RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Seeing Rick's .21 zipping around got me interested in assembling the hardware on mine. (The pre-built hull been sitting on the dining room table for two months!!) I think I will take it to New Hampshire this weekend so I have something to do when the wife is out shopping. I'm not sure what I am going to do for paint. I might just urethane it with a rattle can and put some stickers on it. (I hate to paint!!!!) Roger C

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Another good night at Stony Pond Thursday night!! T-Boat and Gas Hydro's were running awesome. I ended my strike on 'Nitro' and brought out the vintage .67 OPS powered Andy Brown Mongoose rigger. It ran great, albiet not too fast, but I burned thru 24-32 oz of 50% without it stalling. We need to continue leaning it out and try a couple of different props to free it up. It was like driving a sportscar around the buoys. Speaking of buoys...my son and I managed to miss'em all last night!! Not so much for Rick as he whacked #1 with his new JAE .21 rigger and sheared the boom tubes on one sponson. His rigger was looking pretty good with that new NR in it!! There's a bunch of these at Stony Pond. We should try having a .21 Rigger night before the snow flies (or the water gets too low!!) Does anyone know Charlie's e-mail address?? He took some great pic's last night and I would like to get to see them. Also there were some video cams going (Rick??)...are any of those posted somewhere yet?? Roger C.

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Rick, Here are some simple remote needles (no 3rd channel adj) from OS avail from Tower Hobbies: OS #24681900, Tower #LXGCV3 ($21-22) ;OS#26582900, Tower # LXMW56 ($18-19). You could also have Dan's order them for you. If you really want a 3rd channel adjustable remote needle I think you have to look at Aeromarine...or Bob Violett. If you need a remote needle to just use for a while, let me know...I have a couple laying around. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Rick, At Dan's I think the only remote needles we stock are for OS engine replacements. They are good needles. You might want to give Curt a call at the Hobby Counter (585-482-7850...then #4 and ask for Curt) to see exactly what we have in stock. I don't know exactly what you are looking for (plane or boat), but I use the OS .40 remote needles on a lot of my nitro boats with good success. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Rick, The two tanks should be set up with pick up tubes to the left rear corners, as close to the bottom as possible. (I normally use just plain 1/8th brass tubes instead of a 'clunk'. If I do use a 'clunk' I grind a flat on the end so it lays closer to the bottom.) The vent tubes should be as high in the tanks as possible. Put them side by side. Looking from the rear of the boat, hook the carb line to the pickup tube on the right tank. Run a line from the vent of the right tank to the pick up tube on the left tank. Last, run a line from the left tank vent tube to the exhaust pipe pressure tap. The left tank should empty first. As with any nitro tank setup the stoppers and lines need to be in good shape. If you need to see a twin tank setup...let me know and I will throw a rigger in the truck for Thursday night. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Craig, Starting the gassers made me think of a safety tip we have a habit of ignoring. When the boat is not in the Hot Pits or simply on your work table...you should disconnect the plug wire. My Gas Sport Hydro literally started with just one pop of a compression cycle when I was getting some fuel to the carb. If I was removing/tightening the prop nut and the piston popped over tdc, it could have started the same way. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
I have to say that I need to stop busting Craig's chops for using a belt starter on his Gas Mono!! My right arm is extremely sore from trying to start three gas boats all day!! I know it's not cool in the hot pits to to take the boat off the table, but my arm just isn't at a good angle to be pulling the rope when it is up that high. I also have to thank Chris Blaker for all his help over the weekend. He started, launched, and retrieved all my gassers and was great as a pit man. I heard 'Stop taking 4, 5, and 6 so wide' several times!! He got me great starts too (especially when I listened!!). Thanks Chris. Roger C

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Neil, you were missed in Elmira!! There weren't any spectacular driving incidents to 'amp' up the crowd like when you do some of your airborne 360 spins!! I did one with my Gas Sport Hydro in the final round while going down the back straight but no one even noticed because I wasn't able to get it high enough, like you do, to clear the spray. Hope to see you at Stony Pond!! Roger C.

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Very...very wet day in Elmira on Saturday. But, we got three full rounds in even with the downpours. Hey!...They are boats, no? There was a lot of stuff in the water after the storms passed thru. It was driving the electric boats crazy. The gassers just drove over it. There was an 'epic' race in Gas Sport Hydro with Stony Pond's Bob Steiner prevailing over Walt Waznicki (sp?) for a second place in one of the heats. These guys were swapping the position back and forth for several laps with Walt even bailing inside the buoys trying to make a move (illegal!!) I am sure the three boat length rule to make a pass was out the window. Very exciting and entertaining!!! Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Another good outing at Stony Pond last night. My son Tom managed to not collect any buoys!! His driving was excellent last night. It was good to see Charlie and Rick running. Rick's .21 rigger was running pretty well for the first time out. Rick...I think I saw you shooting some videos last night. If you have any of my Gas Sport Hydro, can you send me a copy...or let me know if you post them somewhere. I'll send u a pm with my email. Thanks, Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Rick, My son and I usually get to the pond around 6PM on Thursdays. I am not sure what I'll have to throw into the water. Most likely it will be a gas mono and maybe a.67 mono or a .67 tunnel. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Rick, If you are thinking of making a vee hull an inboard... the rule of thumb is to have the balance point (CG) at 30% of the hull length as measured from the transom forward. So, if the hull is 34" long, that would be 10.2 inches from the transom. Before measuring you should have the hardware/tank/radiobox/electronics in place and your pipe on the engine. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Craig...on your 'hole in the foam' picture...other than on the ends of the brass tube, where are you putting more slow set epoxy that is touching wood and not adding a lot of extra weight?? It would seem to me adding epxoy between the tube and the top or bottom would be a lot of extra weight?? Maybe you could explain?? Thanks, Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Thunderboat follow-up: It took a bit of work to get the cylinder of the Thunderboat engine. The piston was defintely scuffed (melted) and seized on the intake side but the ring was still free in the lands. It looks like the cylinder can be re-used with just some scotchbrite to remove the aluminum from cyl wall. However, I have installed a brand new Zenoah top end kit (one of the kits from Joe!!) While I cannot find any blockage in the water flow...it did get awfully hot. I'll have to go with Tom 'not seeing' the usual water spray on that last lap or two on Thursday. The top of the piston does not show any sign of detonation...so I do not think it was lean. The crankcase looks ok and had plenty of oil residue in it. I'll be running a drill thru the rudder and all the fittings to make sure there isn't a piece of goop or silicone blocking the water flow. Last, Joe's pipe is scorching the stringer. I need to clearance the stringer around the pipe at least 1/4th inch and try getting more air around the pipe by opening the front facing air intake and venting the cowl along the rear deck portion. If I don't see the Stony Pond racing team before you leave...Have a great time in Ottawa. Bring back some 'wood'!!! Roger C

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Eric...I also have an AM Predater tunnel that could be re-configured to be electic. You would have to check if the batts would cram into the radio box. Might need a mod to get two 7.4's in it. Same as the cat...$75 for the hull. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
To HeliDrop...Eric if you wanted to stay with a tunnel, I'd look at a used Top Speed 2 or 3...or even a used Dumas Hot Shot hull. If you wanted to put the electronics in (or on!!) a cat...I have a AM Mean Machine hull I'd let go for $75 with hardware. (BTW...a cat is just an inboard tunnel!! I have seen outboards on them too!!) RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
To follow-up on Neil's 'epoxy' advice...here's why: The actual strength of the epoxy itself is the same between 5 minute and 30 minute. 30 minute will soak into porous material better because it stays wet longer, hence the stronger "bond" You can make 5 minute very strong by poking holes into the gluing surfaces and clamping the objects together so the epoxy is forced into the holes. This creates little epoxy fingers that are insanely strong. I also do this with 30 minute stuff too. You can get a ridiculously strong bond if you pokes holes (ie: with a woodpecker tool or a straight pin) then use 30 minute epoxy and just before clamping use your heat gun on low to heat the epoxied surfaces just to the point that the epoxy becomes runny and then let it sit for about 1 minute as it soaks and run into every crack and hole and then clamp and let cure. (This is from a flier as posted on RC Universe) Also, there is a difference between 'hobby shop' epoxy and 'professional' grades like West's...check out: http://www.jcrocket.com/adhesives.shtml... although my assessment is that on plywood 'hobby shop' epoxy is still plently strong enough for our models. RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Craig & Neil...maybe you should try strapping in an 8oz Sullivan flex tank that has a solid pick-up in the left rear corner and a vent tube in the 'bubble' just to see if the tank makes any difference. The boat looked like it was running great. I'm thinking if it had bad bearings or an air leak, it would not maintain a good rpm for very long. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
Tom, Great vids!!! Neil...the .21 JAE looks like it is running great. How much fuel is in the tank when it stalls? What does the plug look like. I doubt that a rod issue would cause the stall...I'd look at the clunk or tube you are using in the tank to make sure it can draw the fuel down. (I assume the clunk or tube is in the left rear corner of the tank and you have the stopper at the back of the tank to get the lines as short as possible????) If there is plenty of fuel in the tank, I'd try richening it up a couple of clicks. Roger

RE: Central NEW YORK boaters
We got to see the new guys in action last night!! Charlie's big Aeromarine mono ran really well. It was pretty well 'aired out' for a large hull!! Rick dusted off (literally!!) a 45 Outboard mono. After a few needle adjustments (mucho richer!!) it was making laps around the buoys. Great looking hull. My son Tom wheeled our Thunderboat and Gas Sport Hydro's for a few tankfuls (Tom only collected one buoy. That's a low count for him!!). He did a great job driving the Gas Sport Hydro and had it cook'in. He did have one spin trying to keep it from blowing off down the back straight. The '360' rivaled Neils Rigger spin a few weeks ago!! We threw in the Cobra2 with OS power for a few runs too. It just seems a lot slower that the VS1 and TS3 efforts earlier. I noticed that it is spraying quite a bit of water off the right sponson from mid ship back. That might be an indication that the prop torque is rolling the hull bit to the right. We were using an X437/3. I think we need a weekend day to use the setup board and test a series of props to see if we can free it up. Roger
