RE: New liquid cooled gas aero engine !
ORIGINAL: numancia Having wrestled with designing an efficient air cooling system for my Hawker Hurricane with an inline two stroke gas engine in the cowl, I welcome the MVVS innovation. As previous members have said weight is generaly NOT a factor where warbirds are concerned and the tight cowls make for quite difficult air cooling. Having the ability to use a radiator in the scale location makes me drip with anticipation! Numancia.
You know what this is and you can see what is inside it. I am taking a rest from modelling right now but I can give you a place where to get the supplies and the conversion for the clark should be pretty simple for a decent welder. If you are interested drop me a line.

RE: P51 Gear door 12fg
I do that with my p-51 with my Futaba 14mz. If the programming is similar then it is fairly easy. it is done by putting a delay on the doors and gear. The main doors are also on a curve with the start of the curve and the end aon the same position. That means the doors open wait for the lay and close. All servos are put on the same switch. good luck Paul

RE: Byron Ryan ST-A
Bill, I hope you build the ryan. I love the plane and byrons is a solid kit. I am not sure which mount came with the Ryan since it is a long time since i opened one up. I think though, that Steve Thomas over at Bobs Hobbies had a bunch of Byron stuff. He bought a big box of mounts and mufflers a year or too back and I think he still has a lot. The best Ryan i saw I think had a g-38 on it but I thought the owner mounted it to the firewall. I have a couple of bent purrpower units but they are for the big and small sachs, so won't work for you. Good luck anyway. By the way which engine are you planning on? good luck Paul

Funny stuff. Peaceful protest, I love it. this is one of my favourite threads for a while. 1/ nightwalker , displeased about about not being able to join in conversations immediately, uses his intelligence to quietly and humorously make his point. causes the moderators to do what they said they would. No big deal as long as he wasn't wild out flaming anyone or any other big no no. . Very entertaining. 2/ Falconwings thinks that the said peaceful use of your intelligence is reason for grounding by the FAA, now that is freaking sidesplitting. really way too intense. 3/ Johnny still posting 7 months after going into holding pattern,, BEAUTIFUL dude. I dont know what agency, natural or supernatural made that possible but keep on Johnny. Made me think about him and smile anyway. good times guys, good times.

Don't know if it is he weather, the spin of the earth or what. But my 800 does the same just recently, and almost all the time. i just have to leave the gas hooked up and increase the gas a little till the turbine ramps up. The same as yours it starts to hang around 30,000. it seems to be going ok and lit on gas but not enough to keep going. Manually adding gas works everytime now. good luck Paul

RE: CG - easy way to check and adjust
I don'tknow if the first wife story is true, but I have used the Vanessa for many years.Iit is slightly different in design but works the same way. I have a picture on RCU balancing my 53 pound Mustang, no problem. It is still the most accurate way in my opinion. there are build instructions at the same site I got it from on here maybe 10 years ago. http://home.mindspring.com/~the-plumber/Vanessa%20CG%20Machine.htm Dash's design looks good too and a little simpler. I think the original may have a slightly tighter levelling adjustment, but I wouldn't see that as a problem except on heavier planes. My setup is on a rope and pulley in my garage. I set the plane under it, hook up the sling and haul away. good to see your setup Dash. Paul

looked and sounded like his engine popped out for a sec. one did it when I was stationed in Belize but better results as it was a vertical drop. had to tow it out. Bet the pilot was sore after such a short drop, that was a max few hundred feet , hardly enough time to catch air.

When you get into bigger planes use two packs. Two 2000 4.8 packs are a thousand times safer than one pack. I have two packs in all my planes. 6volt packs are fine. I dont use them anymore but that is a personal choice. i use 4.8 packs in all my planes not matter what size but always multiple packs for redundancy. good luck Paul

RE: Best semi-pro camera for filming jets ?
New stabilisation systems are great. My sony alpha gives me as much as a 3 stops speedadvantage. nevertheless, when I am shooting rc planes at high zoom lengths, I still need to go to some form of support. You will help with a simple monopod, get a cheap one with a tilt head and try that before you go crazy on new equipment. On the other hand, if you are like me, you just need an excuse to get a new bells and whistles camera, and i dont blame you then go for it. The steadycam is a nice setup but a good shoulder mount will probably be the best for what you need right now. . Seriously though, good support is as important as anything else and will also help you to keep your target in the centre of the viewfinder much better. All helping you to get more useable footage. extreme zoom lengths test all cameras and they need more support and smoother inputs when shooting high focal lengths at distant objects, throw in fast moving and extremely light and small cameras and they become absolutely essential for quality footage. I would try a small monopod with a tilt head to start with, I must say i like the idea of the steddiepod ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/560422-REG/Barber_Tech_SP1_SP1_STEDDIEPOD_Camera_Stabilizer.html ) but i haven't seen one up close. good luck Paul

RE: 3W Fuel Tank Set Up (Need Help)
You're right about defueling Pete. it used to bother me until I realised i wasn't flying glow anymore, gasoline isnt Hygroscopic like methanol ( though the 10% ethanol is but inconsequential )so it isnt really as important. the thing is with gas engines you dont need to completely defuel. a little helps if you keep it sealed. I just finish flying and plug the breather vent when I am storing or transporting. I do however have a huge remove before flying flag on my breather vent to stop me trying to fill the plane when it is plugged up. ask me how many times I have screwed up before I put the flag on. I do however use the slimline filler setup. No matter which system you prefer, more important than anything is making sure of good seals and clean practices, and in my opinion always a filter in the last line into the carb. (the 3 line system uses the felt filter on the clunk)

RE: 3W Fuel Tank Set Up (Need Help)
On all my gas planes I use a three line setup. The benefits are simple. I use a felt filtered clunk on my supply line to the carb, this line always has fuel in it as it does not empty during defueling as in a two line setup. This makes priming the engine easier next flight and can keep the carb diaphragm from drying out. Fuel to the carburettor is always filtered between the tank and carb, giving protection whether contaminants come from inside the tank (flashing or other plastic) from poor fueling practice( grit or dust even on a filtered filler plug) or sucked in through the overflow/breather tube (more common than most realise). It also has two less breaks in the supply line than a two line setup reducing fuel leaking out and air sucking in problems. The disadvantage of using a two line setup is that you have to empty the supply line when defueling and have a leak point in your filler plug. The most common problem i have seen with glow or gas with two line systems has always come from filler valves. They stick open and let in air bubbles causing the engine to run lean causing problems from bad tuning to burning out an engine. if i cant see the fuel lines on my plane I would never use one as I want to make sure air bubbles are not getting sucked in. If you need to use a two line system then a simple T and line plug is far better than the dubro valve. I used them for years and forgave them many problems just because they seemed a simpler method of fueling. When I stopped using them I got rid of the majority of my fuel system problems. If you need to use two line then use a simple filler and make sure you add a filter between the fill valve and the carb. good luck Paul

Still here. i got caught up in things so my buddy is building it for me and I am building the Hurricane. I am working on the cooling issues. I even have everything I need to water cool the engine with not too difficult modifications if things don't work out. I hope we get to fly together sometime. RE: Future of the Scalemasters?
I read your ideas Dennis and disagree wholeheartedly with all but the landing gear deal. I have flown in Top gun for the last three years and just received my invite for next years, and though I fly ww2 planes I have not taken the landing gear as a manouver yet. Maybe this year but it is my choice. Most judges I have seen at any event, from scale to combat and pylon etc. have being very conscientious and I am sorry to say that a lot of your points seem to come in my view from the sour grapes that I hear all the time in competition. There is always someone whingeing about this isn't fair or that isn't. I think Mels ideas are a thousand times worse though. Reducing scale competition into a kindergarten event, before we know it we will be giving everyone an award , "just because they tried " so as not to make them feel bad. Harris would be turning in his grave. I do see how the USSMA has dropped a little but check out Top Gun last year. The economy caused a lot of no shows, Frank however works hard to overcome it and still make a success. The biggest problem though is, I never hear about the ussma events. They are not promoted enough and newcomers are not told how easy and fun it is to start in it. I do think having the masters in one place could stifle the idea of it being for the whole USA but i think picking two places one on the east and one on the west coast and sticking with the same venues alternating years. Who knows. I am not an Old fogey who is stuck in his ways, I only four years into competing and just disagree with your ideas. By the way, I am going to a wmwa fly in tommorrow and called my buddy to see if he was going. He is busy so maybe next week in ocala he says. Maybe, ,, and then he asks if i am going to the Corvin Miller event,. I didnt even know it was on. I think that is a problem everywhere. it is not just the USSMA's problem, it is mine too. I have become lax in finding out about events, yet one of Mels ideas is fair about making contact. i think all registered scale buffs could be notified by mail or email. i think if the USSMA posted on here and rquested an email adress for all scale afficionados and did the same on all the other sites. we could be kept informed and i think that would go a long way to boosting the attendance. good luck Paul
ORIGINAL: maddog-RCU Interesting concept, but how do you access the bolt once the wing is completed? With the Byron set up it's 2 small hole under the wing; I'm not sure how yours would work because as I see it you would have to access your bolt through the leading or trailing edge of the wing. More info please.
Access is through wheel bays. you can even do it on the Byron corsair. good luck Paul

RE: Ziroli 124
These are mine for the 120 inch Hurricane. they are light and effective. The joiners are 1.5 inch by .2 inch about. The receiver is molded around it. After fitting, a hole is drilled through the receiver, through the joiner and through the spar and a captive bolt is fitted. That stops the wing sliding out and also clamps the joiner to the main spar. Drilling through the joiner is better than the Byron setup where you tap through the channel as the joiner gradually deforms and the wing fitting changes after a few flights. Even with your setup it would be better. good luck Paul
