RE: using a socket set swivel as a u-joint? Anybody done it?
ORIGINAL: Bob-Stormer
ORIGINAL: QSPSB2 Geeze! $43 to $70 is big money to you? Sorry to hear that
I was mostly refferenceing the link that showed the cheapest single joint on the page at $211us. That's one u-joint. That's to much. Especially if you need 4. or in the case of a 4wd vehicle, 8 of them. That's nearly $1700 for u-joints...just little bitty u-joints... I feel in a ''do it yourself'' or handemade forum, the interest is more in being clever than just buying your way out of it. (4) of those u-joints at $211 each is still about $850. I bought a brand new 1/2'' swivel adaptors today for $6.45 each. Now THAT is interesting. can it be made to work? Just like the windshield wiper servo, compared to spending $550-$600 on a tone servo. It's not so much about the money, as the being clever and the hobby aspect of it. Just like the windshield wiper servo... I think a quality driveshaft can be done relatively cheaply, if you look for the clever work around. This leaves the door open for better and more innovative ideas on vehicles that we don't see here on the forums. Like independent rear suspension and 4wd. Those are VERY daunting tasks. and about impossible ''technically'' for the average folks. It's more about being clever. Like my build, when you see the finished front cantilevers... I didn't need to make that much work out of it. But I did it anyway, I thought it was more clever and added some visual appeal. One of us is going to come up with a very decent low buck solution to a problem that faces all home builders, Independent rear suspension. And we all benefit.[sm=thumbup.gif]
Hi Bob Have enjoyed your posts here and love the alternate parts that you have found. I am looking for more information on "windshield wiper servo" that you mention. Have tried searching but have not had much success. If you could post a link to it it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work. Cheers[sm=thumbs_up.gif] Don

I wonder if some of the foam that is used in NASCAR cars fuel tanks would work. It absorbs the fuel and does not allow it to slosh but yet it drains out right to the last drop. Just my 2 cents worth. Cheers Don

RE: I'm going back to the good old days
Butch I am 66 and have been at Radio Control since I was about 25. I got away from it for awhile and am just now slowly getting back into it. Before RC I was into slot car racing and plastic models of cars and airplanes. It seems that if I have the time I have to be playing around with something model related. Cheers

RE: I'm going back to the good old days
Bill I have a couple of things to work on when I get motivated. I have a Sig Citabria with 69" WS. My Son bought it unfinished. We will probably put a 40 or 46 glow in it. Also have a 41" WS Great Plains J-3 ElectriCub ARF. I put together a Sig Kadet 40 (I think) with my grand daughter for a school project last year but as yet it hasn't been flown. We also have a Cessna with about a 60" WS that we bought complete with floats and landing gear. It came with the airborne gear but no tx. It will need a bit of work to get it sorted out. I enjoy the building as much or more than the flying. If it was up to me everything would be built from scratch. Never did like the die crushed kits. I'll try and get some pictures together of some of what we have and post them here. Cheers

RE: I'm going back to the good old days
Thanks Bill. I just wish that I had a few of my oldies to restore like you do but sadly they are all gone. I started flying about 1968 if I recall correctly. First plane I started to build was Big John OMT. Next was a Professor with a Merco 60 and Champ with an OS 40. I never did intend to fly Big John as the first plane. Got several hundred flights on the Professor and Champ while learning to fly. After that came a Piper Cub, EYEBALL with a 60 and several others that I can't remember them all. Work and life kind of got in the way of flying after that and I sold a lot of planes that I had except for 2, Big John and a Bar Fli by Phill Kraft. All my airborne equipment was in the Bar Fli and it was ready to fly but had not been flown yet. Big John was about 98% done. Painted in Hobbypoxy Yellow with Painted black checkerboard on bottom of both wings and black sunburst on top of both wings. This was my baby and labour of love that I was looking so forward too. Some A&&*$#E broke into the place where I had them stored and took both these planes and my electric started box and I never saw them again. This kind of knocked the socks off my modeling until now. I am just starting to get back into it.
