RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Casey - I am kicking myself now. I didn't even think about it before I came over, and I had planty of time while I was in Sacramento... It would have also been a great excuse to get away from family... Jose - I actually mentioned to you that I am coming over when we talked on Skype, quite a while ago. You told me about WOTR happening at same time and I added it to my trip calendar then. However, it requires me to get to Denver a week early then needed, which I am still trying to fit into our trip schdule without upsetting my other half... Will you be at WOTR? If you do, and you bring the Me-109, I will have very stron case to convince my wife to make the effort. Eran

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
I am in the USA on my holiday at the moment (this is written while in Yosemity NP) and won't be building for the next 5 weeks. However, I did had a chance to check the Sacrament Area Modelers club air-field and a very nice RC shop while I was in Sacramento. Unfortunately, due to an airshow held nearby, they were not flying, but they had a swap meet on that day and were very friendly. Below are some photos of the airfield. I hope to find some other oportunities during my visit. Any suggestions for clubs / shops to see on my way driving from here to Yellowstone and then to Denver?

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Hi Jose I really enjoyed it today. The first time in a while I had uninterrupted time to work on the aeroplane. I was thinking of gluing the belly pen, but since it is my first aeroplane with retracts I wanted easy access to all the air lines (just in case). I will be using a petrol engine, so I do not expect too much oil on the airframe. Did you finished your new ME-109 wing? Is it ready to fly again? Eran

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Suddenly I had some time today, so I concentrated on the centre section. I started with shortening the air lines for the retracts (which were way too long). I then routed the servo leads to the area in the wing from which they will protrude to the top from, and cut 4 holes, two in the "front" (first photo) and two in the "back" (second photo). I used the same method that already worked for me to protect the servo leads by using Gorilla Glue on the hole edges. I then trimmed the Fliteskin next to the landing gear as suggested to me by Jose a while ago, to minimise the damage if the retract is torn off. I trimmed the fibreglass centre section cover and made 6 spruce mounting blocks. I am using screws (as commonly done to hold engine cowls) to attach the centre section cover. Overall I am quite pleased with the result, still need to add two more screws at the back end of the centre section cover to get it to conform properly to the wing. I also obtained today the dowels from my handyman neighbour and will probably do that next.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Too busy to find time to build, but I did receive the package from Dynamic Balsa. While on the subject of Dynamic Balsa, Brian was very helpful with my queries while deciding what to buy. I got the "Platt" ME-109 sport scale cockpit kit, Revi 16B gunsite and some seat belt material. All far better then I would ever be able to produce myself (well, if it wasn't available I wouldn't bother). Thank you Casey for the advice

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
I attached the radiators to the wing and had my first radio activated operation of the radiator flaps. I had to do some minor adjustments, but I think it is working fine.

RE: GP Waco?
The DLE 30 will provide you with endless amount of power. If scale flying is not your thing, then the WACO with this sort of power is crazy fun I am flying my WACO with the MVVS 30 and take off run, if you gun it, 30cm... The "problem" is the torque, swinging the aeroplane the moment the tail is up (instantly), but once the wheels are off the ground you have full rudder control back. You can obviously do a slow gentle take off... Vertical climb is unbelievable, snap rolls are crazy, huge fun.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Some more progress, I painted the wing under the radiator flap and the bottom of the slats. The paint in the photos is wet, so the colour is not uniform.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Casey - I was looking into it, but the only fuel tubing I had that evening is Tygon (for petrol fuel), and it was not flexible enough. The Gorilla glue solution worked very well. I did apply "ring" of glue on both sides and on the edge itself and the result is very smooth.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Some more progress, I have now trial fitted the second radiator, and started to think about routing the servo leads. To protect them from the sharp edges of the Flitsking, I am trying a ring of Gorilla glue. I made a circular "hatch cover" over my cuttings above the torque rod and had a look at the wing bottom cover.

Finally made some progress and got the first radiator mounted by the screws. It is held stronger then I thought. I may be able to do without the silicon. Started to work on the other side

Thank you Casey, I think I found it. Much cheaper then I expected. Brad3301 - Thank you for the kind comment. I have a 5 years old girl and she is also a chatterbox.... So, I had it planned to make some progress today, but as always, something just came up... It will have to wait for the next opportunity. Eran

Casey - I hope all comes out good with your son, these type of events put everything in perspective. I was not aware of your refurb thread, I have just subscribed :-) I was looking at a place to buy the cockpit kit, but could not easily find a place that have it. Any chance you remember where you got it from? Eran

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Busier the expected weekend, so nowhere the amount of progress compared to what I planned. I think I have a solution to how to mount the radiators. I made balsa mounting plates with blind nuts. I glued them to the ribs and the wing skin (the mounts are longer then the hole I made in the skin). I will be using 10-32 plastic wing mounting bolts and small amount of silicon all around the fibreglass radiator. This will allow to maintain the mini servos if needed by cutting the silicon and opening the bolts. I took Hans, my pilot, to the airfield today, Everybody who saw it were very impressed.

I got few free minutes, so finally connected the wing flap servos. In the photo you can see the 3 position flaps / slats, currently utilising full throw. Obviously nothing to see with the slats as I still have no idea how to connect them, but I can see the rods moving

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
How excited was my 5 years old daughter to open the mail today (OK, I was too) . In the large box arrived my Swiss pilot (named by my daughter "Hans"), made by Scale Aircrew Supplies in the UK. When I contacted Mark from Scale Aircrew Supplies few weeks ago, all I had in mind was to get something "good enough". I am not into scale to a level requiring too much of an accuracy. I would have been happy enough with the German pilot that he already had as stock item. Lucky for me, this was not good enough for Mark, who did some research and made this amazing pilot from different bits and pieces he had, to better represent Swiss Me-109 pilot from circa 1943 (and he custom made the seat parachute). On top of looking awesome, the pilot is much lighter then I expected. You can probably tell that I am very impressed. As you can see, Hans was not impressed at all to see his empty "office". It will be a while before he get it furnished, Talking about the cockpit, I cannot find 1/5 scale Me-109 cockpit "side panels" and a seat. If anyone know where I can get them (I have the front instrument panel from Jose), please let me know. I also started to work on control rods for the flaps servos moving the torque rod, but was interrupted before I had time to get anything done. More hopefully coming soon. Eran

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Nothing wrong with it, but it is easier to set up servo throw with servo per channel. If I have to I will use Y leads. Eran

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Jose - No binding or flexing, but could not get full movement holding "up" flap against the wing and proper "down" from the maximum throw on the screw attached to the torque rod. I think that the screw is too "leaning back" in the spar web direction and I do not get it to push the control rod in the correct angle. Anyway, this is now resolved with the additional servos. The last 3 photos show the 3 position flap. The only down side (except of the additional weight) is that I am now using all the available 11 channels (avoiding Y leads).

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
I went with servos in the radiator because I cannot get the torque rod to operate the flap satisfactory. I spent few hours trying different length and geometry push-rods and concluded that I must have done something wrong. Probably the angle of the 4-40 bolt attached to the torque rod. Eran

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Unfortunately didn't have the time I thought I will have today. All I managed to do was to have a first look at how to position the mini servo in the radiator. I am not sure yet how to attach is so it will sit as low as possible, I was even considering using silicon to attach it directly to the fibreglass.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
It is time to gain some momentum back into this build. The pressure test went very well. I had ~90PSI after 48 hours. After that I managed to retract few times with the remaining pressure without a problem. If I just had an idea how to fix the bay walls... This will have to wait for inspiration. After this success, I removed all the radio gear from the wing and am back to the radiator flaps. With the time left today all I managed to do was to hinge the second radiator and the flap. Now both are ready for servo installation.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Finally recovered enough to face the Me-109 again. I had a nasty flu. Today I was looking into the retracts air leak at the "retracted" position. I added washers to all mounting screws (between the wood and the gear) of the right retract (which I was suspecting the wheel centre pin touching the wing skin). To do that, I had to cut holes in the skin to reach the screws. I am happy to say that this has resolved the issue. I made quite a few retracts and extracts and could not repeat the problem. I also somehow managed to eliminate the programmable "slow down" of the valve which was wasting huge amount of air. The problem is that I don't know how I did it. I pressurised the system to 100 PSI and will leave it for 24 hours to check for leaks. I also received the Hitec HS-5085MG Mini-Servos I ordered for the radiator flaps. I will look at a way to integrate them soon. Jose - Do you know how demoralising it is to see you build the wing that quick? I had no chance to congratulate you on the first parts for the Ta-152. Looking very good. You are not letting us enjoy the beauty of it with the small photos you post.

Final note on the MVVS 30 install. I run it for 10 minutes on the ground and then took the WACO for couple of 10 minutes flights. Just awesome. Plenty of power with the 18x8 laminated wood prop.

RE: Another Fliteskin ME 109 build thread
Thank you guys, didn't gave up on it yet I was quite annoyed yesterday. I am not "saving" when buying equipment. I thought that the Jet-Tronics electronic valve will be the best and will save me setup issues and weight. It turned out to be headache, with the speed control option unusable and now I have this "leak" when retracted. One thing I was thinking of yesterday night was that maybe, when retracted, the wheel touch the bay floor before the cylinder reach the end point and this may cause some of the issues with the air keep on "leaking". I will need to investigate this further. Jose - may I ask what is the brown covering on your aileron?

RE: GP Waco?
When it worked, it was a lovely engine. However, I found it very unreliable, constantly required re-tuning of the high end. It is a very common issue for this specific engine (The FG-20) and much is written on it in different forums. After very long battle with it, I had enough and this is why I replaced it with the MVVS. One only other thing is the power. I will rate this engine as a ~1.10 and not a ~1.20 engine. Because I do like the engine (the sound is fantastic), I didn't give up and I asked a friend to modify it to take Walbro carburettor. Few people on the net did it and reported that it solved the problem. I think that this engine was victim of too small and fiddly carburettor (the original which is similar to glow fuel carburettor).
