RE: Deployed flaps plane stalled and crashed
I did the same thing with a Wing Mfg P-38 several years ago. Came in for a landing, put the flaps down, plane ballooned, stalled, crashed..... End. Looked at my much more experienced friend that was flying with me and he said, "Didn't check the flaps in the air, did you?" All I could do is laugh because he was right and I knew better. I had a Ki-61 with flaps that I had dialed in really nice. Just forgot to do it on the P-38. Lesson learned. I've had 3 planes since with flaps and I have done the 3 mistake high 'dial in' with them all. Good advice from all above. Tim

RE: 50th Anniversary Flight - Pageboy
All - I was finally able to maiden my Pageboy this evening. I haven't had that much fun in a LONG time. I can't believe how 'spritely' that little plane is. I flew it three times tonight. This was a really cool build and is a lot of fun to fly. I think I'll have to try the Schoolboy next. I have a couple TD .020s lying around.

Thanks, TeeBee. I can't quite remember where I got the inspiration for the colors...... [:D] I guess copying is the most sincere form of flattery. Thanks, Al. The all up weight is 4.8 ounces but that is because I have a square mini 4.8 cell NIMH battery in it. If I got a small lipo and regulator I could drop .6 ounces. I think it will be fast. Glad I built it with rudder AND elevator.

Mine's all built and ready to dope. I don't know if the engine has ever been run as I got it from my uncle. Doesn't appear that it has. My question to you all is, what percent nitro and what percent castor would you recommend? I have the cox fuel you buy at the hobby shop but don't know if that is appropriate. I also have a friend who can make glow fuel, to order, for me. What do the sages suggest? Thanks. Hopefully, you'll see the finished plane yet this week. Tim

RE: 50th Anniversary Flight - Pageboy
Got the wing done last night. Had to work tonight so didn't have a chance to work on it. Will build the fuse tomorrow night. Regarding the finish, I just thought I would use some clear, low shrink butyrate dope. I'd like to thin it but not sure how far I can go with it. I plan on brushing it on. I thought two or three thinned coats would be best with light sanding in between to knock down the bumps. What suggestions does anyone have on the ratio of thinner to dope? ...Or does the TLAR (that looks about right) method work? Thanks Tim

RE: 50th Anniversary Flight - Pageboy
Tee Bee, I ended up doing it just the opposite. I pinned the front of the ribs down over the plan and then put some medium ca on the back, carefully gluing the sheeting down on the back 1/4 inch only. Then I pinned that edge down, pulled the pins from the front, used medium ca on the rest of the rib lengths, and pressed the skin down. Worked well. Thanks

RE: 50th Anniversary Flight - Pageboy
Got all the parts cut out today. May be able to glue up fuse or wing tonight. Question: How do I hold the ribs down while sheeting the wing? There doesn't seem to be enough room to pin down the ribs to the board and there's no spar or anything to glue them to in order to keep them from moving. Thanks Tim

RE: Looking for first twin sugestions/advice
I agree that the TwinStar with 25s would be the best option for a first twin. While not scale, it looks like a 'real' airplane in the air. I had one with LA40s on it. Don't do this. It makes it too heavy and the one negative point about the TwinStar is the 4 ounce tanks. With the LA40s, I got about a 3.5 minute flight. When I switched to a pair of older OS .32Fs that I had, I had longer flight times and less weight. Much better combination. Tim

RE: Vintage Sig R-C Sport Build Thread
I think a magnum .15 can be found fairly cheap and would sound SO much better than electric. You can use the same fuel you use in your larger glow engines and you don"t have to wait for battery packs to charge up or have to have 4 of them to fly basically continuously at will. Tim

RE: Plane for a pair of OS 40LA's?
I'm sorry, I have to disagree with the previous post. I have tried .40 LAs on a Hobbico Twin Star. They were exceedingly heavy and guzzled fuel. With the small tanks provided in the Twin Star and no room for bigger tanks without major mods, I was only able to get 4 minute flights with it. The plane itself is a great plane but not a good candidate for the .40 LAs in my opinion. I have also built and flown the Wing Mfg P-38 with YS .53s on them. It flew really well with those and I would imagine the .40 LAs would pull it around well, too. Good Luck in whatever you decide to build. tim

RE: Holly schnickies!!
I'm not a hater of Cox, by any means. I grew up flying their engines and still fly them today. I think they made great engines. I just think that a multitude of bad choices over the years in product design and marketing ( I think of the cox drag racer of the late 70s or helicopter of the same vintage with a fuel tank external to the motor made of a plastic that was not fuel proof - the fuel line nipple broke off within a month of running the engine) has led them to alienate the customers that could of and would have continued to support them.

I agree. I can't wait for the second video to find out how he did the fuse. I spent some time over on the SPADWorld site but found it hard to navigate. I think this would be a great project for my nephew (8 yrs old) and I to do. Maybe make two - one control line for him and one RC for me. Tim

RE: Holly schnickies!!
Nothing new for Cox, really. They have been creating or putting their name on cr@p for years. Look at the push button radios they came out with 20 years ago. Pretty much guaranteed to fail for a beginner and yet that is how they marketed them. Some of the planes they made and sold were so heavy out of the box that the 049s they had for power couldn't lift them off the ground. Cox HAS been good at making engines. But their business decisions on other things has been less than stellar. Just my $.02 and worth less than that[:)]
