RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
kwik & Nudge, Did you buy your engines from your local H.S. or from Horizon? Have you guys or your LHS contacted Horizon Hobby's about your issues? I have delt with Horizon on other issues and got really good service on replacement parts. I had by battery go south on my 12X and they sent me a replacement with no hesitation. Saito / Horizon should be sending you replacement ignitions at no cost to you!! Your engines should be under warranty still and they should step up and fix the issue's. Me & a buddy bought 4 of those CRRC 40cc build it yourself engines and their ignitions were crap, I contacted them over 1 1/2 years later and they sent us 4 new updated ignitions with no questions asked. If a little company like CRRC steps up, surely Saito would do the same??

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Nudge, You are absolutely right, Saito or any engine for that matter should run with no issue's. All my planes have Saito engines as they usually run flawlessly and you have to love the 4 stroke sound. Have you contacted Horizon Hobby about the issues on all your engines? Seeing how you purchased the first out version (personally I never buy the first year anything)I bet if you talk to them, they might upgrade your 3 engines with the new carb & ignition or even replace them. You spent a lot of $$ being a loyal Saito customer, it doesn't hurt to call and talk to their customer service. I am the Service Tech, for KingTech Turbines and I know if we ever have a customer call with an issue, we fix it or send a new turbine to replace it by the next day. Kingtech might not be as big as Saito but i'm sure they care about bad publicity and want return customers like we do. Good Luck!! Dirk

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Magnum, What prop are you turning with the 450? I am almost finished with my plane but I have ran the radial to break it in. It was a chore to get its air fuel set, but now it purrrrrs. I have a 22x10 4 blade prop and on the stand it turned it @ 5K rpm. The 7-77 radial max RPM is 6K and I should pick up 4-500rpm in the air so it seems like the perfect prop. ORION has the same engine and I think he posted a video of his plane a few pages back. The other nice thing about this engine is you can run 0-5% nitro. I have a mcdaniels on board glow for it but I have let it idle for over 5 minutes without the glow on and had instant throttle response, very impressive!!

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Capt Ron, I agree with your statement of the quality of work, the guys on this thread are doing. As you can see from some of my pictures, I have stolen a few of their ideas for my plane. I thought I did a pretty good job on my Corsair so far, until I ran into this guys thread building a P-38 from a box of sticks. Now this guy is a true master builder and craftsman!!! If any of you guys have time, take a look at the link below and you are in for a real treat!!! This guy blows my mind on his quality and expertise. He cut all his own lumber, he didn't buy a laser cut kit. I think the only thing he purchased was the engines, props and landing gear, everthing else he fabricated. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11180201/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Nudger, Just a few thoughts on the inverted lean issue, 1. Is Saito using a standard gas type carb that has a built in diaphram pump? 2. How do you have the tank vented? It looks like the fuel cell is higher than the carb and if Saito has a weaker diaphram pump, when you go inverted ( fuel cell is now below the carb) and not having a presurized tank like on a glow fuel set up, you could be going lean because the pump is unable to pump enough fuel. Just a thought. Dirk

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
This is my local flying field in California. It has a 60' wide X 800' Long pave runway. This field is about the nicest field I have ever flown at!! It would be better if we get a covered pit area. I actually have a # of fields within an hour drive that are very nice as well. This is not a turbine friendly field unfortunatley, such a waste of good airspace!!![:(] google earth 33°55'56.07" N 117°37'51.42" W This next location is a public field in Los Angeles that the Army Corp of Engineers built as part of the parks & recreation program. RE: TROY BUILT MODELS
Midas, Thats a much better response!! I am not made of $$ and I do my best at shopping around. You make a very valid point that we all need to remember. We all have out grown most of our local hobby shop inventory and stocking our kind of planes is to expensive for them. All the previous mentioned plane suppliers need to stay in business here in the good ol USA or we will be really screwed. When I buy from the above mentioned, I look at it as I am supporting my LHS on my level of needs, I want them to stay in business, but just can't drive in and say hi. They need to make a margin of profit and if it is in the shipping, so be it!! They are all buying from ESM or whom ever and are paying the same price to the manufacturer and they all stay competative on plane pricing so where else are they suppose to make any $$ to keep the doors open? To me, customer services is everything and all the above mentioned at some point and time has taken care of me and my purchases. This is a pic of my current project. ESM 85" making it my own!! Good Flying!!

RE: TROY BUILT MODELS
Midas, DUDE, I have bought from TBM, ARF pros, Dream Works, VQ WARBIRDS and have recieved nothing but outstanding service. The nice thing about SHOPPING for a new plane or parts, is you "SHOP" the best price including shipping & taxes before you give your CC #. I personally have recieved broken parts, have had wrong items shipped or items lost in the mail and all the above mentioned companies took care of business quickly with no problems. The idea of buying an item, knowing your total $$ at time of purchase, giving a CC # to pay for it and then getting on a forum to bash the seller because you didn't like the price is absolutley WRONG!!! Now if you didn't get what you purchased or it was damaged and they didn't take care of it, that is worth bashing the seller. But crying about shipping after the fact??? REALLY??? BTW, I have no affiliation with any of the companies mentioned, just a hobbiest like everyone else here.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Here are some pics of my control surfaces, I didn't want the hardware sticking through and visable from the top side of the plane. I used carbon fiber control horns and Hysol'd them in. As you can see I also mounted the servos under the stabs and got away from the wire system. I also mounted a servo tray in the tail for the rudder and got rid of the wires. I also know I added weight to the tail but with the heavier 7 cyl radial I am mounting up front balance shouldn't be a problem.

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Skillet, I have had a TF P-51 and I must say that TF really puts the effort to make a build easy and they make a quality plane. I am not familiar with their 85" Corsair but if it is built like the P-51 it would be much easier than the ESM. If your building skills are up for a challenge, read this post from front to back as most the guys posting on here have come up with some really good ideas and changes. With this plane being almost all fiberglass you can do a lot by painting it and making it your own. Nothing is worse than showing up to a warbird event and having a whole squadron of Marine Dreams or other cookie cutter planes there. As for engine choice, some of the guys put a the DLE111 twin in them and it fits pretty good with only the plug caps barley sticking out of the cowl. DLE111 will turn a pretty big 3 or 4 blade prop. There are some great Radials availible also you might consider if you are going for the realistic sound. Evolution makes an awesome 77cc 7 cyl radial and Saito makes a large 450 3 cyl that are great choices and fit without any holes in the cowl. When you get into the larger scale planes its time to step up, make it your own, and build a kick ass plane worth braggin about!!! Hope to see your build pictures on this thread and not TF's, Dirk Flejter KingTech Turbines, USA Service Tech

RE: KingTech K-80
Megafly, Just throwing my 2 cents in. On a freshly charged 2S Lipo pack, your K-80 will start fine. When the pack drops to 8V, you will not get the perfect starts and more than likely a no start. If you stay with your 2s Lipo pack, "CHECK THE VOLTAGE" if you have a no start. Don't mess with the settings, as you now know what settings work best on your turbine. I would take Barrys advise and go with a 3S LIFE or a 7C nimh pack as they tend to last longer through out the day of flying. As for you guys running the Kingtech propane start E model turbine, the 2S Lipo works fine. Good Flying, Dirk Flejter KingTech, USA Service Tech

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Thanks for the kind words on my paint scheme. I will post better and closer pictures as soon as I get closer to finishing it. The motor is ABSOLUTLEY AWESOME!!!! I took a quick video with my blackberry, it is turning a 24 X 12 2 blade prop @ 5500. I was testing the McDaniel's onboard remote glow system, but the whole video is with the glow turned off. It took a while to get it tuned, but once it was, as you can see, it idled without even a hic up. The throttle response was very crisp and the sound is incredible!! The following day I mounted the 22x10 4 blade prop, put a 5 gallon can of Kero (about 35 lbs) and a 15lb dumb bell on the stand platform instead of my truck tire, and when I went full throttle it started to pull the stand across the driveway. I attached a link if anyone wants to see my video of the motor running. http://s186.photobucket.com/albums/x14/flejter1/?action=view¤t=7cylnoglowsyson.mp4

RE: ESM 50cc Corsair
Hey Guys, Just wanted to say thanks to ALL of you that made some really good suggestions on your builds. I took advantage of a few of them and my plane is turning out really nice!! I did do a complete repaint and graphics and made it my own kind of thing. I am running a Evolution 7-77 Radial and will turn the Biela 22" X 10 4 blade prop. I am getting right at 5K RPM on the bench (specs say 6K is the MAX RPM) and figure those will increase in the air 4-500 RPM's. I also went with Ty's cockpit and I must say it turned out really nice. Still debating if I want to attempt a sliding Canopy? I went with 2 independent evevator servo's mounted under the stabs and I also built a tray and mounted the Rudder servo in the back with push pull control rods not the wires.
