RE: CLUB 40 MUFFLERS?
Kurt, sounds like you guys are having fun in Colorado. My 12 hour trip to Alabama wasn't very fun because I got my doors blown off and most that attended would say I can fly the course as good as anyone. If your coming to the Texas Nationals then maybe you need to be more competitive and check out the differences in these mufflers. RPM does make a difference along with the RPM unload in the air. FF

RE: CLUB 40 MUFFLERS?
John, the problem is that the stock hole in the stinger is around .240 to .250 and using a .297 go guage doesn't really check for any mods to the taper. What I would recommend is the .250 for the go and maybe a .265 for a no go. This would give the racer the ability to check there mufflers with the shanks of a 1/4 inch and 17/64 th inch drill bit. I was using a new cone muffler at Alabama and Hico, I couldn't figure out why I was much slower than at other races. After doing some checking at home I noticed that my new cone mufflers were noticeable slower on RPM. Until then I didn't even know about the cone style of mufflers vs the old waffle baffle. Consider this, a new TT-40 with the cone muffler is not as competitive. I hope someone proves me wrong, but after 50 years of experience with RC performance engines I know what I'm seeing. Maybe we should consider a larger openning on the cone mufflers to improve performance/competitiveness against the old style mufflers? I say this because the first thing I noticed was the difference in the needle settings which were not as broad a range as compared to the old muffler, this is due to the increased back pressure (the cone)resulting in more muffler pressure. Let's think about the new guy or the current racers that are out of the old mufflers? Luckily I have 2 of the old ones. Lets race. FF

RE: CLUB 40 MUFFLERS?
Thanks John, So what your saying is that the go guage that was used at Alabama was only supposed to go about a 1/4 of an inch into the tapered openning? I believe that this would allow some mods to the actual openning further into the taper? I also found that the NO GO .303 would just go in maybe a 1/6 of an inch. I think that Jim McQuin is correct in measuring the actual openning, at lets say, .250 inches. I also had a conversation with Bob P. and he was thinking like me that maybe a .265 No Go with a .250 Go would make more consistent measurements and make everyone closer to the same size? I can't get no satisfaction, size does matter![;)] Fred French

CLUB 40 MUFFLERS?
What are the muffler requirements for Club 40? Are there any stated demensions for the stinger opening as was used at the Alabama race? As stated in the race thread the GO was .297 and the NO GO was .303. I checked my stash of stock mufflers and they checked as follows, 3 measured .250 and 3 measured at slightly less at .240. In Texas they are supposed to be stock un-modified with baffles. The mufflers must have been modified to get to a GO of .297 like was stated for the Alabama race? In addition, I found that the new style cone baffles were about 3 to 400 rpms less and the brand new ones that I have are around the .250 demension [:o]for the stinger? What demensions will be used at the Waco Nationals and in the future for RCPRO club 40 racing? Fred French

RE: Waco race May 12 2012
OK all you Waco ef1 racers, heads up! I haven't talked to Jim (CD) yet , but I have been given enough props to issue each pilot a brand new APC 8x8e prop at the race. The first being free and if you break it the next ones will cost you $5. These fees will go to the Waco club to help support the race. Robert Youens had the props (21) left over from the Austin race from 2 years ago. They are the new style props with the heavy hubs, thanks Robert! I have checked the props for balance and they are marked with a secret code and no other props are to be used? How about that race fans! BATTERIES? In addition, I will provide a scale so all batteries will be checked, OK'd and marked to insure they meet the 325 gram weight limit.[>:] Turnigy Motors? I have talked to several racers that are using the new turnigy motor with the 5 MM shaft and they will be legal for this event. I have 2 of them and they have no performance advantage that I can tell. I will be running an Eflite or OS in my planes, but I'm aware of several pilots that are using them and at $17 its a good thing as Martha Stuart said to her boy friend? How did she get into this conversation, does she fly pylon?[;)] Hey Jim, I'll find some help to make all of this happen along with tech for the ef1's. Let me know what you guys think![:D] Fred French

RE: club 40 - cut tracking and 11th lap?
Hey guys good input, but My post was to make us look at how we can make it easier for the lap counters and cut judges who support our racing. My experience in CDing many races through the years is that the NMPRA system has always caused confusion with the extra lap penalty. It looks like other CD's and clubs have already tried to go around this 11th lap penalty and I would think its because of the difficulty in trying to keep up with that extra lap and the timing of when the cut happens and the communication to the lap counters and pilots. As I pointed out this penalty time can be adjusted to 8, 9 or 10 seconds depending on what you think is fair. This is nothing new and has been used in giant scale and many other types of pylon races. I think that its worth giving it a try and see how it works approach in Texas. Ken, I got my Accusplit 625 stopwatches the other day and they work great and would recommend these for everyone. I'll make my watches available to anyone that wants to use them, got 5 of them. FF

club 40 - cut tracking and 11th lap?
Hey guys, is there a better way to handle cuts tracking without using a 11th lap penalty? I would like to recommend using a 10 second add on time penalty rather than flying an additional lap. This simplifies the heat racing because everyone flies 10 laps and then if a pilot has a cut just add on 10 seconds to figure out the finish order. This is similar to how the giant scale guys have been doing it for years. This makes it much easier for the lap counters and workers. Any comments? FF[:D]

RE: What about a Texas Club-40 points championship?
I like what Scott has to say. This would be simple, just award points on how the pilot finishes the race. But let's say you have 19 pilots like at the last Georgetown race, how would the points be awarded? Has Bob done any posting of the finishing order all the way through 19 pilots. Also, how would you weigh the points by number of entries? FF

RE: What about a Texas Club-40 points championship?
The NMPRA has a formula that they use to track their national points, check it out. Look under race results. The formula is a bit involved, but does weight the points in each race by the total entries. A spread sheet could be put together, any computer wizards out their? Points = 100 X A -1 +.2A +1E A = Total points for a race = # heats X (finish place) 1st=4, 2nd=3, 3rd=2, 4th=1 E = # of entries for the race. Note: How would you treat the Mains, Points for those to? On the other hand maybe just count the regular heat races. Fred

RE: 3w 120 TOC
I have one of these old TOC 120's and ran a 27x10 or a 28x10. If you use a wooden prop its best to use the 27x10 due to the higher loads of the thicker blade. FF

RE: Overall Finish Order?????
Hi Guys, Just can't hold back! The stickers that we use are very sticky too so we use paste wax, like mold release wax on the wing before applying the stickers. when you apply the wax don't rub it off leave the film of wax then apply the sticker. It peals right off when your ready to leave the field and after you guys got your doors blown off. Please treat club 40 as a racing event as intended. No its not for everyone, but its a great club event all over the country. Thanks to all of the clubs that provide an old fart like me the chance to compete and have fun. As for the negative comments, well you probably would not be happy watching either, so come race and learn how to be competitive, its not cheating, its good clean fun and at my age better than playing with mama. RE: New Electric Pylon Racing Spec Class?
I just got off the phone with G.P. who raced in Ft Worth at the first EF1 race in Texas and I got excited about the event and ordered a motor, esc and batteries. I currently race giant scale, club 40 and 424 quickie, so all I need is another racing class, however, this looks like a lot of fun. The Pogo looks great and will have one in my hands tommorrow. Lets race! I will also try to have a race at my place this Nov. in central Texas. Fred[:D] French[:D]

RE: Spinner or Prop Nut?
Hi Skully I used a prop nut in Waco, but have also run a spinner in practice. A radar gun helps when making decisions on props, the airspeed should be checked about mid way down the front stretch. I found that the reworked 10.5x4.5 is the fastest by about 3 to 4 mph over the 10x4, 10x5 reworked or not. The wind is a big factor and usually more RPM in the windy conditions is faster. Still days more pitch and flying smoother course works. In order to know if you right on the needle, this is what I recommend, after 2 or 3 runs look at the plug the darker brown clor on the face of the plug is caused by high heat, burnt oil, and if you really are lean you will notice that the element will turn frosty with no shine when you hold it up to the sun or a light sourse. Plugs, this is a hole new bag of worms and its just like some people like one fuel over another, I find that the best plug for our fuels and engines is the O'donnel 077. this is a medium heat range and the thing to remember is the colder plugs are harder to set and you have to run the engine leaner to get the peak rpm. ABC or laped piston don,t like heat range changes and that's why using one type of plug and get that sweet spot is so important. Fastfreddy
