RE: XL: front wheel drive only :'(
Thanks guys! That's exactly what it is, but I thought that only held the brake discs in place. Didn't know it was much more important. I'll be picking that screw up soon ;)

XL: front wheel drive only :'(
As you can tell I messed something up, and dunno what exactly; I only have front wheel drive now. It's not the differential because I can't hold the drive shaft still when turning the rear wheels. I'll be tearing the tranny apart tomorrow to try and figure out what's wrong, but don't know what I'm getting myself into. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Thanks in advance!

RE: how to remove a carb???
ORIGINAL: mubus sooo.... i'm trying to seal the k5.9 cuz i heard that tuning it was to be easier... i basically have the thing dissassembled except for the carb its still attached to the crank case:( i don't know how to remove it my manual just points a arrows of the carb going outwards i unscrewed the pinch bolt but still not coming off and i didn't want to pull the carb with force cuz i'm afraid to break something this is really fustrating! i never actually dissassembled the carb before so don't really know how to:( can someone please help me!:D
The retainers that the pinch bolt threads into can be a bit of a buger to remove. The way I did it was I unscrewed the pinch bolt until the head of the bolt was sticking out about 1/8", then tapped it (as if I was trying to knock it back in) with a hammer. This loosened the retainer on the opposite side enough for me to pull it out. Then I used a punch small enough to go behind the carb tube, but larger than the threaded part of the pinch bolt and knocked the other retainer out as I had the first one (but obviously from the opposite side).
ORIGINAL: aussiexl59 well i tried the shorter fuel lines,i still got same problem...its drivin me nuts!!!!!!!when truck runnin,it wont idle,so i give it some throttle.i very tiny bit of throttle, then try low speed and it doesnt seem to do any thing.i thort low speed was to make it idle?i realize idle screw is there but takes heaps of adjustment and wheels r spinnin...i have set my dxs3 temp to 300f coz the temp alarm pissin me off.does anyone out there know wot my problem is? im scared to go buy lrp .30 in case its a half dumb arse tank lean issue...or is the 5.9 a crap motor like everyone says? ive had enuff of theres problems!!!!
If I were you, I'd just set everything back to factory settings. The idle needle flush, the LSN & MSN flush, the HSN has an engraved line around the neck of the needle tube and the base of the plastic knob (the one attached to the adjustment screw) goes flush with this engraving. Adjust your needles in the following order HSN, LSN, MSN, and finally adjust the idle screw. I was having the same problem with the wheels spinning. This is a bit trickier to fix because any adjustment you make to the idle screw effects the LSN and vice versa. What I did was adjust the idle screw out (closing the carb) while holding the brake on the transmitter until the engine cuts out. Then I turned the idle screw back in about 1/8 turn (45º rotation). Finally, I adjusted the LSN so that the wheels would slowly start to spin when off the ground, but the truck wouldn't move when the wheels were grounded.
ORIGINAL: bigwaltc I never heard of that ether you need to get a 086 pipe it will make the 5.9 run cooler and the fuel lines as short as you can with the 5.9 [sm=shades_smile.gif]
Like bigwaltc said, the half tank lean that everyone is complaining about is apparently only correctable by installing a better tuned pipe. The stock pipe is exactly the same pipe from the 4.6 and obviously doesn't supply enough fuel pressure steadily. If you can't afford to replace the pipe right now, and alternative is to merely reduce the volume of exhaust by making the diameter of the stinger a bit smaller. Using high-temp hose you can accomplish this, but be careful! Don't allow the hose to go INTO the pipe! Use a 1/4" bit to drill out the inside of the hose. Now, using a dremel tool grind away the outer hose until it will fit SNUGGLY inside the stinger leaving a lip on the hose so that it can't be pushed too far inside the tuned pipe. Now start up your truck and see how it runs. If you've got too much fuel line pressure then get a new piece of hose and use a 15/16" drill bit instead. The reason I say get a new piece of hose is because once the hose has been cut to the right length it's nearly impossible to drill it ;)

Thanks Jim. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems that Georgetown is only about 30-40 mins from here. I'm going to have a week off after my refractive surgery today, so I should have plenty of time to go down there and see what they've got. I hope, for your sake, that they've got some good hobby shops around Utah. On another note, I don't much care for HobbyTown USA because of their prices. Everything seems to be over-priced IMO.

RE: engine stalling. help
A couple of things: - have you sealed the engine? - does the pistol sleeve have any deformities? Since you're experiencing the flame-out at 1/2 throttle, you should focus on the HSN. If it bogs down before it stalls then your HSN is possibly too rich. On the other hand, if it stalls out of the blue (no warning) then you may have your HSN set too lean. Make adjustments to the HSN in 1/4 turns; clockwise leans out the fuel mixture, and counter-clockwise richens it. Make sure the engine is warmed up before you assume that your adjustment didn't work. If you've checked/tried everything I've mentioned, then just standby and wait for some of the more experienced guys on this forum to lend their opinions ;)

RE: Xl disaster continues
ORIGINAL: SAVAGEJIM Just to account for that hot Texas heat, you might want to give more leeway to running a bit hotter than 255degreesF. Since you are Killeen, I can gaurantee you will see about 110 degrees outside with heat index, and thta could push your engine to higher temps, especially at 1700hrs (just about the hottese of the day). To help quench some of that heat in between combustions, you might want to go with 30% nitro because it is more volatile and will take more heat with it away as it evaporates. (The evaporation actaully also helps in better dispersing the fuel into the air to help combustion of your next powerstroke). For your engine, actually, I think you might be running it a bit richer than what ite should be. Is your engine fully broken in yet? If not, then continue to keep it on this rich side. Other than that, carry on soldier!
Well, It's only got a gallon through it. I just now got to run it for the first time since sealing the engine (I'm on my lunch break) and it seems that my tune is all outta whack now. Perhaps I didn't count the turns on my needles correctly, or maybe the engine was just leaking a LOT of air. Either way I will get it back in tune when I get home and mess with it from there. I keep seeing everyone post temps upward of 300. Well at least I know I don't need to kill the engine when it gets to 280 ;) On another note, I can't get 30% anywhere around Killeen :( The closest place is in Dallas, which is a 2.5 hour drive. Not quite worth the trip. So, here's my proposition to you Jim, if you could pick up some Byron's 30%, I'll send you the money and you could hopefully mail it to me? You wouldn't have to worry about HAZMAT shipping charges b/c the good 'ol United States Postal Service will allow you to bring in a box that's already sealed and ship it without ever opening it. Get a flat-rate box and BAM-O. We can discuss what you'd want to charge for the hassle if you think this sounds like a good proposal. Please?

RE: New engine for xl
Thanks Glen. Another question is how do you prime your engine with a pull start and the return line next to the chassis? Plugging the stinger and pulling the starter seems like it could take a minute. Why don't they make an inline squeeze-style pump for the return line? That just seems to make a whole lot of sense to me. If one hasn't been invented already I might be onto something.

RE: Steering problem...
ORIGINAL: SAVAGEJIM For this problem, you will have to tighten down on the cam-servo saver mechanism. The XL wheels are much bigger than previous Savage wheels so they have much more tire patch on the road. You will need to overcome that servo saver from camming up so that that the wheels will actually turn. Also, if your radio has dual rate steering function, turn that off.
Thanks for the reply. The dual steering function has been off ever since I realized what it was. I can afford servos... I demand all-out power to the servos when cornering. But, interestingly, I think I may have resolved the issue. I won't be able to be sure until tomorrow because it's now too dark out to drive. But here's the run-down of what happened: I was looking at my truck and playing with the wheels to see if they were binding. When I turned the truck upside down I heard a rattle. I'm a bit intoxicated, so I shook the truck for about 2 minutes before I could isolate the origin of the rattle. Low and behold it was coming from within the receiver box. Upon opening the box, here's what I found underneath the receiver battery pack: [image]http://www.enoctis.net/steering_problem.jpg[/image] The other end of this loose screw was connected to what I can only describe as some sort of steering linkage. Needless to say, I reinstalled the screw, adding a bit of loc-tite. I'll do a trial run tomorrow and post results. ;)

Steering problem...
I have ran into a steering problem tonight with my XL. Randomly, the steering servo will just fail to turn the wheels even enough to turn the truck around in a cul-de-sac (area to turn around in residential neighborhoods at the end of a street). Amazingly, the very next turn I take works as expected. This occurs when turning in either direction, but is intermittent. What gives?

I don't want to find any debri from adjustments that I make either. With that being said, I found a tutorial on how to port the sleeve of the engine. On another note, you can get LEDs with 3' leads (wires) already attached to include resistors to reduce the applied voltage (up to 12v) to the correct voltage (6v-9v). These LEDs can be purchased pretty darn cheap at www.SuperBrightLEDs.com > www.superbrightleds.com/specs/wiredLED.htm
ORIGINAL: rclugnut10 how many cells were in the flashlight??? its 1.5v per alikaline and 3 with most button cells correct me if i'm wrong... the lug
If the light utilized multiple batteries it also depends if they were in parallel or series circuit. In a parallel circuit the voltage remains the same, so three 1.5v batteries would have a 1.5v output (which would last longer than a single 1.5v battery). However, in series the voltage is the sum of each battery, therefore, three 1.5v batteries would have a 4.5v output. Considering you (Savage SS Beast) have quite a few of these LEDs, I would use one of them as a dummy. Start out running it at 1.5v, and slowly increase the voltage until it blows the LED. At whatever voltage it blows subtract 1-1.5v from that number and you'll have your "safe" voltage for your LEDs ;)

RE: Adjusting Transmission
I appreciate all of your replies. Indeed, I haven't sealed up the engine yet. I did, however, put locktite on the engine mounts and chassis. I've got a bit of advice for anyone who tinkers, as I do: don't put AT transmission fluid into the tranny, lol. I thought that rubber plug on the side was to put fluid in, which is why I thought it wasn't shifting properly... no fluid. Needless to say, the tranny isn't sealed like a real vehicle and the tranny fluid leaked out onto the brake discs and nearly caused me to crash my truck HARD. Luckily I realized in time what was happening and turned my XL quickly and made it roll into the wall rather than a head-on collision. [:D] At any rate, I am nearly at one gallon now, so I will wait until it's over a gallon before I try to adjust the tranny. Furthermore, I don't believe I am running too rich or lean on any of my needles. I've got a nice thin trail of smoke throughout the acceleration and at WOT. In addition, my temperatures stay right about 240 unless I'm really bashing hard, in which they reach 255. No one commented on the sudden loss of ability to wheely. Perhaps something came loose is what I'm thinking now. When I pull the engine apart to seal it up I'll make sure everything is fitted properly. Thanks again for your replies. I will post what changes these adjustments made once I've completed them and have given it a test run.

Adjusting Transmission
My SavageXL seems to hang in 1st gear for entirely too long before rapidly shifting from 2nd to 3rd. How in the world do I adjust the transmission to correct this? It's very uncomforting to know that I have a power house (not quite a Picco) that seems to be wasting the majority of it's power. Also, I have been able to pop wheelies for the first time today from a dead stop... Successfully popped a number of them and brought it in to check the temps because it rained today and I had to adjust the needles to compensate for the humidity. After I checked the temp, which was fine, I ran it back out and the ability to wheely had ceased for no apparent reason. Any thoughts? Lastly, my truck wants to run away all the time unless I adjust the throttle trim back on the remote. I have tried to adjust the idle screw in 1/8 increments so I could have the trim set to 0, but the adjustments I make don't seem to do anything but cause the engine to rev higher (no matter which direction I turn the screw). What the fudge? My only option is to set it back to factory settings and play with it from there unless you guys have a better idea. I love this forum although I haven't posted anything since I finally got my truck... I've been playing hard, lol. I go to work, come home and bash until dark. That pretty much sums up my daily regime, haha. Thanks in advance for any help!
