RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
ORIGINAL: nitro-rob I starter working on the used FLM savage this weekend and found a nice treat - the differentials are beautiful. I don't know what brand they are but they are sealed, aluminum case and much beefier than the HPI ones (they are not CEN). I was pretty happy when I saw them. The truck is coming along slowly. I should have the centre chassis and bulkheads on in a few days and then the pace will slow down a lot since I don't have any servos, a receiver, hubs, tires, shocks, body and engine for it yet. There are a few little things that need to be done as well that will take a fair bit of time to get right related to the custom mid tank mod. I am quite happy with it, it will be a great truck when its done. It looks like I have until May anyways unless I take a southern vacation. As usual I am way behind on posting pictures. I will get to it soon.
You should find out what kind of diffs they are man I need some better ones

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
Hey man, I dont think you should need a rebuild kit for the 2 speed the only time you need that is if the pin in the bell part of the clutch actually breaks off or gets really messed up and if the one way bearing goes you wont have 1st gear at all it will just spin on the shaft. If the one way bearing locks on the shaft you will shredd a spur gear. (never heard of this happening before) Try backing out the adjustment screw a fair bit and watch really closely when you take them apart that there is no "mushrooming" on the tip of the "actuator" (dont know what to call that thing lol) if the tip of the actuator is mushroomed out a bit just take a fine file and clean up the edges a bit.

RE: Redcat Racing Tsunami Thread
The mt2 was going really really good till I blew the engine in my revo so just to get me by I put the tz that I had in the mt2 into the revo and the air cleaner was messed up so a bunch of sand got into the engine and destroyed it..... I was so mad so now I have to find another engine for the mt2. I was actually thinking of trying out a brushless lipo kit in it because im trying to get that thing to be killer fast.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
No it doesnt but when I run my picco I tune it by ear and overall feel of the engine more then anything and when I take its temp it says that its 170 I dont get it. I used to run the mip onboard temp guage but they always quit working I went through 3 of them they always seemed accurate. Is there a better diff for the savage xl or do they already have the good diffs? I blew both diffs yesterday lol..... good thing its fall and snow is going to fly right away ill have lots of time to fix them up.

according to the guage they were under 210 but when you do the spit test it was boiling off the water faster then you could put it on.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
Yeah thats the way it runs all the time but it seems hotter then all my other engines. As far as performance goes it runs great all the time but just hot..... I think the pinch is gone because it was cool outside and the temps were really low during break in I should have covered the head with some metal tape or something.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
I completly sealed the engine before I put it in I dont know what the issue would be maybe I did something wrong when I ported and polished it...... Oh well I think I want to put the lrp in it its just weird how the 28's have more power then the 36 that comes in it. Just about everyone I know said that the 5.9 is garbage and that they never do wheelies but mine does wheelies on command lol tons of low end power
ORIGINAL: KeithjV I have an LRP in my savage. Did you tune the engine with the tank half full or completely full? The half tank lean issue can pose a problem for tuning.
I changed the tank before I even thought of starting it. I put the ofna 125cc tank in it. You have the z28r right? How do you like it?

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
ORIGINAL: KeithjV Im not sure what the head color is on that 5.9 but do you have the temp gun set for the right emissivity? Do you have another temp gun to check it with? What break in method did you use? Is the glow plug still nice and tight?
I dont think you can adjust that flash point gun I tested it with an expensive one and my temp gun always showed a hotter temp, I used my own break in method lol top secret kidding, I use a modified heat cycle method but I think the 5.9 is in poor health now it has no pinch and little compression. I could hardly pull the starter untill I did the last passes and set up the high speed needle then the temps went high and it lost compression. I tune my picco by ear and feel to the hand and when its running really good I can hold my hand on the engine and spit only slightly bubbles when you put it right onto the glow plug. The 5.9 boils it right on top it the head instantly and you cant touch the engine but when I tune it to have good temps to the touch it is running so rich that at full throttle you can run beside the truck at top speed........ it runs great at high temps but its not going to last that way. Ill upload a vid of it right away. Oh and the glow plug is almost shot its bend out of shape a bit. Can you guys do me a favor? When your trucks are running just the way you want them to be running do the spit test for me and let me know if it boils at the top of the cooling head.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
Ok guys I have a problem here. I have a duratrax flash point temp guage and when I took the temp today on the 5,9 it said it was 201 f but when I did the spit test it boiled it off really really fast wouldnt that mean that my temps are higher then 201????? I broke in the savage today and I think the motor is half cooked now.... I cant pick up the truck with the pull start it just turns the engine over. It has less compression then my picco and I have galons through that engine...... What do you guys use for monitering your temps?

Hey what do you guys think about fuel filters? The guys at my lhs say that there no good because they affect your tuning really bad but I think that as long as you richen up the hsn there ok. Do you guys use them? I think my half tank lean went away after I put one on my mt2.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
You know man thats not a bad idea I will make a vid next time I do an engine up a bit. I dont know if it will even run lol kidding. The power will be a bit more on the high end but not alot on the low end. Every nitro I have worked on became a screaming high rpm monster but not alot changed on the low end. I think you have to mess with shimming up the sleeve to change the port timing and mess with how long the intake valve is open and when it opens. If I had some of that red putty stuff that they use in the cranks I would take a junker engine and mess with that but for now ill stick with the basics. I want to get more torque out of my engines not high rpm.... but thats hard to do. Ill post the pics on a couple mins I dont have much for before pictures but ill find some on the net.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
It took me about 2 hours total thats with taking the engine apart porting it doing some block work smoothing things out, matching the intake valve in the crank under the carb exactly the same shape as the opening in the block under the carb, rounding out the intake valve in the crank, rounded the shark tooth shaped "boost" things on the crank into the crank instead of it being a sharp edge and polished everything a bit and I added a small amount more taper to the bottom of the sleeve then I cleaned everything lubed it up and put it all back together.

RE: Official HPI MT2 Thread
Hly crap!!!! that savage is insane looking!!!!! I think it needs a bigger engine tho that looks like the 5.9 right? Now that I have the new savage the weather went to crap..... I want to break it in but I dont think im going to be able to till spring. Slayer I made that engine protector work just how you showed it :) I took apart the engine and sealed it all up I was going to port and polish it but I think im going to see if the power is enough for me untill I go and do that. When I had it apart it looks like they did do some performance work to the engine from factory just like the os 18 tz. I was going to go bashing today but the wind is gusting up to 45 mph........ I dont like the look of the savage 5t with the body on just like I dont like the slayer or slash.......
