RE: JET LEGEND VIPER BUILD THREAD
Hey guys probaboly from the grass, I noticed some very small cracks on my flex plates. Both have a crack, about 3mm long coming from one of the retract bolts. Does that mean its time to replace them? If so can they be made from a carbon fiber sheet myself? ANy suggestions on where to get said sheet? Thanks!

?? G force doesn't make you maintain level flight. As for the rest of your post no idea what you are saying. "A level 45 degree turn has a loading of 1.41 G's, or a level 60 degree turn - 2 G's" G force is a function of speed and turn radius, not bank angle. I can make a turn banked at 45 degrees and have 1 G or 9 Gs depending speed. A change in direction is an acceleration, and that is then divided by 9.8 to get the factor of normal gravity you feel. To get turn radius, you need either degrees per second and speed, RPM, or the arc length of the turn.

Calling a jet engine a turbine is like calling a car engine a piston.

RE: The New F86D Dog Sabre
Cool man, I also fly from grass and my are connected, by a mounting board I made for all the stuff liek UAT and fueld pump etc, Yes that former is weak though, but the weakest point is the main gear. I just trippled up my wing formers around the spar and gear, and also glassed my wings. Just from transporting the wings I would get crackes in the sheeting, mine was brittle for some reason. Problem solved.

RE: Is this FOD bad?
Thanks guys for the responses, I will listen for changes in sound on the rabbit. I didnt think it looked to bad but needed some input. As for my other turbine, a few hundred bucks later she's got a new compressor and ready to go! I know one of the main reason my other turbine got beat up so bad is that there is a hatch on the bottom of the jet where the turbine installs that is very flimsy, the just acts like a vacuum across the runway. ALso, I had the front gear give out a couple of times and the wheel well is open inside the fuse, so a double whammy! So I know what I need to do but I was shocked that grass and dirt that can get through the FOD screen could beat up the compressor like that. I really think it is due to this drought, the grass is dead (not dormant) so it flakes up, and the dirt is exposed.

It was running fine when I shut ti down, I just happened to decide to have a look at it after my other got beat to crap by grass and dirt due to this drought. I never noticed anything on that one but it was way worse!

RE: Is this FOD bad?
OH yes I do run a FOD screen, these nicks look like things that could fit through the fod screeen, trying to decide if this turbine needs sent in or not.

Is this FOD bad?
Here are the pics, my new rabbit. Decided to check it out and noticed it has some small nicks, and there is some slight scoring around the compressor. Is this normal or is something else going on? I recently sent in another turbine that had way more fod due to grass and dirt getting sucked up in it over 40 flights during this drought we have over here. So decided to check out the rabbit to see how it looked after 3 runs and almost cried when I saw the nicks and rubs. Is it normal to get some nicks, have some rub marks, some scoring etc.. if flying off grass or using jets that have a low intake on ashpalt? I flew this one on asphalt but its a newer runway and is very "gritty". Let me know if I should send this in :( Also, is fllying off dirt/grass runways bad? Normally we have nice grass runways but due to the rought lots of stuff getting sucked up, dead grass flakes, dirt. Seems these things are very fragiile. 1st and 2nd pic, 3 nicks on a blade, 3rd pic is of the rubbing, 4th pic blade at 6 o clock

RE: WHY GO EDF IF YOU HAVE TURBINES?
I forgot another important thing. There are is one airframe that I would rather fly EDF due to the risk, and in some cases the lack of turbine support. For example. a ME-262 is a cool jet but very difficult to fly. there are numerous vids on youtube of all sizes of me-262 doing the same slip stall take off and plowing in, including a twin turbine powered one. So I would rather have a 262 in an EDF version becuase its too easy to crash these, as even a small thrust differential can cause that slip stall crash. Definition of slip stall: Air craft pulls up, appears to fly ok but suddently rolls hard one way, then the other, and yawing all over then dumping over and going straight down. :) I've seen some cubs do it somewhat but the 262 seems to have its own special take off stall. Also, anything with thrust vectoring I would rather keep EDF as I tend to be way more risky with it.

RE: WHY GO EDF IF YOU HAVE TURBINES?
I recently started flying turbines, not low end slow crap either. Not the fastest through. I was told repeatedly how different it is, how much harder it is than EDF, how I probably wont succeed. I asked about a larger f-16 EDF to get me ready for my turbine f-16, I was told no comparison. Now that I have flown both of my turbine jets, I strongly disagree. I love EDF. I am not as fond of foam other than my twin fly fly mig-29, but there is a lot of fiberglass stuff that is just auwsome! I recently put my f-86D up against a foam habu that is on 5s. While I was faster, it was not that much faster at all. IMO that little jet could be harder to fly as it turns into a dot, I can go twice as far out with my larger turbine and maintain the profile. And for the geeks who may report me, NO I was NOT racing. We just flew together at high speed, very safely and maintained good distance.

RE: The New F86D Dog Sabre
I gave the new front trailing link strut a try. It seems I can always complain! The spring inside it is too weak for the weight of the jet. On take off, the strut bottoms out and the AOA goes negative makeing for long take offs. On my 3rd landing, the strut bottomed out and the nuckled dug into the grass when it went through a slight dip in the ground, once again bending the piano wire back. It kicked up a lot of dirt, the turbine ran for a few then I shut it down, not a lot of dirt inside the fuse so hoping the turbine didnt get too much. The landing was too fast but still. But it didnt bounce! I'll go to ace hardware and find a spring. With the right spring, this will solve many issues.

RE: WHY GO EDF IF YOU HAVE TURBINES?
I have a composite answer: I have EDF that out perform my turbines in terms of speed, so sometimes I like to go fast. Also I like to fly smaller fiberglass stuff that is better suited for EDF. I also find my EDF are harder to fly so I like to keep my skills sharp. I own a FEJ f-16 and a F-86D, neither compare in speed to my HET a-10, and both my turbines are easier to fly and land. I think this thread topic hints at the concept "turbines are more elite" but I disagree. Also, not all turbines are equal. If you fly boomerangs and shockjets all day you are not in the same boat as someone flying a high end, high wing loaded EDF. This is too much overlap to compare in general. Like EDF, turbines have a wide range and not all are equal. I have a friend with a falcon 120 witha ram 500 and performs worse than a habu 32, and lands much slower at that! Not complaining, but giving an example.

RE: Are we Geeks?
Like many hobbies and activities, there are Geeks in it which then give the perception of it being geeky. I've seen some hosting events at my club that make me want to go hide with how serious they take it. People who take this stuff way to serious definately fit into this bucket. People who go around trying to report people for percieved rule violations, memorizing AMA codes etc are Geeks. People who try to justify buying some expensive Heli for a practical use are also geeks IMO. People who want attention from others by showing off their parkzone mustang or whatever and act like its the same as the real thing are geeks. I feel we can all have fun, still have girlfriends, still be safe, Go to the gym, and fly/Drive RC without being geeks! Notghing wrong with the above but just getting geeky IMO. The same concept exists in car shows, where a geek may show up with a 2012 dodge charger bought off the shelf to display amongst the home restored classics. Or one thing I noticed, we get invited out to a raceway to fly our jets on a perfect runway, and the geeks show up with 450 sized helis as if that is the purpose. That one ticked me off be because I dont need that crap flying around while I fly my jet. I do have a heli and love it though! PS I am an RC geek because I fit in the another non mentioned bucket, I obsess over it and build custom electronics for my stuff. This is geeky for sure but in a different way. Like this custom sequencer for my canopy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9mPAVMuTsE&feature=youtube_gdata

RE: Redundant RX packs are they overkill?
I use two life packs on a Y cable. Some put diodes on them so a dead pack cant drain the good one (Amps out only). However, my experience is that introducing diodes or other devices increases the chance of failure as these devices can go bad themselves. I feel that if a pack dies the good pack will keep it strong enough to finish the flight, I found a bad pack is usually bad as it wont put the A needed and the V drops, so the good pack can carry it.

RE: Flyeagle f-16 1/8 scale questions
I put min originally at 20 then moved up to 25. On high rates, with the radio set at 80% travel, it rolls fast enough to probably rip the wings off LOL. Its fun with the lights but dont do it on your 3rd flight in the dark LOL. The lights on mine are not as bright as they claim, he told me 2 mile visiability, no way. Maybe it wasnt dark enough, but all I couldl see is the lights and a slight profile of the jet. If I had the balls I would wait until darker but if the lights go out.................................................. Oh No.

Falcon, that rocking was caused by me. On that final, I stalled it out and it elevatored down way too low, I hit power to bring it back on track. The 20 mph wind and the drag from the doors caused and stall caused my to go behind me out there, so I had to bang the stick to get her back. I trie dto reduce to 1/4 throttle on final and it stalled. 2nd landing of course I came in too fast. Thirsd landing I got it! My probem is I like to do a gear check, but I am almost ready to stop doing because of how unstable it is in the turns with the door down. Do the real f-16 doors go back up with gear down? Attached is a pic of my elevator trim after landing, is that right or does that indicate nose heavy?
