RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello; Starting a stiff new 150 can be quite a task; I have had success with a normal starter if you start with the carb closed, and as it's spinning open the throttle. That way things ca get a bit of inertia happening before the mixture is introduced. Two weeks ago I had a new 150 on a bench mount, I had a huge 16 x 8 prop on it, no spinner just the prop nut. It would kick on the back flip but not catch. My starter would stall when it came up on compression unless the carb was closed, then it would spin around 3000 rpm - - aha! Try for yourself, you already have all the equipment needed

RE: Aero .35 Does anyone remember it?
Hello; 5 or 6 yewars ago, a fellow from our field found an aero 35 at a garage sale. He bought it for $5., I took it home to look it over, and dis-assembled it to see how it works. Mike sold the engine for over $1200. to someone in connecticut. I don't think it wasw Ebay, likely he sold it here on RCU. Amazing engine, it had a little wear on it, but nothing serious. I didn't run it or later hear it run. Funny that this should come up now, as just last Sunday we were talking about it. None of the new guys had any idea about it at all.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello; I watched a fellow, at our field, assemble his plane, a decathlon, fill the tank, range check the rtadio, then connect the glow driver and had the engine start withour touching it. He had flipped it over a few times to be sure that the fuel was getting to the carb, but I didn't noticed him setting the prop in any certain position. He was standing over the plane and just put the glow driver on, and it started all by itself. This particular engine was an OS 91 surpass. I've never seen a Saito do that! We were all amazed to see that happen! He treid again and again to do it, but it just wouldn't go unless the prop was flipped. After seeing that, everyone was shocked and amazed.

RE: what engine for spacewalker2
Hello; My spacewalker has a Saito 120s in it. It'll do any maneuver I can think of, takes off from our grass field in 25 feet. It won't hover, but I have electric planes for that. I don't understand why people insist on putting huge engines in perfectly lovely planes. We fly at sea level here on the coast. But - - - it's a hobby, and if it makes you smile, go ahead and put any engine you like in there, and have fun.

RE: saito 100T
Hello Bryston; I run my 110t with the pump, no problems so far (6 years), the idea is to force the blow-by oil through the engine, but it sems to all run out the left exhaust pipe. It doesn't seem to do anything. I tried to blow into the air line that runs into the back cover, to see if it helped to get the oil to pass through the bearings. Didn't see any difference one way or the other. I looked but I can't find any pictures of it running.

RE: Club Laser?
Hello Raymac; Thanks for your suggestion, that looks like what I'm after. I tried Lord mounts but they allow too much vibes in the shear direction for me to feel happy about them. I have the Gator soft mount on my 100 on the Taube, and like the design, it lookis to me as though it was designed with the Laser in mind, with the long beams. Too bad they're out of stock. By the way; I saw your storch the the littlest, WOW, that's beautiful. Does it fly as sweetly as it looks? Is that a 200 twin in it?

RE: Club Laser?
Hello; I ordered a Laser 70, recieved order confirmation the next day, then the following saturday I recieved a shipping notice, then the following Monday I recieved it. All the way to the west coast of Canada in two days. I'm very pleased with the quick (for these days) service. I want to rubber mount this engine, but the Dubro mounts I prefer aren't long enough to suit the long mounting beams the Laser has. I mounted my last Laser, a 100 on a cactus aviation flexible mount, but I doubt that I'll be able to find one of those. I am willing to Lord mount a regular engine mount to the firewall, but I'm having a tough time finding a commercially available mount that will work without sawing it into two pieces. What would you do?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello Raven; I use shrinking wire insulation for the bottom of the push rod tubes, and regular o-rings for the top. Any auto parts store (that's any good) will have a huge o-ring kit that you can search through. I usually cut my own gaskets, you can use newspaper, wax paper, or thin card stock, or most anything you have around. I just went for a look, and I have 4 45s,3 50s, 1 40, 1 56, and 1 62.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello; I have all those 40/45/50/56/62 Saitos. I built a little bracket out of a piece of the cutter strip on a wax paper roller, I can'ty find the picture, but basically, it is a broad triangle with a bend in it to span the two back (top) cover screws. For me the Saito 45 was the first functional trustworthy engine that came to me. I think I must own the most neglected one on the planet, I donated it to our club trainer and over the years, I replaced all but four of five parts. Two cases four cranks, three cams, five intake pipes. It is the only engine (glow) that I have seen with a hole in the piston. It still runs great. I have a 45S that I bought from a fellow in Englend, It came NIB so I haven't run it. It looks like a 45 with a 50's carb and pipe. I have bought and sold many of these engines, and despite all the abuse, I've never seen a bad one. I've run many 50's too, they're great too.

Ace T 34 Sport kit
Hello; I picked up an old (84) kit complete $25 It is a foam wing, built up fuselage . I'm just about finished my 4*60, so the T 34 will be next. I wonder if there is anyone out there with memories of this plane, that might have some hints or tips before I vegin. The instructions call for spray adhesive to sheet the foam cores, it's a new process for me, but I'll try it. If I feel so motivated, I might post a pictorial on the build, don't hold me to it though.

RE: skyward 40
Hello; My first airplane was a Skyward in '91. I didin't know anyone around here who could fly so I had to teach myself with it. I got in one good flight, not the prettiest landing, but I got it down unharmed. The second flight I hit a curb when I didn't quite get it up high enough to clear it. I fixed that plane many times after that, mostly by putting the broken parts together and saturating the whole mess with CA. As the Skyward was an ARF, there were no plans with it. Slyward went out of business before I bought mine, so don't expect much help from them. I still have the fuselage around here somewhere, I wouldn't use it though since it's been fixed so many times it's too heavy now. But it was a good beginner plane.

RE: Radar speed traps
Hello; Ten or Twelve years ago there was a Local fellow that came to our flying field to watch the fun, he was the boss of one of the local communities police detatchments. He brought our the radar and set himself up on the far side of the strip, and invitted one and all to see how fast their planes are. We started pointing at him from about 3000 feet, full throttle straight down at him. I couldn't believe that he would stand there with all those competetive guys going as fast as they could make them go, then testing tyheir wing spars strength. My GB Extra was the fastest plane that day at 103 mph, my Midwest Suhkoi was third at 100 mph, pretty fast eh? The fellow got transferred out of the area, but it couldn't have been much fun for him.

Hello; Check that the glow plug is tight enough, What else could it be? Get yourself a new OS "F" plug for it. You might have run it so lean that you fried the plug in just one run. It's one of my favorite engines, mine runs great, Oh , Don't pull your hair out, we're doing this for FUN, remember. Saito club member no. 12

RE: OS 91 4C
Hello; It sounds like an OS 91 is a good engine to stay away from, judging from all these posts. I have had 2 surpass 91's, both the first generation, both were wonderful engines, smooth, powerful, and trouble free, but since they're "older" they no longer deserve consideration. Besides, the newer ones gave 300 revs on top. I look for the oldest engines from OS before I'd buy a new one, why? The prices for OS engines here are so much higher then all the rest, and the quality has gone down hill srteadily, all their "improvements" have caused problems, or will cause problems later in it's life. Who needs problem engines? There are lots of engine makers competing for your hobby dollar that don't have these problems. What makes people so loyal to OS? I'll never understand. Oh, one more thing; Why does the 9! bend push rods when the smaller and larger ones don't? They also break valve springs spontaneously. I'm sticking with Saito.

RE: Airspeed AS 31
Hello; Thursday evening I took the Airspeed out to our field all charged up, I had a tough time getting the GMS 47 running reliably, it seemed when I fueled it up that fuel was running out the exhaust about as fast as I could pump it in. After lots of stick twiddling Me and Mike got itrunning with enough power and a sort of' low idle, so we walked ot out and advanced the throttle. As soon as the wheels left the ground the engine sagged, so I let it back down and the engine cleared and revved up again, so I let it rise slowly while gaining ground speed. After I had it 6 feet high, I felt that I'd better turn soon. I turned it left with the rudder, as it seemed close to the trees at the end of our field. I turned gracefully and was coming towards us when the engine quit I was only 50 feet high, but I managed to get her lined up for a down wind landing, just about over the end of the runway when at about 5 foot altitude, it just stoped flying and crunched down tail first. I walked out to pick it up. It was in one piece but both pylons were broken in two places. I'm thinkiong that I'll replace the pylons with aluminum spars cut from an old lawn chair. I realise that I stalled it, but first flight, I couldn't have known to expect that the tail would just fall on the stall. Never seen that before. I'll fix her up and keep her scale, she'll fly again.

RE: Club Enya
Hello; Yes, Just like that. The only picture I can find right now is this one, I don't know if it shows the right side (left side) or not. Now that I have been running these engines for a few days, I realise that the original owner must have lost the carb mount screw and just put a small 4-40 screw with a blind nut on the other side to hold it on. Thanks for the help.

RE: Re: Welcome to Club Saito
Hello Arnie; Guess who this is? I have been breaking in a new pair of Enya 80's on my break in stand this week. What I use is a Workmate stand and a 1 x 4 that I cut to cradle the engine. screw or bolt the engine to the opening and hang the engine out the end of the workmate and clamp it down tight. I usually elastic band the tank to the stand and use sponge to set it on. A Saito 115 eh? you must have a plane in mind for it. Have you given up on Helis?

RE: Club Enya
Hello; I have two Enya 80's, and have been running one for a four star sixty i'm just completing. The engine ran rough until I tightened the carb down a bit, and leaned teh ilde out a bit, then I noticed a fuel leak from the pipe the needle screws into. The engine was running better and better but the wood screws were backing out and it was shaking a bit. I tightened the carb down and checked the valve clearance, even though the enbgine was hot, it was about .012 on both. Now to the question.. The carb is bolted to an extended edge of the cam box. One engine has the head of the screw to the left and the other has the head towards the right with a nut on the other end. Which way is right?

RE: Four star sixty, any modification ideas to make it a better plane
Hello; I ran into a problem with the wing dowells, I assembled the wing as tight as possible and now the wing dowells are spaced wider apart then the holes they have to go into. I glued the tow wing panels before I checked the fit. Now I suspect that everyone who attempts to build this plane will have this problem, since I (od course) built it perfectly. Sig doesn't mention this possibliity in the instructions, or how to fix it. I guess I'll just move the holes outward or apart bu about a quarter of an inch to make it all line up. Why has no one else noticed this and reported it on RCU?

Four star sixty, any modification ideas to make it a better plane
Hello; I'm just getting around to building a yellow FS 60. The last FS 60 I had lived a pretty tough life, but it lasted 6 years before the many repairs made it too heavy to be much fun. I cut the virtical stab to make an air balance and to give the rudder more authority. I also put in a Sullivan tail wheel when the original fell out. I used an old OS 90 FS for the last 5 years, but I think I'll put an Enya 80 FS into it. It'll be a problem getting the Dubro soft mount in there without blocking the throttle, but I think I can make it all work. I just wonder if anyone has come up with modifications that have to be done at the beginning of the build that make a better flying plane, or any ideas at all.

RE: Which engine? Goldberg Cub
Hello; My friend Al has a GB cub on floats with a Saito 80 in it that is just perfect. He tried an OS 48 FS, not enough to get it off the water. Then he tried a GMS 61 two stroke, plenty of power but wrong sound, so I lent him a Saito 80, and he was sold, and went out and bought one for his cub and now thinks it's perfect.

RE: Airspeed AS 31
Hello; What a surprise! Bill Bond called me up and told me to not go to the lake by motorcycle yesterday, as he had something for me to take home. It was his Airspeed AS 31. He said that he needed to ckean out his gaqrage/airplane factory, and I was the best candidate for the AS 31. It has a channel 59 crystal in it, so I will have to find a tx crystal on that channel or else put a rx of my own in it. It comes complete with a GWS 46, but he built everything into the fuselage then closed it all off with the firewall which is held on with epoxy, so I might have to cut a hatch in it to get it going.

RE: What engine should i put in my Kadet?
Hello; I learned the most from a Kadet with an old Saito 45. I know that no one would recommend that combination nowadays, but if I had one today, I'd fly it a lot. I have had success with OS'FP range but not the LA's. I have a pair of TT 46's that have never failed me, more power then you'll need though. A new fellow is flying at our field, he tried an RV4, soon crashed it, he tried a Decathlon, but crashed it. Someone offered him an ARF Kadet cheap with a Saito 65,m which he bought and now flies all the time. He loves th agility and the low speed ability of the big Saito. We have tamed him down a bit, so he'll stop crashing his planes, but he's having a great time with it, and learining how to fly properly.
