How to set flaps on chan 5&6.
I have the TTX650. I have two separate flap servos on an RV 8. I need to mix the channels because the servos are facing opposite each other and a Y harness won't work. I am using 1AL1FL wing type. The manual doesn't cover the flaps very well. I could move the servo, but there isn't a mounting block for the control horn. Is there a way to mix things to avoid cutting into the wing? I am using the small thin wing Spektrum servos. Great radio BTW.

RE: Onboard glow, dummy needs help again
I did have problems with the store bought system. The spring in the jack is cheap and will lose contact. Radio Shack might have a better quality jack.

RE: Deployed flaps plane stalled and crashed
Another question is: How much were the flaps extended? Too much would be like throwing out an anchor. Instant stall.

RE: a lesson to all
72Mhz. is OK at our field because all the new guys have 2.4 radios. Plus we are far enough out in the country to avoid interference. I have both, but I am transitioning as things wear out. No point in getting rid of good equipment. I have been flying long enough that I occasionally try to pull the 2.4 antenna out before flying. Preflight! Preflight! Then check one more time. ;-)

RE: Throtle Spring
Since I usally make a longer throttle arm to match the servo arm, I leave the spring on. The extra leverage of the longer arm minimizes the backpressure of the spring. Not a big deal with the spring since the throttle is moving all the time anyway.

RE: Gas Engine interference
Amplified extensions are used for long runs of wire in the large airframes. They aren't needed in 99% of the planes. Especially now that people are running higher voltages and larger gauge wire, etc. They are suppposed to make up for signal loss and reduce cross coupling in the wires in long runs to the servos in 40%ers and the big gliders, etc. I've never used them.

RE: SIG Mark II Engine ?
The Thunder Tiger GP42 has power beyond its specs. It will work fine. A Kadett would be in its element with a .50 -.60 4 stroke. Nice quiet half throttle cruiser.

RE: Reciever Questions
It's a gamble. What is your plane worth to you? I bought a $10 "Spektrum" fromn HK, and lost a plane due to a lockout, but I knew it going in. Now I use it on small, expendable combat foamies to try to make it fail again. May have been some other cause. Those orange rcvrs. will work, but "you pays your money and you takes your chance" as the saying goes.. Give it a try. I won't use one on a plane I have any respect for. I also bought some HS55 imitations from Value Hobby. One of the first two I used was bad, but they were only $2.60 each. The servo cord and gear set is worth that. Just buy a couple more than you need.

RE: 60 size ARF
Ed Moorman did a test on sticks by removing the traditional tapered stick wingtips and adding fences (about 3/8" high all the way round) to the flat tip ribs. It lowered the stall speed and really increased the roll rate, but the plane wouldn't spin well. Hard to stall into the spin. Made the airflow over the wing more laminar thus making the ailerons have more effect. After I beat up my stick(still shiny new!!) some I'm going to give it a try.

RE: 60 size ARF
The Value Hobby 60 stick(65in. wing) is $88 plus shipping. $105 I put a GMS 75(already had it) on it and turned it to 45deg to let the muffler exhaust clear the fuse and wing. Flies like a really sporty, overpowered trainer. Lots of cutouts to make it lighter. Lands slow. The gear is surprisingly strong for an ARF. I used the hardware. Good second plane without breaking the bank. If I did it again, I would make a straight wing joiner and take the slight dihedral out of it. Just to see how it flies.

RE: Recommended Throttle servo for a 30cc engine
I usually make an extended carb arm to increase the leverage of the servo, and also to match the servo arm length to the carb arm length. I don't like trying to adjust the little short Walbro throttle arms with a longer servo arm. The holes in the carb arm will usually tap out to 4-40 or 3mm threads. Then cut out a piece of aluminum the shape I want and mount it to the carb.

RE: Spinner nut falls off
We have the Loctite sales reps. put on forums at work. They buy us lunch and do a talk. Called a lunch-and-learn. They have all kinds of compounds for various sealing applications. The plastic Loctite bottles are made of a special plastic that lets air into the bottle to keep the stuff from hardening. That is why an old bottle of the stuff looks like it leaked. It did!! It is an anaerobic compound that sets without air. As when the nut is tightened. So the bottle must breathe to prevent hardening. The removable blue will work for the prop shaft, but it isn't needed. I have used all sorts of nuts on 4 strokes. A lean needle will cause a backfire. I had one throw a prop nut 20ft. one time.

RE: Disconect allerions on a trainer 40 ?
First look for an instructor, but if you have to try flying by yourself, try cutting the aileron throw down and moving both sticks(rud+ail) together(a coordinated turn). That is the same as using a three channel radio with a little aileron mixed in. You can develop muscle memory and also use the ailerons to level the plane. BUT you must eventually learn to use the ailerons independently. Most trainers don't have enough dihedral to be stable with fixed ailerons. Just for fun I have tried to fly them without using the ailerons. It will work but it is a struggle. Lots of opposite rudder has to be used for corrections. The plane sort of wallows out of a turn. I also tried no ailerons on my 33%ers. That doesn't work at all!!![:D]

RE: Dragstick 60
I just put together a 60 stik from Value Hobby. Well built and a good flyer. I was impressed by the strong landing gear. Usually not a quality of the Chinese ARFs. Faster than a trainer but would easily work for one with a buddy box and low rates.. Slows down to land well. I used a GMS75 on mine. If you have soloed and can handle a trainer, then I don't see a problem with the Stick. The Value Hobby stick is $88 + shipping. $105 for a 65in wing. I had the 75 on a Texas RC trainer before the stick. The trainer wing is semi-symmetrical and straighter than a trainer. More like an Avistar wing. It was a rocket, but the plane took the abuse. The Value Hobby plane is a better quality, lighter weight ARF with better covering. The color part of the covering on the TRC trainer(Explorer 40) was separating from the clear part out of the box, but it flew well. Especially for $69. Go for the 60 size plane. It will fly better and be more stable than a 40 size.

RE: Would you rebuild it or lay it to rest
Do it!! Repairing the engine would be a good training exercise with a good runable engine for graduation. It could always be used for another plane it you don't like the way it runs. Can't have too many. I use the battery tester from Control South. Does 250ma-500ma-1A-1.5A. up to 20vdc. To get full capacity plus verification of the capacity nimh batteries should be slow cycled about three times before use. Called a formation charge.

RE: Value Hobby .60 size Ugly Stik
Maidened the stik today. The plane flies really well. I put some wheel pants from my junk box on it. Looks pretty good that way. No instructions on attaching the tail wheel to the rudder. Did about 10 touch and go's. The GMS 75 with a Xoar 13x6 is a good match for it. Balanced right on the calculated CG without additional weight. Great plane for the money. I need a little more throw on the ailerons to boost the roll rate but that is easy.

RE: Firewall protection
Polyurethane will work. Two or three coats. So will epoxy thinned a bit with denatured alcohol. I have used both. Gas engines aren't quite as bad as glow as far as messing up a firewall. Probably not enough oil to really soak the wood.

RE: RCS 140, what is it really?
The Moki is a fine engine, and I would like to try one, but I can't get past the look of the carb sticking out almost to the prop. The carb looks bigger than the cylinder on the smaller engines. Maybe I'll put one on a Stik type plane with no cowl. A 1.20 sized stik with one battery(rx and ign.) would work great. Or a plane with a cowl that is flat under the prop shaft. That's the ticket!! An excuse for another plane!

RE: RCS 140, what is it really?
Small engines need more oil. Has to do with the swept area of the cylinder relative to the fuel passing through the area. T.O.M. explained it on here one time. Can't remember exactly, but small engines use less fuel relative to the square inches of cylinder wall. Therefore, you need more oil in the mix.

RE: Transmitter tray?
I will concede that my tray is a little inconvenient when starting the engine, etc., but once I got my routine worked out that doesn't bother me anymore. But the pluses outweigh the minuses.

RE: Transmitter tray?
I started using a tray when the sweaty Alabama summers made the xmtr. slick. Peel and stick Velcro helped gripping the xmtr. some, but a tray with shoulder hooks really did the trick. More relaxing, better stick control. I don't care for the strap pulling on my neck.

RE: Mixing on a plane
Check the wing types in the owner's annual. I'm not familiar with that radio. It might not support it. If that plane is very big, you might want to consider upgrading the radio to one with wing types, dual rates, expo, mixes, etc.

RE: Mixing on a plane
Are you trying to fly a delta wing (aileron/elevator in one) or just want to mix the two on a regular airframe. You might have a mix already for the delta wing. Look in the book for wing types.

RE: US 41 engine hard starting by hand?
US41s have a magneto. They have to be turning a certain RPM to generate enough power to fire the plug. Hard to do with a hand flip, but it should have a spring starter that usually works. There is also a way to set the prop to make that flywheel pass the coil with enough speed to fire the ignition. I believe it is on Horizon's website for Zenoah engines, but it it should work.

RE: Value Hobby .60 size Ugly Stik
Too late for fuse joining pics. I'll try to get some of the final assy. The fuse half has a bulkhead right at the forward edge of the white area. Each bulkhead has a square hole in all four corners. You have to whittle four square pegs to allow the two tapred halves of the fuse to match up when put together. I glued the pegs in one half to secure them. Then I put glue on the other half and pushed them together and taped them to hold it all square. The bulkheads are laser cut so they line up well. Even the pushrod tubes lined up OK. The joint is barely visible since it is at the edge of the white. ___________ l__l l__l l l l O O l l__ _ _l l__l_____l__l

RE: Value Hobby .60 size Ugly Stik
Got the fuse glued together. Had to whittle the joining pegs to make them fit the taper of the fuse, but it all lined up square in the end. Didn't use the suggested servo mounting method. The servos were going to hit the sides of the hatch hole. Ended up just cutting holes in the aileron servo hatches and adding wood for the screws. Too much trouble to fab up a servo mount that I liked. Turned the motor 45deg to get the GMS, semi-tuned muffler to clear the fuse and wing. Also makes it look racy!! I can tell people that I did it to lower the drag. Not a lot of wood in the fuse to glue in the vertical stab, but I will try it without adding braces. Seems fairly strong.

RE: BEST 50cc CHINA ENGINE RIGHT NOW??
A few years ago DA published the sources of their engine parts. The best you can say is that they are assembled in the USA. Not made in the USA. DA may have their parts made to better specs and better QC, but 80%+ were made outside the US. Quality control is the issue. Not what country the parts were made in. I'm with 3136. I rotate planes so my engines should last a lot longer. Not much WOT.
