RE: Official XTM Monster MT Thread
I think rclynx and Mr. Terminator both make some good points. rclynx, I recognize you help out a lot of people here and don't want to be disrespectful, but I have to disagree with your position on the MMT. What you say about being a true hobbiest is a good point, but I don't think it justifies overlooking the obvious faults of a RC model with several design flaws, such as the MMT. If a RC truck breaks constantly, chances are it has less to do with the driver and more to do with the quality of design and construction. This truck breaks more than any other RC I've had experience with. -For a truck of its size, the suspension arms are WAYY too small in every dimension...I broke at least five or six of the front arms driving a MT the way one normally would. Compare these to the Savage arms for example and you'll see what I mean. -The front CVD axle issue has been covered here many times...the casting was defective, but XTM continued to distribute them. I give credit to XTM since they sent me a free replacement pair, but I never used them because I converted to the Losi axles and was sick of having downtime due to broken axles every time I took the truck out. -The exposed transmission in the MMT is a HUGE flaw since, after all, this is a RC Truck that is designed to be driven off-road in dirt/mud/gravel etc. All it takes is for a small bit of dirt to enter the adjustment window on the transmission, and it will stop shifting and require complete disassembly to fix. Add that to the fact that the gears wear considerably faster due to the fact that any lubrication applied to them simply attracts EVEN MORE dirt and grime. -The stock tires and tire foam are absolute junk, only usable for off-road and useless for any smooth surface. I think this truck makes for a good on-road experimental vehicle, but honestly it's just too unreliable and poorly built to be consistently FUN. I sold mine and am now thoroughly enjoying a HPI Baja 5b, which I beat twice as hard as the MMT and has broken only once when I accidentally drove it into a concrete structure. A good friend of mine owns a Savage and as he says "beats the bag" out of it regularly also...he's only broken ONE part in over two gallons of running. If XTM were to put a little more thought into their designs and materials, I think they'd have some winning products in the MT category.

RE: Zen 27.2 From O`Neill`s
Hey Guys, Just FYI the Darksoul engines are being assembled by CC Racing Engines with custom porting and use billet cases. The price is steep but from all I've heard so far, as RC engines go, they're well worth the coin. We shall see when they hit the market if that is the case. To the OP- Unless you're running strictly on-road with that Baja you should consider changing out that air filter to a multi-stage oiled foam setup. That K&N filter is lucky to keep mosquitos out of your engine, nevermind dirt and sand. Something like the UNI or GBE foam filters from DDM will work on that velocity stack, or you could always go back to the stock HPI setup which works just as well. Has that Baja ever been outside of the house?? Looks real nice, almost too clean [:D]

RE: Deciding which vehicle to go with. Help!
Out of curiosity, why did you remove the Baja SS from your list? It's just as if not more durable than anything else in your list, can be much faster when modded, has 10x better build quality, and the engine will be hundreds of times more reliable and consistent than nitro. You also can't argue with refueling, even at $4+ per gallon for gasoline compared to $25-$35 per gallon for nitro. There's no need to carry around a stupid roto-start or glow igniter everywhere you go, and you can run for 45 minutes or more on one tank of fuel. The initial cost is higher but they ARE worth every penny. Trust me when I say that you'll have spent the same amount of money or more on your nitro after a year or so, and you'll still have the same little toy truck. There are plenty of nice, upgraded Bajas for sale on a regular basis on eBay and HPIBajaForums.com. Give it a shot. You won't regret it.

RE: questions about savage
CatLover, Here are some important things to consider: -Get something that your local hobby shop carries parts for and is somewhat knowledgable about. It REALLY sucks having to wait for internet orders when you break a simple part. -Balance what you like with practicality, in other words don't get one thing because it's fast, or another because it's huge, etc. -Check out the prices for replacement parts, and availability of hop-up parts for the trucks you choose -Read through this and other forums for information about model-specific issues you'll need to watch out for (every brand/model as a few) -Make sure you add up all the needed accessories to the total price of the truck when price shopping; some trucks come with more accessories than others. Trying to be as unbiased as possible, my opinions: -Traxxas and HPI seem to have the most market penetration in terms of selection and parts availability at hobby shops. -DO NOT get something "just to be different" as there IS a GOOD reason why a mainstream exists in this hobby. People know what works and what doesn't. -Revo=Great race truck, can also be very good for bashing, tons of hop-ups, smallish -Savage=Incredible durability (arguably the best), best for bashing, tons of hop-ups, stock handling not good for racing -LST2=Also a great race truck, comes with an excellent engine and very good suspension, moderate durability, expensive -MGT=Good basher, very overlooked, lots of hop-ups, great price on 4.6 version -XTM Mammoth/Monster MT=Stay away. Overpriced parts with poor availability, outdated designs, need lots of work to be reliable. Before you make up your mind based on how well a truck handles, be sure of your intentions. There's no sense in buying a truck that's race-ready if it's not going to see a race track primarily over the course of its use. A Savage WILL go around a track fairly well, just as a Revo WILL handle the rough stuff...it all depends on what YOU are going to do. If you bash, buy a basher. If you race, buy a racer. If you do both, buy a LST2. Just kidding ;) HTH.

RE: Official XTM Monster MT Thread
@ NitroMMT Go through your user manual and look in the section that talks about adjusting the shift speed on the transmission. On many MMT's, the factory adjustment is for some reason set to a very very high setting, faster than your MMT could ever hope to reach in first gear. If you look at the transmission, there is a slot-shaped opening in the middle between the two gears, located on the backside of the large gear. There are two screws inside there; one of them is a 2.5mm screw which holds the transmission together, and the other is a 2mm set screw which adjusts the transmission shift speed. If you don't see them right away, you may have to hold the large gear still while rotating the trucks wheels backwards, as the inner part of the transmission where these screws are mounted rotates with the drivetrain. Turning the screw clockwise will raise the shift speed, while turning it counter clockwise will lower the shift speed. Try unscrewing it about 1 1/4 turns from where it is now and checking to see if it shifts. If it doesn't and you're sure the engine is tuned well, unscrew it about 1/4 turn at a time until it starts shifting, then make any fine adjustments as needed. Good luck with your MMT.

RE: Fuel help needed......
So, clearly, whatever dye he is using in his homebrew fuel is responsible for all that horsepower! I'm betting it's probably pink... [:)] Nitromethane is an oxidizer, which quite simply means that when burned it introduces more oxygen into the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber. Think of nitro as a chemical supercharger. Without a supercharger, an engine will still run, albeit while making less power. People who run with low or no nitro content in their fuels typically also run higher compression ratios to make up for the loss of power potential. I would say that binaryterror is doing quite well with his engine all things considered.

CPU Thermal Compound on Cooling Head?
Hey guys, I have a whole tube of Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound which is used for mating computer processors with heatsinks for optimizing heat transfer. I build computers on the side and work in IT so needless to say I'm awfully familiar with how much it helps the heatsink do its job. My question is: Has anyone ever used this or a similar compound in between the head button and cooling head to optimize heat transfer away from the engine? I just received a Nova RC cooling head for my brand new XTM 457 and was thinking of trying this before mounting the engine to the truck for break-in. Let me know what you think, and regards. -Dom

RE: One or two steering servos?
Guys, thanks for your suggestions. I ended up ordering a single JR Z9100T and will give that a try once it comes in. I think that moving to a single GOOD servo is the best bet since it provides the same torque as the two that came stock, has a much faster transit time, and will draw less power. I'll let you know how it works out.

RE: One or two steering servos?
Thanks for the reply ThermalRD. I haven't read a bunch about the Z650M, but it's good to know they do have some sort of reputation (in this case bad). I'll be sure to steer clear of those. I hope the Z590 I'm using for throttle/brake isn't as unreliable...hopefully the failsafe will keep things from going too awry if that is the case. The radio I was using before was the kit radio that comes with the MMT, a Cirrus C3FM (3-channel FM). It had no special hi-speed or framerate functions that I know of, and I did test the steering servos plugged into the new setup without the throttle servo installed - the twitching was present with or without the throttle servo installed. That Monster Pow'r Pak you mentioned looks like a good buy, though I'd probably just use both of those for the steering...unless you think one would suffice. At that price, I would consider other options to save a few dollars...such as the Ace R/C DS1015's I've heard many good things about. It looks like this is going to cost the better part of $200 either way [&o] Thanks again, -Dom

One or two steering servos?
I am going to need to replace the two steering servos in my XTM Monster MT soon, since the stock ones are twitching pretty badly. I've localized the cause of the twitching to the servos themselves, since I just swapped over to a JR XS3 Pro radio and the condition did not change. I'll need around 300-400oz/in of torque to turn the tires well (40 series Big Joes, 15lb truck). The two options I'm looking at now are: Two JR Z650M servos installed in stock locations or One JR Z9100T servo installed in one of the two stock locations I can see already that a drawback to running a single high-torque servo is that I'll probably have to upgrade one of the servo savers to the aluminum hop-up part to handle all that torque being fed through one connection. This would cost another $40.00 for one servo, and double that for two. Your opinions are welcome...thanks. -Dom Here is a picture of the stock setup, albeit with the upgraded servo savers and carbon steering link. RE: XTM Mammoth RTR Monster Truck
Dude, did you read what I wrote in your other thread? The Mammoth is a waste of money, honestly. It needs a LOT of upgrades to be durable enough for serious bashing. If all you're going to do with it is go up and down the street, then you'll probably be alright. However, believe me when I say that you will become bored quickly. MMT FTW...

RE: what is the best rc car to go 70+ and jump hight
What's the sense in even recommending he go with a Mammoth when the MMT is within his price range and very clearly superior?? Brickman324, A few of the other guys have posted and made some good recommendations. Theirs are justified by their experiences, and so I'll make one based on mine. I have a XTM Monster MT, which is fairly new to the market and can be found for $400.00-$450.00 depending on where you shop. HobbyPeople (www.hobbypeople.net) has them for $449.99 right now, although the hobby shops around me that carry XTM still sell them for $409ish. I was new to this hobby when I purchased the truck, and so many of the frustrating issues I had were due to my unfamiliarity with the quirks of Nitro R/C rather than shortcomings of the truck itself. When I spent more time with the truck and read/posted here and elsewhere, I started to enjoy the truck MUCH more. As I said above, with this truck out there is absolutely no reason to buy a Mammoth ST unless you absolutely cannot spend the extra money on the MMT. The MMT has a better chassis, suspension, engine, drivetrain, and electronics setup. It comes with two metal-geared steering servos and so you will NOT have issues with the steering unline many of the RTR kits on the market...it will turn both (HUGE) front tires lock to lock standing still on carpet. The SH .28 engine is a screamer, and with the gearing of this truck you absolutely will see it get to 40+ MPH when it's tuned properly. Where the Mammoth ST has plastic spur gears, the MMT has two solid metal gears which are very difficult to strip unless they're improperly adjusted (they come properly adjusted out of the box, no need to worry). The differentials are VERY durable especially for a truck of this size, as is most of the drivetrain. I have had a few issues with the front CVD drivshafts, but you can replace those with some from a Losi LST if you do have issues. This is a GREAT truck for jumping since it has so much ground clearance and a lot of suspension travel. There are plenty of videos of this truck on YouTube, so check it out. The XTM SureStart electric starter retails for $40.00, and it will cost you about another $20.00 to purchase a battery for it. It's a nice kit, but the pull start works well enough so long as you don't abuse it. Here are some other threads about this truck: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7029961/tm.htm http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7168777/tm.htm http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5713335/mpage_1/key_monster/tm.htm Just take everyone's opinion with a grain of salt when you're reading that third link, because that thread is from when the truck was new and there are several comments in there from people who didn't even own the truck. Either way you decide to go, good luck with your purchase. -Dom

Compagnucci Gas-Powered Mini Cooper - Interest?
Hey all, I recently found a local source of these cars...about a dozen of them all with the Mini Cooper body. They're sweet little cars with a two-stroke 6.28cc gasoline engine, completely RTR with radio, servos, batteries, clear body, fast charger, and even a transport bag that holds everything. I am NOT looking to sell them in this thread, just wondering if anyone would be interested in purchasing them at a lower price than what appears to be current retail. If there is interest, then I will proceed to list them here in the classified area or arrange for private payment. Depending on what I can get them for, I'd like to sell them for $450 shipped to anywhere in the U.S. Again, I am NOT selling them right now, this is just a figure to determine interest. I do not want to put these on sale here or on eBay if there is no interest. Here is some additional information, from a retailer's website: http://www.mecoa.com/compagnucci/index.htm -Dom

RE: Official XTM Monster MT Thread
Hey guys, Is it me, or are a lot of the XTM hop-ups for the MMT a little overpriced relative to other MT brands? For example, it would cost you $149.88 to "upgrade" to the 3.5mm shaft shocks...the price jumps to $205.84 if you include the Alum. ball ends. Also, the aluminum suspension holders/plates are insanely expensive...$20-$27 for parts that are the size of my pinky finger!! I know CNC machining is expensive, but shouldn't the cost come down due to mass production? Personally, I wouldn't upgrade any individual suspension component to aluminum on this truck unless everything was aluminum. Here's a good one - the Suspension Holder Support #149994, which is literally maybe 2.5" long and 1/4" thick...$20.00 for ONE in 7075! Holy shit! Here's another one...Universal joint dust boots...a set of four is $10.00!! I got a set for my truck and honestly, the quality is not worth $1.00. They constantly slide off the axle and tear very easily. In comparison, Traxxas CVD rebuild kits come with the rebuild hardware AND four dust boots of immensely greater quality for $7.00. I'm also wondering if these prices are so high because HobbyPeople is the sole (internet) proprietor of XTM parts. The single solitary LHS around me that carries XTM stuff also sells at full retail (although the owner is a great guy and I don't mind paying him the money as opposed to HobbyPeople). Creative Hobbies in Mendon, MA FYI. I know I'm just hurting my credibility here by bellyaching about it, but you guys have a look and tell me what you think: http://www.hobbypeople.net/hopup/145621.asp For the record, the hop-ups I've purchased so far are the Failsafe, CVD boots, switch covers (don't get red...they're pink!), front and rear sway bars, and the 7075 steering hubs. -Dom

Hey all, Since the thread I started previously with the subject "XTM Monster MT - First Impressions" is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, I figured that it would only be fitting if the MMT had it's own official thread alongside all the other great trucks discussed here. This way, we can consolidate all of the discussion about this truck into one place so there aren't too many repetitive posts or threads. To start us off, I have included a pic of my MMT with brand new Pro-Line 40 Series Cheyenne wheels and Big Joe tires. Enjoy!

K-OS, I've found that unless the outside ambient temperature is at least 40*F (+4.4*C) I have issues keeping my XTM/SH .28 tuned and running consistently well...the weather is simply too cool to allow the engine to reach proper operating temperature. I've heard of others wrapping the cooling head with socks or aluminum foil for insulation, and though I haven't tried this personally the general impression I got was that it helped in very cold temps.

RE: Bad Horsie Shock Sox - Opinions?
wave waker, I got mine with very very little use from eBay for about $350. A friend of mine got his brand new from a LHS for $400, though after tax and the bare minimum setup items he paid closer to $520 if I remember correctly. If you do want to buy one, my advice to you is to make sure that at least one hobby shop that's reasonably close to you stocks parts. Depending on what part of the country you live in, waiting for parts to come in from HobbyPeople in California can cause a lot of downtime if/when you do break something. BuzzBomber, Thanks for the input. I was hoping that they would be cheap insurance against premature shock wear. I know there are washing instructions on their website, but how did you go about washing yours? Also, if you have washed them, do they still look as nice after they're washed once or twice?

RE: XTM Monster MT First Impressions
Freddy, My MMT steering servos (stock) glitch all day long, but I haven't had any "runaway" issues as of yet...on that note, spending the $20 bucks on the XTM failsafe would definitely be a good idea unless you want to spend double that on replacement parts when it runs into a wall [:D] Just as an FYI, but the stock radio is actually FM and is said to be pretty decent for a RTR compared to many MT setups on the market. Perhaps yours is another bad sample that somehow made it past QC? What did you end up getting for a radio? I'd like to replace the Cirrus stuff at some point but just spent $125 on wheels and tires to replace the JUNK that the truck comes with. As for the starting issues, the thing that stuck out the most to me when mine was new was that this .28 engine has TONS of pinch before it's fully broken in and you really really need to be careful when starting it up for the first gallon or so. My advice to you would be to try warming up the engine before starting it for the first time...I know you said you're not a newbie but this made worlds of difference for me. Isn't it funny how hearing the thing finally running well makes you forget all the frustration?

Losi LST CVD Shafts on XTM MMT = Direct Replacement
Hey all, I've been doing some homework trying to figure out what parts manufactured by other brands are compatible with my MMT, since only one LHS actually carries XTM parts. Today, while visiting the Ashland, MA HobbyTown USA, I verified that the CVD axle shafts for the Losi LST (original) are directly compatible with the XTM CVD axles on the MMT. This is good news because XTM only sells the CVDs as complete kits at $42.00/pair, whereas the Losi shafts are $12.00/pair...add another $7.00 if you need a rebuild kit. I also purchased the shafts for the LST2 because they're made of much better material than the MMT or LST shafts, but unfortunately the ball end is just slightly too large to fit into the MMT axle shaft. I plan to return to the store tomorrow and purchase the Losi axles to verify if they work in this application as well. If so, then I believe these would be the best alternative for MMT owners who have experienced frequent breakage of the CVD shaft. The Losi LST F/R Drive Shaft is Losi PN# LOSB3502 and can be used with the XTM 1/8 rebuild kit and axles. I hope this is as helpful to all you MMT owners as it is to me! -Dom

I was afraid of sticker shock at first because of having to buy the Pro-Line 23mm hubs as well, but I'm going to try the hubs from a GST which seem like they'll work...just scored a set of 4 on eBay for $12.00 - better than $32 for the Pro-Lines! I really liked the idea of bead-locks, but the price is pushing it for what I wanted to spend and they're also heavier than the standard wheels. Overall, I'm happy with this choice so far. When they come from AMain sometime next week, I'll report back with the results... -Dom

RE: Opinions on this Wheel/Tire Combo
PatrickBW, Thanks for your input. I would have responded sooner, but for some reason your reply didn't actually show until today even though it said it should be there...strange. Why do you say that about the Axial beadlocks...I was considering them until you mentioned that. The Big Joes might be a bit small for my truck but I think they'll be right on par performance-wise. rclynx, That's a pretty sweet combo! The only reason I'm ruling out going with a 23mm setup is because I would still like to keep my spare set of MMT wheels/tires "just in case" and if I did need to mount them I'd hate to have to switch the hub every time. However, I have not totally ruled them out [:D] Thanks for the heads up...the site looks great! -Dom
