RE: Need propshaft thread size for Moki 1.80
It's a 10 * 1.00 metric. My son and another guy in our club bought true turn spinners for their Mokis and the nuts wouldn't thread on. I measured them and they were the right thread. I re-taped the nuts and they went on fine. The re-taping took out a lot metal. I believe true turn either used a very dull tap or a tap with the incorrect thread angle and depth. The thread is an unusual size and you won't find it in your big box hardware store. More normal is a 10 * 1.25 Denis

RE: Irvine 40 RC
Well to keep the count up I also have the Irvine 40 D. Used it to power a 40 size pattern plane in the early 90s. Not particularly powerful but worked well enough. Used an 11/7 prop. Don't remember the rpm. It was fun to start when the temps were below freezing and the snow flying. I flew it a couple of times while the snow was falling just to say I had done it. Denis

RE: The Snaker
I like it Dave. The reason I bought HurriKane fuselages is because of the tail assembly. This year was a disaster. As a result I have 4 composite HurriKane wings. 2 clean and 2 repaired but only 1 fuselage built. I have 2 HurriKane fus kits and 1 remaining Seeker kit. The Seeker kit will go with a wood wing so I need 1 more. I'll call Carole. Denis

RE: Skinned Hinges
The first couple of times I did skin hinges I used the Dave Norman method verbatim. After that I began simplifying it until my current method. I think it's now easier and quicker than CA hinges. I use .005 sheet glass for both the ailerons and elevator and I don't sand or plane a seat for the glass. I just cut an 1/8in slot in the wing or stab and CA 7/8in wide glass sheet of the appropriate length over the slot. I make my 1/8 slot by cutting a 1/4in slot and then facing off the foam on the aileron and wing with 1/16 balsa. I do that for neatness. Other than that it is unnecessary. Just cut the 1/8in slot and go. On the stab I don't use a foam core so I just cut the 1/8 in slot. I use thick or medium CA and glue about 2 in at a time slowly rolling the glass sheet on. The next step is put in the torque rod seating it in the aileron and wing so that it is flush against the hinge. Minimizes bending when actuating the controls. Do the same on the elevator. My next step is to glass the whole wing with .5 oz glass cloth. I glass the tail when I glass the fus. I glass right over the hinges. I don't cut the aileron ends or elevator ends until the stuff is ready for final paint. This works great for me and I have never had a hinge crack or come loose. On impact the hinge has not failed but has torn loose taking balsa wood with it. Denis

RE: 428 motors
and only with a 9/6 apc prop. There is some flexibility though. A few areas in the US use the OS46 with 10/6 props. But as you can see there has really no comparison been made. The TT40 selection is based on under $100 price and good consistency from unit to unit. The magnum is not in the mix because of poor performance consistency from unit to unit. Denis

RE: Lipo Powered Starter
You're glued together combination of battery and starter won't fit in that bag. You need to take extraordinary and inconvenient safety precautions with that thing. I'll stick with Nicds on my starter and still watch out. Actually the only time I had a problem was a nicd in my portable phone blew up but it didn't start a fire. Denis

RE: Lipo Powered Starter
Ya know, these Lipo batteries are great. But I don't like the idea that I have to set there and babysit every one of them while they are being charged. I got other stuff to do and enjoy. But every safety statement, admonishment says stand by them while charging. I mean what kind of a thing is that? And a guy like Chip Hyde who just lost part of his garage and house because he maybe didn't pay attention for a while. Nope if I don't really, really need one for an electric powered actual plane I don't even want it in my garage. Until I build an ordnance bunker in my back hill I'm leaving them out of the equation. Yes you would have to talk to the speed guys, combat and stunt guys about CS marked engines. But those guys are more critical. A good running, user friendly, durable engine may fall far short of their requirements. Denis

RE: Anyone familiar with CS engines?
I have several CS engines. Replicas, racing and large RC. My largest is about 1.4 ci. A couple of years ago ( for a fun test) I posted a picture of the big one to see if anyone could identify the manufacture. It took awhile and a lot of guessing before someone did. I gave a hint at one point of posting a picture of one of their little .049s that looked like a miniature Rossi. Denis

RE: 428 motors
As I've said before. I test fly all my quickies with a TT40 on a ultra thrust muffler. The engine turns 18.2 to 18.4 on the ground with a apc 9/6. On the stock muffler it turns 17 to 17.2. With a 9/7 it won't get on the final stage on the ground but it goes better in the air. I would guess 140+ at best and flies more like a 428. But it's not fast enough for a replacement for 428. The thrill is not there. It might be good enough for a Matrix filler like me but it's going to bore the guys that can fly. The thrill in quickies with sport 40s and tuned mufflers will be the big bucks chase after the right engine. But that may be all that's left. Oh well Denis

Profi is pretty much not available at the moment. If you can get one or they appear on the shelf it's a good motor, comparable to the Nelson SS. Otherwise get a Jett also seemingly hard to get at the moment. Denis

RE: Brown milky gue from new engine after sitting 2 weeks?
It's water mixed with oil. Condensation happens as the temperature in your garage goes up and down (day to night). If the plane is put away nose down the mixture drains into your engine. It will kill the bearings in a heart beat. This all happens very quickly with a tuned pipe. I won't go through how I discovered this after killing 2 Rossis. If this is the cause you should see small droplets of water in the gue. If you are certain there is no water then see Nicks write up. Denis

That may be but I doubt it. The rpm needed to get a Q40 to do a 1:03 on FAI fuel I doubt could be accomplished with Q500 timing. Denis

RE: BATERY
The problem here Jaka is that both the newer nicads and nimhs are developing a reputation of poor reliability in that more and more people are experiencing poor shelf life of the charge and power charging characteristics i.e. not peak detecting correctly. A lot of us are seeing the charge dropping by half in as little as 2 days on supposedly new high quality batteries. Incorrect peak detecting and poor charge shelf life makes us nervous and sends us looking for something better. Denis

RE: NEW AXE ROSSI 45 ENGINE, 5 PORT, TUNED SILENCER 233R45L
I have the Rossi 45 5 port . Good motor. Much more power than the average sport 45. Heavy about 3 ozs more than sport jett. I don't have a sport jett so I can't compare power. The Rossi is easy to tune and very nice running. But if you just want to go fast with your Diamond dust and use a Rossi get the 53 with the VP mods. I have Rossis 40s, 45s and 53s. They are all good.
