RE: New Parra T3
Ray can respond to that. What would really be nice is if the PARRA T3 piston, liner and rod were to the same dimensions as the CS tiger. There must be dozens of the CS tigers in drawers or the back of sheds unuseable or uncompetitive, just needing a good powertrain. Until the specs for the T3 are available this will remain a 'what if'.

RE: New Parra T3
Anything which gives enthusiasts and competitors more choice for the "Oliver" inspired 2.5 cc engines has to be good. Senor Parra is to be commended. Some who would otherwise purchase a CS OT may spend just a little more, and get something so much better.

RE: OS 60 fp
How is the compression seal? Engines with poor piston / liner will exhibit this behaviour. Run OK to start, but once fully warmed up, lose fit and die.

RE: New Parra T3
The technical specs are encouraging. If it is built to the same standard as the existing PARRA 2.5 and by the same Ukrainian concern it will be a worthy product. It will be interesting to see if their is any problem in "type acceptance" for competition by the various authorities. I can't see why there would be an issue. That said, it is all moot until the production variant is available and presented for assessment.

RE: Premier Engineering A-M 1.5 cc Diesel
Sometimes some sleuthing is required. Two days after putting the engine back together I stripped and checked the NVA. The spray bay has two jets. Similar to PAW. However, jets are not offset, just drilled straight through. One of the jets was clogged with debris. A pin through the clogged hole and a quick blow-through and squirt with WD-40 soon sorted that. Something was still not quite right. Turning it over slowly I was not happy with the bottom end. There was definitely a binding about 20 degrees before bottom dead centre. Also, there seemed to be very little fore-aft play in the shaft. Time for a bottom end inspection [;)]. Off with the nicely made screw-in moulded composite back plate. The moulded screw thread is very coarse. I had it out in a couple of turns. All working parts appear well made and finished. The piston has very thick walls. Judicious lightening may yield some benefit. Another day perhaps. The connecting rod big end is bronze bushed. Look closely ... as suspected ... the inner face of the plate was fouling the conrod big-end. It's surface is seriously big-end scrubbed. The back plate was over tightened. Minute particles of black plastic swarf were everywhere, telling the story. The front of the bottom end of the connecting rod had also rubbed away a large patch of the black oxide anti-rust coating on the facing surface of the crank web. Cleaning out undertaken, the back plate was re-installed, unscrewed 1/8 of a turn back from its original seating. . If it leaks I will skim the inner face of the plate by 0.2 mm. Bottom end is now friction free. There is 0.15 mm fore-aft play in the shaft, in range and acceptable. Piston fit is still really good. Hopefully the next test run will be successful.

RE: Premier Engineering A-M 1.5 cc Diesel
I ran the Premier A-M 1.5 cc last week-end. It started easily and ran, as the photo's below show, but was not happy. 8,500 RPM on a Robbe Dynamic red composite 7 x 4 propeller? Things were not well. I did not persist. I looked in the exhaust. The exhaust port bridge in the cylinder was not centralised in the case port. Way off in fact. Ah - hah. The cylinder is out of alignment. The top end was dis-assembled. Off with the three screws, slide off the cooling jacket, and out slips the cylinder. Very nice machine work. No swarf or abnormal detritus found. All clean. ABN P/L set up with a traditonal contra-piston in the cylinder. The contra-piston is brass. Porting appears to be the 'vortex' type, not true schnuerle. Interesting. Carefully put back together with no issues, making sure not to tear the flimsy paper gasket which seats under the cylinder flange. Line up the cylinder exhaust port centrally in the case port. Alignment of spray bar jet will also be checked. Will bench run it again next week-end, weather permitting. Hopefully all will be well.

RE: Club Mills!
Welcome to the diesel forum at RCU Jon. There is a further problem with the above Irvine Mills .75 engine. It will not turn more than 4,800 rpm on my Tornado nylon 7x4 propeller. It should do about twice this. I will disassemble it. I suspect that the cylinder or piston are 180 degrees out. Piston and contra-piston fits are superb. ** EDIT ** There is no serial number on the Irvine Mills .75 anywhere. Engine as acquired was unrun NIB and overall presents very nicely. A further matter. If anyone has a tip on how to unscrew a fuel bowl when locked solid from either old castor oil residue or factory preserving oil it would be much appreciated. I am starting to think I prefer the original Mills "tab" securing method, despite the weakness of the tabs, or the "snap" fitting of the Russian "Z" version. There is no pressing need to remove the fuel bowl on this engine. However numerous specks of workshop debris are lining the inner walls of the bowl. I would like to wipe the debris off. I am thinking of drizzling WD-40, or a penetrating oil, on the screw thread of the "upturned" bowl, and leaving for a few days to soak in, and hopefully loosen it.

While the MP Jet .061 is a "little" engine, it has all the "bigger engine" features. Such as the "normal" modern type bolt up silencer, that make it a pleasure to use.

Thanks Brian. Instruction sheet is much appreciated. I have emailed Ian Russel ("Rustler") to see if he has a muffler that may suit. Failing that, I have an ENYA .49 size silencer with a number of mounting lug holes. I may get lucky. I like that it does not want nitromethane, like yourself, I don't use it in my fuel.

I think Martin means balsa, light ply and shrink film Chris. If the weight up front of the MP Jet 061 and silencer is equivalent to the weight of the specified electric motor, I'd say go for it.

RE: Club Mills!
I recently picked up an "as new" Irvine Mills .75, with box and papers, from a forum contributor. After settings were found, starting was as easy as it gets. One choke, two flicks, and it starts. Every time. Hot (back off compression 1/4 of a turn first, then increase when running) or cold. Just like a Mills should. Compression (piston seal) on this Irvine Mills .75 is excellent. A minor issue with it. There is too much "fore and and aft" crankshaft play. I will relieve the prop driver very slightly. It needs to be set back towards the case. About one millimetre.

RE: MVVS 09 diesel
MVVS / Modela 1.5D 19th August 2012 Temp: 16 degrees Centigrade Elevation: 100 meters AMSL Humidity: 60 % *** First run of NIB 1.5 DFS. Silencer not installed. C/L venturi. Engine was stiff from congealed factory preserving oil and tightness of plain bearing. As received the compression adjusting screw was set in an "over compressed" setting for fuel used. First hand start was difficult. Hand re-start from cold: four choked primes, open needle valve 1/2 turn, plus 1/4 to 3/8 of a turn in on compression adjusting screw to increase compression required. Hand re-start from hot: one choked prime, less 1/8 screw out on compression adjusting screw to reduce compression required. Hot re-starts were easy. Cold re-starts required three to six vigourous flicks, but still easily accomplished. Engine as received was very tight. It loosened appreciably after three or so four minute runs. The plain bearing oozed a little blackish tinged oil at the prop driver for first few runs, then cleared. First runs were accomplished very rich and under compressed. Engine was gradually leaned out in subsequent runs, and peaked towards end of session as per Adrian Duncan's recommendations for iron and steel diesel engines. Engine is thoughtfully designed. Superior quality construction. NVA is excellent. It has a fine taped needle, with twin needle ratchet springs holding a knurled thimble with stubby 110 degree angled thick wire extension. Deep venturi intake. Finely machined alloy cylinder jacket. Sand cast crankcase. Porting is not typical schneurle. It appears to be a version of "vortex" porting. This MVVS 1.5 DFS differs from other examples I have seen. I speculate it is a very late production example. Raised surfaces on upper crankcase casting are surface skim machined to an extremely fine finish. It has a turned alimunium barstock back plate instead of black plastic backplate. Exhaust port also shows judicious well executed machining unlike other examples seen. I expect the finely machined "collar" on the upper crackcase ensures less leakage at the sealing face of the manifold of the matching silencer than may be experienced on the "as cast" finish examples. Maximum RPM at end of session on a Robbe Dynamic 7 x4 broad blade propeller: 11,500. Nothing special, but I was not pushing it. In all, I found the 1.5 cc DFS a very nice, light weight sports 1.5 cc engine. Compression and needle adjustments are not "critical". A broad range of acceptable running is available. It is powerful for a plain bearing sports diesel of it's era. Beginners may struggle to start it without experienced assistance. A short video of 6th run is posted at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTenMTKRT7E&feature=youtu.be Still images are posted below, and in the following post.

RE: OS 10 FP issue
The ASP teflon pads I refer to in an earlier post were removed from the old and new pistons. The new piston was a 20 year old part and out of the packet the gudgeon pin was stuck solid to the little end. It had to be removed by a press, cleaned, and re-installed before use. I just love doing that on new parts [;)] The "stems" on the teflon pads as supplied with he new assembly (and as installed on the orginal parts removed from the engine) could best be described as "vestigial". Little more than a tiny pimple. I am certain they play no part on retention of the pad. The pads seem to work though. There are a lot of ASP/SC/Magnum engines out there in active service.

Aussies' do this kind of stuff [:D] Martin, I have a spare set of used teflon pads from an ASP .46 rebuild I did last week. The new piston/liner set came with new gudgeon pin pads. With the correct size hollow point punch, you could just punch them out, and down in diameter to suit an O.S .10FP. That said, I like Recycled's idea. I will try that procedure in the future. A length of teflon rod would last a lifetime.

Symptoms indicate low compression / leakdown caused by poor piston liner seal due to wear or damage. You indicate there is a score in the liner. Time to retire it unless a new piston and liner or donor engine can be located.

The 2012 (final issue?) Taplin Twin Mk III I ordered from Aurora arrived today. The calico package is impressive. Hand stitched closed, and sealed with beeswax. The seals bear an official customs impressed seal. The bill of lading is hand stiched to the calico. Very "pukka"! I am the recipient of package No. 21 of 36. Despatch date 29th August 2012. I am curious. Possibly, 36 Taplin Twin engines have been manufactured in this run? It is a pity I cannot remove the contents and keep the package as is.

RE: 2.5cc diesel day
Slowly getting this old ED 246 Racer Mk III back to form. After initial runs bottom end was inspected. Bearings smooth, no play. Conrod big end was loose on crankpin, as was little end and piston bosses on gudgeon pin. Big end now has a bronze bush. Top end a 4 mm gudgeon pin. Clearances now in spec. Disc valve has been skimmed to remove scores on intake side. New pinion made to mount it. Post rebuild engine now runs very nicely. A willing starter hot ot cold. Piston and liner are original. P&L fit is soft. There is leakdown at tdc. That said, when flicked this old warhorse is still "bouncy", hot or cold. Shown with white nylon 9 x 6 Tornado and black 8 x 6 Master Airscrew propeller. David Owen's assistance is appreciated and acknowledged. With his input what was once a shelf ornament is now doing what it designed to do. I have promised a senior identity a "Blue Pants" for it. I hope I am up to the task. Elevator throw will be conservative.
