RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I've been having a good time with my SD as well. I programmed a mix so some aileron is applied when the rudder is moved and that really helps flatten and "desensitize" the rudder inputs. This airplane stands out nicely and has a great presence in the air. Low throttle passes look very scale. I'll be inspecting/replacing the horns as mentioned ! HAppy flying, Eric

RE: Gas Engine Tuning - WHY?
It's a sad-but-true trend in the hobby. ARFs = less building = less thinking = less understanding.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
One of my fuse tabs was on the verge of pulling through due to wear. I replaced it with one made of a better quality alum. Had a small piece of some 6061 (I think) sheet laying and used that. It isnt showing any signs of distress at this point. The struts seem to be doing well so far.....some slight wear at the hole (near the fuse) but nothing that looks like it will fail....50 flts or so.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I'm thinking the wing struts are necessary. Without the struts attached have somebody hold one wing tip and lift the plane by the other and kinda "bounce" - seems like a lot of flex without the struts..... Might be OK if only very low G flying, but......?

Rust: pre-existing ??
I''m a long time fan of OS MAx engines (since 1978 !) and have purchased numerous different sizes over the years and have had very few problems - I always reccommend OS to fellow modelers. I recently purchsed a new .91FX from Tower on 1/05/08. I installed the engine and have startyed flying it and have only approx 1/2 gallon of Byron 15% (18% oil) glow fuel through it. I ALWAYs run it dry before storage and use after run oil religiously and plug the exhaust and intake. It''s never been in wet conditions such as rain, etc....Also, I live in southern AZ so the humidity is natually low here. I recently noticed that the engine felt "rough" and suspected a bearing issue. Out of curiosity I disassembled the engine and was shocked to see lots of rust. The rear bearing is very rough feeling when spun. I cant image that the rust developed due to improper maintenance on my part based on my post-flight regime. I''m thinking that it existed prior to my purchase and worstened in spite of my post-flight care but do not have evidence of that. I also had a similar situation with a new .46AX....same looking rust deposits after only a few months. At this point I''ll be pulling the backplates to check for rust after delivery. Have you been seeing many new OS engines experiencing bearing issues lately ? I cant think of anything I can change on my side. Suggestions ? Thanks, Eric

Two Mystery Engines
A buddy of mine came across these. I'm relatively new to gassers so I wasnt much help identifying them. I like the 70s style easy-rider dual headers [:D] Seems very custom ? Anybody recognize these ?

Rolls seem pretty axial and I havent even bothered with any aileron differential. I have noticed a fair amount of roll coupling with the use of rudder. I've been meaning to mix a little aile with the rudder but havent gotten around to playing with that either. I need to get more disiplined with regard to fine tuning [8|] Eric

RE: What Should Modelers Expect From An Engine Manufacturer?
Seems to me that Mr Cregger mentioned a very important factor regarding prioritization. That being the aircraft. It's easy to justify buying the best engine (high performance + high price) when mounting to a high performance, high quality airplane. When the airplane requires less engine performance that's where the hard decisions are made. It swings back to an easy decision when the airlplane is on the very low performance side (low performance + low price). I'm thinking things like relaibility, customer service, and warranty are factors for folks selecting an engine for both high and low end airplanes. Pretty much goes for most consumer products (tires to TVs). Price, power, and weight probably become more important based on where you are within the high/low performance spectrum.

RE: Brillelli Engines
Depending on which engine you are talking about, like the 46, I beleive the parts such as piston, crank, and case start life as utility engines manufatured by Poulan. Then, Scott does his magic and adds the right components to make them EI engines. This may not apply to the full line. I may be wrong but that's my impression - I apologize in advance if not completely accurate. PS- My 46 runs great and customer service is tops !!

Bob, That's a bummer [&o] ..... but at least you didnt spend all summer building it like in the pre-ARF era..... When ARFs first started gaining momentum I was in the group of builders who didnt think they were a good thing. After a few wrecks I changed my mind. The crashes are not near as traumatic....but still a big bummer. Eric

Klykera, Thanks for the info and over the past few weekends I have been practicing my take-offs. At this point me and the plane have come to an understanding [;)] If I ease in the throttle real smooth while applying a little elevator take-offs are straight and trouble-free. I'll bet learning to fly a full-scale taildragger can be exciting on take-of [X(] Eric

RE: Extra 300 50cc
I have the 300 with a Brison 3.2 and all the carbon goodies (wing/stab tube, tailwheel bracket, spinner, landing gear +light axles, wheel pants) to save weight. I'm at 5k feet MSL so weight saving is a virtue. It flies really well and is a gentle, stable landing plane. It flies very "light" as is and I'm sure it would fly just as well without all the overpriced carbon stuff [8|] I lean toward IMAC style flying VS 3D and It's a super flying airplane.

OS .91 FX Inverted Install ?
I installed my new OS 91FX in the inverted orientation. I havent run it yet but some guys who are running them inverted told me that it will be problematic regarding it loading-up and low RPM / Idle. They say that if you idle too long in flight that it'll load up and quit. Apparently, the only way they can get theirs to run reliably is to use an on-board glow driver. It this true with the .91 mounted inverted ? Cant I compensate with the low-end needle adjustment to prevent loading-up ? Now I'm paranoid [X(] Any tips are appreciated - Thanks, Eric

OS .91FX Pitts Style Muffler ?
I've seen three different offerings from Bisson, Slimline, and JTec: 1) http://bissonmufflers.com/en/muffler.html?mufflers::listing_id=114048# 2) http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNB24&P=0 3) http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKHU8&P=0 I was wondering if anyone had good/bad results from any of them. Also, I'm most concerned with good muffling (w/correct backpressure) and then weight - price isnt that important at this point. Any recommendations between the three ? I havent decided on engine orientation yet .... Thanks, Eric

P-51 ARF : Trying to identify ?
Hello, I recently won a P-51 ARF at a raffle and am trying to determine who distributed it. There was no manufacturer listed on the box or on the instructions. Attached is the front cover of the instructions. Quality seems decent - It came with retracts and is set-up for flaps. Look familiar to anyone ?? Also, I'm trying to decide between three OS glow engines. I'll be sticking with OS. either .61FX, .75AX, or .91FX. At 8 lbs I figured I'd want something a touch bigger than the .61FX (we fly at 5k ft MSL). I began looking at the .75AX and then the .91FX. Turns out the .91 is lighter than the .75 by roughly 2oz (w/muffler). At this point i cant see much downside to the .91 on this plane especially since the .91FX is only 1.2 oz heavier than the .61FX (w/mufflers). Comments ?

10-4, I'll be keeping an eye on temps as the season changes. As for the tail bracing I'm not using the flying wires (although I think I'll add those) and i did not add any bracing yet either. Some folks are putting tri stock on the elevator/fuse I belive. I dont recall seeing flying wire parts in the assortment.

Bob - Great pics and the smoke looks nice....I may yank the smoke system out of my WH Extra 300 and use in the Decathlon. Glad your initial flights went well. Zippi - I've been flying my Deacthlon with B46 and have the same cowling setup as Bob. The outdoor temps have been in the 60-70 degree range and it seems to be getting adequate cooling - no evidence of hot engine at all. We'll see how it goes this summer at 100 degrees [X(]. I also opened the holes on the molded louvers on the left side of the cowl. Eric

Yep - I carry spare 1/4-20 wing bolts all the time. I was real surprised they werent that size. The existing blind nuts appear to be glued or I would just pop them out and replace with 1/4-20 but dont want to damage anything. I like the thumb-screw end on the supplied bolts...
