RE: Fleet Brotherhood
Hook me up.... I have a NIB Concept models kit don't know when I will build it but sometime soon. I am not sure of the power but I saw an Enya 240 VTwin mentioned and this might be the plane to show case my newly aquired V twin in. I know the sound would be awsome. I also have a gassser that would be a bit easier on the finish. I go by Sparky Nashville, Indiana

Thanks guys, I will let it sit for while. The other thing I thought was that the engine was rather loud with the j tec muffler. Is there something quieter? I guess I should look at the DA website. Lord knows there is a butt ton of room in the cowl. I know some of you guys like them a little noisy, I was just thinking my impression is it is a bit too much if you want loud I have a really noisy plane how about 200 cc on glow with headers only? RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
My flight report: Today was our club picnic. I showed up late as I got held up at church and arrived after all the food was cooked but plenty of leftovers were had. I had done a static test run, fixed a few issues from before so I was ready to fly I ran her up everything sounded good and looked good. I was flying without the cowl so I had bolted a 12OZ hunk of lead to the firewall to replace the missing cowl. First flight went well I was running the DA60 rich and flew for about 8 minutes. At the stall the right wind would drop, landing without the flaps. Approach speed and landing was stupid slow. Just great results. My spotter said he saw something fall from the plane during the flight. I started to look the plane over. The 12OZ lead weight had fallen off the front of the plane so I was flying it "tail heavy" but I didn't think it was sensitive in pitch at all. We checked the glitch counter to make sure all the satellite receivers were working fine. One would get relocated when back at the shop. A gas up and off I went on flight two I went in just a little on the high speed needle. After about 6 minutes the engine was getting unstable like it was going lean in the climbs and under load. I decided that i would land and check things out. I was a little too fast on the first approach and elected to go around and on the missed approach at 35 feet the engine went dead. I started a dead stick back to the runway and decided to try a 360 from that altitude to land back into the wind at about 300 degrees around the approach it stalled and hit nose first shattering the fuse fwd of the wing. I should have landed down wind. Nothing wrong with the plane just me making a bad decision in the heat of battle. I will let it sit for a while and evaluate if I want to rebuild, replace or just junk. The wing is in pretty good shape retracts are fine. I didn't break the prop! The crap glue they use in these planes is evident as well as the liteply which breaks like it is brittle. I will let it sit for a few weeks for now. If it requires an extensive rework I will glass it and paint it pink like the North Africa P-40 or more correctly the tribute P-40 that was flown in honor for the WASPs flown in the 70's I think the plane is at The Zoo in Michigan. Post crash analysis: It appears the fuel line pickup inside the tank came off despite they fact It has a barb and wire clips. Thus the reason the engine was going lean under load was the plane was nose up and starving for fuel and going lean. On the go around the fuel sloshed to the rear of the tank the engine starved for fuel and I failed to do pilot stuff to save the plane. The slightly aft CG might have been a contributing factor but I really don't think it affected the outcome. Sparky

RE: Frying Servo's
Not sure which servo I had but I had a JR Retract servo and if you read what isn't written in the spec sheet it doesn't mention performance on the 6V system. Mine would not work at 6V either. I called JR tech support which I recommend you do as well instead of posting here. they were very gracious and pointed that out the 6V issue. I stuck a Voltage regulator in line and everything worked fine. In fact I burned the retract servo up at the field when I stalled it since I transport with the gear retracted and had the plane on its belly when I put power on the plane I let the smoke out due to a stalled servo and they replaced it under warrante. I just checked the spec sheet and it says you can run 6V but it really isn't very powerful are you swinging all 3 gear on one servo? Is your plane a H9 product? Counterbalance springs really ease the load on a retract setup if yours are configured that way. Sparky

RE: NEW Top Flight P-40??? 1/5 scale
I am ready for my first flights. They will be without the cowl on my DA-60. I plan and putting a flat plate through the cowl with everything below the bottom of the cly on one side and the cly and muffler on the (hot side) other. From what I have read on this thread it sounds like the carb is getting fooled by the high pressure inside the cowl so it will be seperate from the Hot side of the engine by a baffle . I have the exhaust tubes just about 1/8" proud of the cowl. I have the CG set per the instructions (5.5" back from the LE at the fuse) were are you guys flying your CG at ? I have a Menz "S" 22x10 woody Any other ideas or suggestions? Sparky

JR DS 362 Midi servo
I was in Hong Kong last week and found a few hobby shops to go through. Helo's are bigger than Planks over there but still quite a bit of interesting stuff to look at. For the most part everything is within a $ or two of the states price and then you have to drag it home with airlines and customs. However I found some JR servos that were close out prices. So I picked up two different type of midi size servos the JR DS 3301 skinny wing servo JR DS 362 I could find info on the 3301 but nothing on the 362. I contacted Horizon and they said the 362 wasn't imported so they didn't have any numbers on it. Maybe some of you guys can help me out. Sparky

Kelly, I am aware that the GT prop is for the 80cc but I want to do some checking between the two, much smaller airframe and I would expect the DA 60 to be a little more powerful than the G-62. I will hook up my eagle tree for some testing to see. Also I can modify the props which can't be done when flown in the classes the props were designed for. It should be interesting. Sparky

I am staying with a two blade prop for racing I have two props that I will try they are custom props available from APC. One is the T6 spec prop and the other is the GT spec prop that are used in USRA racing. For just sport flying I was thinking about some wood prop. I think, but can only guess the three blade might be too much Dia or pitch. Sparky

JimKim and Nitro to burn.... I am planning on flying mine in the USRA war-bird class of pylon racers I sure hope the wing is stout. From discussion at Toledo I was assured that the wings would hold up. for more info about racing www.usrainfo.org Also I was wanting to confirm the scaleness of the full size plane. It is Rudy Frasca's plane at Frasca field only a few miles away from the TF Hq. When I went to their website I was shocked to learn the prototype is in fact shinny and that the plane as supplied is flat so once I get the stickers on I will need to paint it with a gloss cote of paint. The first time I guess that the shinny Mono Cote would have been the better choice in covering. Sparky Sparky

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
Pkf3, Be careful after a few flights (like 20) or so the sticky will start to get loose on your stick on weights (from contact from fuel) and you might run into a problem. hopefully before you get to that numbers of flights you will have started to remove weights from the nose to figure out what is the correct weight. I think you will find you are at least 8OZ over. Don't sweat it, nose heavy planes might fly poorly but tail heavy airplanes fly once. Sparky

RE: Hangar-9 Sopwith Camel Build Thread
I picked up My Camel with one flight on it at a swap meet last November. Short of some glueing the tail on and wings together It was pretty much as it comes out of the box. I installed the Servos as recommended except I relocated the throttle servo for a straighter run. A123 battery (1100Mah) behind the firewall on the left side. I changed out from I think was a 320cc fuel tank to a 240cc tank since the .72 wasn't going to need all that extra weight and fuel. I installed a Saito .72 for power. A heavy hub spinning a 13x5 prop. It has the weight box and after reading through this thread i discovered that I was tail heavy. I had a pretty good chunk of lead that I added to get to about the CofG recommended by the folks here on the thread. Well that weight ended being 16 oz! Not to worry I went out and test flew on Monday afternoon. Here in south central Indiana we have lots of rain this time of year and our field is subject to flooding so our field was a extremely soggy about 1/3 of the field had water on the surface I was sinking in about 1/2 inch when I walked so it was wet!!! Take off was about 10' into a steady 10mph breeze and needed to add some down trim and right aileron. but it flew around nicer than expected. I flew at 1/2 power so the bigger engines are not needed if you are doing scale flying. I really enjoyed the flight, overflying all the water at the field knowing full well other than landing on the little carrier area in the center of the field wouldbe very wet. After about 7 minutes the timer went off and i set up for several low approaches and learned that my idle was to high after a touch and go I reset the throttle trim lower and made a nice approach and touchdown rolled about 1' and it flipped onto its back in the soggy grass runway. I had about 1/3 tank of fuel after 10 minutes in the air. I was happy and there was no apparent damage and I know that it is a nice flying sport plane that is interesting to fly. I can't wait to get a dryer field to fly from. Now I will start testing to see how much weight I can remove from nose and keep its nice handling characteristics. I plan to make a series of 2 oz weights that i can remove to see were I end up. Sparky

At this weekends recently concluded AMA Expo in Ontario CA the subject of this post was scheduled to be discussed. I would be interested in learning first hand from some one who was present what was said. The upcoming rules affecting model aviation are something that we have to get right the first time. At last years Toledo I spoke with one of the AMA volunteers who is working the problem and there are major issues facing us and I would like to know what progress has been made. Please keep your post positive, I am a member of a SIG that fly USRA giant scale racers and am very concerned about them messing with our freedoms to enjoy our race planes. Sparky

I still have one of three that we jig built assembly line style back in the mid 80's. It hasn't flown in 10 years but is still in very good condition. Power is ST2500 with the OS carb. It was the first plane that I ever flew that went were you pointed it thanks to a superb JR PCM 10 and coreless BB servos. I spoke to Wayne a few years back at Toledo when he was in QQ's booth and I told him how much I enjoyed the plane and what a epifiney it was to me to have such such a wonderful flying plane in my life/modeling career. Needless to say it was a moving moment for both of us. Sparky
