RE: first glider
Ive been thinking about a foam powered glider to take with me when out at the beach and the Radian Pro looks like a winner but then I saw this Flyzone Calypso at RCX last weekend. There really wasn't any information about it other than seeing it there perched on the stand and the standard product sheet. The Flyzone rep didnt have any additional info so I thought I would ask the RCU community. It looks really good but does anyone have any experience with Flyzone products as compared to Parkzone with regards to materials and construction. RE: Flying sites on Kauai?
I've stood at that railing watching birds soar hundreds of feet below and realized they were hundreds of feet above the canyon floor. That was some view.

RE: mounting body
I like to use standard size servo horns because they hold pretty good, provide a clean looking mount and make it easy to remove the body when you want because the surface is smaller. I simply grind out the center of the wheel, drill a small hole in the shoulder to hold the body clip, shave the top flat, and cover with Velcro [IMG]http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd59/evlwevl/78f51bd3.jpg[/IMG]

RE: All the hot women in this hobby ...
This is a funny thread cause We see all the smiling scantily clad models at the R/C shows and at various r/c related events and you think why not? Women should be involved in this hobby, but it kinda doesn't work exactly like that. When I was dating, I used to let all the women in my life know that I was into R/C and it took up a lot of time whether I was on the slope with my glider, at the pond with my boat or the park with my trucks. When I met my now wife, she was so exited to join me at the lake and she'd read a book while I raced my little boat around. Then she would join me at the glider club and patiently wait as I flew my gliders at the contests. After I put that ring on her finger, the next few outings were filled with "are you done yet? I wanna go home" and "How much longer do you want to be out here?" and that's when I realized how it really works. It is a lone man's hobby for me now and I wouldn't have it any other way. Its my time to clear my head and not deal with family matters for the few minutes I'm enjoying it and that's the way I'm going to keep it.

RE: First rock crawler
I'm all about buying used now, and I recommend looking for a used axial if you can afford to do so. There are many people out there that buy a crawler, try it out out and quickly find its not their cup of tea and just want rid of it so they can get back to what they really like. If your patient, You can find a lot of used trucks that have almost no run time on them with tons of hop up parts for less than half the price they have into them, I know, I just bought another one. There my .02.....keep the change[;)]

RE: axial wraith
its not just Axial, its most manufacturers. I bought a Traxxas Slash 4x4 and a steering block pin backed out on the first day, it was gone in the sand and the truck was shelved for the rest of the camping trip. I also bought an HPI Crawler King and had a screw come right out of the axle before I even took it out of the box. It happens...... I now go through every screw on my RTRs or simply buy kits where I know they will be tighten correctly. Of all my trucks and cars, and I have pretty much every make you can think of, Axial has the some of the best quality control around. You may have just gotten what we call a "Friday" truck or trucks.

RE: what are you scared of?
Only a few things scare me. One of them is being tied or restrained where you cant move and or being buried alive like in (Kill Bill). Falling into a hole or crevasse where you get wedged in and cant move is also at the top of my list. I have also been 5 feet from a Brown Bear while camping in Sequoia, but that really didn't scare me as much as I thought it would.

RE: What do you drive?
nah, no exotic stuff here, this is a 2275cc; Brazilian Case, Bugpack crank, rimco rods, Dual 45 Dells, 125 engle, 044 heads. I built this one back in 1997 for around $5k after the first one I had built blew up on the dyno, when a rod came apart. Engines were cheaper back then I had this one dialed down a little for the street, its got about 5k miles on it now and it puts out around 150hp @6500 with a rancho tranny and close welded gears. I call it my stump puller.

RE: RC games for ps3
Unless your able to use an actual r/c type controller, an rc game on the PS3 might as well be anything from Need for Speed or Gran Turismo. I play vrc on my computer using my Spektrum DX3R and it is really a good racing sim. If they ever get around to finishing VRC-Pro, its going to be one bad-A** sim with offroad and electrics as well with a multitude of setup configurations.

RE: Im Seriously On the Verge of Losing This Hobby
Your dads sound like smart men. I started spending money on R/C soon after high school and my dad always stressed how important it was to save money. I wish I would have listened to him because I'd be on easy street right now instead of slaving away at work all day. I blew a lot of money on R/C and other hobbies instead of concentrating on earning and saving money. I think hes telling you to save because hes been there, he knows what can happen. You dont want to end up with an awesome R/C collection and living with your parents at age 40.....believe me, I know many who are like that now. I eventually got around to saving in my 30's, bought a house, got married and had kids. I have spent around 12 Thousand dollars in my lifetime on just R/C alone, not to mention other hobbies I have. I'm not saying to give up on R/C altogether, Im just saying to listen to what he's telling you and really think about it. There will always be time for RC later in life and you will find you have more disposable money to buy better R/C cars and trucks later on. Bottom line, if your frustrated now after breaking a few insignifican parts, this hobby isnt for you. You might want to think about leaving the trucks behind and getting into R/C sailboating instead, Ive never broken a part on my sailboat, well except for the time I accidentally stepped on it. [:)]

RE: RC stuff....buying vs. Selling
Attending RCX last month was really an eye opener to how the hobby/RC industry is doing. Just a few years ago, it was shoulder to shoulder through the isles of that show and it was actually difficult to see everything because of the sheer number of attendees. It was sad to see how poorly attended the show was this year at least on the day I was there. Numerous companies are really expanding their product lines and the retail prices for everything seem to be going up and up while I see a lot of people cutting back on new purchases and starting to look at used items which I never used to do till now. So the wife is keeping me on a tight hobby spending leash these days. Long gone are the days when I would go out and buy a new T-rex 450 and DX7 without even thinking about it. Now that I sell stuff in order to help with other purchases, I usually start at the 50% rule and will work down from there. I will hold my price when I have something that is still in the box which happens a lot when your into every aspect of the hobby as I am. In recent years, I've sold boats, planes, cars, radio equipment and everything else in between but have never made a profit, I actually almost broke even once. Ive just learned to face it, no ones getting rich selling R/C stuff these days. Lowball offers don't usually anger me, everyone always wants a steal, and It's always my decision whether or not to sell it for whats being offered. I pride myself in not selling junk so I don't feel bad if something isn't selling at that price I'm asking. The only thing that annoys me is when I see a lot of cars/trucks that are bashed and worn beyond belief with pricetags that easily justify buying new for a little bit more, lets be realistic about what your selling. My RC collection is always kept pristine and when its time to sell something, I want to make sure the buyer knows what hes buying and I will take the extra time to correct any issues with the item even at my loss so when he or she receives it, they are happy with what they bought and it works as advertised, lets face it, money doesn't grow on trees and I don't want any enemies or karma coming back at me. I will hold onto items for a very long time until the right buyer with the right offer comes around because I'm in no hurry and I have the room to store it till someone wants it more than I do. The most difficult thing for me in selling stuff especially lower ticket items is when you finally sell something and you realize, ebay, paypal, and the postoffice walked away with more money than I did, that's what is upsetting.

RE: Where are the reviews on the Fling DLG?
Ive only found every post on the 48" and 2meter fling which I'm not interesting in. The DLG fling seems to be a ghost of a sailplane because I cant find anything about on this site or others, must not be very popular. General Google searches have only yielded hobby shops that sell the plane.

Where are the reviews on the Fling DLG?
I've started looking at getting into DLG and just for the heck of it came across the Fling DLG. I cant seem to find any reviews of it. At this point ,Ive been going through ever post I can find about DLG's to separate the truth from fiction. I don't have nor do I want to spend more than $400 for a DLG. I would also like to do some light lift sloping off the dunes at the beach with it. I'm still deciding over a built up wing vs. balsa over foam and R/E vs A/E/R. I know I don't want a moulded plane as i like to repair rather than replace if needed. A few Planes I really like are the Hyper 2 DLG from NES or the Garnet, solo or Catia from soaring USA. I do like the Gambler from Wright Bros, but with my severely busy schedule now, it would end up like every other plane hanging on my ceiling, which is incomplete.

RE: First thermal?
You always remember your first thermal even if you weren't looking for one. About 12 years ago a friend and I purchased vectored thrust planes that was supposed to guarantee some actual sticktime to beginners. They relied on 2 small motors handling Left/Right banking and a cambered wing for lift. To climb, you held both motors on, and to descend you just didn't touch anything and the plane would glide down by itself because there was no rudder or elevator. We launched these together at about 100 ft up or so we noticed that they were sort of rocking back and forth we kept asking each other, are you climbing? We both said no, but we noticed the planes circling around kept getting smaller. This continued till we realized we were out of range and had no control. We were at the mercy of the thermal gods as the planes continued to get smaller and smaller and drift along so we followed them downwind. After a while of sweating it out, my friend just gave up and threw down his controller. I continued trying to work the sticks and eventually we got control back and all I could do was just continue turning downwind and hope I didn't hit another thermal. I ended up landing about 40 ft up in a tree and knocked the plane down with a pine cone. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. That was the day my obsession started.

RE: Soaring in Orange County
You might want to contact [link]http://www.1hss.org/[/link] in Costa mesa for more information. When I lived down there, my favorite spot was in Pomona just slightly north of OC known as Temple Hill [link]http://home.earthlink.net/~windrider007/index.html[/link]. The lift was always great, the hike through the hills was a little rough but not too difficult. I think they still fly out there. I also have seen sloping off the railing in the Long Beach. Good Luck

RE: glider kits
I also recommend building a Gentle Lady if your looking for a floater. They are easy to modify to take better winch/histart launches such as adding carbon fiber on the spars or modifying to a bolt on wing. One of my favorite ships was one that my former club used for a 1 design contest. That was the Laser Arts Soveriegn. Its a pod and boom ship with a flat center wing panel and very easy to build with the puzzle like constructed pod. I added a center spoiler for more control. I dont think they sell them anymore but they do still make the jester which is the same ship but with a full fuse. I just remember the quality of the wood being very good on the laser art planes. Phase 3 Phoenix II 2meter EP glider
I've started looking at the radian Pro as a possible new stable to my collection. I then see this new Phoenix II [link]http://www.hobbypeople.net/index.php/phase-3-phoenix-ii-epp-glider-kit-w-bl-motor-and-prop.html[/link] and I think I have some choices now. I realize the phoenix will not have all the mixing functionality that the Radian will have. Im just wondering if the price difference is with it being that I'll be using my DX7 with either plane. I do have other Phase III models that I continue to fly today so i know they aren't junk. Has anyone had a chance to fly a Phoenix II yet. I'm looking for a basic ep glider that will take a little hanger rash that my crunchies wont survive in my RV trailer. I am familiar with EPP but not Z-foam which is what the Radian is composed of.

which rx for my sailplane and Dx7?
I'm still in the process of swapping over 8 planes and helis with from my older Airtronics super 6000 to my newer DX7. So far the AR6100 and Ar6110s receivers have worked flawlessly for my park flyers but now I'd like to put a receiver in a 3 channel sailplane that may be specked out at some point. I heard that the park flyer receivers I mentioned earlier may or may not handle 1000ft+ distances. What is receiver is recommended for this balsa sailplane with a carbon fiber boom? Thanks

That Nano kind of reminds me of my old Talon which I loved. I built mine with a slab v-tail and fully glassed fuse. It flew pretty nice in light lift. I eventually sold it because I was jumping up to my racer. I wish I had kept it now.
