RE: How to handle a difficult pilot!
This is an AMA forum and just decided to add my current AMA situation. Don't belong to a club anymore and don't feel the need for the insurance. I do miss the mag. I think the AMA did some admirable work with the FCC. Now that freq reservation is increasingly becoming a nonissue the soon-to-be fight with the FAA over the blurring lines between UAV's and toy planes is going to be heating up. I hope the AMA is up to it but I don't think they are a strong enough lobby to sway the FAA much, if needed. Like I said, the park scene may be just a phase and I'll probably see a gas plane I can't live without and re-up my AMA, then look for somewhere to fly where I don't have to join a club. That's not likely around here.

RE: How to handle a difficult pilot!
I would bet a dollar to a donut (because these days donuts are more than a dollar) that this field's history is your typical formula for a club take over. Long ago this was probably a nice rogue field controlled by users where everyone had a lot of fun with a few common sense rules. Then a nearby club looses it's field or just decides the rogue field is nicer and approaches the county with a deal. Now a few people are having a lot of fun exercising the clubs presumed authority over the previous rogues. (One deviation would be that the original rogue pilots on there own got into some pi$$ing match which caused one group of them to have a psychotic episode and decide to form a club. Every Christmas an AMA license was traditionally one of my stocking stuffers from my wife. Except for last year I told her not to bother. She was shocked. I've discovered electrics and parks, and sold most of my gas stuff. I'm sure I'll get the itch to fly gas again but for now I'm just enjoying the silence. ... and I'm not talking about the motor.

CATCH 22 - No CG here. Frank Tallman's own B-25 squadron. You have to have a pretty sophisticated (twisted) sense of humor to enjoy the movie. (Buck Henry wrote the screenplay). But the making of the movie is fascinating. http://www.aerovintage.com/catch22.htm

RE: AMA competitor launches! Sportfliers.com $20 per year
You really need to do some Googling before sending any money to this guy. Yes there are a lot of hits on Lance Kerness but don't be too swift in thinking they're different people. Most all the hits are in Nevada and they almost all have him as the head of some off-the-wall (scam?) business. Some of which end in litigation with him as the defendant. But hey, I guess there could be lots of Lance's Kerness's running around Nevada with the same business practices. It's such a common name. What Google can tell you for sure is this Lance Kerness with this exact P.O. Box # is also the owner of at least two websites with questionable titles that I refuse to open for the sake of decency... Well that and I don't want a frying pan to the back of my head if my wife see's what I think will pop-up.

RE: PAY PAL ACCOUNT
Another tip. Don't use your debt card as your pay source. Just use a regular credit card. I learned the hard way. A scammer bled me of $3000 directly out of my checking account before I caught it. A lot easier to recover funds from a credit card than your bank, while checks are bouncing. And yet another tip. Keep your PayPal account name and password different than any other login. The scammer got into my account by using a key logger that my anti virus didn't pick-up. He guessed that my daily email login and password were the same as my PayPal account and he was right. The bi-ch of it was, he bought $3000 worth of virtual "Gold" or "power points" or whatever on that online "Warcraft" game. Used my real, hard earned money to by something that doesn't exist??

Wow that's what I call service! Ten minutes and I got an answer from the man himself! Thanks Skaliwag. Unfortunately I'm pretty well finished with the wing. Ill cut 1/8" out of the former and reinforce it with some ply. I'm kit bashing this one a little. It's going to be electric and I'll probably do a little build thread on it over on RCG. I'm trying to make a "mini-me" version of Bridi's original orange Kaos. I've already shortened and sharpened the nose and trimmed a little off her waist for that sexy sub-fin. Tricycle gear with NWS. Skydrill engineering problem...
Per plans the wing is built upside down to maintain a flat top wing (dihedral bottom). So the "jig tabs" are correctly on the top of the ribs. But the slot in R1 for the ply wing mount "tongue" is cut on the wrong side of the cord centerline. It should be on the top side of the cord centerline. It is currently cut on the bottom side of the cord centerline, opposite the "jig tabs". See the R1 rib dwg. So the Skydrill's that have been built already, either have the wing on upside down (anhedral top) or must have had the fues former cut out. Which I guess I'll have to do(?) I skimmed over some Skydrill threads and didn't see it mentioned. Did I miss something? EDH

RE: Scaled Tiporare Plans
Wow that 1/2 size Curare is sharp. Could possibly make me reconsider on the Tipo. The nose is much more electric motor friendly and I wouldn't have to worry about fues tucks. What to do?? For this size model the glued on wing is the way to go for weight, strength and simplicity. But that's going to require a pretty exotic canopy / hatch for the battery on the Tipo. I was also planning a hand toss model but once I saw those micro air retracts on UH I had to try them. If I can't get them shoe horned in it was only 60 bucks. Plus the problem with no landing gear in the Phx area is you're limited to city parks and school yards (both are varying degrees of illegal depending on the local rules). All the AMA flying fields are dirt/rocks or pavement. Ouch... Looks like you've got a good start on your Pico! Keep on it. I admire Mark's ability to stay on task... it's inspiring. EDH

RE: Scaled Tiporare Plans
I've been following your scaled Tipo threads with interest. Have there been any small Tipo's finished and flying? I ran across the scaled tipo drawings on a "Trenton Flyers"(?) website a long time ago and got an idea that I couldn't shake. I don't know if anyone has noticed but if you take the 60 size dwg and reduce it to 50% it puts it smack into 1/2a - speed 400 territory. It also makes it extremely easy to build because 1/2" plank becomes 1/4", 16th sheet becomes 1/32nd, etc, etc. There is also a "Simple" wing solution - A three piece ACE foam wing ala Mach None. The 5.5" root cord is roughly 50% of the Tipo 60 and with the right cut on the center section I can match the Tipo's double taper almost exactly. Sure it's semi symmetrical but at this scale lets face it, it's a sport plane. So wish me luck! I've just ordered a set of striaght and tapered Ace replicas from McClain Wing Cores, a set of micro air retracts from United Hobbies and I have a Scorpion HK series motor just waiting for something like this. When I start cutting wood I'll post a build thread. Search under… Tiporare-E! EDH

RE: italian bomber flight 4 , with slightly less crashier crash !
To help troubleshoot the problems, if he has separate servos for each throttle he can take advantage of that center engine by putting it on it's own channel. Get the plane to altitude and kill the two wing engines. He may not be able to maintain altitude but at the very least he can fly it around for a while to trim it out and check the CG. In the video one engine was surging wildly throughout and there's a 66% chance it was a wing engine. So I don't know how anyone can make any judgment about the flying qualities of this model until the engines are synched or at least running properly.

I came within a split second of getting my head blown off by a 12ga while flying a Cox P-40 control line. My buddy and I thought it would be cool to shoot the little plastic P-40 out of the sky. (We lived in the middle of the desert at that time but what is now suburban Phoenix) I wrongly assumed my buddy would just aim the gun at one point of the flight-path arc and shoot. I caught him out of the corner of my eye PANNING THE GUN AROUND THE CIRCLE WITH ME IN THE MIDDLE! I screamed like a girl and hit the dirt. The little plane now free of my grasp buzzed off and hit the ground. Then I heard "what happened I just had it lined-up"...

Without spending all night searching for an answer thru these 43 pages. Are the 2 (TWO!!) problems fixed for future purchases: 1) ZGUID issued at factory - This seems to be addressed by a targeted recall and by checking your equip at the FASST equiped LHS. 2) ZGUID can be triggered by rapid On/Off cycles - This is obviously more important but I see no answer to it in any of the Futaba SB's. Waiting for an answer to number two is what's holding up my future purchases. NO WAY should that get a Use-As-Is disposition.

I’m sure Futaba is doing everything they can to get this resolved ASAP. With all the big events and shows coming up it is going to be devastating to have a “FASST pin on the frequency boards. Liability claims could get out of hand. I hope our friends in this chosen hobby are above such nonsense. RE: Arizona Jet Rally 07
Sounds like the participants had a great time but from the other side of the pit fence the same couldn't be said. I haven't been to a AJR for a couple years so when I got the free time to go out Sat morning with my 9 year old and his friend I was excited. What happened?? The last time I was there, there were big names and big iron. It seems to have gone backward? I know I'm just your average sport flyer and can't name all the pilots but the only name I recognized was Bill Hemple and he lives just a couple hours down the road. The same five or six planes flew for the few hours I was there. The most impressive A-10 looked like it was just there for a photo-op. The pit fence seemed to be more than just a 3' boundary, more of a barrier so the chosen ones didn't have to mingle with the common folk. The kids were board in 5 min and started plying on a big dirt pile with the rest of the board kids until some club member chased them off. Come on, kids… dirt pile… where's the problem? I took that as a signal to leave. I'm sorry, my opinion is my own and I'm sure some people had a great time but even the shop talk at the LHS was negative.

CAsniffer's assy mods make sense. His wing will never fail at the center and he didn't have to glass it. Unfortunately it looks like these wings have a tendency to break outboard of the joiner also. Not much you can do there without reengineering the whole wing.
ORIGINAL: timothy thompson I NEVER SAID A SIMPLE 4 PLACE! THEY ARE COMPOSITE CONSTRUCTION AND VERY STRONG . you cant compare a model to the full scale in that way. i wonder how many of these failures occured at full power in a high G turn. The model wing joining method is weak even with reinforcements. I fly a saito 80 at half power and do loops rolls and spins. The trick is to not overload the designed G load. It doesnt help that the box says its fully aerobatic. The full scale is a GA aircraft and can perform! the strength of composite materials is startling and will replace aluminum and titanium. airbus uses most all composite on the A380 and they break wing jigs too! the least the arf kits can include are rib patterns but they want you to buy a new one not fix.
"Bizarre" is the only word that comes to mind…[8|] And I don’t like to kick a guy when he’s down, but… The A380 is NOT mostly composite. Only the tail cone aft of the pressure bulkhead, the vert, stab and flight control surfaces are composite along with a few other subassemblies. Less than 25% by volume and less than 10% by weight. You're thinking of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, 80% by volume including it’s fues made from rolled barrel sections.

RE: gp lancair wings snapping
Is it just me? Every time T.T. posts it seems we're treated to either... Know-It-All Arrogance: "its common sense to glass the center section. Experienced modelers know this" "building 30 yrs" "glassing the center adds tremendous shear strength" " the wood joiner and butt gluing is not enough" "The ARF generation has no ideas how to fix and or build a wing. glass that center section. How much building exp do you have". Or blinding ignorance: "Look at any instruction sheet to a kit built plane and you always glass the center" "with a long tapered high aspect ratio wing which is thin, you must be very careful on loads applied." "the real aircraft is not designed for it." "1:1 lancs were not designed to be aerobatic they are a 4 place GA aircraft". I can't do anything about the arrogance. But I can help with the ignorance… It's known to just about everyone that comparing the structure of a wood/fiberglass RC model to it's full scale brother is an exercise in futility for reasons too many and to obvious to explain. But just as an FYI on the full scale Lancair... The Lancair ES is the economy version of the vaunted 350+ HP Lancair IV. Structurally they're pretty much the same. Calling a Lancair a simple "4 place GA aircraft" is like calling a Porsche 911 Turbo an economy-box because it has a backseat and 6cyl's. Although not designed specifically for aerobatics it can and does quite well. The "IV's" are a staple of the Sport class at Reno and outperform the F1's without structural reinforcements. To race at Reno a pilot has to complete a training course and check ride in their aircraft, that includes aerobatic maneuvers. The wing itself has a reputation that prompted one pilot/blogger to write, "As far as construction goes, the Lancair seems built to survive several World Wars. While the Cirrus is certified in the NORMAL category, the Lancair is in the UTILITY category, which requires the plane to be able to survive higher G-load, so the Lancair is certified to be structurally stronger than the Cirrus. I spoke to someone who said he took his Lancair through turbulence so strong that no other plane he knows of could have survived it. When Lancair put the wing in a jig to put huge loads on the wing to see when it would break, they broke the TESTING JIG rather than the wing! Oops!" I think most who post here are smarter than the average bear and I believe I am too. Although my field now is Avionics Engineering for DOD acft I started as a acft mechanic. I'm a 20 year A&P and proud to keep my ticket current. Although never a Lancair I've assisted in several EAA acft builds. I've been modeling for more years than I like to admit.

Our wings are exposed to just about every form of dynamic load. Compression, shear, torsion, tension there is no argument there… But glassing the center inch or two of an ARF wings’ sheeting is just going to help any potential failure move outboard by that amount. A properly mixed and cured epoxy joint is NOT going to fail on these models, THE ADJACENT WOOD WILL. If it makes you sleep better at night knowing the center 2 inches of your wing won’t break, it’s all good.
