RE: One way bearing always covered in oil
What fuel are you using? I was originally using "blue thunder" and was having OWBs slip all the time. Eventually someone told me it could be the dye in the fuel and once I switched fuel I haven't had another one slip.

RE: superchargers
ORIGINAL: supertib Some of you engine experts make me laugh ... You can definitely boost 2 strokes...there have been hundreds of boosted piston port snowmobiles done over the years, same with boosted Banshee's ....Just do a little research !!!!!
You are right in that a lot of sleds and quads are boosted. However, there are more than one type of 2-stroke engine design. The issue with the standard piston port design is that the exhaust port is higher than (or at least as high as) the intake port. This means that even if you supercharge it and you get that extra pressure into the crankcase, it will still just blow through he cylinder because any time the intake port is open, so is the exhaust port. And, in fact, that extra pressure in the crankcase puts more pressure on the bottom of the piston which robs power on your down stroke. The intake isn't the issue as the crankshaft port serves the same function as a reed valve cage, but the exhaust is a problem. Pretty much every two stroke ATV from the last 10+ years uses "Power valves" which can alter the restriction of the exhaust port. Some high boost aftermarket setups use rotary valves. If you run a turbo or SC on a standard piston port engine, you are actually running a "scavenger" setup. You are not making any boost, but you are getting every last bit of exhaust gasses out and refilling the cylinder completely with fresh air/fuel. The advantage of a scavenger pump is slight to none over just a good tuned pipe. Really the only way to "boost" your RC 2 stroke is to use a properly tuned "expansion chamber" (exhaust pipe). You can also grab some more power by running higher % fuel or doing a good smooth port job. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5226191/tm.htm For those unfamiliar with 2 strokes, check out this animation on Wikipedia. Just remember that our crankshafts do the same thing as the reed valve in the animation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Arbeitsweise_Zweitakt.gif

RE: superchargers
RCU does have a search button... Just FYI... Like 378 says, a SC won't work on these types of engines because there are no exhaust valves to build up pressure against. All you end up doing is pushing a bunch of un-combusted fuel / air through the engine.

They were great, but there was one thing we kept noticing. The traxxas trucks also always broke something with each run. So after about 2 years, they get their new trucks and they were amazed and dumbfounded. How can traxxas continue there business if there crap keeps breaking. Also floppy pancake chassis's LOL, was it an attempt to slow down the falling trucks to decrease damage. All plastic (W.T.F. MATE). You end up spending more on necessary upgrades until you finally have a proper truck. It's no wonder they have their own forum, it's like a safe haven for the superfans, that or clever marketing. You know there is a club that praises a 3-wheeled vehicle in europe, which is deafingly known to roll no matter what kind of turn you make. Yeah sure they looked cool, but totally impractical. Like you Traxxas. You are that 3-wheeled brit vehicle club.
Because people buy them... Why does any business make a product... Also, I am assuming that you are talking about the reliant robin... They don't actually roll that much, that was just some Top Gear shenanigans. Why do some people buy a Kia Elantra when you can get a much better car for the same money. Different people have different taste, and people's purchases aren't always based on quality alone. RE: magnum nx info
Since no one else answered I'll give you a bit of info. Short version: The spurs from any of cen's 1/10 scale MTs buggies and rally cars will work. Long version: All of CEN's 1/10 scale nitros (except touring cars) are based off of the same basic design. They MT buggy and rally just use different A arms, shocks and shock towers. The old series was called the "funfactor" series, and the new Magnum and talon have some differences. Compared to the old Funfactor series (MT2, Buggy-2, ST, ST2, Rally), the newer Magnum, MT-spec 3.0 and Talon have a longer chassis, longer rear driveshaft, different fuel tank, different "top plate", slightly different "counter gear support", .18 engine instead of a .16, and a different steering servo mount. Besides those parts, all of the suspension, diffs, bodies, engines, electronics, wheels, gears etc, are interchangeable. You can get the part numbers for the gears from this exploded view. http://www.cenracing.com/downloads/nx_ev.jpg

The Engines are fine in almost any temp as long as the cooling head is protected. Either use a body that doesn't have any holes or by insulating the cooling head. The only problem is that the plastic parts get really brittle and snap easily. I pretty much give up at about -20 C

RE: help
Obviously you want to get all of the dirt and sand out of any moving parts. You can do it by wrapping the engine and electronics in plastic and patiently spraying it with water from a squirt bottle or hose and wiping the dirt away. OR if it's seriously dirty, just take the engine and electronics off and throw it in the top rack of the dishwasher. Just make sure your mom/GF/wife doesn't know... Either way, once it's washed off, you can dry it with compressed air or leave it sit to dry. Then, make sure you lubricate all of the bearings and moving parts.

RE: 2 Stroke Double the power?
2 strokes are cheaper and rev higher since they don't need any valves or a cam and they fire every time they hit TDC. In small engines they also generally use simpler carburetors. 4 strokes are more expensive and require some type of valve setup whether it be cam driven or whatever. A 4 stroke only fires every second time it hits TDC. It's really hard to compare, because they are two different beasts. If I had to make a generalization about 2 vs 4 stroke peak power numbers, I would be inclined to say that for a similar displacement, a 2 stroke makes roughly 1.5 - 1.75 x the power of a 4 stroke. That being said, I still don't feel that it is an accurate comparison. The thing to remember is that HP = (Torque x RPM) /5252 5252 is just a conversion factor. So a two stroke will always have a rated horsepower advantage as long as it can keep making power in the high RPM ranges. Also, Peak HP and torque numbers are highly over rated and mean very little. The shape of the Hp and Torque curves are much more important. The shape you want depends on your application.

RE: Can you use 10w-30 motor oil for air filter
As above, anything is better than nothing. that being said, go to your local automotive store and buy a bottle of air filter oil for aftermarket automotive air filters. It is a very sticky oil that comes either in a squirt bottle or an aerosol can. K&N, AIRAID, AFE, any brand will work, and for $20 you will get more than you will get more than enough to last the life of the engine. Motor oil will help, but is not "sticky" like air filter oil. If I were to use anything other than air filter oil, it would be ATF.

RE: Breaking in and Running Nitro in the cold
30 F is not cold. Nitros CAN be run in much colder ambient than that. But like others have said, it is critical that the engine does get up to it's specified operating temperature. In the ballpark of 210* depending on the engine. If you are heating it up with a heat gun and making sure it gets up to running temps, you will not do any damage to the engine. Having a temperature gun is important. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, a $10 unit from your LHS will be just fine.

Clean it really well, then just go down to your local automotive store and find an epoxy that is gasoline / alcohol resistant. yes I know that the fuel is actually nitro methane with oil, but any hydrocarbon resistant epoxy will do. There are tons to chose from, but the most important thing is to get the tank clean around the crack. Another alternative is to clean all of the fuel out of the tank and use a low power soldering iron to melt the crack closed.

Did you leave your battery pack outside? If you did, that is likely what the problem was. Most electronics love cold temps because it reduces resistance (if it's not too humid), but batteries don't work well in the cold. IE: it was -31 outside this morning at work[:'(]... RE: tips and tricks for racing
ORIGINAL: Ttam Says Blarg When setting up a vehicle only change one thing at a time. Change to many and you wont know what works and what doesnt..
Very good advice! Do spend some serious time finding the spring rate / oil wieght / ride height / steering geometry / transmitter settings that work best for YOUR driving style. Be sure to check your local track to see what classes they race and get a copy of the rules that they abide by. Consistency is key. When you are practicing (and racing) try and keep you lap times as near to identical as you can. Slower consistent laps will win races whereas if you have a single accident doing fast reckless laps you will likely lose. Like SRT racer says, have spares of anything that you might break / lose (dogbnes, A arms, suspension parts etc.) as well as fuel, glow plugs, 2 or more glow ignitors, glue, tape etc etc etc. the more the better (within reason)

RE: how tuff is Cen mini madness ?
My problem with the MM is that the plastic they used is different from any of my other RC's. It is very brittle and has no flex. Also, the shocks are "friction shocks" so it really just bounces around. And the tires are very soft, which is great indoors, but on pavement they just got ripped up. The included radio is also much poorer than the one LOSI includes with their minis. I really do like that it takes a full size battery pack, and a full size steering servo. The transmission also is very good. I upgraded mine with better wheels/tires and oil filled shocks and it made a difference, but I still didn't like it much so I sold it. If you want to try it, go for it. However, I would recommend going with something more common.

If you are just looking to solder battery connections and the like, a simple 30 OR 60 watt iron like the ones you find at hobby stores or hardware stores for $10 will be just fine along with some small gauge solder and some heatshrink. However, if you are also looking to do some very fine soldering on PCBs etc, then you will want to look for a variable wattage soldering "station" with some clamps, sponge, multiple tips etc. etc.

RE: Please rate these 6 brands for somebody new at rc
The best thing to do, is to go down to your local hobby shop (or shops if there are a few in your area) and see which brands they carry. It's nice to be able to get spare parts and warranty service if needed, instead of having to order everything online. If you have never had a nitro before, please realize that there is a specific break-in procedure and they do require tuning from time to time. These are not difficult procedures, but people tend to be impatient and rush these things, then they just get frustrated. Another advantage of buying at a LHS is that they will usually be willing to help you with these thigns if you need it. A lot of places will even break them in and tune them for a small fee. Watch some youtube videos on Breaking in and tuning nitro engines. Do you have a specific budget in mind? You're budget will be a large factor in your choice considering that for a new nitro/gas off road unit you can spend anywhere from $250 to over $1000. Consider also that you may want to get a few spare glow plugs, some fuel, a receiver battery pack or two(or just some AAs) and the LHS may recommend one or two small parts that could break if you hit something depending on which unit you buy. Also, don't limit yourself to 1/10 scale as 1/8 tends to be more common. Before choosing a brand, i would really funnel downs the list by looking at what your LHS carries, deciding if you would like 2WD or 4WD, and choosing a price range. Then you can start looking at reviews from around the web of units that fit in those categories. RCU does nice reviews with lots of pictures and some videos. However, they need advertising to run the site so they don't want to upset any manufacturers and they just say that every RC they review is good.

RE: Best Cheap Beginner RC?
ORIGINAL: The Mad Modder What brands does your hobby shop stock parts for? I know my hobbytown stocks more traxxas parts than losi even though it's owned by the same company as losi.
This is a VERY important point! Especially if you do not yet have a credit card to order online you will need a LHS that carries whatever it is that you have. Ideally, I would try to find him a used Rustler XL-5 or Bandit VXL like you have. That way you guys can share spare parts and even battery packs etc. A new bandit VXL is about $250 online, so I htink $100 is in the ball park, but you will need a motor, ESC, radio, and batteries. Also, if you don't have enough experience to know that you NEED an ESC, I think maybe you should just go with a new unit. For a new unit in the $200 range I would be looking at: Traxas Slash, Rustler, Stampede, HPI Blitz, Brama, or a multitude of 1/16 or 1/18s There is no "Best" one. Duratrax definitely produces better units than it used to, and I know that the evader is generally considered to be pretty decent, but the very word "Duratrax" still makes me a bit sick to my stomach.

RE: $500 Budget to get back into RC
Electric has come a long way in the last few years. Electric is money up front for Lipo's (you already have a charger). Nitro is money along the way for fuel / glow plugs. If you are not running indoors, I really would say nitro is the way to go without question. If you want to run it all day long, no problem gas and go. If you want to run an electric all day long, you will need to shell out hundreds of dollars in batteries. Also, electrics really don't work well in winter (not a cold Canadian winter anyway). And, you need to make sure you keep your lipos balanced and charged for storage. A nitro just needs a few drops of oil or some wd40. That being said, it does take patience to get your nitro broken in and tuned properly like cooldriver says. However, i think it is well worth it. My personal recommendation would be to go with a new savage, or check out the local classifieds in your area. You can often pick up used RC's for pretty cheap with a bunch of extras. Besides all that, if you are considering an electric for bashing, at least look at the E-Revo instead. The stampede doesn't hold a candle to the savage or e-revo in terms of power, durability, or speed. Just look at the pics on the manufactures websites and you can see the difference.

RE: Running nitro in winter?
Summer I use bodies that have the cooling head exposed and winter I use bodies that have the engine covered. Also, be sure to waterproof you electronics very well as the snow will pack up in parts of your unit then melt from engine heat. A slightly richer tune is often necessary as well due to the intake air density. At cold temps (I'd say 0*F and lower) you will find that a lot of plastic (and even some aluminum) parts become much more brittle, so be cautious of this.

RE: Should I buy the MCX or MCX2?
The mSR is a great heli for a beginner... IF you take the time to set it up properly. By that I mean set the linkages and trims as level as possible and every time you insert a new battery, do it in a manner that allows the heli to stay still so the electronics can initialize. The mSR is great indoors, and can be flown outdoors also, as long as there is very little to no wind. The mCX is much easier to fly, but is also slower and less maneuverable. I would recommend it for very small indoor spaces, or for younger kids to learn on.
