RE: Should I get a pilots license?
Good points, chuckh. I got my private in '76, started flying charter & corporate in '80. One of the great aspects is dropping into a small airport out in the country unannounced, experiencing life in different towns and meeting people. Always see and learn new things on the road.

Don't fly anything you can't afford to lose. How can one bury $3K in a TF kit? Seems quite high to me.

RE: Lost passion for flying, now what?
I agree you should hang onto your gear. The AMA website can show you where the local clubs are, there are many near you. Also call local hobby shops for local flying sites, you may find a site that's not as costly. We have a site with $40 dues, but membership is full. We have local club members who also belong to the Toledo Weak Signals site. They have an amazing flying site that's free, you just have to volunteer at the Toledo RC show. It's about 45 minutes from you IIRC. Good luck!

Stay with Ni-cads. More reliable, probably cheaper.

RE: Average Number of Crashes/Week at your field.
BH's post #2, LMAO! Small club, 22 members. We have 5-6 fliers out twice a week in the summer. Possibly one new guy, the others are average sport fliers. A minor crash twice a month, total wipeout once every 6 weeks. We do have a higher crash rate in the spring, winter dumb thumbs. Crashes are taken seriously, as the club as a whole wants to make sure the member isn't 'slipping', preflight and prep is done correctly, etc. If a real brain fade happens, lots of ribbing is to be endured.

RE: Should I get a pilots license?
T-max, good you've hung in here! I was about your age, took an intro flight, and loved it! I did it in part because I thought it would be cool to go on a date in a plane. Lol. That never happened, but I've been a career pilot over 30 years. One thing about taking up flying that hasn't been discussed is that at your age, you'll learn quick and retain better. I've instructed older folks and the processes and reactions slow with age. So learn now, while you're at your sharpest. I learned long ago to ignore naysayers & negative people. Talk to positive, supportive people and you'll turn out like them. Good luck, and let us know if you've taken a couple flights!

RE: Great Planes Big Stik Kit Plans
Do a search for Ed Moorman (IIRC). He's written for several magazines, has modded Sticks for years and gotten them to handle like pattern planes. One mod I'm doing to mine is squaring the wingtips and making removable tip plates.

RE: National 747 crash
Knowing how anal loadmasters usually are (chocks + tie downs), and how tie downs on mil acft are overbuilt, plus the low percentage of load each vehicle was, just makes me suspect of load shift as the root cause. Having experienced both trim runaway and frozen trim after takeoff, I'd suspect some type of flight control failure. More importantly, reviewing accident findings over 30+ years teaches one that the real cause can be something rarely suspected. I'm waiting for a thorough review by our authorities. The data and voice recorders will have a wealth of info.

I've never heard of that type of failure. I have pulled the top coat (color) off Ultra-Kote while removing a factory decal on an ARF. It was very tough to do, but I managed it. [:)]

RE: Flutter
I just took the LiFe battery out, it was puffed.
I never knew they would do that. Have always heard they were tolerant of abuse. Charlie, John B., Rodney et al, great info. The point behind Charlie's 'unaerodynamic' mass balance pic is to get as much weight ahead of the hinge line. We've also gotten rid of flutter on ailerons by tapering the last 10-20% of the aileron trailing edge.

RE: OS 91 FS Surpass problems
That engine will run fine inverted, sideways, or straight up - as long as the tank centerline and carb are the same. As that's a taildragger, prop up the tailwheel to keep the fuselage level. Four-strokes like nitro, I never run less than 10%. Kochj's tuning is spot-on. I'd suspect carb/tank height, or a leak in the fuel plumbing or intake. What prop are you running, and what's the highest rpm it holds? Last, test for overheating (lean run, water in fuel, too much prop). Run it for 2-3 minutes at high rpm, then shut down. Lick your (least favorite lol) finger, then touch the fins. If you can touch lightly for a couple seconds, it's good. If not, it's running too hot.

Yep, San Antonio Sewer Pipe lol. I believe the gear was deployed throughout. The last thing I'd be doing is jerkin' the gear during an emergency. Accident investigators do amazing reconstruction forensics. Let's see what they say. It will take several months.

RE: Deployed flaps plane stalled and crashed
When you raise a trailing surface (flap or aileron), that's called reflex. Sailplanes use it to manage lift.
