RE: OS .35AX
I've got a 35AX on a mini quickee that I have designed. Just something to play with. The 35 runs great at idle and wide open, but loads up in the midrange. I have a Nelson muffler on it, and it pulls a 8.75X9W pylon prop great. Anyone know how to clean up the midrange?

Hanno Pretner OS 61
I have a Hanno OS 61 that has never been started. This is the long stroke version of the OS 61 used in the early pattern days. It runs at lower rpm to lower the noise rules that were in effect at that time. I am interested in the value of this motor. I am trying to decide whether I should go ahead and run it or sell it as is.

Were working with the sturgis school board and the city about securing a piece of property just east of town for a dedicated field. The city is 100% on board with it and agreed to giving us a 500' x 75' paved runway. Good times! Chad
DAMN You are working on some trick projects!!! AJ will be very interested. Me too!! When, and if, I ever get in your neck of the woods - I would like to take a look.

Talked to my son, AJ, last night, and he and his family will be in Billings the weekend of Sept 25 - 26. It will be nice to see them again, as it has been awhile. We have a day planned to get in some flying we will see if he is man enough to fly the SD and my little squirrelly "Pocket Rocket!! ;-) Been busy working - drag racing, and haven't gotten in much flying.

Finally got a chance to fly the SD again last weekend. Got lucky the throttle servo failed at wide open throttle - fortunately the rest of them kept working. (whew) The bladder tank worked flawlessly - the mixture didn't change till she quit. BTW my kid won Q40 AGAIN at the NATS two years in a row. "WOW"

As I understand it __ the Macs muffler is just that __ a muffler. It has little or no tuning effect. On the other hand the Jett is a tuned device that will significantly increase the power of your OS. I would get the Jett, and call Dub to get the correct spacer for the SD.

We MUST always tinker!!! Never know what you may find out. [8D] If you would, try the 9-7.5 - then the 10-6 and see if you see any difference. I am sure it is lower altitude in Fresno than Billings. Never know - may work better for you. Your fingers were twitching?? My son AJ is the overall National Q-40 champion, and he shakes like a dog shi_____ razor blades when he fires one up. RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
ORIGINAL: summerwind Earl, got to maiden the Sundowner/Jett 56LX today[:D] i went with a 9x7 to start with as i wanted to give the engine a bit more breakin time. peaked at 18,500, backed it down to 16,800............there were a few naysayers about the prop diameter, but the 20 foot rollout to get airborne quickly changed that opinion. once it came on in the air it was on, and i mean on for the whole flight. this friggin animal doesn't care where it's pointed. definately as fast as what was expected. will be trying a few different props once i get a gallon or so thru it. the Sundowner itself really suprised me........2 clicks of up elevator and it was straight as an arrow. everything Dub claimed about this setup is true to the point. pattern flying is accomplished very easily. very stable airplane. landing was much easier than i anticipated. put another way, the master of speed at our field was aking a lot of questions..........cuz he no longer is the master[:D]
Master of Speed, [;)] Good to hear the first flight went good. I started with a 9-8 APC, @ around 2,000 off peak, for my first flights which also worked out pretty good for break in. I have about 2 gallons through it now. I agree - it is surprising how good it performs that rich!! I still back the thing off around 800 - anything less and it takes the plug. The SD is an impressive plane - especially with the awesome Jett .56 Let me know how your prop testing goes. I have tried a number of sport and pylon props, and have came back to the old 10-6 APC prop. You will enjoy this one.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I took some time yesterday and got a few more flights on the SD. What a sweet plane. I flew some of the old .60 pattern maneuvers, and it nails them - pilot could use a little practice. [8|] Reverse cuban 8s, split S, 3 rolls, loops, etc. all at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. I had to make some full out runs too!! [8D] Landed on the last flight - draggin it in at a couple clicks off idle - taxied up to my feet. At the bench I took the plug out and the wire was virtually gone - a little lean. I can't say enough good about the Jett .56 - the thing has never died on me. I did check the stiffness of the horizontal, and mine is pretty stiff. Lucky enough to get some good wood - I guess.

As I read about all the mods to the Sundowner - I wonder if it is all necessary. I built mine as it came - no mods - and it works just fine. With the Jett .56 I have brought it out of a split S - from way up - wide open with no problems - wicked snaps at full speed - no flutter or anything else. Maybe I am just lucky!! [8D]

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
ORIGINAL: BIGBADBOB65 I put in the Jett 56, which is the replacement for the Jett 60SLX.(same size). I put it in at 90 degrees (at 3 oclock, looking from tail to front of plane. and it worked fine. If I did it again, I might put it at maybe 93 or 95 degrees. This would leave alittle more of outside of firewall in place. Hope this helps. Bob D
That is interesting I tried to mount the .56LX at 90 degrees, and it was obvious that I would have to take out too much material to clear the muffler. If you look close you can see that the material I removed, before I rotated the motor, is almost into the covering. The muffler was still touching the fuselage. I wonder if these planes vary a little. I made the trip to Central Hobbies, and picked up an adjustable mount and rotated the head down a little. When I pushed out the blind nuts it tore up the back of the firewall a little - so I added a piece of 1/8 ply to the back. Here is what it looks like. RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
The snow finally melted enough to get the field and do a little prop testing with the .56LX. I tried 3 props all APC a 9-8, 10-6, and a pylon 8.75-9W. The pylon prop DIDN'T work at all about as fast as a trainer. [>:] The 10-6 was the best overall prop for yesterday. It feels close to the same speed as the 9-8, but has noticeably more thrust. The 9-8 turns 18,000, and the 10-6 turns a little over 17,000. The sun is shining today may need to go to the field and play again. [8D]

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
ORIGINAL: TopGanJa Hey Bob, and everyone else, never posted here before but have a few questions if you have the time, I used the same setup in the sundowner the Bob has, with the jet stream muffler, and the exsaust exiting out the bottom. I havent flown it yet, but my question and concern is do you have a heating problem inside the fuselage. Meaning, does the heat from the muffler make it hot in side the fuslage. i was thinking about cutting out the spot at the bottom of the fuselage and the extra slot used for electric setup to create more airflow and less heat inside. I was wondering if this was a good idea and wanted to ask you what you have done before i cut into my plane? will the heat from hte muffler creat any problems inside, or does the radio equptment not get effected by the heat? Thanks again, Kristian
I cut the bottom hole out of mine, and it works good. With the .56LX set rich it is a performer, and the fuse does not overheat. I have landed the plane after a fairly long flight, and immediately held my hands on the fuse top, bottom, sides, and it was cool to the touch. The end of the exhaust was hot enough to make you move your finger quickly!!! [>:] To this point the muffler heat does not seem to be a problem. We will see how it works this summer when it gets hot. Now if all this damn snow will melt!! We have been hit pretty hard *** my place is covered with about a foot of snow. If it warms up, it will still be another couple weeks before I can get in some more flights. [:@] Earl

Easystern, I am IMPRESSED!! You have quite a collection of toys. Believe it or not I worked for Chevrolet when that Camaro was new. I set up the new ones as they came off the truck. You have done a beautiful job on the Camaro . I had a 68 with an aluminum rod 302 in it many years ago, and looking at yours sure brings back memories. I was never fortunate enough to meet Eddie Hill and Ercie, but I followed their yellow dragster for years. One of the good guys. Thanks

RE: Speed Freaks Wanted- Over 200 Members already !
ORIGINAL: vicman I'm likeing that Pocket Rocket. Kind of like a Q500 with a cowl. Is the wing tapered a little at the ends?
This thing started out from plans of an electric pylon racer. Needless to say it has taken some mods to make it work - 20% increase in size of plans - longer nose moment - 50 in wing span - larger rudder, etc. The airfoil is the same, and it takes carbon fiber rods for spars and 2 oz cloth half way out the trailing edge tapered to the leading edge to get it strong enough. The wing is tapered a little 6 1/2 in at the root and 5 1/4 in at the tip. The leading edge is straight. The motor is an OS 35AX with a Nelson muffler, and it is FAST. I have never gotten a radar gun reading on it, so MPH would be a guess. I am pretty sure it is over 150. The OS is rich in the midrange and it is a bit of a challenge to get it into the air without torque rolling the plane. Once it is in the air it flies good wide open. Here are some pics of the latest one. I've lost track, but I think this number 7. I have made improvements on each one, and this one seems to work the best. Mounted the motor with head lower and a Tettra bladder tank which seemed to help a bit. The tip cord is 1/2 inch more than the yellow one, and it seemed to help with take off. I got in a few flights yesterday the Jett is making some good power! The last flight I set the motor 13 to 1400 off peak 16,600 to 16700 rpm with the 9-8 APC, so I haven't leaned on it yet. On the last flight it took the Sundowner straight up - rolling - as far as you want to go. I flew a few pylon laps and the thing turns great needs no tip weight. This is an impressive sport plane. It will be interesting to see how it works when I run it hard and start playing with props.
