RE: Pitch on the nitro volcano transmission?
They are definitely Mod 1.0, I've swapped lots of clutchbells and spurs around between my other nitros which are also Mod 1

RE: replaced my busted diff. tonight
Mesh is really important on a diff, especially the rear. If there's a little bit of slop or backlash then that equates to a smaller tooth contact area, which is why teeth get worn or busted off. Shim the diff correctly to have minimal backlash without binding, and it should last for ages.

RE: steering throttle
The 3003 is an entry-level servo. I'd stick with something a bit beefier to turn the big Volcano wheels. The 3003 is about 3kg.cm of torque, you probably want at least 5-6kg.cm for the Volcano. It is compatible though. Most servos are - the pinout nowadays is the same across brands, as is case size.

RE: fuel line
It probably won't fit the nipples on teh carb and the fuel tank, or the exhaust so probably not! Larger outer diameter would obviously be ok if the inner was the same.

RE: Brushless Tornado anyone?
15C 4000mAh pack would have the same discharge capability as a 20C 3000mAh pack. You can't take the 'C' rating in isolation. For a drifter, even a 15C 2500mAh pack is probably adequate. There's not much load on the battery when drifting.

RE: Brushless Tornado anyone?
The 'C' rating is how capable they are of supplying discharge current. It won't flatten faster or slower than any other pack of the same capacity. But yes, 15C 4000mAh will be plenty for the stock brushless setup. I don't know much about the brushless Redcats though so can't really offer any advice there.

RE: adjusting gear mesh after running ?
It's not so much the wear that causes the mesh to go out - it's the vibrations loosening the motor mount screws, or big hits causing the motor to shift even if the screws are done up tight, or even warping the chassis a bit. After a big hit it's wise to have a quick visual. It may be worthwhile just penning a mark on the bottom of the chassis showing where the screws should be, then it's easy to check if they have shifted on you.

RE: volcano single gear upgrade transmission
The two-speed from the Tornado and the Tsunami really only belongs on the on-road car. The one-way bearing is too weak for off-road driving, especially with larger wheels. I don't know about the Volcano T2 transmission, I understand it's an all-new 2-speed design but I don't know if it's available as parts. There are a few people who have done big-block conversions to the Volcano.

RE: new tires
If I were to put bigger tires on the BB I'd consider swapping the 2-speed out for a single-speed. I busted two one-way bearings in the 2-speed with stock tires, I'd hate to think what bigger tires would do.

RE: Alternate bodies for volcano
Painting is easy. You just have to remember that it's critical to do many light coats! That first coat especially - since if that one runs or drips then it's visible on the outside of the shell. After the 2nd or 3rd coat, if the paint runs it won't be visible from the outside so it doesn't matter (you paint the inside, in case you didn't know). The classic beginner mistake is too much paint on that first coat. As for cutting holes and damaging the cooling head, well if you land on a decent rock it'll go straight through the body shell anyway but you have a couple of options - fabricate a rollbar of some sort, or simply drill holes in the top of the cooling head and put zip ties though the holes. Then if you skid on the pavement, the zip ties get scraped up instead of the aluminum. As for the pull start, I untied mine and put a longer tube around the pull cord. Now it protrudes through the hole in the body shell. I was sick of fumbling around inside the cutout, around a hot cooling head, just to restart my engine.

RE: spur
What's the T2 spur like? can somebody take a photo? It's probably on a 5mm shaft right? looks like it has a slipper plate on both sides? Eye-balling it looks like a 44T or so - how close am I? [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNPR4&P=7]Savage X spur in 46T[/link] looks like it could fit with a trivial amount of effort, just stick some slipper pad material to it. Peel it off the Volcano spur if you need.

RE: Transmitter crystal
The Traxxas ones (~$9) are definitely the right size, and I'm pretty sure the Losi set for the Mini-T (~$7.50) are standard too. Certainly there are cheaper sets out there (in fact the Losi set are about $5-$6 at most sites) but liquidrc has 99c shipping worldwide which really helps when you aren't in the US...

RE: volcano t2 spur
And don't land jumps with the throttle open. This causes the wheels to be going much faster than the ground and the shock in the drivetrain causes the spur to strip. If the T2 has a slipper clutch then back the pressure off slightly on the slipper. The slipper is there to absorb the drivetrain shock.

RE: different bodies for tsunami
Most 190-200mm car bodies, or car bodies designed for the HPI Savage will fit ok if you don't mind them looking quite 'jacked up' - most will be so wide that the wheels won't clear the fenders like the stock body. The ultrawide might be wide enough though. HPI make a Camaro.

RE: got my volcano running today for the first time
Fuel does have a limited lifespan - the nitromethane absorbs water. Not a problem if you run frequently, but make sure you don't have loads of fuel leftover at the end of summer, otherwise it will sit for all of winter and deteriorate. What fuel did you use for break-in? If you're happy with the performance of it then continue to use it. I think older manuals suggested break-in with 5-10% and then running with 15%-20%. I've never seen this advice repeated anywhere else - I've always read/heard that break-in should be performed with the fuel you intend to run with.

RE: Front bearings.
Get a ruler out and measure the intact bearing on the other side. It's all metric so it's always to the nearest millimeter. Then any brand which fits will be ok. Generally you only need the inside and outside diameter.

Make sure your filter is clean and oiled (and installed!!!) maybe there's a bit too much cruft in there somewhere which conceivably could wear the plugs.

RE: "OFFICIAL" Redcat Lighting VX Thread
If the grub screw is wound in too tight (high shift point) then it can be wound in so far that it doesn't spring out fully. Try backing it out 1/2 a turn and see if that helps.

RE: Which glow plug for Lightning?
It has a platinum catalyst in the wire which reacts with the methanol in the fuel. Sometimes this catalyst deteriorates so you can start the truck with the glow starter (because it glows hot) but when you remove the glow starter the engine dies, because the catalyst can't sustain the heat anymore.

RE: Need Help with Disassembly !!!!
I've had luck pushing bearings out from the opposite side by using a flat-head screwdriver. Even with two bearings installed you can usually get one corner of the screwdriver into the gap between them and give it a tap and they come free. You might try throwing them in the freezer for 30 minutes to try shrink the bearings ever-so-slightly. Or maybe in the oven at a low temp to heat up and soften the plastic.

The stripped screw you can rescue by filing a 'flat' on either side of the screw head, then use pliers or a spanner to unscrew it. Or by using a hacksaw to cut a slot in it and use a flat-head screwdriver.

RE: Redcat Racing Tornado Thread
The black spacers are for setting preload (ride height) not spring stiffness. They don't make the springs any stiffer. If you place so many in that you lose any static droop then you end up with a very bouncy ride. If you want stiffer springs, then buy stiffer springs! The Jato ones might be good, I don't really know how stiff they are. Most Stadium trucks and the like have fairly soft springs, you might need to look into shocks intended for a heavier truck.
ORIGINAL: skyjake Setup Problems - heels Spin even though idle scree is down all of the way.
I think "Down" all the way would raise the idle. You want to back the screw out to lower the idle. Turn your clutch bell by hand there should be no metal-on-metal rubbing feel or anything like. If there is then the clutch spring might be busted causing the clutch to be always engaged. In which case it'll never idle low enough not to spin the wheels. Busted clutch spring happened to me at break in.
