only some carbon build-up due to having to run the engine a bit rich to keep the right side from leaning out. The ring is intact so it was most likely a burr. The other side is clean of all debris so I would doubt it was a bearing failure. After I talk to Troy Built I will completely disassemble the engine and look for other causes. Jim

RE: WOW!! New DL 111cc and 55cc !
Hey Guys, A word of caution to DLE 111 owners. My engine has ran ok from the start. Except, since the very first flight the left cylinder (from the cockpit) ran rich and the right, very lean. I assumed the rings would eventually seat. Instead the ring stuck in the right cylinder. Upon inspection i noticed a gouge in the piston and a burr on the cylinder. The castings on these engines are not of the highest quality. In reading these threads, I have noticed a few of you having the same problem, one cylinder running rich and one running lean. If it does not straighten out quickly send it in or inspect it, before it leaves you hangin'. I purchaced the engine at Troy Built and will let you know what they say tomorrow. Here are some pics. Hey Deljon, Thanks, I sure catch hell from the "scale world" with the paint scheme. I did the same thing with my 1/3 scale Gee Bee and that ruffled some feathers as well. I am a commercial artist by trade (signs, murals, etc.) so it is hard for me to resist the temptation of that big blank canvas. especially with the great lines of the DR-1. Jim

Hi Guys, I just maidened my GTM 1/3 DR-1 today and what a hoot. The plane flew outstanding! I chose a DLE 111 for power and Hitec 645 mg's with a 985 mg on the rudder. The best part about the building prosses was checking the c/g when completed. It was right on!! That almost never happens. The engine is powerful but I don't believe too powerful. I flew at about 1/3 to 2/3 throttle. I put a short video on RCU videos. Great build, great flyer, great product. Jim

Must be one or two of you out there somewhere ready to share your adventures. Just a few days ago I put a short video on RCU videos. I am working on a real good video of the GP Gee Bee and the CA Gee Bee. I thought it would be a cool comparison. I am flying the exact same routine with both aircraft. Just trying to find the time to get it completed. Right now I am finishing up a GTM 1/3 scale Dr-1, great kit and a great looking plane. But it ain't no Gee Bee!

Hi Del, I am choosing an engine and was curious how your weight and balance turned out. It is a toss up between a DA 100 and a Zanoah GT 80. The GT is 20 oz heavier and plenty of power but I am a fan of the DA series. Putting this much work into a plane, you want to know the engine is going to keep running. Most of all I would hate to ad lead to the nose.

RE: Composite-Arf 33% Gee Bee R2 - First Flight - Pics - Videos - L@@K
Hey Guys, I have just completed flight #200 and have a few things I have found that you may consider early on to avoid re-inventing the wheel. First is the leading edge of the sub wing where the gear bolts on. There is a patch of carbon fiber on the inside that is suppose to hold the top LE and the bottom LE together. I had a not so perfect landing during a dead stick and the two LE halves on one side popped apart. Upon inspection I noticed that the carbon fiber patch had a very week bond to the glass, when I checked the other side I was able to just pull that patch off with my fingers. So, with both patches off I then re-glassed it with 5 layers of 6 oz glass and have had no problems since, even with a few landings that made that one look like a greaser. Second is the holes in the wing that the flying wire attach bolt goes through. I found it necessary to glue a brass sleeve into it. It keeps the hole from getting sloppy and also keeps the hole vertical. I had mentioned this in a much earlier thread but thought some new guys may have missed it. Third is the bolts in the gear. The gear comes assembled but you will need to take all of the bolts out and blue thread-lock them (clean them good first and then thread-lock the hell out of them) I had two of them come out after threadlocking them the first time. The gear on this plane holds the wing on!!! The last thing is a personal preference issue. I have talked to a few different CA Gee Bee owners who have made hatches where the flying wires attach to the wing. That is a lot of work putting them on and taking them off every time you fly. I cut a slot in the wing just big enough for the fitting to fit into. There is no need for a big hole there. Other than that I have found the Comp Arf Gee Bee to be a very well engineered plane. The 200 flights I inflicted on it were anything but delicate. With my new prop I have been clocked at 151 mph in a very shallow dive. I was also clocked at 128 mph in a straight and level knife edge pass a couple of feet off the deck and hundreds of high G pylon turns. If the plane can hold up to that type of abuse CA did something right. One very satisfied customer. Jim

RichardGee' I just revieved my Hi Flight magazine. Nice job on the review. I have to say I was a little suprised that you left out the part about your dead stick. The handling of a plane in an engine out situation is as important as any other part of it's handling characteristics. The Gee Bee has a glide ratio of about 1 to 1. Well, off to the flying field. Flight # 200 should be made today. Jim

Great job RichardGee. The plane tips up on its wing easy, doesn't it? It has bit me a few times also. But nice landing anyway. Your prop sure does sing when you get into the throttle. That is a 30x12? If so, it seems your DA has more power than some. Mine will just start to rip a 30x12 but yours is tearing the hell out of it. How many flights now? Jim

RE: Composite-Arf 33% Gee Bee R2 - First Flight - Pics - Videos - L@@K
Hi Guys, On the issue of props. I have tried a bunch and my conclusion is that anything other than a 30x12 is spinning your wheels. I run a 28x14 Bolly only because of the sound (has a nice rip at full throttle). I lost a bit of vertical but thats fine, it still has plenty of power. This conclusion came after spending $500 on different sizes and brands of props. Also as I mentioned in an earlier thread, the CA Gee Bee flys better at the 100mph range. Anything over that and you need both hands. I am not sure about aileron reversal in this plane, but I do know that on one occasion just before touch down in a three point attitude, the plane banked 90 deg. the wing contacted the ground and cart-wheeled. Luckily it was on grass that day and only sustained minor damage. If you can call three days work, minor damage. It happened so fast, almost like a snap. When most planes tip stall they fall off to one side or the other. This did not seem to fall. It was like it was it was forced. (MESS WITH THE BULL...) It's good to hear you Guys are still out there. Get some video. Jim

RE: 50cc Reactor
Hey Guys, I am flying my Reactor with a MT 62. (G 62 with EI) It runs great and has alot of power. It turns a 20x10 NX at 7620 and a NX 22x10 at around 7000. The downfall is weight, my plane weighs 18lbs. The plane flys great but I suspect it would be a better all around performer with the intended DA 50. I have just posted a video on RCU. The plane lands very easily and seems to have no bad habbits. It will knife edge like nothing else i have ever flown, slow or fast. As far as 3D, someone else will have to answer your questions. I am for the most part a sport plane pilot. I can say that it hovers with little effort. Jim
