RE: New giant scale rudder servo
We are all on the same page. Linear output is being worked in parallel (no pun intended) with rotary. Speed, Yes that is the plan. At this point, quite frankly, the speeds that this thing can attain is starting to break airframes. With the force and acceleration, I am not able to keep a set of pull pull wires tight. I have already jarred the hinges loose in the test fuselage. I am shooting for 1000 in-oz at 0.10 sec/60 deg. More details as they become available. Regards, L

Here is a proposed configuration for rotary output. 1000 in-oz torque 0.096 sec/60 degree 5" arm shown. Regards, L

RE: New giant scale rudder servo
All correct Roberto :) I had to convince my mech eng that my control system could handle the spring-mass characteristics of a pull-pull cable arrangement. He is convinced, it's his fuselage. I was also using the rig to burn in the servo, so far 20 hours of run time, in 2-3 hour batches. I think the take away is with 12oz at 9.25 inches = 111 oz-in torque at the hinge then with a 1.9 inch control horn gives 210 ozf at the servo output, nominal, for hours on end. Regards, L

RE: New giant scale rudder servo
Installed in 50cc Extreme flight Yak fuselage. 12oz hanging at 9.25" from rudder hinge line. Sorry about the video quality and the shop mess. This is after 1 hour continuous on a half charged 2 cell lipo. If the video were of better quality you could see the rudder out-accelerate gravity on the down stroke This test replicates deflecting the rudder 45 degree from 0 when going 75 mph (for an hour). New giant scale rudder servo development
I've been developing a linear servo for rudder actuation. -Real 576 ozf moving (holding power will break airframes) at 4.5A stall on 2 cell LiPo (20mA at idle, 300mA at minimal load(swinging the rudder at the wind)) -0.08 sec/60 deg. -No less than 12 ball bearings. -Composite frames for rigidity. -Active gear wear compensation. -Non contact absolute position feedback, NO POTS. -The position information is updated more than 1000 times a second, resolution of 0.001 inches. -Return to center is measured to 10 thou (that's the thickness of two sheets of notebook paper). I'm seeing if there is any real interest. I have a short video of the creature moving under it's own steam http://youtu.be/wTSMG8PjwMw Thanks in advance. Regards, Leonard

RE: New giant scale rudder servo
With this design one could replace two high torque servos with a single. You are not purchasing an extra servo and it's connection hardware, you also use less energy during flight get more speed and more torque for your trouble. You wont have pots to go bad, plastic cases that distort under load, micro gears that wear and develop slop, the list really does go on. The servos design as we have today hasn't changed in 50 years. It is time. :) Regards, L

Blackberry Torch and ATT question.
Will one of you fine folks look under "Manage connections" then "Mobile network options" and tell me if you have something like "Preferred connection option"? Apparently ATT has this option removed from their build of OS6. So what you say. I say well poo. It seems according to Level 2 RIM technical support without that option I will always be charged "data" regardless of Wifi connection or not. I noticed that if I disable the "mobile connections" and just use Wifi I am still using bits of my data plan. Basically I was lied too. And so where you. Att is awful. Lesson learned never again. RE: Open letter to Horizon Hobby and JR Radios
First, thank you all for sharing your opinions. I respect every ones right to express their own beliefs. My take. Horizon Hobby/JR Radios has handicapped their own "flagship" premier product by offering the same if not more functionality in a slightly different form-factor at half the cost of the original. They have set a pricing expectation going forward (dollar per function). I believe they have marketed themselves right out of the premium pricing game for years to come. Given the cyclical nature of our hobby e.g. buy the latest and keep it until something irresistible is available then upgrade. JR has alienated a segment of their Tier 1 consumers. I'm sure this was a calculated risk. I'm also sure this will turn on them in the end. Each to their own. Regards, Leonard

Open letter to Horizon Hobby and JR Radios
I am a registered JR 12X radio owner. I must express my disappointment in Horizon Hobby and/or JR Radios marketing decision to release the 11X at half the cost of the 12X having comparable features. This action has destroyed any resale value I might have in the 12X. Your action will affect my future purchases. I want to know what Horizon Hobby and/or JR radios intend to do to add value to current 12X owners radio sets? Regards, Leonard

Lehner Motor bearing
After my latest incident with the Schubi and the Lehner. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558172 I thought I bent the shaft. I sent an e-mail to the vendor and the manufacturer to see what I could have done. Lehner e-mailed back that I should send it back either direct or to the vendor for service. I got this e-mail on Sunday which was encouraging. I then contacted the vendor. This is when it gets interesting. I was speaking to the vendor and asked the only two questions that really matter. How much will it cost and how long will it take. The first answer wasn't a real surprise, a downer but no surprise, he said 50-75% of original cost. The next answer is the stunner. I asked how long it might take, there was a pregnant pause on the other end of the line then I was told I should (SHOULD) have the motor back next summer. Let me say that again........ NEXT SUMMER!!!! What the...... Well faced with this info I found someone to run-out the shaft and see if we could straighten it out. Well the shaft is dead strait it turns out to be a bearing. Whew.... Big load off my mind. I am going to replace the bearing myself as I am not only capable but qualified to do so Here is the crux of this thread. I contacted the Manufacturer for the class of bearing they spec for the motor and the air has been remarkably still. Not a peep from them for 4 days now. Remember they e-mailed me back the same Sunday I inquired about sending in my motor and paying them for service. However when I ask what class of bearing is used so I can fix it myself. Not a word. Needless to say they wont be buying any more sausage or beer with my money. This is customer Disservice. Leonard

On Saturday at FJ I took this video of the EVJet. If you run doppler on the audio you come up with around 108 mph. Video: http://media.putfile.com/BVM-E-jet-speed-run59 Audio: http://media.putfile.com/BVM-E-jet-speed-run Doppler output: http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=3/7208431989.jpg&s=x11 Leonard

RE: EuroFighter Typhoon Question
Hey thanks guys. I've got the manual. It looks like my SWAG was correct :) Never thought to look at the mfg. site [8|] So they do use the fuse center, truncated to a rectangle, in the CoG calcs. As opposed to running the wing LE to a point in the center of the plane. Very good. Well If off to see if she will rotate.

EuroFighter Typhoon Question
Could someone with a turbine EF Typhoon please give me some information regarding the CoG location relitive to the leading edge of your main wings. Also could you give me the dimentions of the plane (WS, Length, cannard LE to wing LE, etc). I am scratch building a Typhoon and have run the numbers for the CoG and I get wildly different locations dependant on using the fuselage between the wings as a lifting body, using the cannard, using the cannard and the fuse, etc... Your help is greatly appreciated. My planes specs: WS 36" Length 52" AUW 8 lbs Thanks in advance. Regards, Leonard
