RE: To solder or crimp
Thats odd, i've never seen them sold like that before.. I'd normally solder bullet plugs.. however, what is under that shrink wrap? Is it wire or open hollow and cylindrical. If its wire I'd cut out the heat shrink remove the wire thats inside of the plug and put my own in.. If it's the other way then its probably designed to be crimped.

RE: Where Can I dump this one?
All right so U-Can-Do, Tucano, Sonic, Extra, aaaand the Reactor (due to cost) is out! [:'(] A few less problems out the door. I love the look of the ultrasport, and the giles but you're right about the building and electrifying. When I'm ready, I'd want air time ASAP with as little hassle as possible so it looks like the edge for me. As far as battery. My equinox goes as high as 5S so i can either stop there or run batteries in parallel for a 6-8 Setup, Hobbycity has some good deals so I'm not too worried there. Though, I doubt I'll need more than 5S on this plane unless I want to set it up for sport rather than 3D (considering how easy that switch is I might go for both [:D] I'm not ready for 3D just yet I can probably put the CG forward a bit and power it up for more sport fun [;)] (um if that's advisable) [:o] I'll be hitting the sim for it though. Gotta save up some cash too! BTW you've got some awesome planes there man! very nice stuff! Thanks for all the help too you've just set my mind at ease with my choices. [:D] P.S. I've been reading the Reviews for the edge and what do you think about the external BEC they keep talking about and what size pack would I need to power my servos? the standard 4.8v should suffice right?

RE: Where Can I dump this one?
Ah.... Thanks tIANci! That's what I figured it would fit from all the reading I've been doing! I just doubted that such a teeny thing could lug a .40 size bird around [&:] Interesting question you've asked me there too. Let's see, I started off of junk toys for about a year moved on to F27 strykers and microjets for about two years then someone gave me .35 on an Avistar. I flew that for hmmm bout 28 flights then upgraded to a thunder tiger .46 when I felt like I understood how the plane flew and got comfy with it. I just can't believe some of the stuff this plane pulls off now (inverted spins? really?) so what do I like to fly.... hard one to answer EVERYTHING so far! hehe. I'm fascinated with what I see 3D planes can do and although I've practiced on the sim feel comfy with them and can pull off some of it. I'm no where near ready for the large scale planes yet. I looooove the power and authority (not to mention SPEEEEEEEEED) the .46 gives the avistar and to be honest I know there is loads more fun to be had with that setup, but every time I power it up and i see what i can do with it I just go "wow, what else is there I can learn to do with this what is it's limit?!" So I do want to plonk it in a plane... either a fast sporty one or a nice agile 3D one! either which way I'll be happy.. I've been looking at these as a possible fit for the motor lemme know what you think when you've got the time. Some of them are too heavy for sure. I don't want it to chug around looking like it's barely flying. so watchya think?

RE: Bad day...
Wow this thread is still going? HEY Will - 3D how is that guy doing with his avistar? what did he do with the other two birds which he crashed? As for me? I've got 48 flights so far on my avistar and have began flying it really hard! Thanks for all the help with the pointers on getting my dead sticks sorted out! we finally replaced the LA 40 with an os .35FX i think it was and I flew with that most of the time! Had great fun with it got comfy with the plane and recently dropped a thunder tiger pro .46 in there (the thing is ripping my monokote off :( BUT BOY CAN SHE HALL @$$ FRIGGIN WOW! I'm stringing all kinds of maneuvers together now.. still have not figured out or tried flat spins though but in the mean time putting on quite a show with this plane! I've realized it wont knife edge properly probably because of the extra weight the rebuild put on. but thats ok I may change the rudder making it bigger that might help. I love this thing! and reading the other posts. Yes its entire possible to learn on your own I learned to fly on my own with my foamies got a sim much later and this avistar is my first and only nitro model... would I advise anyone else to go that route? NO! The point? if you have a choice in the matter wether to get an instructor or not.. GET ONE! if you don't have a choice, then fine. try to learn with a sim FMS is FREE! it will help with orientation at least if nothing else! and i agree with the other member who said part of the hobby is the club! its always more fun flying with friends than alone. EVEN building with friends is great! 4 of us put together a tower hobbies tower trainer in 12 hours 5 pm till 5 am the next morning and flew it at round 5pm that same day! great fun!!!!! don't forsake the collective! haha

RE: How old are you?
Fascinating thread :D I'm 32 flying for about 3 years I'd say total. Started out on Foamies shunning glow because of the mess and cost Recently was given a rebuilt Avistar with a .35 put 38 flights on that and upgraded to a thunder tiger pro .46 now I'm up to 48 flights and burning holes in the sky with this thing (what a blast). In return I've gotten the other guy hocked on foamies (HA! TAKE THAT) now I'm looking at bigger planes. And the cost? well... I'm pretending that I'm not thinking about it I figure if i go gas it would be cheaper for me some how, haha dunno if that will work out though.

RE: Brushless Motor Upgrade Problems
I hope you don't take the words change to mean remove and replace.. it just means to switch the connections coming from the speed controller to the motor. Example if your wires were red blue and white with red matching up to red blue to blue and white matching up to white all you would need to do is simply switch any two of them and leave one un changed so say you left the white to white then you would have red going to blue from the speed controller and blue to red again from the speed controller... if you switched polarity from the battery to the speed controller you will burn the speed controller so if you did something like that then that could be the reason it no longer works. I hope this helps.

RE: Beginner to Pro overnight?
I think it's something to shoot for! A goal to be met! I'd say go for it but don't be blindsided or even obsessed with reaching or beating someone else's skill level the point of this hobby is to enjoy it. I think once you start getting super competitive then you'll miss out on something truly great in modeling. For me, I don't compete with anyone but myself! Always try to be better today than you were yesterday. As I say, its a great goal to shoot for, however I wouldn't go off regarding him as a rival. Even with all the reading in the world and pics you can find. There is something to be said and gained just from hands on experience and the years it takes to hone that skill. Especially the little things that get over looked. Enjoy the journey concentrate more on that and less on the destination!

RE: Spoilers????
Hm this is only a guess. If you had individual control of the spoilers on each wing and moved them differently (eg. one at a time or with different amounts of deflection) they could I think in theory act somewhat like ailerons but if they both are actuated by the same amount simultaneously then they would likely do two things 1) slow the plane down 2) possibly cause a bit of a drop in altitude where as flaps can act to slow a plane down and help with lift

RE: ESC choice???
OK I'm not guru but I do believe that having too large an esc is a bad thing. One of the ESC's functions is to prevent you from burning out your motor. If you over prop a motor it will draw more current than it is rated to handle and since a motor is nothing but coils, metal and magnets there really isn't anything that it will do to shut it's self down when it draws too much current. When it draws too much current the coils over heat melting the insulation on them thus causing a short circuit. Basically destroying it's self. The ESC cuts the power to the motor when its max current rating is drawn for a given prolonged period. Now if the max current your motor can withstand is say 20 amps, your esc is rated at 100 amps and your motor draws 50 amps because you over powered with say a large battery (too many cells) and too large of a prop the ESC will not blow or cut the power to the motor because as fast as it's concerned every thing is fine! however you're motor is way past its limits and will begin to degrade. so YA find some way to find out what you're motors max current draw is find out also what size prop/fan that thing can turn and don't go past that with your ESC.. well that is unless you like fire works!

RE: can anyone help?
That looks like a horizon hobby type plane. The easy answer is yes you can put a brushless motor in just about anything. The more complex answer is, well, it's a little more complex than just putting one in there. See to run a brushless motor you need a little device called a brushless speed controller. I'm guessing, (and this is only a guess) based on my experience with the horizon hobby F27 stryker version B, that you're plane, is using pretty much the same kind of radio that I got with the stryker. That means its proprietary... Which means that you can't simply change out your parts with off the shelf standard parts. You're servos for example may be 4 wire type which horizon had built special for their planes, you're Radio transmitter and receiver will only work with only each other and the motor controller is built into the receiver unit meaning you can't remove it without taking out the receiver as well. So It's not like you can simply drop in a new motor it doesn't work that way. Well, it wont work that way IF and i say IF I'm right about your plane there. Having said that however, if you receiver is of the standard off the shelf type where you can use say standard 3 wire type servos and there is a separate (lets say J-plug style connector) speed controller and receiver combo inside the plane, then you do stand a chance of keeping your current equipment and simply purchasing a speed controller + corresponding motor dropping them in there. If not, then to go brushless on that bird you're going to have to dig into your pockets and spend a little on say, something like the "Hitec neon SS" type, 3 channel Tx (www.towerhobbies.com), which comes (depending on the combo you choose) with its own Rx, two servos and crystals for the channels which you specify. Then you'd need to get the right motor and speed controller combo with propeller spinner/adapter and propeller. A bit of glue, maybe some double sided tape. Then you'd have to get the old servo and radio equipment out of that plane drop in your new stuff while maybe having to mod the plane just a little so your new stuff would fit right and THEN you'd be good to go. Which, as i said means spending a little and abandoning your current radio equipment. The total cost of which may or may not be worth it to you or it may be worth your wild to simply upgrade totally to an other plane, something that comes with all of this stuff, ready to go. I'm not being very specific I know but I'm generalizing it so you get a ball park idea of whats involved without putting you into a panic. That looks to me like a first plane for you, so you're probably just getting into the hobby, don't want to scare you away but chances are if you're already thinking brushless then you're here to stay! I'd say join a club, if you can from where you are and start thinking about a trainer type plane! Be warned! There is money involved. If that scares you then think about the other approach I mentioned about upgrading. One thing I'd like to point out.. I only suggested the hitec neon ss Tx because its relatively cheap and comes with just about all you need. If you are truly serious Id say get at least a 4 channel type radio not a 3 channel. Ideally I would say get a 6 channel one to make things more future proof. There are some great deals here on RCU so check out the "buy and sell" section it's where i got my radio from. A lovely out-dated 6 channel futaba 6exa and i looooooove it! Got it cheap too! [:D] sadly i didn't get servos or anything else with it but with it's 6 model memory and mild programming options this computer radio was still worth it. I hope others reading this can chime in with suggestions for you and I hope I've helped in some small way. good luck!

RE: funjet setup
I rather suspect your problem here is your prop of choice. A motor with that Kv should use something around the 6x4 range that should take care of the thrust you'll need to go vertical. Stick one on there and you'll for sure feel the difference. Using a 5x5 on that motor kind of under powers you're plane, it will fly but... not to the motors full potential. Now, if your Kv was higher say round 2700kv and up you'd have to lower the prop diameter to 5x5 or 4.75x4.75 to keep the amp draw down. An almost direct result of a higher kv and lower diameter prop would be a higher top end speed. It's a balancing act, basically a large diameter prop equals more thrust or pushing power but lower speed, small diameter equals higher speed but less thrust. I don't claim to know it all I'm just parroting stuff from what I've learned reading tons of info from here and wattflyer from the Funjet and F27 stryker forums. There, I've given you something to go on [;)] so go forth and Happy Hunting! [:D] p.s. prop faves are APC and groupner from most of the community!

RE: A-10 thunderbolt /Gaunli
Hi I've only ordered from nitroplanes once. It was for a hacker motor and when i did get it, it turned out not to be a hacker, I called them up and they informed me that what I infact got was a motor that is a hacker style made from the same company making hacker off the same assembly line same specs etc but because it looks different they don't/can't call it a hacker. something along the lines of making the same product with a different name sold cheaper just to maximize sales since hackers are rather expensive due to the brand name....even though it's somewhat believe able I say WHAAAAATEEEEVER MAAAN. I kept the motor and it works fine. I don't know if that helps you any with nitro planes.... Now about that plane.. it looks just like the GWS version on tower hobbies. it could simply be a knock off who knows you'll have to check the dimentions. Chances are if its a foamy and it ships damaged you can fix it with epoxy or CA so don't trash it if they wont replace it! I've crashed my micro jet a few times one time the plane went into three pieces and I've always managed to humpty dumpty back together again (working with foam is lovely especially if you have micro bubbles, which i don't lol) If the planes parts are of poor quality you can always swap them out for the good stuff! like servos plastic parts etc. Frankly I can't see a reason why it wouldn't fly unless the foam is super weak and not at all reinforced with say carbon fiber anywhere. I've made all kinds of crap fly so get lots of advice from the other pros and think it through before you make any mods... Personally i've never bothered with the idea of "not for beginners" My first real plane was a horizon hobby F27 stryker defnintely NOT for the noob I did rather good if i do say so myself :P but I can't talk since i've been interested in flight long before i got into modeling and been at sims for quite a while it was a very smooth transition for me. You mentioned you have fms so even better for you! there are A10 models for fms but you're going to have to google around. Anyway I'm sure you can get your bird up in the air so go for it I'd look into getting better fans/ motors/ servos/ maybe even brushless motors and using proper radio equippment! that makes all the difference trust me! Good luck!

RE: which plane is better
Funny enough, some one else asked this very question a few days ago the responses were very interesting. I suggested that the person go with a Hobbico ventura instead, someone else suggested a subercub here ( http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HBZ7100 ) I wouldn't ever recommend the skyfly 2 EVER i have one and i much preferred a previous model called the red hawk. The skyfly, red hawk and i read the aerobird as well are all somewhat of poor quality and getting a good one out of the box is always a hit and miss event. I have a ventura (not the mini don't get that get the regular ventura $109 towerhobbies.com ) I've flown the crap out of it, never once crashed it and still till this day love the thing! It's a pretty decent plane and you can upgrade it later to brush-less if you like with or without lipos. It does 70 meter high loops barrel rolls (some what, if you know how) and stall turns very nicely I've flown that in heavy winds not too much of a problem at all, I've flown it high up and just killed the motor and stayed up for quite a while just on wind power I love the plane nuff said! Hope that helps.
